      My wrist is 17.5cm and I still got and use a small strap. It fits well, however the gap to get the watch on and off is a little tight, but the strap buckle does sit under my wrist. I would suggest for 15cm wrist that the small strap would be better. 👍🏻 (I also know someone who has a 18cm wrist and manages with small strap but did change to a medium later)

    I got the ultra a month after its release, and have loved it since it arrived. But it REALLY won me over when I had a motorcycle accident. It automatically called the police and ambulance services to my location. It also informed my partner that I was in an accident, where the accident happened, and sent her periodic updates as to my location while I was in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. The most amazing thing is that it didn't even get the slightest scratch, and still looks brand new. Bloody love this watch.

    I don't do extreme sports anymore but i do have cancer and i get dizzy and fall a lot, i also get low blood pressure and fast and low heart rates so i bought the Ultra mainly for the fall detector and the siren so it will tell me if I'm walking unsteadily and also turn on the siren automatically if i fall.. and it works.. i fell in the shower and my kids were out in the driveway and heard the loud siren and came inside to help me. i also like that it alerts me if my oxygen level is low and of my heart rate and reminds me when to take meds. but they might all do those. it also checks your temperature which is nice. i have tiny little wrist and it took a good week to get use to and its heaver than my other large iwatches. i have to keep a bandaid on my wrist bone bc it sits right on top and bruises it but i would buy it again and love it so far. also I havent charged it but once since i got it and that was about 5 days ago. will need to charge tonight probably but its been at 10% all day.

      So I think the way Apple is marketing it is probably right. For someone who is coming from the Apple ecosystem or a previous Apple Watch, the comparison to the Series 7 Titanium is pretty obvious. Apple is trying to go after the Garmin / Polar / Suunto users who could care less what last years titanium watch cost since it didn’t remotely do what they want.

  • @krakentowa8727

    You’re totally right. The way the Ultra has been marketed is counter intuitive……presenting it as being for “elite athletes “ and extreme sports people immediately makes the other 99.5% of the population assume the Ultra isn’t for them. Whoever suggested that idea and whoever approved it need their asses kicking. It’s marketing 101….you want to sell an item, make everyone believe that they need one. So silly to market it to a handful of end users.

    • @ThoughtsOnThings
      @ThoughtsOnThings  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Did seem a bit odd to me. Appreciate it’s supposed to be aspirational marketing but I think they could have tweaked the narrative slightly at launch event.. 🤷‍♂️

      Why kick their donkeys?

    • @bbde1980
      @bbde1980 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would disagree here. The way they market the Ultra is more or less how (Swiss) luxury tool watches of IWC and the like are typically being marketed. Present extreme features only relevant to fighter pilots and other extreme users, and many of the „normal population“ will want to feel as if they belong to these extreme groups. This is actually a classic marketing strategy, in which you need you need a highly demanding and well respected user segment to drive demand and desire.
      Apart from the fact that I learned such cases in my MBA, I can say it totally worked for me. When the new Top Gun movie came out, I immediately wanted a new IWC. Now Apple released the Ultra, I bought it, and my desire for a Swiss watch is gone. At least for me, Apple just killed high-end tool watches.

    • @Mack8907
      @Mack8907 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s not Marketing 101- Marketing 101 has a few different marketing principles. This one builds a Target Persona (Elite Athletes) and then breaks into the current market with a ‘better’ product geared towards that persona. This is an “extension of a line” and they marketed to a subset of people that they aren’t currently getting sales from.

    This finally made me to buy a watch from apple. I am a bit of a watch collector, so it was mostly that, and the flat shape change, design change, plus my plus obsessive choice to always buy the titanium version of every watch in my collection moved me. I could care less about the most “extreme” version. Pretty happy about all that. I think a tonne of watch of collectors are coming across.

    My first Apple Watch was a series 2. The biggest reason why I went to Garmin was because of battery life. After 4 years, that 2 week battery life on the Garmin was finally down to about 2 days if I was lucky. I need a new watch. I decided to go with the series 7, and it was a great watch. I was able to squeeze out close to 2 days of use if it was used sparingly. Then I saw the launch presentation, and was instantly drawn to the Ultra. I haven’t even had it for 24 hours yet, but with some pretty heavy use checking it out, I’ve still got 89% of the battery after close to 15 hours. The size is right where my Garmin was (50mm), and I missed that larger screen with the 45mm series 7. I chose the Ocean band mainly because I’m not a fan of hooks and Velcro. It’s definitely a stout watch, and I know that whatever I can throw at it, it’ll be able to handle it.

    That makes sense in the States. I live in Italy. Here we have 22% VAT. The Series 8 costs EUR 509,00 for the aluminum and EUR 909,00 for the stainless steel. The Ultra has a massive price tag of EUR 1.009,00. The Series 8 then costs half the price of the Ultra. In this case I think that the 8 would be more popular and affordable for "everyday use". We're not talking about 50 USD difference...

    Not sure why you said nobody is talking about the pricing on the Ultra. Lots of people have mentioned the pricing on the Ultra! If you look a delivery times for some models that are 8-10 weeks, people have noticed. I do think they are selling a lot of the Ultra to regular people and casual athletes. Just because it can be used for diving and marathons doesn’t mean only those people will buy it. Many people buy diving watches because they like the look, not because they intend to dive with it. This watch will continue to expand Apple’s dominance in the smartwatch category.

    I had this watch. I am a big guy. 6’2 with medium build. I liked the size of it and the look of it on my wrist. I kept it for 2 weeks and just couldn’t get used to the size and the weight. It’s just too thick and I was constantly hitting the crown and main button when doing various things at work and setting the siren off. I never inadvertently pushed this buttons on my 4 series 44mm ever. Not once in 4 years.
    At the Apple Store the lady said they are getting a lot of returns and it’s always the same complaint. Too big and too uncomfortable. I have my 4 back on and I’m thinking about what’s next.

    The Ultra is priced very well considering you’re getting a much better more capable titanium watch vs the SS Series 8 45mm Cellular, which is just $50 less. I am finding that my battery lasts anywhere from 48-60 hours with moderate to heavy usage. It is connected to my phone more often than not, but that’s still a big leap for the Apple Watch.

    for starters I got my ultra the last month and it was a huge jump for me from the first SE model the 40mm (that was tiny) but fine, then I got the ULTRA, to be honest it's good and more importantly it's really tough and rugged, the outer body is so strong I accidentally banged it several times and nothing happened to it, I kept seeing that the screen is strong as well but I can't go moving around with no screen protector on it considering it's an expensive watch so I got my screen protector, now let me be honest on something Apple is good at doing there job but if only they did it better, the number one issue with all the watches including the ultra is battery, let's not stop talking about it, Garmin 30 days single charge, Huawei watches (the GT line from 11 to 14 days and the regular ones that almost look like bands from 7 to 10 days, the past models of the apple watches can last literally 17 hours but with a little bit of tweaking it can last 26 hours, the ultra can reach 60 hours yeah but still a watch with all these features why the battery isn't that great. that is all and have great day everyone

      Apple Watch has a amoled screen like the Garmin Epix 2 and 2 pro and give about 5 days give or take and slightly more depending on model size and more if you turn off always on display ect ect. Most Garmin watches use memory-in-pixel (MiP) displays and what gives them amazing battery life but duller screens, turn on the highest setting like multi band GPS and see how fast the battery lasts along with amoled screen and then in the same time frame as Apple Watches, the Garmin 47 and 51mm Fenix 7 and a few other models are big thick chunk watches allowing for bigger battery’s, I’m not on biased on either as like both brands for different reasons.

    Nicely paced and voiced video. Seems to be getting rare these days to find a non-shouty factual and easy to listen-to voiceover. I bought an Ultra today and I immediately didn't like the faffy new band (maybe it's just me but it feels a bit like an overdesigned, yet not robust, "clasping" mechanism/hook and sleeve). So I just took the Velcro-like one off the previous series and for now attached that instead. e.g. If I'm using the MacBook Pro, I don't want that little hook scratching-up the surface. Anyways, subscribed to see what you get up to... thanks.

      In reality, how many real divers, hard core rock climbers, hikers, etc. would actually use this watch? I just bought one and I love it. I’m in agriculture so I bought it for the ruggedness and because it was finally time to upgrade from the series 2. Longer battery life and a whole bunch of other features. It’s basically the pro model many people have been waiting for. If I was in the market for a new watch when the series 7 came out, I would’ve considered the titanium. At the least, I definitely would’ve felt like they did an even better job with the ultra if they did market it that way. I agree it’s not necessarily designed for the same consumer, but we all know it’s going to be the same returning consumers for the newest premium apple tech, and then some new ones lol.

    I suspect the Ultra didn’t come in additional colors because it is advertised as a sports watch, and as such, would be scraped up in short order. Any anodized coloring they added would look awful after the first few athletic events. If the anodized coating gets scuffed up just plugging in cables into the ports on the MacBook Air M2 midnight color, what would a watch look like after months of activity? Instead, Apple left the titanium as its natural color, so any scuffing won’t really change its appearance. As long as its advertised as a rugged watch, I wouldn’t expect any more colors.

    • @melgross
      @melgross 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The great thing is that Apple has lots of authorized third party band manufacturers, and while maybe a bit too thin, all of the large size watch bands fit the Ultra. I’m happy because I have the black stainless bracelet, which I’ve worn for over 7 years now, and I love. But those third parties will shortly come out with plenty of unique bands for these. Everyone will be able to find a band they like. That’s the great thing about Apple selling so many watches. These companies have been falling over themselves to make the best accessories, not to mention those unknown brand Chinese products.
      I don’t think Jobs would have done anything he’s saying here.

    • @techinrl9869
      @techinrl9869 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Noah6692 I’m not sure how well that would work. Ceramic is more brittle and heavier than titanium, not a good thing for a watch expected to take a lot of physical punishment. The bottom of the watch is ceramic where it’s not exposed. The watch already being over 61 grams in weight would weigh even more if the entire frame were ceramic. Titanium is lighter and stronger than stainless steel. Last time Apple made a ceramic watch, the 44mm titanium watch weighed 41.7g while the ceramic 44mm weighed 46.7g. A ceramic Ultra might weigh close to 70g. If I were to guess, probably around 68g.
      If Apple decides next year that more ordinary people are buying it than adventurers, they might relent and allow more colors for the titanium, but caution that true adventurers should buy the basic silver.

    • @melgross
      @melgross 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Noah6692 the back is zirconium dioxide. You can’t make it any color. They use it because it’s very strong and hard. 100%, in fact at the tech company I worked for that was a conversation we used to have on calls re rugged watches. The reality is that it’s not very sexy marketing going after construction workers directly so it’s often perceived to be ignored, even though Apple will be well aware that they’ll be a lot of construction workers buying this. The other interesting niche is baristas, who are constantly banging their hands / wrists on things in a busy environment. The marketing is all physical pursuit focused, but the intended market is much much bigger!

      I've never been on a trail run and needed to check email or send a sms text, it's the last thing I'm thinking of. This isn't a dedicated watch with the actual sports features people are actually using, that's why Garmin is selling Epix, Tactix, Vertix and Fenix watches. The Ultra still doesn't come close to the battery life of a Garmin watch. This is a watch for people who have lower tier usage needs who buy expensive outdoor clothes for fashion. This is the same company that removed a RCA jack to sell their bluetooth headset at a premium price.

      @@ijaxon6675 - Those are fair points. From my end, I’m actually a cyclist, so checking the screen itself is the furthest thing from my mind (Unless it’s my bike computer). I currently use a Garmin Venu, which has fantastic battery life. I wanted to give the Watch a try because, as it so happens, I’m also now spending time in the woods and mountains, places where I’d like something more than the Venu, with things like maps and safety features. Having one device that I like to do it all PLUS be my daily driver PLUS have great phone integration is a attractive option, especially since I don’t feel I do it enough to justify getting individual pieces of dedicated equipment. I have had a series 0 and a series 1 since their release. Aluminum. Never had any case or screen damage. I wore it every day doing building maintenance, car repair, etc. I really like the 38mm size of my series 1 (my series 0 was a 42MM). I didnt baby it by any means, and they handled everything I ever threw at it. I'm curious as to how much damage people are really doing to their aluminum watches.
    When I looked to upgrade this year, I wanted the ultra, but 1) the size is just too big to be practical for me. I don't need a dive computer size watch for everyday wear. I wish there were other sizes. 2) only 1 color. I like raw titanium, but something a bit more muted would be nice. 3) I don't need the cellular option...which is not an option.
    If Apple would release a smaller version of the Ultra without Cellular and perhaps with other color options, I would by it, I think others would too. Until then, I am happy with my aluminum Series 8, it does everything I need it to do.
    By the way, my original apple watches still work, still hold a charge for a full day, and I have handed them down to my kids. Apple offered me nothing for trade in on them.

    Apple's "sapphire" is to be taken as regular glass. It scratches at a 6, just like glass, not an 8 like sapphire. While they do technically use sapphire in the places they claim to, it's some of the worst sapphire on the market, with many impurities, causing it to scratch, crack, and shatter like glass. I still bought the watch, because the diving feature alone is worth the difference in price to me over the series 8. Ceramic as the primary case material never made sense to me. It's extremely fragile, which is probably why they used so little of it in the titanium version.

    I always thought the Apple Watch was too small. Finally the Watch Ultra is the correct size!

    You’re completely right. When apple unveiled it I was thinking ok, this is starting at least 1299 maybe higher… I was shocked when they priced it at 799.

    Just discovered your channel !
    Awesome thoughts about this product and loved the way you show this watch, like many here I like this watch a lot but felt guilty to not be an hardcore guy..
    Weird that apple didn't said some of the points you showed. Anyways,
    Really good video ! thank you !

    More and more I understand why people prefer Garmin ⌚ over Apple watches.

    Awesome video. I just ordered my watch. Upgraded from a series 2 to the Ultra. I used your link to buy the screen protector.

    How does the cellular part work? Do you put a sim in it?

    • @ThoughtsOnThings
      @ThoughtsOnThings  ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope it’s all done via digital sim (e-sim). In most cases you’ll have to take out a separate data plan for it though, not something they will let you do on an existing plan, which is pretty frickin unfair and annoying!

    Awesome video mate! How do you find it fits compared to your previous watch now that you've worn it for a while?

      Thanks 🙏 Love it - only annoyance is sleeping in it so far, apart from that zero complaints- and want some more colours! Hope it’s a little thinner in next iteration 👍
