As someone who lives in Hawaii, this was so incredibly cool, but... hearing the pronunciations actually hurt my soul. Still, the intent was there, and you get all the bonus points, guys!
We had a Hawaiian record themselves saying the names for us, and gosh, we did try, but pronunciation isn't really our strong suit! Thanks for bearing with us.
You actually did the pronunciation of Hawai'i reasonably well. You used the shortened common pronunciation that sounds like Hawa'i, but that's not bad. Note the ' between the i'i or a'i. That's like the sound we make in English when we say uh oh. It's called an 'okina and it's the second most common consonant in the Hawaiian language after K. You also did it right with Ka'ahumano. Unfortunately you entirely skipped that 'okina entirely in words like Moloka'i, O'ahu, and Lana'i. It's a common mistake, but it'd be about like leaving a ck sound out of backing and saying ba-ing. Kinda doesn't work...
Hawaiian just doesn't have enough phonemes damnit ;) Seriously though... It is hellishly difficult for some of us native indo-european speakers. I actually have my 6yo pronounce names for me sometimes because he is so much better at it than I am. He also remembers Hawaiian names way better than I do, so I'll ask him for driving directions sometimes.
Molokai then went on to become an island where lepres were banished to. It remained fairly unknown, until the Flemish (Belgian) priest Jozef De Veuster landed there. He was admired by even the Protestants and eventually declared a Saint by the Catholics under the name 'Pater Damiaan' - Father Damian.
This is so fascinating! Thank you so much for making this! I love learning the histories of less well known countries and kingdoms, so this is especially interesting to me.
Chaospork, a lot of people are aware of Hawaii as a State, but are not aware of the Kingdom of Hawaii that existed before hand. younger people often forget it didn't become a state until August 21, 1959, given it's been a state all their lives
ChandlerTV100 Honestly hoping they do a series on David the Builder of Georgia. A very interesting ruler with an interesting story that I would love to see.
Interesting point about the Russian ship docking at Hawaii and about the Alaskan governor. We don't hear much about Russian sea ferrying in that period.
One critical thing: They *kinda* live on mini-reservations (homesteads), although it's an opt-in and are generally well-protected locally. They certainly would've been better off under Britain, as the royalty of Hawaii did what they thought would protect their people and would've maintained the power to do so if they became part of the United Kingdom. They were certainly well-loved in British court, to such a point that Hawaiian royalty could've been part of the House of Lords and their representatives in the House of Commons, therefore the Hawaiian islands wouldn't be territory of, but rather a (quite powerful) member of the United Kingdom. Had history taken a different path, Hawaiians would have British passports and would've voted on Brexit...
So, to avoid his ships being confused with British/ American ones, he designed a flag that looks like a cross between the two? Not sure I follow the logic.
He had been using the British Merchant flag with the union jack in the corner and a red field as his banner up to that points since it was gifted to him by Vancouver in 1791. The "Bostonians" advised him to change the flag so he changed the rest of the field to the stripes while keeping the Union Jack for continuity and the power of 'protection' since at the time Britannia ruled the waves. That loyalty was latter rewarded when during the Paulet affair (1843) they let the Kingdom remain independent instead of using it as precursor to outright annexation.

3:34 - "The new system also granted *use* of the land rather than *ownership*." Ah I see, so that's where the current gaming industry got their ideas of "licensing" their games to those who buy them, rather than granting ownership.
Leasehold, feudal practise in Medieval England that's still in use today. A farmer to earn a few extra bucks will partition part of his land in to plots, build houses then sell the houses while retaining ownership of the land itself.

Church of England has recently been mass registering every medieval easement it can find in its archive so that it owns Shale gas deposits under its property since in medieval times the church traditionally owned mineral rights.
It got pretty messed up during the colonial / plantation era, but still has some real merit for a handful of islands in the middle of the Pacific. Land is a pretty limited resource here, especially when you're talking about arable land. Oh, there are also some social institutions, most notable being the Kamehameha Schools, which get their funding from a royal land-usage-grant. A bit like land-grant universities on the mainland. PS: Don Reynolds: A bunch of cities in SoCal were built on land long-term leased from the Irvine Ranch. Today, driving with pork on the highway can cause your car to stall and shut off for offending Pele. The Kapu system is still in place in Hawaii, as any ruins of Hawaiian settlements or structures are considered sacred and thus forbidden to be trespassed on. And trust me when I say, if the locals don't give you hell, the spine tingling fear you get from crossing into it will prevent you from crossing into those sites.
Nu'uanu Pali. The real kapu system is gone. The modern shit isn't real or the same. In the ancient system men and women can't eat together and were forbidden to eat certain foods and touching the shadow of the alii chiefs or not kneeling before them meant instant death.
AlohaKavebear Fair enough. The only time I ever encountered the kapu system in real life was when me and my friends walked by some ruins and they told me that it was forbidden to trespass
Something like the Kapu system is pretty much the way law worked everywhere at some point. Government = sovereign = religion, so religious edicts are law and visa versa. Love Hawaii, but Kapu seems bad for the same reason as Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Arguably a bit worse since it had the nobility and aristocracy are mostly above the law crap too (could also be described as a caste system). Anyways, not something to be too smug about "looking down on", but also not something we should pretend was good just because of "heritage".
His life was kind of like a lot of ck3 campaigns, you start of as someone small for a good challenge, your unify/ form and empire, and then as soon as you die your kingdom just falls apart
Over the past week or so, I have enjoyed many of these short stories! As a lover of history, but also as a busy college student, I find the shortened and humorous nature and graphics of these stories to be useful, refreshing, and a good source of information! Keep it up, Extra Credits! I've already recommended this series to one of my high school teachers, and anticipate I will continue to do so for many more!
Why is it that all of the WW2 Extra History episodes and the latest Articles of Confederation don't have lies episodes? Those are some of my favourite things you do because admitting mistakes makes people trust you alot more! And if there happened to not be mistakes, I always loved it when James answered audience questions. Hope they will be returning!
Breezeshooter Well that's stupid. How can we then know if the information is correct or if it's some propaganda by the sponsors (maybe that's a stretch but you get the idea :p)
This is awesome! I had heard of Kamehameha before but all I was told was, "Kamehameha founded the island of Hawaii." I had no idea that he was such a gifted diplomat, strategist and general. Thanks, EC!
Indeed. A shame his kid basically screwed it up and allowed the missionaries in(who in turn would build plantations that grew and grew until they effectively ran the place, kicked out the monarchs, and signed up to join the US)
This story really breaks my heart so much. By this one man's hand, this culture should've been considered an equal to the cultures of Europe when so many others vanished under the boot of imperialism. Hawaii, and Polynesian societies as a whole (looking at you, Gate-Pa), deserve so much better than the hand they were dealt. Their capabilities in the face of adversity and a changing world are a bloody modern legend, and their achievements should should be sung in history forever.
Only two vids? In school I loved studying Hawai'i history, Kamehameha and Liliʻuokalani. I could spend all day watching! Been a long time since I've seen any Island history. Thanks!
This series is really great and it was interesting to see how the first Hawaiian Ruler was, but now I really want to see you guys cover Captain Cook because of all the references to him
@@zohufnm9871 well, kinda. There are a bunch of different versions of the story, some saying he shot a Hawaiian man, and others saying the Hawaiians performed a Ritual Sacrifice on him after mistaking him for the God Lono (later accounts by Hawaiians have confirmed that they did mistake Cook for a god), but I believe the most accepted version of the story is that some of the younger tribe members still from Cook’s Fleet and he attempted to take some of their property as a bartering chip until his own stuff was returned to him (as he’d had to do several times before), however the Hawaiians didn’t understand that was what he was doing and speared him to death when he tried. Either way, I still wanna see Extra Credits cover Captain Cook, especially to help clear up the misconceptions about him being evil
@@kronosunleashed3845 him being evil isn’t a misconception. Well he wasn’t a super bad person. But he was mistaken for Lono when he first came during the times of peace. It was a ancient Hawaiian prophecy that lono would arrive during times of peace followed by islands. He would arrive to feast and party. When he left he wasn’t supposed to come back but he did anyway. And unlucky for him he came back during times of war.
@@zohufnm9871 oh no, I’m talking about the misconceptions about him being evil in places like Australia, where many people think he’s the ultimate symbol of British Colonialism and a ruthless racist that massacred the local people. It’s a not uncommon opinion I hear about him, which is weird since he specifically pushed Britain away from colonising Australia and even had a sign on the mast of the Endeavour that said harming the locals of the places they visit without good reason would receive capital punishment
@@zohufnm9871 and yeah, I’m pretty sure the Hawaiians of the time just didn’t know what to think about the fact that Lono had returned. From the way I understand it, they are the time believed that Lono was on a quest for the woman he loved and then sending him on his way after throwing a celebration for him was a way for them to make goodwill with the gods, then him returning was an extremely worrying sign
Kamehameha is known in Argentina for being one of the first heads of state to recognize Argentina (then named "United Provinces of the Rive Plate") as a sovereign state. Apparently, French corsair Hipolite Bouchard, sailing under Argentine flag, came into contact with the Hawaian king and the latter helped him put down a mutiny. As a way of saying thanks, the king was named _Coronel de las Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata_ by Bouchard.

Small village of Honolulu, lol.... We're an internationally recognized city now. And one of America's major cities. Not to mention, the biggest city in the pacific excluding southeast Asia.
Tell me if I'm wrong but the picture at 1:19 seems to indicate that there were women in the armed forces. I only say that because some of the soldiers with rifles have eyelashes which you're artist uses a one of the short hands for designating women.
I looked it up. Seems that after the defeat and sacrifice of Keoua, Young and Davis were allowed to form a small company of female warriors armed with rifles. That's quite a nice touch Extra Credits! As a side note, if anyone has any more information of the issue (especially properly histrorical books or articles) I would love to read it as the article I read this from didn't go into much detail on the subject.
1:43 the place where they fought that battle is called the Pali (or Poli, not sure) Lookout, and yes, it is a very impressive 1,000ft cliff. A fierce wind blows up the cliff side, and it's said to be the screams of the warriors who were driven off the cliff to their deaths. There are also a lot of bees there, for some reason. Or at least there were when I was a kid. I got stung there for the first time, and so that's why I remember it. I only found out the scream legend thing later.
Hawaiis history is honestly interesting. Its kinda funny how deeply rooted alot of American cultural aspects are., that we mirror so much in modern governments and beleifs. Its wild how Kamehamehas policies mirrored exactly what the US promoted during its existence.
funny fact! Kamehameha I, is the first king or head of state and hawaii is the first country in recognize Argentina as a free country. was an expedition with corso patent of the captain Antonio Bouchard in the ship "la argentina" by signing treaties between the captain and the king in 1818.

Junk Phu
I got beaten the fuck up when I tried to climb the walls of that one Heiau in Big Island.
Wtf am I reading more history no thx. Dbz
His life was kind of like a lot of ck3 campaigns, you start of as someone small for a good challenge, your unify/ form and empire, and then as soon as you die your kingdom just falls apart
love throwing in windows xp vs vista and this series is really interesting
Over the past week or so, I have enjoyed many of these short stories! As a lover of history, but also as a busy college student, I find the shortened and humorous nature and graphics of these stories to be useful, refreshing, and a good source of information! Keep it up, Extra Credits! I've already recommended this series to one of my high school teachers, and anticipate I will continue to do so for many more!
Can you imagine another nation combining every single flag of their friends?

Kamehameha's Captain "They look thirsty!"
Kamehameha "Well, let's give them something to drink! Spartans! TO THE CLIFFS"
kamehameha looks more like a genkidama (spirit bomb).
People from Hawaii, give me your energy!

Happy King Kamehameha Day from Hawai'i!
actually he that much troops when he invade Oahu
Why is it that all of the WW2 Extra History episodes and the latest Articles of Confederation don't have lies episodes? Those are some of my favourite things you do because admitting mistakes makes people trust you alot more! And if there happened to not be mistakes, I always loved it when James answered audience questions. Hope they will be returning!
I assume the Articles of Confederation Lies will come next week. The Bismark series had a comment that answered questions under part 4.
They don't do lies for sponsored episodes
Breezeshooter Well that's stupid. How can we then know if the information is correct or if it's some propaganda by the sponsors (maybe that's a stretch but you get the idea :p)
I don't think they want to do a Lies episode for a sponsored series because the sponsors probably won't pay for a lies episode.
Breezeshooter Yeah that makes sence actually
This is awesome! I had heard of Kamehameha before but all I was told was, "Kamehameha founded the island of Hawaii." I had no idea that he was such a gifted diplomat, strategist and general. Thanks, EC!
Indeed. A shame his kid basically screwed it up and allowed the missionaries in(who in turn would build plantations that grew and grew until they effectively ran the place, kicked out the monarchs, and signed up to join the US)
I just have to say love your guys work and really enjoy it for its interesting content you guys make
2:02
Nice reference to : "Sir, you are being hunted"
1:54
Sonic: *"Does ARE THE CHA-*
Goku: *"THE DRAGON BALLS"*

I'm writing this from an XP machine.
I never expected the history of Hawaii to be so interesting
I wonder what Kamehameha thinks of Windows 10...
Caz
He didn't live long enough to see it. And the answer, i think he would feel bad that hawaiian religion is long gone :/ rip da religion.
Kingdom of Hawaii ------------> Republic of Hawaii -----------------> US annexsation ------------------------> Becoming the 50th state of the USA
I am really glad to see more Hawaiian history and culture on mainstream Channels
I’m part Hawaiian and I’m glad I finally got a good summary of are history because I didn’t know most of it for awhile
XD I loved the Sir You Are Being Hunted reference @ 2:02
Only two vids? In school I loved studying Hawai'i history, Kamehameha and Liliʻuokalani. I could spend all day watching! Been a long time since I've seen any Island history. Thanks!
3:04 literally the funniest joke you done
they did windows dirty 💀💀
This series is really great and it was interesting to see how the first Hawaiian Ruler was, but now I really want to see you guys cover Captain Cook because of all the references to him
His story ends in hawaii as he was killed after he shot a Hawaiian man.
I just realized that Hawaiians are hardcore dragon ball fans
Part of it is these days there is a big Japanese population in Hawai'i so a lot of that stuff is more commonplace.
Other way round
Uplift Lettuce25 I searched for 4 minutes to find this reference, thanks
Uplift Lettuce25 dog I’ll slap the shit out of you calling us dragon ball fans THEY COPIED US YOU DUMB HAOLE shaddup dummeh
River Lopes brah calm down he was makin a joke😂
That XP vs Vista joke got me. You win.
8:42 reference to papers please a game they recommended perhaps not intentionally but cool detail
Yeah I mean, it's just a phrase, not everything is a reference.
They used a phrase
cmck how the fuck was that intentional. More people ask for documentation than people who have played the game.
PLEASE continue on Hawaii!!! I'd love to see you do from this all the way to statehood!
EVERYONE, AT 2:03 IT IS A REFERENCE TO, “SIR, YOU ARE BEING HUNTED” THIS IS AMAZING!!
It's kind of sad that we have to end this story on such a sad note since this guys did a lot.
Never knew until this video that Honolulu was on Oahu. Always thought it was on Hawaii
jedimasterpickle3 lol silly foreigner
I like the Windows reference
Man, I'm isn't a Patreon, but I need to say, this kind of video, is why you channel is good! Plz, still making unknowing history of greatness people!
Ps. Make Ethiopia Solomonic monarchy next :P (or just put this tema to be voted in Patreon site)
JAH BLESS!
Kamehameha invented licensing agreements
that kamehameha was a crazy pumpkin~
During first two series I found Extra history to be something weird in a gaming channel and to be honest even skipped those videos when they were first uploaded. Now I enjoy Extra history much, much, much more than the gaming part of this channel. Amazing work!!!!!!Simply Amazing!
Knock knock, it's the United States
They have boats, with guns
Gun boats ,
I swear, you guys do a better job than the history channel
Its been 6 months, please make another one
That Vista joke was so funny, I had to stop the video until I got over the giggles XD
Small village of Honolulu, lol.... We're an internationally recognized city now. And one of America's major cities. Not to mention, the biggest city in the pacific excluding southeast Asia.
yoshi lorak Ah, Auckland
Oh my gosh, love that obscure "Sir You Are Being Hunted" reference! :D
2:04, holy crap is that a 'Sir, You are Being Hunted" reference? I never thought I would see that game pop up anywhere ever again.
Is the story over, or are we gonna learn how Hawaii joined the usa?
Broockle Monarchs were too weak for the kingdom they ruled over, and stirrings of revolution get coopted by outside parties.
Where is spirit bomb: the great at???
Thank you, for sending to those letters, K.
great video, i think you should do a video on otto von bismarck, was he truly was quite inspirational (i think)
they are in fall
I love the use of computers that are good and bad in a demonstration / example
Spoiler alert: America wins.
Actually , in the end they lose... stay put!!!! The last to laugh... wins
jah Jah no, America wins in the end as well.
An entertaining and - mostly - accurate version of Hawaiian history!
Mahalo! 🤙🏼
Lesson Learned: Don't accept something people give you.
I NEED A MOVIE BASED ON THIS! Or even a series!
Stable system: Windows XP
I laughed so hard... I guess the coming US was... Windows Vista!
Hawaiis history is honestly interesting.
Its kinda funny how deeply rooted alot of American cultural aspects are., that we mirror so much in modern governments and beleifs.
Its wild how Kamehamehas policies mirrored exactly what the US promoted during its existence.
1:18 Hawaiian/Polynesian peoples couldn't go upwind until the 1790s?
Elizabeth Allen Some of them knew how to cut upwind, but the European sails were better at it.
funny fact! Kamehameha I, is the first king or head of state and hawaii is the first country in recognize Argentina as a free country. was an expedition with corso patent of the captain Antonio Bouchard in the ship "la argentina" by signing treaties between the captain and the king in 1818.
Uh-oh. Missionaries...
That is... almost never a good sign :s
"we don't want the Americans or British to confuse us and blow up our ships we need a flag"
*Literally copies both ensuring either side might make the mistake*
