I’m a longtime Garmin user. The Apple Watch has always been interesting as an Apple user, but the battery life was a no go. I was on a Fenix 7 Sapphire for 8 months when the Ultra came out and decided to give it a go. I sold the Fenix. I’m impressed with the Ultra, it is lacking in some regards, particularly around interpreting metrics, but is very capable as a smartwatch. As for battery life, I’m averaging 30-50 minutes of GPS per day and 1-1.5 hours of workouts, no cellular, Bluetooth and wifi on, always on display except for ~8 hours while sleeping and during workouts, and getting a consistent average of 1.666% of battery use per hour or 60 hours of battery life. Very impressed with GPS accuracy, getting very consistent tracking and no issues under thick tree cover. I’m into trail running, but not so much really long distances, stick to under 25k/½ marathon max mostly, but could see going out to a 50k or 50 mile at some point and I think the Ultra will be able to handle it fine. Backpacking is what I’m worried about and might need to invest in a power bank for.
Sweet video man! I got 59 hours on my battery test, regular use, no cellular!! I am very impressed !!! Sending good vibes all the way from Winnipeg 😎 💪
@@ChaseTheSummit Fenix and Epix but depends upon the size of the watch. The S models are 8 hrs. The standard size is 10 and the X models look to be 10-15 hrs depending upon the model. Epix is 9 hrs. All of this is GPS+music
Awesome. Now I just need training readiness for other ghan running. I just changed from AWS6 Cellular to FR955 for training readiness/body battery and battery life. Love that it can function standalone.
I did a 20 mile run with the Ultra Saturday - about 3 hours 40 minutes full GPS/Cell turn on listening to downloaded Music and only lost 36% of battery. Only thing I changed was AOD was off. I am hoping to get through a 50K end of the month with the watch. Might turn off cell for the race.
Does the watch use Cellular if it's connected to a phone? In my case, I'm a cyclist. So I always have the phone in my back pocket. So, I wonder if I need to turn off cellular to see any battery benefit or whether, if it's connected to the phone I'm already seeing that benefit.

I recently upgraded and seriously considered the Apple watch. In the end I settled for a Fenix 7 Sapphire Solar, which at current prices are a fair bit cheaper than the Apple Ultra, but that was not my main reason. I think, like indicated in this video, that the apple watch outcompetes almost everything else in being a smart watch but for being a sport watch I still prefer the Fenix 7, which is a tool more so than a social media gateway, or an entertainment system for that matter. I do on average 1.5 hours of different tracked activity per day, and aside from that I use the watch mainly as a watch, and I get at least 8 days of battery life from a full charge, and sometimes more if the sun has been shining. I am sure the Apple watch is great and if money was no object I would probably have one in addition to my Garmin watch, just for fun.
I did the same. I returned my Apple Watch ultra and I keep my enduro 2. Apple Watch is an amazing smartwatch but battery and offline maps is something I need so it was an easy choice for me.
For me, the biggest impact on battery life is whether I am listening to music or podcast from my iPhone via bluetooth or from music or podcast downloaded to my U2. No question about it, downloading really saves battery life.
As usual…. Very well done! Thank you. I need at least 7 days of battery to even consider this device. Looking forward to version 2 and 3 of this watch.
I have also found if you are in a crappy cell phone reception area, the battery dies very quickly (no surprise as this happens with ALL phones). Thanks for this data, Dave!
And THIS is why I upgraded! I’m fully invested into the Apple ecosystem, so Apple Watches are the only smartwatches for me. I’m no extreme athlete nor adventurer. However, I love that I’m finally able to stream cellular music for my 1.5 hour gym workout (leaving phone in locker), get through the workday, and track my sleep that night all on one charge. Then I get up the next day and charge it during my morning bathroom routine to go do it all again. This just wasn’t possible on my previous AWs. Throw in all the other features and the fact that I like how it looks, and it was a no brainer for even just a casual gym rat like me!
Does it change if you use different apps for activity tracking e.g. work outdoors?? Also great content, I’m guessing this was very time-consuming getting the data.
WorkOutdoors consumes more battery if you leave the map page up the whole activity. If you leave it on a data screen it's similar to the regular workout app. Yes... this took a while to compile! Thanks for watching.
Thanks Dave! I recently sold the Garmin Tactix 7 Standard and purchased the Ultra. Personally, I grew tired of the unreliability and inconsistency of Garmin’s software (and hardware - weird button press issue) so I decided to give the Ultra a try. So far the Ultra has been fantastic to use and the hardware and software are as close to flawless as any company can achieve. As Apple continues to improve this series (and of course they will) Garmin is going to see their market share come under increased pressure.
@@kingjustice1831 I'm not so sure about that. It's taken a very long time for Apple to get here, and they've still got some way to go to get near Garmin's battery life. And the sacrifices made in the imminent ultra low power mode are quite significant.
Awesome video. This is inline with my ultra experience. I am wonder if I pair my Garmin HRM Pro plus what type of change would I see. Keeps up the great content.
This would have been even better if you had made a table at the end for all the modes and showing heart rate/GPS status and ping rates, music downloaded/streamed, etc. as a summary diagram.
I just bought a cerfitird used ultra 1 on ebay and is running fine but only charged to 80% overnight. I closed optimised and changed the brick and the wall. I am also using the apple cable. How do i fix
I charged it 100% out of the box, used it and it lasted 5 days with my routine. Once it charged back to 100% I kept it solely in "low power" mode thinking it would be longer but oddly enough, also lasted 5 days.
I’ve tried Garmin watches over the years because I really liked them, but they kept breaking. None of my apple watches broke and I got use to replying to messages and answering calls on my watch. Each watch comes with their own pros and cons, and I choose Apple Watch for my use.

I'd drop the whole "Apple Watch Ultra" thing and just say Ultra after the first or second mention. Just saying.. Thanks for the video and effort though very helpful and concise.
Excellent reviews of the Apple Watch Ultra. You are very detailed and very informative. I am sold. I will be getting my watch on October 21. Keep up the great work and you are truly appreciated.
You’re reviews on the Garmin Fénix 6s was the reason I got my 6X Sapphire. Now you’re convincing me to get this Apple Watch Ultra. Lol I definitely do not want texts and stuff alerting me all day. I hope that’s possible. It’s been since the Apple Watch 3 that I’ve had one.
Just out of curiosity, what’s the difference between low power mode initiated on the watch vs low power mode in the watch app on the phone under workouts? And is Apple’s “future low power mode” essentially the same as the phone watch app?
Really good review. You are the only one I have seen who has done a torture test on the watch. I’d love to see something similar using the Fenix 7X. Not sure if you’ve already done that or not.
I have to say the Apple Watch Ultra is a huge step forward for Apple, but the battery life still needs to be increased and feedback on the metrics is much needed. 12 hours with the default settings is too low, 17 hours with low power mode is more acceptable, but still leaves many people behind, those doing the "ultra" kind of run which is implied in the watch name. If apple manages to improve over those points in the next generations, it will be a serous competitor for brands such as Garmin, Polar, Suunto o r Coros. For me a typical scenario I do a few times a month is the one I did yesterday: charging the watch before I go to sleep, sleep with it, leave my home around 4:30am, and get back home 12 hours later, with some driving, eating, and an 8-10 hours GPS activity in between. The watch using the defaults would probably record my activity but would die before I get home in the best case scenario, or it would simply die before finishing my activity at all. Using low power may give more battery to spare, but I don't see it surviving to the next day. I have a very basic Polar Vantage M2, with the previous scenario my watch had around 50% battery when I got home, and still has 38% left which will probably last me until Wednesday doing my regular early jogs in the morning and my gym activity in the night.
I sure hope theres a huge discount for fenix 7 or enduro 2 on black friday/cyber monday. The fenix 7 will almost be 1 year old now and theres starting to be cheaper competition.
Ive had it for two weeks now and im persistently getting 52 hours of normal use. Was going for a 2 hours jog with downloaded music - that took out precisely 20% so it really depends on how much time in 3~ days one spends working out.

@@flatbedfrank2023 Hi Frankie, I actually tried the Apple Watch Ultra and found out it was too big for my wrist. So I returned it and now using a Apple Series 8 41mm with gps and cellular with my iPad. Going to do some battery testing. Since the Apple Watch has a smaller battery, I should be able to use it as a dumb phone. Black screen, use it for Apple Pay, 1-2 phone calls, and 1-2 texts. Keep you posted
Bought my first apple watch , and the habit of charging it every time you take a shower (in the morning and evening, twice a day), as i overheard from someone, actually looks to be bullet-proof battery-wise. Not yet dropped below 20%, nor charged above 80%, the battery could retain its capacity for years in this regime, while the watch is on the wrist 23+ hours a day.
I’m currently still using my Apple Watch Series 6 after two years, with battery health at 82% and I am still consistently getting 34 hours. Mind you I’m not super active. I drive a truck for a living. However, even at 82% battery health it’s lasting 34 hours so that’s pretty impressive. I can’t wait to get the Apple Watch Ultra. That is my next one. Hopefully very soon.
I have AOD, cellular, reply to messages through my phone, have a sleep tracking app, and have the gps always on; I just looked in my settings under battery and the last time I charged it was Saturday 9:14pm, its now 818am Monday and im at 25%, so im at roughly 35 hours of usage with another 6 hours left. Ultra is on point
Thanks as always for another excellent vid. I’m seriously tempted by one (currently on 2nd Garmin, now a Fenix 6 Pro) as it solves most the reasons why I never got an Apple Watch before.
Battery life has been one single thing keeping me away from getting an Apple Watch. The specced 18-36 hrs simply is a no-no for me. My current watch (non-apple product) keeps up and running for almost 2 weeks with the settings I need. So my question is, if I don't want to keep display always on, turn off all the connectivity completely (I can check messages etc directly from my phone), no wifi, no cellular, occasional gps (when running), heart rate etc health sensors always on - how long would an Apple Watch tick?
I recently bought the Garmin Epix 2 and I’m really pleased with it, did consider the Apple Ultra. The Garmin suits my needs better. Really enjoy your channel, thank you 🏃🏻♂️🏅🙌
I did 30 minute outdoor run activity with my watch ultra streaming podcasts using cellular and listening through my bluetooth jabra 75t, always on display off, and it used a 6%. previously on my watch series 5, doing the same would use 15%. I think you must had had really low cellular coverage to use 30% for 1hr run on your ultra with these kind of settings
It's a great video again. Thanks! Can I charge AWU during activity tracking? If I use bluetooth HR sensor, the optical HR sensor is not necessary. I am currently using a Garmin Fenix 6X Pro and sometimes I run or ride over 20 hours.
For my purposes, ScubaDiver, free diver, running outside, and hiking. I ended up replacing my Galileo Sol (dive computer) and Apple Watch series 5 for one hella expensive Garmin Descent Mk2i. I know the Ultra can do diving, but with Apple limiting it to 40 meters and no air integration, no tri mix. Only last a couple of days instead of 16 days on my Mk2i. It was honestly a no brainer. At least for my uses that is
Great info… might have missed it but what about this: Trail running with full gps mode, watch only no phone - full cellular, playing downloaded music … ?
Thank you for the very informative video. So I have been able to use the watch for about 48 hours in the last few days until I had to charge the watch again. But charging the watch takes quite a long time, more than 2 hours from 12 percent to 100 percent. How long did it take you to recharge?

Thanks as always for another excellent vid. I’m seriously tempted by one (currently on 2nd Garmin, now a Fenix 6 Pro) as it solves most the reasons why I never got an Apple Watch before.
It's a great watch if you like Apple Watch platform!
Will the AWU be replacing your Garmin watch for future runs
I'm not sure about that! It's a great watch though. At this point I don't really have a "regular daily wear". I blame this channel!
I recently bought the Garmin Epix 2 and I’m really pleased with it, did consider the Apple Ultra. The Garmin suits my needs better. Really enjoy your channel, thank you 🏃🏻♂️🏅🙌
finally something good !!!
Very usefully video my friends
I did 30 minute outdoor run activity with my watch ultra streaming podcasts using cellular and listening through my bluetooth jabra 75t, always on display off, and it used a 6%. previously on my watch series 5, doing the same would use 15%. I think you must had had really low cellular coverage to use 30% for 1hr run on your ultra with these kind of settings
That's possible. I did a few tests with similar results but a couple of them were long trail runs in the woods so that might have played a role!
I would love to see this done with an SE 2…, great video. Keep up the great work
I'll have SE2 coverage soon! Busy Busy!
@@ChaseTheSummit appreciate it
Briljant video
At least for my uses that is
Dude, this thing rips!!! Can wait to see what the apple watch becomes over the next few years :) We are spoiled with the options we have in 2022.
Great info… might have missed it but what about this:
Trail running with full gps mode, watch only no phone - full cellular, playing downloaded music … ?
It's in there, I lost around 12% per hour in my testing with pre-downloaded music which would give around around 7-8 hours of use.
@@ChaseTheSummit brilliant … thanks 🙏… that’s the one!
Thank you for the very informative video. So I have been able to use the watch for about 48 hours in the last few days until I had to charge the watch again. But charging the watch takes quite a long time, more than 2 hours from 12 percent to 100 percent. How long did it take you to recharge?
Superb video, really informative!
