    Joe, I'm 62 and have a Unicorn that I've restored and then sailed over several years but not competitively. My wife bought be a 'Bucket List' book recently and gave me a voucher to drive a Lambo on an old airfield in Scotland as my 1st entry in the book. I watched this video of yours a month ago and absolutely loved it. Towards the end I thought your leeward bow was going to dive but you kept her up. Being a single handed sailor of a cat with only a mainsail, I'd love to experience flying the kite on the Tornado with you before I get too old. Your cool calm instruction is so reassuring and doesn't put your passengers under too much pressure. If it's OK with you, I'm going to put 'Flying the Kite on a Tornado with Joe at Wildwind' as No2 on my Bucket List!!

      Hi Alistair, I would be honoured to be number 2 (i'd be keen for a bit of supercar myself!)
      When you get here, we'll get the tornado out!
      Cheers

    I used to have a Tornado. I was able to sell mine at a profit and then purchase a Nacra 6.0 but that was a bit over powering for me so I got a Nacra 5.8. The shape of the bow of the Tornado didn't have enough positive buoyancy and liked to dig in. I found it uncomfortable hiking out behind the rudder on many occasions so I ended up getting a Nacra. I only raced it once in San Diego in an Olympic qualifying regatta. We got four first places and one second place. I was 18 or 19 years old at the time and there were about 100 boats on the starting line. That was back in the late 1980's. Fun time for sure.

      @JoyriderTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's amazing to win an olympic qualifier event. A shame that you sold the Tornado. It's a different game of course since it's all twin trapeze now.

      @@JoyriderTV I learned how to race and sail better in a junior racing program at a local yacht club. 99% of the time, I was first off the starting line and that was mostly due to my stop watch and great teachers that taught me well. Plus, I loved it! Those were some of the best memories I've had in my life. I didn't have the money to campaign for the Olympics. You needed two boats and have enough money to travel to all the worlds events. It's expensive for sure. There were two trapeze, one for skipper and one for crew but no spinnaker. The Nacra 6.0 was the first boat with a spinnaker but it wasn't defined. Anything went in terms of shape and size. It was all experimental back then with no rules to have one or not but all the 6.0's had them and that's why I wanted that boat. Everyone was shocked at my win and no one knew me. I beat the worlds best by far and away. It was one of the highlights of my racing career for sure. The second place was due to my crew that tacked to early for the weather lay line so we had to tack two more times to round the weather mark. I let him skipper one race. He was much older than me and a very accomplished sailor. I thought I could enter the race and single hand it but you had to have a crew so I asked around and someone stepped up for the challenge.

    Sure brings back fond memories --- however in the 70's we did not have the big reacher... Just a slightly smaller Main and only one on the trapeze. We won the bronze medal in the 1975 World Championships held in Copenhagen. Bruce Badeau and Douglas Cummings. NOCE VIDEO -- FANTASTIC WATER.

    That was absolutely awesome Joe!! "Just sheet out ... and then we're gonna go!" I found my self with an eye on the leeward bow all the time because i was expecting you to pitchpole! ;)

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Right on! A good technique to steady the boat is to oversheet the kite, when it's eased enough the boat takes off. Great fun.

  • @brucebadeau9906
    @brucebadeau9906 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think we exceeded your impressive the speed in 1973 -- Travemunde Germany Worlds --- I was about 200 lbs and was trapezing off the rear beam when a 50mph line squall hit --- we almost launched into the air --- and all was well for about 5 minutes... then a 10 cent rudder retention clip exploded and the windward rudder lifter off the Pintals -- it was over for us as the rudder lifter off and we rounded up immediately.

    Back when I had a Tornado I went out with a friend who was an at the mooring kind of sailor. He had the helm and we started to really heel. I looked back and he had cleated off the main and let the sheet go. The only reason we didn't turtle was through the grace of God.
