It would be cool if you guys made a series about the Paraguayan War. It's a rarely talked about war that was one of the most destructive wars in history in terms of population loss for one of the involved countries. The lowest estimate places Paraguayan population loss at around 15%. The highest estimate says 60% of the population was killed. It lasted for almost 6 years, heavily changed the history of South America (as it destroyed Paraguay, was a massive factor in Argentina becoming a more centralized country and caused the chain of events which took down the Brazilian Empire and led to the military coup which started the Republic).
This is probably a result of the lack of information on Post-Roman Pre-Charlemagne Europe, and as many countries are much more closely tied to the Germanic kingdoms then the Sassanids or Parthians, the resurrection of the Persian Empires are often overlooked. We especially see this when History teachers often skim over the late empire and consequently about 7 centuries of history along with it. I also am very saddened by this, the period in which all of this transpired is a very interesting one filled with characters like Khosrau or even Justinian

We're thinking of different HMS Invincibles, aren't we? Anyway, it is great Royal Navy tradition to use adjectives as names for their ships, and the more hilariously grandiose those adjectives are, the better. HMS Invincible was a splendid name, but HMS Illustrious was probably the best they ever used.
Probably, I'm talking about the 1907 Battlecruiser sunk at the Battle of Jutland (though the 1765 and 1869 ships of the same name also sunk). I assume you're thinking of the carrier? And the names certainly sound great, but I feel like it's almost tempting fate to call your ship "invincible".

Zoroastrianism is a dualistic religion - Meaning we believe in 2 opposing forces, Ahura Mazda (yes like the car company) and Ahriman - a lord of wisdom and creation and a devil hell bent on destruction. If you ever attend a ceremony carried out by a Zoroastrian, you'll see us praying to a fire, but don't get it twisted, we aren't fire worshippers. Did he meet the Emperor Uriel Septim VII at the Fortress of Oblivion? - Also, the Fortress could have a been a great prison, I just think some loyalists set him free every time, and perhaps the royal family had always known secret ways out of there, you kinda learn that from being imprisoned every generation.
Even the fortress of oblivion could not stop Bismarck who always had a plan! It could also not stop Walpole from becoming the warden after he crashed the prison economy. The fortress always was no match for Yi's turtle ships. Then at the end even Bolivar could not create a lasting union between the prison gangs.
Fancy crowns were a hallmark of Sasanian kings (like so: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Bas_relief_nagsh-e-rostam_al.jpg ), and I'm really glad they're using that in this series. :D
Finally one where I haven't heard a lot about the guy before. It seems we mostly learn about Rome over Parthia and Sasania. It feels weird when you say Iranians instead of Persians.
Eh it's not like alot of politicos in Iran didn't mind letting others think Iran was just a continuation of everything Persian since Xerxes. They think that it gives the government an air of history and tradition. It is misleading information cause the governmental systems are not that old but pomp and circumstance have it's place.
Fafnd I'm sorry, I cannot understand your question? But I can say that the term of Persian empire is a western term which we are not using it when we are talking about our history, it is not political or related to the government. Also, you mentioned Xerexes, I don't know why you think the Iran's history is starting from Greco-Persian wars and why Iranian government shall emphasis that era, I need more explanation.
I'm super happy and excited to see you cover Persian history, and in the same period as your old series about Justinian. It's really cool to see a related story from opposite perspective! My dream topic for your series is Kościuszko, which would have Catherine the Great essentially play the role of a "big bad" villain in the narrative.
Blugale Doh Yeah, I don't want to dwell to much on it, as it's completely unrelated to Khosrau, but it would be an epic story, combining the birth of US and the destruction of Poland-Lithuania (and desperate last attempts at saving it, which accidentally helped revolutionary France).
A while back i suggested the Yemeni-Ethiopian conflict between the kingdoms of Himyar and Axum for a series. While I still hope for that someday, the Sassanians were actually involved in those wars during Khosrau's reign, so hopefully we should still see them :). In any case, I find this era of history in this part of the world fascinating so I am really glad about this series :D
You will indeed see them! They aren't the focus of the episode so it doesn't quite go in-depth about what was going on down there but they absolutely play an important part.
That was a weird one... To somebody who's not that familiar with Classical history, the idea that Persia and Ethiopia once went to war must seem very odd indeed; I know I was surprised when I first read about it...
Fortress of Oblivion? That's why you always need to be careful when handing out kick-ass names. The subject needs to be able to live up to it. I'm not going to name my kitten the "Beast of Obliteration", because I'd be setting the little guy up for failure...
The Persians were badasses at giving names to places they held their captives. Khosrau II for example, after being disgraced and forced to abdicate spent his final days in the (I'm not kidding) "Tower of Darkness" where he died.
Oblivion as in "forgetfulness", not "disappearance". A coarser translation would be "Fortress to which we send people we want to forget existed". They probably forgot about not just the prisoners but also general upkeep, and Kavadh was rich.
And I can't even find anything about it in the interwebbs, except that P'awstos Buzandac'i's "History of the Armenians" said that it also was called Andmeshn fortress.
Only becuase it's GO if your unlanded. I've seen banished courtiers come after me plenty of times. In fact my own brother just tried to take Ukraine from me with an army he gathered in India, the fucker.
I love this show, you never know what you're going to get and they introduce you to interesting aspects of history from around the world that you may never have known about unless you were taught it at school or had a specific interest in that type of history
I am interested and excited in this look at Iran's history, and of this new figure, in our world's history. That's what I love about this series, it covers everything, from the life of a brilliant, yet Ostracised Admiral, with Admiral Yi. To the preparation and execution of wartime events, like D-Day and Hunting the Bismarck Warship. Looking forward to this new series of videos, keep up the good work.
So awesome! I am currently writing my masters thesis on this very period of Roman-Persian religious relations! So I love seeing the awesome folks at EC have a go at it. Hope you get to the Anastasian war, som many interesting things happened!
More Middle East History!!! Yes! One topic I would love to have atleast one episode on would be the 1920 Syrian constitution and the government it tried to found. Others could be the Urabi Revolt, the 1906 Iranian Revolution, Black September ects.
"Wait, are you telling me you didn't just patch the giant hole in the wall that Khavad left the LAST time he escaped from the Fortress of Oblivion? What were you doing?" "We were gonna get around to it. It's just... well, you never really paid for the repairs." "And whose job was it to buy those materials?" "The Shah's."
That Fortress of Oblivion sounds like it's an old-time version of Arkham Asylum. Nasty place to send big-name prisoners. Hard to live in but easy to escape from.
I'm really looking forward to this. It's a setting I know nothing at all about and makes a welcome change from the oh so familiar bits of mainly European or American history. Yay Extra History!!!
A common misconception is that the Hephthalites probably looked alot more like the Sogdians than the Mongols (even though they’ve been known to have been at least semi-nomadic). So personally I think the Hephthalite design is abit off. Otherwise, great stuff!
Did not know any of this story 10 minutes ago and now I am super excited. Are we sure Game of Thrones wasn't based on this instead of medieval England?
Well to be fair, this king actually survives meanwhile everyone in Europe dies an early, usually gruesome, death so...probably still based on medieval times.
You know, this episode made me wonder something. How have we not had a Vlad the Impaler series yet? Surely a grizzle little story like his that birthed such a lurid icon of popular culture would be a fun series to do for the channel. :D
Well true, but I've found more people know of Dracular then Vlad the Impaler. So I think going behind the myth to bring out his history to the masses could be interesting for the channel. Plus it could make for a fun Halloween episode sometime.
Please do a series of a Byzantine Emperor named Heraclius who probably saved the Byzantine Empire from the brink of collapse during the early 7th century before his defeats against the Arabs. It would be great to create one especially that from being a victorius ruler at his youth to becoming a scapegoat to all Arab Conquests in the Levant and Egypt

*WITHOUT ANY MILK*
When the start of an extra history series doesn't even really talk about the person about it, you know you're in for a long one.
SaraBLQ Buckle up?
@Airmanon
Please keep your hands, arms, and legs inside the ride at all times, thank you.
This part of history is so new to me, I can't wait to see the rest of Khosrau's story!
You’ve seen part of it w/ Justinian series.
Artur M. That interesting.
I would love to see a series about Axum.
People need to start making films about Persian history more. So many stories and legends to be told.
Khosrau II for example, after being disgraced and forced to abdicate spent his final days in the (I'm not kidding) "Tower of Darkness" where he died.
marvelfannumber1+ It's almost like they were daring future Role Playing Game designers to make a story out of them.
Actually Beast Of Obliteration seems pretty suited,
Their cute and deadly, trust me, I have one napping right in my lap and kneading me
It's rare for me to follow a certain utube channel and then watch everything they ever made.
Thank u for the great effort and beautiful content😍🌹
I feel Dan's pain about the Fortress of Oblivion. How could a place with such an epic name be such a letdown as a prison for royalty?
Oblivion as in "forgetfulness", not "disappearance". A coarser translation would be "Fortress to which we send people we want to forget existed". They probably forgot about not just the prisoners but also general upkeep, and Kavadh was rich.
Actually it was a quite solid prison, one of the most powerful sassanid royals died in that prison.
And I can't even find anything about it in the interwebbs, except that P'awstos Buzandac'i's "History of the Armenians" said that it also was called Andmeshn fortress.
This sounds like a playthrough of CK2 ...
I dont know. I have never been deposed and they been able to rend my neighbours superior army to recapture the land I lost in CK2.
Only becuase it's GO if your unlanded. I've seen banished courtiers come after me plenty of times. In fact my own brother just tried to take Ukraine from me with an army he gathered in India, the fucker.
or maybe ck2 is based of of this.
@@tavasp Or this was based on CK2
You guys were the best part of TH-cam Rewind!
Way to damn them with faint praise. :/
Not a hard thing to accomplish this year.
I love this show, you never know what you're going to get and they introduce you to interesting aspects of history from around the world that you may never have known about unless you were taught it at school or had a specific interest in that type of history
TFW you spend more time in prison than on the throne (sorta) :(
I am interested and excited in this look at Iran's history, and of this new figure, in our world's history.
2 extra history series at once? Thank you Santa!!!!!!
So awesome! I am currently writing my masters thesis on this very period of Roman-Persian religious relations! So I love seeing the awesome folks at EC have a go at it. Hope you get to the Anastasian war, som many interesting things happened!
as an Iranian this was thoroughly enjoyable for me. thanks
More Middle East History!!! Yes!
One topic I would love to have atleast one episode on would be the 1920 Syrian constitution and the government it tried to found.
Others could be the Urabi Revolt, the 1906 Iranian Revolution, Black September ects.
Yeah man, and some Ancient Egypt
Love Persian history. Please make more. Specially about the Achaemenid and Safavid. Pleaseeeeee
"Wait, are you telling me you didn't just patch the giant hole in the wall that Khavad left the LAST time he escaped from the Fortress of Oblivion? What were you doing?"
"We were gonna get around to it. It's just... well, you never really paid for the repairs."
"And whose job was it to buy those materials?"
"The Shah's."
"KHAAAAAAAVAAAAAAD!"
That Fortress of Oblivion sounds like it's an old-time version of Arkham Asylum. Nasty place to send big-name prisoners. Hard to live in but easy to escape from.
oh snap! a whole episode to show the birth of our main character now you have my attention
Oh hell yeah, a new series
This is in my top 5 for extra history series.
Who could set up a place that sounds as cool as " *The Fortress of Oblivion* " That totally fails to contain people, wait a minute, WALPOLE!!!
This is like a side campaign to the main one of a strategy game. Awesome!
I'm really looking forward to this. It's a setting I know nothing at all about and makes a welcome change from the oh so familiar bits of mainly European or American history.
Yay Extra History!!!
Saw youtube rewind, was like "Wow this sucks" and then I saw you guys got a spot, best channel!
Brilliant storytelling
A common misconception is that the Hephthalites probably looked alot more like the Sogdians than the Mongols (even though they’ve been known to have been at least semi-nomadic). So personally I think the Hephthalite design is abit off. Otherwise, great stuff!
Sassanid history? Unusual an welcoming! And White huns are in it too! ❤
I like how there is a bit more expression than usual coming from the Dan's little Avatar.
It would make for good material for a one-off.
Then again, EH tends to go for the less well-known individuals.
Well true, but I've found more people know of Dracular then Vlad the Impaler. So I think going behind the myth to bring out his history to the masses could be interesting for the channel. Plus it could make for a fun Halloween episode sometime.
Your wish has be accepted, tho its been three years since :p
Is this the khosrou who trolled Justinian by bathing in the mediterranean?
Otto Niven yes, it's him.
WHY LET A LITTLE PEACE TREATY GET IN THE WAY OF A GOOD CRU- ERRR... BATH?

Thank you for videos about the great Shahanshah Kosrow Anushirawan.
It's my pleasure!
The fortress of oblivion sounds like a dark souls location
Tes 4 actually
Please do a series of a Byzantine Emperor named Heraclius who probably saved the Byzantine Empire from the brink of collapse during the early 7th century before his defeats against the Arabs. It would be great to create one especially that from being a victorius ruler at his youth to becoming a scapegoat to all Arab Conquests in the Levant and Egypt
they have done a series on Justinian The Great so i think its unlikly to happen in the near future. also there topic is chosen by there patreon supporters.
bluewardog well I hoping you can be the one who sponsored the episode, haha just kidding
That sounds like a D&D campaign setting, the Fortress Of Oblivion.
For all I know it is.
that third time almost killed me
To be fair, it *did* kill Kavadh's father!
@@extrahistory too soon

I dont know why but i love this extra history on Khosrau that i keep comming back ocationaly to both listen and just watch it (love the abckground images :) )
I saw you in TH-cam rewind!
Goodness, finally! My favorite Sasanian Empire! You've instantly improved my festive mood.
I share your disappointment in the Fortress of Oblivion. :(

Such a great, great name wasted. . .
Is that the same Khosrau from the Justinian series? If so,this ought to be a tad bit more fun than it seems. Keep up the good work boys at EH!
yes that's the one
I only see 1 problem with this video . . . i have to wait till next saturday to see the next one. i love the history videos, easily some of my favorite content on youtube hands down. keep up the good work.
Congrats on your part in TH-cam rewind even if it was short👍🏻
6:37 "Became a Masdek-kite" ...OH MY GOD. THAT PUN. XD
Between that and the FORTRESS OF OBLIVION being a very leaky prison, I had a blast listening this week. I wonder if they spend all the money on the scary name and some spikes on the walls, and not enough on the prison guards. :P
Yay more Extra History! Just rewatched the Mary Seacole videos and shed a tear. You guys do a great job!
i like the face of Kavadh's uncle when he got deposed
Crusader Kings 2 in a nutshell.
The game actually just got an achievement for playing the last of the White Huns and restoring the Hephthalite borders of their heyday.
Love your narration style. Keep up the good work. Peace, from Pakistan.
For anyone who knows Persian:
Kavad = قباد یکم
Fortress of Oblivion = قلعه فراموشی
You were not allowed to utter the names of those imprisoned within it according to wikipedia
Khosrau Anushiravan = خسرو انوشیروان دادگر
Hey there! I'm a big fan of your extra history show. I just wanted to tell you guys that I really love how you make history so funny and relatable. I'm always interested in learning things about the past and I think you guys do an awesome job at telling, not only your standard history class stuff (example: 1st WW) but also things that are often left out or even neglected (Mary Seacole, Hiawatha, Suleyman the Magnificent). I'm always super hyped everytime you upload a video and I'm super excited about this series in particular. Keep up the awesome work!
Much love from Switzerland ❤
Thank you so much! We love being able to bring so many different parts of history to light, and hopefully we hit a good mix of great stories about times you've heard of before and great stories about times that are new to you!
I'm so happy you're doing a series on Iranian histoty. I feel this topic is so very underexplored in western literature in general, and especially in my native tongue. Good job guys!
Oooo.... A new story I haven't heard before...... go on
Saw you were in TH-cam rewind! Congratulations.
