    Hey Bert, Your going well and the trail looks ace! Flapjacks, porridge and anything oats is good fuel, if your still struggling to eat try "Tailwind powder" I use it for big days out, its basically carbs, electrolytes and all the other good stuff you need to keep pedaling and it dissolves in water bottles. Highly recommended
    Chamois cream and 2 pairs of padded Lycra under shorts to rotate should help with saddle issues. Wash one, wear one........
    You will be a hardened cyclist by the end of the trail.
    Best. Ernie

  • @Mike-vd2qt
    @Mike-vd2qt ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Not feeling hungry sometimes is the altitude here in the western mountains. Re saddle sores, personal experience over 40 years bicycle touring. Lycra cycling padded shorts are designed for a fast 50 miles, three hours, on the road in a group ride..Then you peel off the wet padded shorts and take a shower. Bike touring is completely different. You are on the bike all day, 8 hours to 12 hours, and the padded Lycra bike shorts stay wet all day. That is a recipe for rapid bacteria growth. Wet abrasion and bacteria = saddle sores. Best cure is very light and thin 100% polyester stretch shorts like Patagonia brand Dirt Roamer Mtn bike shorts, or Patagonia Quandary 10" shorts. I've crossed the U.S. twice with them and half of the Great Divide. They are 100% Poly, dry fast when you take a break, and breath well. I've even worn Patagonia Surfing Board Shorts on the bike. The shorts worn Commando (no underwear) and a Brooks B-17 leather saddle work for touring. You can even take a shower with your clothes on, soap up well, rinse, and they will dry on you in half an hour. I'm also a fan of Patagonia's long sleeve Capilene Cool Daily shirts. Lastly, don't forget the Baby Wipes for your back end. :-) Happy Trails!

    • @matryderadventures
      @matryderadventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never considered the altitude. Maybe that's the issue. Fantastic information.about saddle sores. I may try riding without the bin shorts and look for your recommendations next time I'm in town. I have some thin polyester underwear which may have to do for now. Thanks for the info 👍👍

    • @tonypaddler
      @tonypaddler ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Mike, I very much agree with you regarding the underwear hygiene, padded shorts are much overrated for long distance cycle touring imo. I wear Decathlon 'cycling type' stretch poly-something-or-other unpadded shorts. Easy to wash, fast to dry. Two pairs, rinse and repeat.
      I also must try a Brooks B17 soon, get it worn in asap!

    • @tonypaddler
      @tonypaddler ปีที่แล้ว

      @@matryderadventures the underwear needs to be as long as traditional cycling shorts, so as not to ride up your thighs and bunch up into the sweaty crevices 'twixt groin and saddle.

    • @Mike-vd2qt
      @Mike-vd2qt ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tonypaddler Hey Tony, trick to the B-17 (40 years with them), when you first take it from the box lather both sides with Brooks Proofide leather dressing, thick application. Then take the saddle for a 15-25 mile ride. Most of it will soak in right away, apply another thick coat of Proofide on the underside only, and go for a ride the next day. Third day, you might need some more light dressing on the underside, but you might start to see two impressions forming where your sit-bones rest. After one week, and light coatings on the underside of saddle you will see it forming two spots for your sit-bones. The saddle should be almost there, and comfortable to ride for longer distances. Check after a month and if it is dry underneath add a thin coat of Proofide, then every six months should be fine. Happy trails!

    • @tonypaddler

    Mat, what bike are you riding? I've noticed its belt drive. Thank you for sharing. Ride On!

      I have a Sonder Broken Road. It's a British company. It has the Pinion 12 speed gearbox and a Gates Carbon belt. It worked flawlessly. Cheers 👍

      Thanks Mum. They were statue animals, all made of horse shoes. I should have got closer but was too tired.

      @@matryderadventures looks like July-August might be a better time to start from North to South. That June start looks rough with all the snow in the mountain passes.
      Thanks for the videos. I’ve been wanting to do this ride for years… hoping 2026 will be that year. I live decently close to New Mexico, so I may start there and go South to North. I appreciate all the info you share about camping and stops. I’m about 1/3 of the way through your playlist… taking notes! Thanks again!

    Keep track of your bike and watch it closely. Bike theft is rampant in the states.
