Sorry to ruin the joke, but I literally took a Hawaiian History course last semester. It didn't really come up as a theme. The theme, "a god decided this should happen," did come up however.
I'm from Hawai'i and I can confirm that in both history and mythology, volcanoes and eruptions are a common occurrence. The fire goddess Pele is so pervasive that even today locals respect her domain of Kilauea.
_Mana: Spiritual life force. It seems the term itself is now used in gaming, alongside Stamina._ _And since Kamehameha is of power, no wonder the world used it as a catchphrase..._
@@NotEnoughSwvy Indeed and so what? Not everyone watched Dragon Ball but they sure know Mana is almost always a second Bar like the Health Bar in most RPG games.

@@arktrooper8223 i mean an anime OBSESSION is bad, but so is any other obsession. This person didn't have to make the Kamehameha because other people made the joke. Unessecary, Yes. Weebish, not really.
we all know why this episode is being made (to tell the history of a rarely talked about people of course!) but I'm less shocked about the DBZ obligatory reference and more shocked about the origin of the word "Mana"
that's not the origin of the word "mana", singular. Mana was a word used by Jews before Christ in one example. i think there are even older uses of the word than that.
The word mana occurs in a variety of languages. I'm honestly not sure which one went on to influence the current usage of the word, you can make a pretty good case for most of them. I'm pretty partial to the Hawaiian origin myself though lol
"Mana" as used in this video is Polynesian. the Jewish word you're referring to is "Manna" and referes to god given food, no a type of spiritual power.
The Jew thing is manna. This is Mana. There's a difference that's a lot bigger than a single N. Especially because the video game version is a lot closer to Mana than manna.
The volcanic eruption seemed a bit too convenient so I did some research. Apparently yes, there was a "unusually explosive eruption" that occured in 1790. Not only is the ash layer still very much present, but there are footprints in it, some dating from around that period (based on radiocarbon dating). It was once believed that the footprints were from surviving warriors, though a survey in 2008 concluded that most of the footprints were from either women or children. Also the rebellious army was apparently on or very near the summit when the eruption happened. That's one rather unique way to loose an army, having the mountain you are walking across erupt under your feet.
Strange though why would someone tell the the tale of failure and loss and then make up with a volcano eruption? Its not like he had "Secret Troops" or something like that
If you're going to attempt to correct someone, you should do your homework first. The volcanic ash itself wasn't what was tested, but rather organic material that was trapped by the ash and turned to charcoal.
+AdalRoderick Very true. There are so many examples in history where small quirks of situation or order of events have huge consequences. On the other hand many such quirks happen all the time and have no effect on history, so a law of large numbers alone dictates that sometimes a "convenient" occurence will have some major effect +Toney Smith well the person answering you and your reply to them appear both to have been removed, as I just saw the notifications for a message but nothing here. Strange. Either way, my understanding is that yes radiometric is the general term for dating a substance based on nuclear impurities, of which radiocarbon is one form. I believe radiocarbon dating was used as it was not the ash itself that was dated but various organic material buried within the layers of ash. This particular volcano has apparently had many eruptions over the years and hence layers of different age.
G-emperor Flame akira toriyama actually tried a number of poses when he was alone in order to decide the best pose for the Kamehameha. Weeb Lord Blood makes you Hawaiian being born in Hawaii makes you a local. It’s like being born in America your an American, but it doesn’t make you an Indian (Native American).
I love how you got the little detail right on the old Maui King (Kahekili) who was tattooed on the entire half of his body after the Hawaiian thunder god
Hunter Of Legendary Memes I dont think thats true, Kamehameha probly doesnt have a meaning in japanese, let alone one that means “turtle destruction wave.” I think thats just an alternate name for the attack that he made up
still cant believe it XD Akira Toriyama actually tried a number of poses when he was alone in order to decide the best pose for the Kamehameha. After much contemplation, he could not decide on a name for his "Kame" attack, so he asked his wife (Nachi Mikami), who came up with the name.[13] She told Akira that it would be easy to remember the name of the attack if he used the name of the cultural Hawaiian king named Kamehameha (lit. "the very lonely one" or "the one set apart" in Hawaiian language).
Than goku the son of kamehameha gained the mana of his father, turning it into ki. He knew it was time, time to shout to the entire anime/manga world. He took a deep breathe, cupping his hands and pulling them back.Blue. Blue filled the space between his cupped hands, growing ever so larger with each second. Then, he shouted "kame...hame...h(see you in the next episode)":/
In Civilization Term: - Kamahameha cheated himself to the weapon of the Renaisance while his opponents are still in the classic era. - Kamahamahe took great losess but used faith-resources to "build" primitve military units. Then he upgraded them with Gold into rifleman. - It was not a vulcano that killed his rivals army. It was his Ally Gandhi. Ganhi dropped some Nukes on them. How did Gandhi get some Nukes in the middle age? Kamahameha is playing on diffulculty Level: Deity (=impossible).
This will probably get lost in the comments, but I'm here to tell a cool story about the king that relates to my family. Long ago one of my ancestors went on a Mormon mission (when the Mormon church first began) to Hawaii to preach "the truth" and whatnot. He came across the descendants of king K and taught them "the truth" and as a gift for sealing their family "forever" they gave him the staff used by kamehameha to my great great... grandfather and it was passed down to my great grandfather who donated it (along with the journals of my ancestor who got it) to (I think, don't quote me on this) the BYU Hawaii campus to be on display for all to see. Which means I've touched the hands of someone who has touched the staff. TL;DR: great something grandpa got kamehamehas staff as a gift for giving the family Mormonism and my great grandpa donated it to BYU (I think)
I have actually been to Maui several times, and have visited Iao Valley (the unnamed valley in this episode) It is a beautiful place that sadly is now mostly off limits due to major storm damage of the area since September 2016, with major cultural artifacts now lost.
Naman Hegde Actually, he did name it after the king. Yes, kame means turtle in Japanese, but Toriyama couldn't think of anything catchy to name the move that had 'kame' in it. So he asked his wife and told him about King Kamehameha. He talked about it in an interview waaay back when.
Considering the extent of my knowledge of Kamehameha is that he was a Hawaiian king who had a Dragon Ball move named after him, I am very glad to see this as a new series.
Watcher Zero It was his uncle, not father. I think he secretly wanted the prophecy fullfilled but at the same time could not dishonor his eldest son, heir to the kingdom. Hawaiians were religious and honored their gods. Its possible he wanted honored both and chose to let fate decide.
Yeah, he likely did it on purpose. There was precedent where the same thing happened with the legendary king Umialiloa centuries before, which Kalaniʻōpuʻu would have known well. Kamehameha was highly regarded by Kalaniʻōpuʻu, probably moreso than Kīwalaʻō, his son, who accounts show as being a bit of a detached and weak ruler.
So, for the sake of having a sense of scale, how many warriors were generally involved in these battles? My euro-centric, uninformed arse thinks of the 18th century Polynesian islands as small and sparsely populated, so I'm imagining the battles as twenty guys with spears being cross with each other.
The estimates have been around 10,000 men on some of the larger invasion forces including his failed 1804 attempt to conquer Kauai where he mustered over 1000 war canoes. Hawaii had a population of 800,000 or 500,000 during this period. Most Polynesian islands are still recovering from the effects of Western diseases even in Hawaii outside of the metropolis of Honolulu, you don't see people living by subsistence in the more remote valleys and farm or ranch lands which once supported large settlements.
In the largest single battle in Hawaiian history (which Kamehameha participated in and won), nearly 5% of the entire population of the Hawaiian islands fought each other. To put that into perspective, a similar battle scaled to the population of the modern US would involve anywhere between 10 and 15 million people fighting in a single location.
if you ever go to Hawaii, even though on a map it seems small, its actually quite a large landmass. If it had been put in closer proximity to other lands, it mightve had a good chance of becoming a pacific empire
King Kamehameha brought the Hawaiian Islands from a dozen warring territories to a unified and global kingdom.

+Droop Hoop Videos, You autocorrected and mean Polynesian (into Polygon), or was it a pun calling him a computer game character>
Gerald Grenier | Thy was a pun.
P-BOT H20 no no kamehameha was the super saiyan that invented the blue blast of energy and that move was named after him
I love how you got the little detail right on the old Maui King (Kahekili) who was tattooed on the entire half of his body after the Hawaiian thunder god
Is that why Akira toriyama named the legendary attack after him?(Dragon ball)
No, Kamehameha means "Turtle Destruction Wave" in Japanese
yes..his wife told him about king kamehameha
turtle...destruction wave????
Yes
Hunter Of Legendary Memes I dont think thats true, Kamehameha probly doesnt have a meaning in japanese, let alone one that means “turtle destruction wave.” I think thats just an alternate name for the attack that he made up
Seven feet tall, charismatic, smart... so apparently Kamehameha was Dwayne Johnson?
Kamehameha was actually about 6'7" which is still tall af.
😂😭😭😭
@@f.meacham100 his Cape was almost 7 feet long and Hawaiian chiefs never let there Cape toufh the ground so he surely was around 7 feet
Still waiting on that Otto von Bismarck series.....
It's coming in the fall...
it's finished now. Have fun watching it!
Bismarck always has a plan...
still cant believe it XD
Akira Toriyama actually tried a number of poses when he was alone in order to decide the best pose for the Kamehameha.
I was waiting for Roshi to show up
The king of forward settling
Thx for making this video no one talks about Hawaii enough
Isn't it funny how pirates spend their entire lives hunting treasure, but the actual treasure is the times they spend together

Nothing brings people together like scurvy.

Obligatory Dragonball joke.
Looks at the name of this story's protagonist. Nope, doesn't sound like an iconic move from dragonball at all
*insert JoJo meme*
the dragonball move was named for this great King.
It actually was?
Yep.
Kamehameha the Great, the only Hawaiyan king able to transform himself into a Super Saiyajin...
Take a shot everytime you hear "Kamehameha"

Than goku the son of kamehameha gained the mana of his father, turning it into ki. He knew it was time, time to shout to the entire anime/manga world. He took a deep breathe, cupping his hands and pulling them back.Blue. Blue filled the space between his cupped hands, growing ever so larger with each second. Then, he shouted "kame...hame...h(see you in the next episode)":/
Extra credits talking about some of the history of my home state? HELL YEAH!!

In Civilization Term:
- Kamahameha cheated himself to the weapon of the Renaisance while his opponents are still in the classic era.
Berek71182 deity just means the ai isn’t a dead rotting horse but a horse without any limbs
It's crazy how many anime take influence from history from all over the world
And an entire genre (fantasy adventure) with mana
Kamehameha would have had me at "I'll give you wives."

Lol who named dis guy turtle devastation wave?
Naman Hegde Actually, he did name it after the king. Yes, kame means turtle in Japanese, but Toriyama couldn't think of anything catchy to name the move that had 'kame' in it. So he asked his wife and told him about King Kamehameha. He talked about it in an interview waaay back when.
This might shock you, but the native Hawaiians didn't speak Japanese.
so thats how kamehameha was made
Goku:Kamehameha!!!!!!!!!
I guess his mana level was OVER NINE THOUSAND!
5:49 AND SO THE BALANCE SHIFTS!
SO, the DBZ's signature attack comes from a great guy? KAMEHAME-HALLEJUAH!
Hahahah lol
Love my culture and home
Awesome! I've heard the name Kamehameha when I've gone to Hawaii on vacation but never took the time to learn anything about him.
It’s great that you guys covered this, I’m tired of 4 years in Hawaiian history being practically useless here on the mainland
Considering the extent of my knowledge of Kamehameha is that he was a Hawaiian king who had a Dragon Ball move named after him, I am very glad to see this as a new series.
Mana = Ki
TH-cam: ah yes, 2019, a few years after it was released? RECOMMEMDED
*Insert obligatory Dragon Ball Z reference here*

Hawai'i finally gets more attention. I happen to live there, so hooray!
Your probably haole
doggo 808 you must go to pchs
I’m soooo ready for this new series! Majapit was so interesting so I’m glad to find this!
Kamehemeha's father had obviously not read Lear, splitting up the kingdom between his family.
Or just looked at history in general.

So, for the sake of having a sense of scale, how many warriors were generally involved in these battles? My euro-centric, uninformed arse thinks of the 18th century Polynesian islands as small and sparsely populated, so I'm imagining the battles as twenty guys with spears being cross with each other.
Koen Kamphorst This comment needs to be higher up. I would love the answer to this.
Hey, thanks, that's real cool to know.
