  • 📜 History of D-Day, The Great Crusade, Part 1
    D-Day: June 6, 1944, the day when Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy to retake France from the Germans. They hoped to take the Germans by surprise, and their decision to brave rough weather to make their landings certainly accomplished that, but despite these small advantages, the American forces at Utah and Omaha Beach had to overcome monumental challenges to establish a successful beachhead.

      Teddy Roosevelt jr! Better put some respect on his name! His father was one of if not the most badass presidents in history. He literally hunted down some pirates/thieves, all on his own, who stole his boat and captured them. He also stormed the beaches of Cuba on horseback and won against Spain. I could go on for days but there’s a bunch of great videos of him on here look him up.

    Hey I know that plane! My great grandfather was on the pathfinder plane that overshot its target. He ended up wandering around the wrong part of France for a while and got injured by a grenade in a fire fight with some retreating Germans. They took him to building that was being used a field hospital, but the building got hit by allied artillery. He accidentally got shelled by his own side!
    He only survived because he and the other allied prisoners were being kept in the basement. eventually he was found by troops who had landed on the beaches a few days earlier and got sent home. He learned how to drive a tractor with a few less fingers and only died a few years ago in his mid 80's.

      Little known fact: In order to disguise it from German bombers, the British demolished all the buildings in London and flooded the entire metropolitan area in 1942. This secret was so well kept that it wasn't until 1998 that the government revealed that the "London" everyone knew and loved was actually a decoy constructed during the Cold War out of papier mache and lollypop sticks.

      My great grandfather died in Stalingrad, he was a German soldier, so I´d like to ask you what separates him from the soldiers who fought for the allies? Just be aware of the fact that in Nazi Germany you didn´t exactly have the choice not to join the military, a lot of people died on both sides, but rarely do I hear people say that the German casualties should be remembered. Keep in mind, not everyone who wore a German uniform had to be a Nazi, just because you were forced to fight for the wrong side doesn´t mean you deserved to die. There is nothing honorable about war, and while I do know why WW 2 had to end that way and that Hitler and his government had to be put down no matter the cost I think people should take a moment and remember all the young men who were forced to die for something the did not even believe in.

    • @richardshort3914
      @richardshort3914 6 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      No, they got it right.
      Canada used either the Union Jack or the flag you see depicted for both World Wars.
      Commonly called an 'ensign,' it featured the Union Jack in the upper quadrant, a crimson field and the Canadian crest with three green maple leaves at its base.
      In 1958 the flag changed to red leaves and was known as, 'the Red Ensign'.
      In 1963, the government of the day sought a uniquely Canadian design and adopted 'the Maple Leaf,' a stylized large single maple leaf on a white field with red bars (denoting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans) on either side.
      Incidentally, there are 'battle pendants' for all the armed services, but they are followed most closely by the Royal Canadian Navy. Traditionally, if a vessel struck its colours, it was an indication it was surrendering; a nautical version of 'throwing in the towel'. In the event the ship's flag is shot away, naval vessels fly up to three flags, including the battle pendant during engagements.

    • @brendans5195
      @brendans5195 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I’ve been slowly making my way through all of Extra History, and I think it’s safe to say you guys are my favorite new “edutainment” series on TH-cam. Fun, fast-paced, and fact-filled, there is seriously nothing better than enjoying some dinner with one series of Extra History. Travel is made SO much more fun if I have downloaded a few series onto my phone; the hours on airplanes seem to drift away. I guess what I’m trying to say is: thank you for all your hard work. I will watch this channel until I’m not able to anymore.
    Much love,
    A viewer

    Showing Pegasus Bridge in the episode about US actions on D-Day? Oh man, you are going to hear it from the UK folks for that one! Pegasus Bridge was captured by British forces (specifically the Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry). The bridge was renamed to "Pegasus" in honor of the shoulder emblem worn by British Airborne.

      I am talking about the bridge at 6:42. Counter-weight at one end, gate on the other to stop traffic while the bridge is raised. It is not drawn with the semi-circular track on the sides, but otherwise it is pretty much spot-on.

    • @sean668
      @sean668 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's literally just a bridge.

    • @IndianaJonny
      @IndianaJonny 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed; given that it's widely held that the action at Pegasus bridge saw the first Allied casualties and 'liberation' of French civilians during the D-Day operation, the inference that it seized by US forces was... deeply uncomfortable. The church at Sainte-Mère-Église would have been a more suitable iconic landmark to use.
      On a separate note, the 101st and 505th seems an odd pairing to use given that the 101st is a full-blown division whereas the 505th is a regiment within the 82nd. Pairing the 101st and 82nd would have made more sense, I feel. (Admittedly this may be bias on my part as the 82nd never seem to be shown as much love as their flashy cousin).

      Yes, there's a map of Normandy in the video. The Canadian beach, Juno, is between the two British beaches (Sword and Gold) on the eastern flank.
      Canadian troops at Juno made it further inland than troops from any of the other beaches in the first day of the invasion. And we had the highest percentage of casualties to prove it. This feat is sometimes erroneously attributed to British troops. ( *Please note:* I said _percentage,_ not _number._ )
      One of the wounded D-Day casualties was British Columbia native James Doohan, who played Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott (Scotty) on the original _Star Trek_ television series and several off-shoot movies.
      Incidentally, 'Montgomery' was Doohan's actual middle name.

      um the US used funny tanks on Omaha Beach with DD tanks that were apart of the "funny tank" program. Omaha was not hard because they did not have "funny tanks" it was hard because the Beach was over hung by a massive bluff that allowed the Germans high ground and only allowed a few ponits of entry. That and the bombardment was less effective there.
      Funny tanks were not "mobile infantry with one purpose" They were engineering tanks mostly or other novel concepts but they were not meant for infantry
      US did not care about wasting resources
      don't spread miss-information.
      As for Utah Beach the US 4th Infantry Division landed there and they had really hard fighting for the rest of the war.
