This is probably one of the most sensitive conflict zones in the world at the moment and I did my best telling a high-level version of the story that still stays fair and discusses the major events. There are endless more elements that would have to be mentioned for the whole conflict to be understood, so I highly recommend you dive deeper into this if you are interested in fully comprehending it. I honestly was ignorant to how sensitive things still were when I arrived and I'm glad I changed that by getting to hear real stories from people in the Yes Fam. It was pretty surreal driving across this de-facto border and hearing the tragic stories on both sides. I just hope that Cyprus and Cypriots will one day find peace and a prosperous future.
Unfortunately, tensions between the two communities remain high even to this day, and each side's education system's biased perspectives really doen't help the situation. Ever since the Anan Plan was rejected I highly doubt the island will ever have another chance to reunify, at least not anytime soon, not with Edrogan still around
I was there when I was 13, like we've walked on the same runway. My uncle worked for the UN and his office was inside this buffer zone. So so cool you guys are cover this now! I remember really wanting to go inside the airport but not being allowed because it was too dangerous.

I was on the both sides and saw that the place was magical. I was on Cyprus 4 times and didn't know about that city I knew about the history and everything, now I want to go back and see it. It is so sad to see all of your houses like that. Hope you have a better living in the next years.

My (Greek Cypriot) mother is from Famagusta, refugeed to Larnaca in 1974. The video was really well done and informative for those not familiar with the situation. I spent a lot of time in Larnaca as a child and consider it home. For some reason, hearing the Turkish Cypriot lady say she was born in Larnaca brought a tear to my eye. What a tragedy for both sides.
@@nic12344 One minor detail. Same resolution called Northern Republic of Cyprus as an illegal entity, and asked withdrawal of Turkish Army. Turks did not agree due to Turkish Cypriots not feeling safe. Look up ENOSIS: The megali idea of Greece becoming "one land" with Cyprus, which is the reason why all this started! If UN offered inhabitants of Varosha to return back their home as a separate resolution, Turks wouldn`t have disagreed to that.

Speaking as a cypriot, I don't want conflict but fuck Unity. There's a ton to it, but pretty much most of the island including myself would rather hang ourselves than recognise the northern part of the island as a turkish state.
Oh yeah, studied abroad here. Lived in Nicosia for an entire semester, and loved every minute of it. Seriously, Cyprus is quite possibly the most hidden gem in the world. Such a paradise.

My mom’s family is Cuban. I can understand all the younger generations side on this, even though I am 45. Mom and her family fled when she was 5 years old. My great grandparents and grandparents were never able to visit their home or families again before their passing. My mom has no interest in visiting Cuba. I think it’s probably the pain in her parents and grandparents that impacts this. For the people of Cyprus, I hope you are able to live as one again soon and this city is available to you all. As the narrator said, we are all one.
I was a journalist for 25 years, I got two awards for news reporting and one for documentary writing and I live in Cyprus where I once made a documentary about the people who live and work in the buffer zone. So I just want to say congratulations for producing a really, really good film about a complex problem that has rarely if ever been properly portrayed/reported. You had no bias or hidden agenda and you focused on the people not the politics. It's unfortunately impossible to learn about every European country's history during regular history classes. Growing up in Poland, I only learned that Cyprus was divided between Greece and Turkey in geography. And some people in the world might not know anything about Cyprus at all. It's a very important video, so is most of your content. So thank you for expanding our knowledge about the world, I definitely got encouraged to find out more about the conflict.
I'm glad you found more about my country through this video. Just a correction though, Cyprus is not split between Greece and Turkey. It's the Republic of Cyprus, an independent nation since 1960, of which the north part is illegally occupied by Turkey after it invaded in 1974 and took almost half of the island. Demographically, we've been greek speaking Cypriots (80%) and turkish speaking (18%) although an actual division between the communities came after the turkish invasion when the greek-Cypriots forcefully evacuated to the south and the Turks moved to the north.

Also you forgot to add that a quarter of the Turkish Cypriots were forcefully deported by the Greeks or that they fled to reinforced enclaves. But of course you will add only what the opposing side did...

ENOSIS, also known as the annexation of Cyprus by Greece, already became the official policy of the Greek state during the 1950s, and never changed until Turkey’s intervention in 1974. The EOKA militant group launched its campaign of violence in 1955. Although one of EOKA’s aims was to end the British presence in Cyprus, the vast majority of their attacks targeted the Turkish Cypriots.

When I first clicked on a Yes Theory video, I surely was not expecting it to be anywhere near an emotional video. Now, I actually do expect, no matter the subject, to have some emotional and sometimes very intense emotional moments. I am grateful that this content is always, in some way, empathetic to humans and animals. Thanks again for another great video.
This video made me cry. And I don’t cry. The older I get, the more this separation of humans breaks my heart. When are we going to understand we are all connected? When are we going to accept Truth, Love and Freedom are the answers to life on earth?

I watched this video with tears in my eyes. I'm a 61 year old Cypriot currently living in South Africa. I was living in Famagusta until 1974 when my family and I fled to avoid the indiscriminate bombing. We left with the clothes we were wearing on the day and nothing else! Been back once to see our house, which by the way has been "given" to some Turkish-Cypriot family that lives...in Turkey. The streets you walked in while in the newly "opened" city were the places I used to walk on my way to the beach or on my way to school. I have very fond memories of the pace and I've spent the last 47 years with the hope that one day I will be able to live in my family house again and walk the streets of my youth, see old friends.... One can only dream I suppose!
How many Turkish villages, homes, fields and gardens been "given" to the Greeks? Can you also tell us about it??? Greek Cypriots as the majority incited hatred and the subsequent war despite warnings from Turkey. If there hadn't been the 1974 intervention by Turkey, there wouldn't have been a single Turk left. You would have butchered every single one of them as you did in the south.

We are very sorry for what you have experienced, it is really traumatizing thing for a human, we all hope a better and peaceful future but what you experienced was a conclusion of indiscriminate massacres done by Greek Cypriots, from 1963 to 1974 Turkish Cypriots suffered a lot, back then Greeks Cypriots could stop the bloodshed but they didn't so it lead to 1974, story of suffering did not start at 1974 and as in your case it did not end in 1974. Houses given to who left their houses in the south or whose house destroyed/burned by Greek militants, or who lost their beloved ones. You can apply the court in the North for your house. When we left radicalism, racism behind us, respect each others differences, and recognize each others sufferings we could reach a peaceful future together.

As a Cypriot. This bring back to many sad dark memories. I'm from the South part of the Island that flee off the Island and my relatives fled up North. Over 30 years later got reunited with my relatives through social media platform.

Same for all Cypriot's that had to flee from there own property. My family and I are from Silikou (Limassol) that's in the South part. There were force to leave from Silikou. I was force to leave the Island when I was very young with my mother and siblings. My older brother was killed. My aunts, cousins and uncles ended up in the North part.

I think this is Thomas true passion and his own idea. This is without taking out any contribution that the other 3 had and steel have on the channel, and that we all love. But Thomas created Project 30 and asked his friend Matt for help, and Ammar and Derin join after that just because they were staying on the same house. I remember the story of the party where Ammar was introduced to Thomas; the people that Ammar was talking to about the piramid tell him that he needs to meet Thomas, because they saw the same passion. And you can see how the others have been embracing other projects but Thomas main job continues to be the videos, the stories, the travels, etc and that is just remarkable. I also think that's one of the reasons the he and Lexie connect, because they share that same interest on traveling and to tell and show other cultures and other people perspective on life.

Today it is all about 3 things really and why Cyprus is still at a stalemate; Power, Property and Politics. a) Power: Corrupt politicians on either side that truly don't want a solution, along with the Old Imperial nation that wants the Island divided (and confused along ethnic issues) so they get to keep their strategic military presence here Free of charge (there is Rent to be paid to RoC but is denied until -and here is the excuse- there is a solution...In addition there is Turkey also expanding militaristically nowadays on the island, as it serves more than one purpose b) Property: 18% of the population "received" or "stole" land that does not belong to them and illegally "created/named a state" and although many original owners on either side may still want to go back, many on both sides who benefited from the Property looting, dont..c) Politics: Both local and International, each one with its own vile agenda for its presence on the Island. Basically, its mostly outsiders who get to decide what is to happen...Hope this answers the Million Dollar question why the Cyprus problem is still unresolved. Restitution would be the only right and lasting solution...Whoever local doesn't like can go back to Greece or Turkey and be a citizen there.

@@EarlRegent How can the innocent people who just happen to be speaking the greek language, start this whole thing. It's greed and power from other lands that disrupted the harmony, as always. Whats very wrong here is that we lost family in that war and our homes which were cherished deeply. The Cypriots should not have endured all this tragedy for others power conflicts.
@@EarlRegent Yes, it’s true that the main problems from the Cypriot issue came from the Greek side but a lot of people forget that the strings were usually pulled by Britain and the *USA* ... I know...huge shocker: This is the 60’s and 70’s we are talking about, the hight of the *Cold War* . Back then, the president of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III visited several Eastern Block nations and there were serious concerns among the Brits and especially USA that Cyprus could fall under the Soviet zone of influence under Makarios. So when it became clear that Cyprus was falling apart because of the Greek EOKA-B, Britain and USA secretly came up with a plan to encourage Turkey to invade the island in the mid 60’s and split it to have AT LEAST some strong anti-communist stronghold on the island. The invasion didn’t happen...or to be more precise...it happened way later. Greece was ruled by a military anti-communist dictatorship from 67 till 74. Who were obviously supported by the USA. Another military coup ended the previous coup and America therefore got what it wanted: These new militants were EXTREMELY pro-Enosis . So much so that they supported EOKA-B and the Cypriot National guard to overthrow the current regime. 5 days later Turkey intervened and captured 3% of the island. The Greek Junta collapsed and month of peace talks began. All seemed okay but on August 15 Turkey launched a second operation (Attila-2). Only two nations were capable to stop Turkey: the US and Britain...but they allowed and even encouraged Turkey to carry out the operation so that they would all get the most desirable outcome. A nation with a strong anti-communist mindset. So yes, Greeks are seen as the main reason of the Cyprus issue. From the Akritas plan to EOKA-B and Enosis, from the countless of massacres to get rid from the ‘undesirables’ (Turks) to the forced expulsions leading into fortified enclaves all the way to the inevitable Greek coup. But you should not forget that all off these things were set in motion, encouraged and promoted by these greater powers for their own interests.
People in Cyprus in their younger years, were doing everything from scratch, and even if they didn't know how to, they learned from their neighbors. They were very creative and hard working people. It's really hard for me as a Cypriot to see my island being divided because of politics and beliefs. I'm 23 years old and I don't know if I am going to see a unified island in my lifetime.
My uncle died as a 19-year-old peacekeeper in Cyprus and is buried in the UN cemetery. We have only been granted rights to visit him once. It’s a beautiful place with a heartbreaking past. A great film telling the story, thank you.

This video meant so much to me, I was born in Nicosia, Cyprus but moved from there to Mexico at a young age, I never really felt any connection to the country and I knew about the country's history. But somehow this video made me feel closer to the country I was born in. I really appreciate the heart and effort you put into these videos you do make people change in the way they think.
As a Cypriot born after the war in the north this got me very emotional. I lost two uncle who were both young, just like a lot of families who lost someone. A lot of people think the same in the regard that we should unite . We speak two different languages and have two different religions but we are essentially the same people, we have the same values and traditions, we are so much a like. Truly amazing work by Yes Theory. I have definitely subscribed after this!
My guy, sorry for your loss. Political wars are really meaningless and just selfish interests of the countries' leaders. I think we people, in general, could definitely live in harmony it's just that there are a lot of powerful and influential people that are greedy and selfish who pull the strings and also corrupt the ideologies of some citizens leading to a lot of conflicts between societies. I just hope one day we will all be living in a world with no major political conflicts.

I know it wasn't all the Greek and only a fraction so I don't blame all for the sins of some but you simply cannot reduce what had happened to mere machinations of some mad politicians. Some of the Turks on the island may have lost their spines to the promise of an EU passport but we didn't. We remember. It will not happen ever again.

As a Greek i have to say that the conflict between Greece and Turkey is always going to be between our governments, for me at least. All of the Turkish people i have met were not these aggressive scary looking individuals that most Greeks say they are, just normal people. This whole situation must stop and we shall live in harmony again since both countries have great cultures and traditions.

All you could do is continue to bring goodwill to the Turkish citizens you meet, as them to pay it forward to all the Greeks that they meet in hopefully in time, both sides will pressure government to end these disputes because no one has ill will towards each other.
I was there in 2000. My dad was stationed in Nicosia for 3 years. It was crazy driving through there, seeing the abandoned gas station, airport, and a crashed fighter jet, just to go to the diplomat pool. People would also frequently drive go karts on the abandoned airport tarmac. Also, as the son of a diplomat, I was allowed to travel with him back and forth between the Turkish and Greek sides. One of the more memorable experiences I had was trekking through the ruins of Kantara Castle which is on the northeastern coast. There's so many amazing sights and experiences on that island, and everyone was incredibly friendly from what I remember, both Greek and Turkish.

This was heart broking moment to see that old man walking in his young age days with the memory which is full of feeling that no one can imagine, that happened to me when war broke down in the city I was living and grow up there, an empty city with no one around. Well if i'm being honest, there aren't that many youths from the cypriot side willing to even communicate. What you saw there was about 0.00001% of the kids who would do that. A lot of cypriots, including myself wouldn't even bother with trying to contact the turks. The northern part of the island will encourage such communication because they want to be officially recognised which most cypriots would rather hang themselves than see it.

I was in Cyprus last year and visited the whole length of the country, experiencing both sides of the partition, so this video felt so surreal to watch as its places I’ve witnessed with my own eyes. I visited Verosha and it was truly just unlike anything I’d ever seen, and now with this added side from those who actually lived there it’s added even more meaning to my visit. Cyprus was so beautiful, from the places to the people and I’d love to visit again one day

Really, never heard about it before? It's a great opportunity to start reading/exploring it then. It is so interesting! I remember when the Turks invaded the north part of the island. I was 6 years old and i was living in a public orphanage in Athens Greece. A few months after the invation, the orphanage flooded with Cypriot kids, aged 5 to 17. It was unbelievable... I cannot imagine what those people whent through... uspeakable trauma. Greetings from Athens 😀

Turks should have accepted Cyprus right to join Greece - but with community rights for the Turks. Turks are from Central Asia, Greeks have been in Cyprus for 3,000+ years. Turkey can keep Cyprus when they recognise Kurdish and Armenian rights and independence.

Just thought I'd provide some context, the "bullet" that they found is a blank shell casing. In the military we use these for training, and they don't actually shoot anything, just make noise. By the profile and size, I'd guess it's a NATO standard caliber, probably 7.62mm. All in all, amazing video guys! Edit: thanks y'all for filling in the gaps of info I left out

Blank cartridges "don't actually shoot anything" except a fuckton of hot gas. That gas is perfectly capable of maiming or even killing a person at point blank range. But they're not only used in training. They're used to launch rifle grenades (most likely how it ended up on the ground).

For us it’s a very sensitive and important topic and sadly noone really talks about it these days as the majority of people don’t believe that there’s really a solution to the problem.The history of cyprus is a very hard topic to talk about because it isn’t just the turkish invasion to the island but many events that led to the invation and many others that happened after it. Mistakes were made by both sides and Im glad that there’s still people out there who believe in a peaceful world where both Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots can live together. Honestly, it’s heartbreaking, seeing one of the prettiest places of your country ending up like this, knowing that those are the houses of your fellow citizens, which they had to abandon in order to stay alive. People left their lives there, they left their houses, their properties, their memories. And it breaks my heart, knowing that to this day, 47 years after the Turkish invasion(1974), they remain untouched.

This video was so beautifully done, it made me want to cry… I’ve been visiting Northern Cyprus since I was a small child (over 20 years!) - the people from this island are some of the nicest, most welcoming people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting so I’m so glad you’re bringing light to the struggles in their country.
It’s such a pity that Varosha has been ransacked and looted by the soldiers who were supposed to protect it. The only building that was “out of bounds” for the looters was the Golden Sands hotel, owned by the British Royal family. It still stands today, completely intact, even the curtains are drawn in most rooms. This implies that most other buildings are in such disrepair due to looting/scrapping, and not decay. 😩
This is probably one of the most sensitive conflict zones in the world at the moment and I did my best telling a high-level version of the story that still stays fair and discusses the major events. There are endless more elements that would have to be mentioned for the whole conflict to be understood, so I highly recommend you dive deeper into this if you are interested in fully comprehending it. I honestly was ignorant to how sensitive things still were when I arrived and I'm glad I changed that by getting to hear real stories from people in the Yes Fam. It was pretty surreal driving across this de-facto border and hearing the tragic stories on both sides. I just hope that Cyprus and Cypriots will one day find peace and a prosperous future.

Unfortunately, tensions between the two communities remain high even to this day, and each side's education system's biased perspectives really doen't help the situation. Ever since the Anan Plan was rejected I highly doubt the island will ever have another chance to reunify, at least not anytime soon, not with Edrogan still around
I was there when I was 13, like we've walked on the same runway. My uncle worked for the UN and his office was inside this buffer zone. So so cool you guys are cover this now! I remember really wanting to go inside the airport but not being allowed because it was too dangerous.

My (Greek Cypriot) mother is from Famagusta, refugeed to Larnaca in 1974. The video was really well done and informative for those not familiar with the situation. I spent a lot of time in Larnaca as a child and consider it home. For some reason, hearing the Turkish Cypriot lady say she was born in Larnaca brought a tear to my eye. What a tragedy for both sides.

@@nic12344 One minor detail. Same resolution called Northern Republic of Cyprus as an illegal entity, and asked withdrawal of Turkish Army. Turks did not agree due to Turkish Cypriots not feeling safe. Look up ENOSIS: The megali idea of Greece becoming "one land" with Cyprus, which is the reason why all this started! If UN offered inhabitants of Varosha to return back their home as a separate resolution, Turks wouldn`t have disagreed to that.

Speaking as a cypriot, I don't want conflict but fuck Unity. There's a ton to it, but pretty much most of the island including myself would rather hang ourselves than recognise the northern part of the island as a turkish state.
Oh yeah, studied abroad here. Lived in Nicosia for an entire semester, and loved every minute of it. Seriously, Cyprus is quite possibly the most hidden gem in the world. Such a paradise.

My mom’s family is Cuban. I can understand all the younger generations side on this, even though I am 45. Mom and her family fled when she was 5 years old. My great grandparents and grandparents were never able to visit their home or families again before their passing.
My mom has no interest in visiting Cuba. I think it’s probably the pain in her parents and grandparents that impacts this.

It's unfortunately impossible to learn about every European country's history during regular history classes. Growing up in Poland, I only learned that Cyprus was divided between Greece and Turkey in geography. And some people in the world might not know anything about Cyprus at all. It's a very important video, so is most of your content. So thank you for expanding our knowledge about the world, I definitely got encouraged to find out more about the conflict.
I'm glad you found more about my country through this video. Just a correction though, Cyprus is not split between Greece and Turkey. It's the Republic of Cyprus, an independent nation since 1960, of which the north part is illegally occupied by Turkey after it invaded in 1974 and took almost half of the island. Demographically, we've been greek speaking Cypriots (80%) and turkish speaking (18%) although an actual division between the communities came after the turkish invasion when the greek-Cypriots forcefully evacuated to the south and the Turks moved to the north.

Also you forgot to add that a quarter of the Turkish Cypriots were forcefully deported by the Greeks or that they fled to reinforced enclaves.

ENOSIS, also known as the annexation of Cyprus by Greece, already became the official policy of the Greek state during the 1950s, and never changed until Turkey’s intervention in 1974. The EOKA militant group launched its campaign of violence in 1955. Although one of EOKA’s aims was to end the British presence in Cyprus, the vast majority of their attacks targeted the Turkish Cypriots.

When I first clicked on a Yes Theory video, I surely was not expecting it to be anywhere near an emotional video. Now, I actually do expect, no matter the subject, to have some emotional and sometimes very intense emotional moments. Never ... I just accepted this us humans have a drive to earn stuff but that drive also makes us Greedy which in my opinion is something a lot worse that Wrath or Lust. Did you know that just with U.S's military budget you can get rid of so many problems on Africa? I don't even need to tell you the numbers it is quite obvious but will they do it? of course not they are some random 3rd world countries no one cares about them , their lives worth less. I watched this video with tears in my eyes. I'm a 61 year old Cypriot currently living in South Africa. I was living in Famagusta until 1974 when my family and I fled to avoid the indiscriminate bombing. We left with the clothes we were wearing on the day and nothing else! Been back once to see our house, which by the way has been "given" to some Turkish-Cypriot family that lives...in Turkey. The streets you walked in while in the newly "opened" city were the places I used to walk on my way to the beach or on my way to school. I have very fond memories of the pace and I've spent the last 47 years with the hope that one day I will be able to live in my family house again and walk the streets of my youth, see old friends.... One can only dream I suppose!
How many Turkish villages, homes, fields and gardens been "given" to the Greeks? Can you also tell us about it??? Greek Cypriots as the majority incited hatred and the subsequent war despite warnings from Turkey. If there hadn't been the 1974 intervention by Turkey, there wouldn't have been a single Turk left. You would have butchered every single one of them as you did in the south.

We are very sorry for what you have experienced, it is really traumatizing thing for a human, we all hope a better and peaceful future but what you experienced was a conclusion of indiscriminate massacres done by Greek Cypriots, from 1963 to 1974 Turkish Cypriots suffered a lot, back then Greeks Cypriots could stop the bloodshed but they didn't so it lead to 1974, story of suffering did not start at 1974 and as in your case it did not end in 1974. Houses given to who left their houses in the south or whose house destroyed/burned by Greek militants, or who lost their beloved ones. You can apply the court in the North for your house. When we left radicalism, racism behind us, respect each others differences, and recognize each others sufferings we could reach a peaceful future together.

Same for all Cypriot's that had to flee from there own property. My family and I are from Silikou (Limassol) that's in the South part. There were force to leave from Silikou. I was force to leave the Island when I was very young with my mother and siblings. My older brother was killed. My aunts, cousins and uncles ended up in the North part.

I think this is Thomas true passion and his own idea. This is without taking out any contribution that the other 3 had and steel have on the channel, and that we all love.
But Thomas created Project 30 and asked his friend Matt for help, and Ammar and Derin join after that just because they were staying on the same house.
I remember the story of the party where Ammar was introduced to Thomas; the people that Ammar was talking to about the piramid tell him that he needs to meet Thomas, because they saw the same passion. And you can see how the others have been embracing other projects but Thomas main job continues to be the videos, the stories, the travels, etc and that is just remarkable.
I also think that's one of the reasons the he and Lexie connect, because they share that same interest on traveling and to tell and show other cultures and other people perspective on life.

Today it is all about 3 things really and why Cyprus is still at a stalemate; Power, Property and Politics. a) Power: Corrupt politicians on either side that truly don't want a solution, along with the Old Imperial nation that wants the Island divided (and confused along ethnic issues) so they get to keep their strategic military presence here Free of charge (there is Rent to be paid to RoC but is denied until -and here is the excuse- there is a solution...In addition there is Turkey also expanding militaristically nowadays on the island, as it serves more than one purpose b) Property: 18% of the population "received" or "stole" land that does not belong to them and illegally "created/named a state" and although many original owners on either side may still want to go back, many on both sides who benefited from the Property looting, dont..c) Politics: Both local and International, each one with its own vile agenda for its presence on the Island. Basically, its mostly outsiders who get to decide what is to happen...Hope this answers the Million Dollar question why the Cyprus problem is still unresolved. Restitution would be the only right and lasting solution...Whoever local doesn't like can go back to Greece or Turkey and be a citizen there.

I know...huge shocker:
This is the 60’s and 70’s we are talking about, the hight of the *Cold War* .
Back then, the president of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III visited several Eastern Block nations and there were serious concerns among the Brits and especially USA that Cyprus could fall under the Soviet zone of influence under Makarios. So when it became clear that Cyprus was falling apart because of the Greek EOKA-B, Britain and USA secretly came up with a plan to encourage Turkey to invade the island in the mid 60’s and split it to have AT LEAST some strong anti-communist stronghold on the island.
The invasion didn’t happen...or to be more precise...it happened way later.
Greece was ruled by a military anti-communist dictatorship from 67 till 74. Who were obviously supported by the USA.
Another military coup ended the previous coup and America therefore got what it wanted:
These new militants were EXTREMELY pro-Enosis . So much so that they supported EOKA-B and the Cypriot National guard to overthrow the current regime.
5 days later Turkey intervened and captured 3% of the island.
The Greek Junta collapsed and month of peace talks began.
All seemed okay but on August 15 Turkey launched a second operation (Attila-2).
Only two nations were capable to stop Turkey: the US and Britain...but they allowed and even encouraged Turkey to carry out the operation so that they would all get the most desirable outcome. A nation with a strong anti-communist mindset.
So yes, Greeks are seen as the main reason of the Cyprus issue.
From the Akritas plan to EOKA-B and Enosis, from the countless of massacres to get rid from the ‘undesirables’ (Turks) to the forced expulsions leading into fortified enclaves all the way to the inevitable Greek coup.
But you should not forget that all off these things were set in motion, encouraged and promoted by these greater powers for their own interests.
The grandfather had great metaphors he seemed like a very kind creative person, what a sad adventure.
People in Cyprus in their younger years, were doing everything from scratch, and even if they didn't know how to, they learned from their neighbors. They were very creative and hard working people. It's really hard for me as a Cypriot to see my island being divided because of politics and beliefs. I'm 23 years old and I don't know if I am going to see a unified island in my lifetime.

As a Cypriot born after the war in the north this got me very emotional. I lost two uncle who were both young, just like a lot of families who lost someone. A lot of people think the same in the regard that we should unite . We speak two different languages and have two different religions but we are essentially the same people, we have the same values and traditions, we are so much a like. Truly amazing work by Yes Theory. I have definitely subscribed after this!

Political wars are really meaningless and just selfish interests of the countries' leaders. I think we people, in general, could definitely live in harmony it's just that there are a lot of powerful and influential people that are greedy and selfish who pull the strings and also corrupt the ideologies of some citizens leading to a lot of conflicts between societies.
I just hope one day we will all be living in a world with no major political conflicts.

All you could do is continue to bring goodwill to the Turkish citizens you meet, as them to pay it forward to all the Greeks that they meet in hopefully in time, both sides will pressure government to end these disputes because no one has ill will towards each other.
I was there in 2000. My dad was stationed in Nicosia for 3 years. It was crazy driving through there, seeing the abandoned gas station, airport, and a crashed fighter jet, just to go to the diplomat pool. People would also frequently drive go karts on the abandoned airport tarmac.
Also, as the son of a diplomat, I was allowed to travel with him back and forth between the Turkish and Greek sides. One of the more memorable experiences I had was trekking through the ruins of Kantara Castle which is on the northeastern coast. There's so many amazing sights and experiences on that island, and everyone was incredibly friendly from what I remember, both Greek and Turkish.

Well if i'm being honest, there aren't that many youths from the cypriot side willing to even communicate. What you saw there was about 0.00001% of the kids who would do that. A lot of cypriots, including myself wouldn't even bother with trying to contact the turks. The northern part of the island will encourage such communication because they want to be officially recognised which most cypriots would rather hang themselves than see it.

I was in Cyprus last year and visited the whole length of the country, experiencing both sides of the partition, so this video felt so surreal to watch as its places I’ve witnessed with my own eyes. I visited Verosha and it was truly just unlike anything I’d ever seen, and now with this added side from those who actually lived there it’s added even more meaning to my visit. Cyprus was so beautiful, from the places to the people and I’d love to visit again one day

I was 6 years old and i was living in a public orphanage in Athens Greece. A few months after the invation, the orphanage flooded with Cypriot kids, aged 5 to 17. It was unbelievable... I cannot imagine what those people whent through... uspeakable trauma. Greetings from Athens 😀

Turks should have accepted Cyprus right to join Greece - but with community rights for the Turks. Turks are from Central Asia, Greeks have been in Cyprus for 3,000+ years. Turkey can keep Cyprus when they recognise Kurdish and Armenian rights and independence.

Also, what guarantees would the Turkish community have, after what happened with Turks living in Crete, Rhodes or current Turkish population of Greece (mosly in Komotini and Macedonia)? Also, you are seriously dumb if you think Turkish Cypriots come from Central Asia. As a Turk, we know that although Turkish communities migrated to Cyprus through the Ottoman's Iskan policy, they mixed with the local population, meaning that modern day Turkish Cypriots have mixed DNA of Turks AND CYPRIOTS. I lived in Nothern Cyprus for 6 years and it was once of the best times of my life, but visiting Verosha aka The Ghost City, gave me an imagination of what the island could have looked like without the war
Just thought I'd provide some context, the "bullet" that they found is a blank shell casing. In the military we use these for training, and they don't actually shoot anything, just make noise. By the profile and size, I'd guess it's a NATO standard caliber, probably 7.62mm. All in all, amazing video guys!

And while 5.56 is used for individual weapons, medium machine guns and marksman rifles are still chambered in 7.62 to this day. My unit still regularly uses 7.62 machine guns. Blank cartridges "don't actually shoot anything" except a fuckton of hot gas. That gas is perfectly capable of maiming or even killing a person at point blank range. But they're not only used in training. They're used to launch rifle grenades (most likely how it ended up on the ground).
As a greek-cypriot who’s lived his whole life in cyprus first i want to thank you for the hard work that you put in for the making of this video. For us it’s a very sensitive and important topic and sadly noone really talks about it these days as the majority of people don’t believe that there’s really a solution to the problem.The history of cyprus is a very hard topic to talk about because it isn’t just the turkish invasion to the island but many events that led to the invation and many others that happened after it. Mistakes were made by both sides and Im glad that there’s still people out there who believe in a peaceful world where both Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots can live together. Honestly, it’s heartbreaking, seeing one of the prettiest places of your country ending up like this, knowing that those are the houses of your fellow citizens, which they had to abandon in order to stay alive. People left their lives there, they left their houses, their properties, their memories. And it breaks my heart, knowing that to this day, 47 years after the Turkish invasion(1974), they remain untouched.

You are awesome. I really enjoy the way you travel and meet the locals and try to understand their lifestyles. Being Christian Armenian, born in a Muslim country, Istanbul, Turkey, I have a very good idea what these people went through. It brought back lot of childhood memories, how us Christians were treated by the government as second class citizens in the country we were born in.

It’s such a pity that Varosha has been ransacked and looted by the soldiers who were supposed to protect it.
The only building that was “out of bounds” for the looters was the Golden Sands hotel, owned by the British Royal family. It still stands today, completely intact, even the curtains are drawn in most rooms.
This implies that most other buildings are in such disrepair due to looting/scrapping, and not decay. 😩

I've been to the Island myself and seen some of the ruins. The history may be dark, but the people are absolutely lovely and welcoming.
The government is at fault in every battlefield. The people was always nice towards each other nowadays!
