  • Tonight we find ourselves exploring the creepy abandoned Gundry Glass children's asylum in Baltimore with Dan Bell and Nation of Decay. The children's asylum was opened in 1880 for children with mental disabilities but after rumors of abuse and neglect an inspection of the asylum's practices lead to the locations closure in 2000. This children's asylum has sat abandoned ever since and is listed as on of Baltimore's most haunted locations. Join us as we explore this creepy location and come across some terrifying finds.

It was found in top left room dead, caught in the window, missing its tail. The generator used to start up on its own, and screaming came from top left room but nobody ever could find who was screaming

The reason why theres a lot of pink walls is because pink is used in asylums because the colour is soothing and makes you feel calm so if the patients are frustrated they have a lot of pink rooms for them to calm them down. I hope this was a cool fact about asylums :)

i think what makes abandoned buildings so scary is how it used to have a heyday, and was a place full of people and now it's all torn down and vandalized because there is currently nobody to keep it alive. and to correlate this with the fear of the unknown, in some or a few cases it isn't known why the building shut down and it is up to you to either imagine or find out the reason as to why the place ceased to run

And may those who did all those horrible things to those children find a special place in Hell, if they are not there already! I believe the children are with God in Heaven! Please guys, for your own savety: Take Helmets and Masks with you when you explore such old buildings. There is always a chance of falling debris that could hurt you realy bad if it hits you on the head. Also, all kinds of mold, asbestos and toxic stuff in paint (wich you can often find in really old buildings, lead or even arsenic was often used in victorian times for example) can affect your health really bad.
Well, there is nothing that can save you from my bad english (sorry for that, I'm not a native speaker ^^). Great Videos on this channel btw! I discovered it today and i guess it will keep me up tonight xD

I have read somewhere on the internet, cats when they get sick, tend to go away from public spots and die alone in quiet places. Once I have found a dead or two cats in our old house we bought decades ago in a village. Hence, there is no wonder, no mystery, no ghost killing cats... If there are ghosts I guess they have better things to do.

First video I watched from these guys. I loved that they were respectful to the property and had general safety in mind. Hearing noises and calling out just to warn any homeless people that they were there to explore. And staying together when they heard noises inside the house just in case they ran into anyone else. They didn't break anything, they weren't running around the house screaming about ghosts, and they were so careful with the items inside the house. Love seeing abandoned exploration videos that aren't about how many ghosts MUST be there.

The early treatments for mental illness were pretty brutal, even up into the 1940's and 1950's. I'm sure there were many deaths, and the families never claimed the bodies. Families abandoned members they couldn't care for at these kind of facilities. It's sad, our oldest state asylum has so many graves of unclaimed bodies. They spent their entire lives institutionalized. The hospital even grew its own animals and gardens to feed patients. Now there's laws requiring patient consent before undergoing experiments, but if a person is deeply disturbed or in a dissociative/psychotic state, how they can give proper informed consent. That's always bothered me about "modern" mental hospitals.

Of course some of the treatments were just like today- you think they are the best practice, but thirty years from now we will be looking back saying the same thing we are today about treatments a century ago.

Originally known as “Athol,” the large stone structure on the property was designed by Baltimore architect, T. Buckler Ghequier, the grandson of Robert Carey Long, Sr. (1760-1833), as a home for Charles Joseph Baker. Dr. Alfred T. Gundry acquired the property after Baker’s death and his family continued to operate the facility as a women’s sanitarium from the early 1900s through the late 1980s. Psychiatrist Dr. Sheldon Glass around 1988 and expanded the facility as a psychiatric hospital. The hospital facility closed in 1998 and the building has remained vacant up through the present. During the redevelopment of Uplands, Baltimore Heritage secured a commitment from Baltimore Housing to avoid any demolition. Unfortunately, continued neglect with no active plans for redevelopment places the building at significant risk of deterioration.

God Killer I worked in a building with a black mold problem, everyone was sick there. It gets in the air, all of the clothing we sold, and the cardboard boxes that products were in. It seems to penetrate everything that can soak up any moisture. The lead paint is a problem if you eat it, and the asbestos gets airborne if you drill into a wall or something to create dust. Those are fine as long as they're contained, many buildings still have lead paint and asbestos. I agree the mold is the worst!

It's really interesting to see a different photographer's perspective having watched Dan exploring in there. If there are people living there it's not apparent where their living space is since there's nothing to indicate recent habitation, and yet the cats suggest that someone is visiting or living there at the moment. Thank you for sharing Brennan, have a great time in Point Pleasant in a fortnight.

The issue is legality, since it was private property, if nobody can make contact with the owner or their lawyer, there is nothing anyone else can do. Judging by the rate of decay, the cost to renovate would be more than the place is worth. True the artisan manner of the decoration is priceless to the eye and those whom appreciate the craftsmanship; but I defer to the first part of this reply comment.

I think the tunnel you saw coming down into the basement is a coal chute: I grew up in a house built in 1918 in Dundalk, MD (east side of Balto county) and the basement still had a little cubby room into which coal had been delivered before the house was converted to oil. The look of the place takes me back - so many old field stone buildings in rural MD and PA...
