⛵️Instagram / totaljoyrider SO MUCH WIND THAT EVERY TIME YOU TRY TO SAIL DOWNWIND YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING TO PITCHPOLE, NOSEDIVE OR CAPSIZE.
Try one of these methods to get downwind.
These can be especially useful when having to sail back to the beach in a strong onshore wind. These should work on any beach catamaran, hobiecat, hobie 16 or twin hull sailboat.

Boy, what you do for our education and entertainment! Thanks Joe
It's my pleasure!!
I've always done pretty good by sheeting both sails in tight and steering the keep the stern dead into the wind. Have to be careful about sudden accidental jibes but with the sails in tight you don't get slammed over.
Yes, that is a good method to get the boat slowed down on the downwind - not my favourite though, as it can go wrong if you get too deep.
One of the coolest video ever
thanks very much, I'm glad that it hits the spot.
Love your videos Joe, I've just bought an old Dart 18 as my first cat after 40 years of mono hull dinghies, so really appreciate your teaching along with a great sense of humour, Thanks
That is awesome! I'm very glad to have been able to help.
As a single hander on a unirig Dart 15 I could use option #3 to launch from the beach with strong offshore wind as starting downwind I always have the prospect of seeing the boat sailing away without me. I have to try the method in open waters as our beach is often crowded and see how maneuverable the boat is steering with the main.
Nice. Good choice.
Nice handy sailing there guys! Much fun watching!
Pitch pole is my greatest fear next to COB (Captain overboard) when I sail my F28 catamaran with my girlfriend in strong winds. We do try to avoid such winds, and I'm "always" one reef ahead of the conditions.
Yet, after four decades of sailing cats, wind continues to surprise me in how fast it can change. 😀
I can imagine that on an F28 either a MOB or pitchpole would be quite a disaster!
I once lowered the main in 35 gusting upwards. We rolled it as came down, taking the mainsheet out. Was worried we would snap the mast without the main acting as a backstay. So attached a trapeze to the corner casting. Lashed the main to the foot straps. Worked well.
maybe could of used the halyard on the boom attached to where to mainsail clew attaches, then sheeting in the mainsheet to get backstay tension to the top of the mast? I recently did this to keep my boom from knocking about while trailering mast up to a launch ramp.
I'll talk about this in the Q+A - I think it's an interesting point.
Thanks a lot guys
It was a lot of fun to make this one!!
This is very good!
Thanks!
Very Nice from Portugal 😀😀😀
Thanks!!
Very cool video!
Thank you very much!
well entertained!
Thanks!!!
Great great video, tks
Glad you enjoyed it
Flipped like a cheese omelet.
Probably some onion and ham in there!
Joe in full neoprene, Sam in shorts.
Age teaches you that being cold isn't fun. Being young teaches you that being cool is more important!!

Great video, and great techniques. Joe, have you ever sailed with a Supercat 17? Here in Brazil, we have a considerable fleet of this boat, all from the 80s and 90s. Guys had a deal with Bill Roberts and produced the boat here. I'm a new owner of one of these missiles :))) Would be really nice if someday you could talk a little bit about this fantastic boat.
I never sailed the Supercat 17, I would love to try.
Maybe i need to come to Brazil when i'm on the world tour!!!
Where are you sailing in Brazil?
@@yoootooob100 Florianópolis,SC.
@@JoyriderTV Sure you need! Let me know and I can help you by contacting the fleets in the nice spots along the coast you want to make a big tour. I live in Florianópolis, an island in the south of Brazil. We have a growing fleet of cats here. North Bay of the island is one of the top best sailing sports in the country. The best sailing season here in the south is between nov-april. I'lll send a mail with my contacts.
What went wrong with the main sail? What's it because of the downhul too released it comes out of the mast rail?
Yes. For strategy number 2 (2:38) they completely release the downhul to get any pressure off the main sail and go down wind, however, they forgot to set it back after.
Actually, I rewatched the video, and at 7:47 the main sail is already ripped and the boom was still attached to the mast, so idk what went wrong
I also saw the torn main sail. Joe, what exactly went wrong? How can we learn from this? Yeah, it seems to be the downhaul, which let the slider to detach from the mast
The tack eye pulled out when Sam pulled the downhaul back on after the ferry gliding.
I assume it was a manufacturing defect.
But having the slider out of the mast put more strain on that area as well.
Wow, what caused that tear on the tack of the mainsail?
The tack eye pulled out when Sam pulled the downhaul back on after the ferry gliding.
I assume it was a manufacturing defect.
and i think when the slider popped out of the mast that didn't help.
🔝
Boom!
A tick in both boxes from me.
Great!! Nailed it!
