I think this review misses some of the fun in this game. My experience so far has given me the immersive sim goodness that i have come to expect, like climbing onto roofs and throwing a rope down the chimney of a shop a that has item available for purchase during the day that you don't want to pay for at night. This allowed me to get blue tier weapons within the first town of the first character. Playing unconventionally is the name of the game here, side quests are worth seeking out and often have good rewards and interesting ways to solve them, I like to pick at every inch these games give me and i definitely think this game majorly succeeds where death loop failed.

For me, I am enjoying the streamlined nature of this game. I picked up Wasteland 3 way back based on Skill Up’s review and I totally recognize that game’s quality. I had a lot of fun with it but unfortunately it got too expansive for my interests. It became difficult to leave and come back to the game so I eventually fell off.
Here, I like that I have a spread of options to play with but those options aren’t as horizontally deep. That way I’m able to play in smaller spurts and then pick the game right back up.

    "Weird West" is a long-established pen-and-paper setting.
This is kinda like a video game just being named "Dungeons and Dragons".
You wouldn't slowly introduce players to what an orc or a walking skeleton is in a DnD/"Forgotten Realms"-based game, despite them not being part of the name.
Why should Weird West slowly introduce a siren or any other kind of otherworldly being, when the game's title says exactly what it is about and what it contains?
Furthermore, the self-contained stories found in quests and the recountings of choices are very indicative of the "Weird West" system, which very much favors such brief stories.
If anything, the devs managed to capture what "Weird West" is at its core. How well that translates into making a video game is a completely different story, though.

I don't really understand how 20 hours of gameplay is bad, when in reality you can get more hours out of this game than say "The Ascent". Odd that you praised that game and it has less rpg mechanics. Not hating, I absolutely loved the ascent, but I do feel when it comes to the rpg elements it falls way short compared to weird west.
I got this on game pass and I am honestly having so much fun playing the game. It really is a breath of fresh air.
This game is more of a rpg than say the witcher 3. Your choices have consequences. You steal, kill, or act like an ass and your reputation will go down. You can kill anybody in the game, even main characters.
I remember when I started my second character, I went back to the town grackle and one of the guys that I had in my posse was in a gunfight with an outlaw and he was killed. I killed that outlaw and ate them. I then looted all the gear from him that I had given him in the last journey.
Personally I highly recommend this game especially if you have game pass. If not, the price isn't too bad, but waiting for a sale might be your best bet.

This is the craziest comment thread ive ever seen you guys are ridiculous. Your desire is that games have small inventories, while also retaining the possibility of finding health potions “everywhere”, so that you’ll have more incentive to _use_ health potions?
What? Whether you have a small inventory or not, you’re gonna be _able_ to heal whenever you want in any game that has a ton of health potions laying around everywhere. Small inventories are just onnoxious, UNLESS the point of it is to creat tension and _more_ emphasis on item management and having to choose when to use something or save it for a rainy day. Not just to make a game easier like what haha 😂 and this guy, you want games to tell you what loot is in every room you’re about to go in? Nobody's talking about making games easier, or giving players more items, but making STOCKPILING impossible to encourage you to use up your resources. I have no idea where this "finding potions everywhere" quote comes from? I don't see it anywhere in this thread. This "stockpiling prevention" was the exact reason Doom Eternal gave player really small max ammo count. They overdid it for my taste, but it shows that it's not some crazy idea but a popular notion. The same philosophy was what made the first Halo so great - it was really hard to find ammo replacement (alien weapons were litelary impossible to reload) so you had to constantly change weapons instead on stockpiling ammo for your favorites.

I happened to stumble across this game, which I've never heard of on Xbox Game Pass one night. I looked at the clock, realizing the time I knew it was time for bed for work the next day. Though, I went against my better judgement and stayed awake longer then I should have just to see if this game was something to keep installed or immediately delete after playing it and possibly not liking it.
With that, I booted the game up and was pleasantly surprised. I played for a few days, playing the Bounty Hunter. She was so fun to explore the game with. Thoroughly, I enjoyed my time. Then, the game continued... I was playing as a Pigman. I don't know what it was, but this is when the game lost all appeal for me. Not because Pigman bad, no. Because I noticed I had to sit through five chapters/characters in the same world and such with the same weaponry. Something about it seemed to be a sludge.
All in all, a pretty decent game. Especially with it's low(er) price point, it is a good pick up if you're looking for something different or bored.

  • @Genome85

Nerdy correction - the game isn't isometric. In parallel projection (encompassing isometric), something far away from the camera would be the same size on the screen as something closer. Think of Diablo 2, where an enemy at the top of the screen is exactly the same size as on the bottom, even though the bottom is "closer" to the camera. In perspective projection (i.e. how our eyes work), far objects appear smaller than close objects. Imagine drawing your eye's FOV -- isometric would be a cylinder going out from your eyeball (all parallel lines), while perspective would be cone-shaped. In the gameplay footage, things that are farther are smaller, so it's perspective, not isometric. You can have a top-down camera position with either style.

I disagree (politely), Just finished the game and I can recommend it. Its great, imo a solid 8/10. Everyone has their own opinions but having expectations going into a game generally wont do you any good. Whatever game it might be.
Its probably the best indie/smaller game Ive played. However its buggy :/ Likely u will get bugged out at least a few times and will have to load a previous save.

Is anyone else getting pretty bored of these “decision making” games when every time it always ends up with the same 2 choices, good or bad. In real life we often live in the grey and I would love to see a game actually be unique and offer real decisions that dont always end up in a good/bad scenario.

    • @J-Dizzle95
      @J-Dizzle95 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The thing that I feel is tough about that is the fact that even if there is no “good” or “bad” endings, there still usually is a “preferred” or “best” outcome. That’s what drives me crazy with games like that is I feel like there is always an optimal path. And if you make all of the different choices similar in outcome instead, then what’s the point? I feel like it has to be a very tough thing to do to be able to create a game like you are describing that has meaningful decisions and yet still plays out organically. That’s just my guess though
      Edit: typos

    • @RobsRemixes
      @RobsRemixes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@J-Dizzle95 Exactly, but for me it’s once you decide on your very first choice, the rest are almost entirely irrelevant. I would hazard a guess and say 90%+ of players who make the first choice as a “good” choice will make every single other choice as good so therefor there really isn’t any decision making to be had at all, the same goes for “bad” choices. Like you said there is also an optimal ending so It all begins feeling like an illusion that these games use to pretend like you have some control on events when it’s all scripted to go a certain direction anyway.

I've never been board once with the game play, I like the fact that you can literally play everything the way you want.. And I rarely fight the same way twice in a row..
The fact that every aspect of your actions is accounted for, every choice makes a ripple.. And oh man.. Ive had things blow up spectacularly in my face haha
I also think your kinda missing the point of the 5 characters.. Well ermm kinda??
You literally are pushing each characters "soul or being" to the side and taking over their bodies lol.. Hence the moniker of "the Traveler"

The ascent doesn't suffer from a constant identity crisis like this does. The ascent knows its a twin stick shooter with Diablo like loot systems and it commits to it. This game thinks its an immersive sim but doesn't commit to it. From the action heaviness, the choice system, gear system, play style options, etc. It just doesn't commit to the core fundamentals of an immersive sim.
Game has potential but its need of a lot more work before it can be considered good.

I love these top down games perspective. I grew up loving the old Fallout games, Ascent, Wasteland and I played a card game called Doomtown when I was younger which is basically Weird West, how could I not like this game? Game can be a little clunky at first but once you get a handle on the controls it can be quite fun.
I focused my character on Dynamite, Sneaking faster and increased Sneak damage. I think the only issue I have with the game is no friendly fire option, I had to reload a couple times because I killed my posse LOL I didn't mind the enemies always wanting to get close just made my shotgun happy :P

Love listening to your reviews Skill Up! I know my own tastes well enough to know when I'm going to like a game even when it gets a bad review, this being one of them.
I'm having a blast so far. My biggest disappointment was the fact that all characters can use the same abilities/weapons, but I just decided to limit my weapons to fit the character I was using. Rifle and Handgun for the bounty hunter, shotguns and melee for the pig. I'm on the Protector now and the bow has probably become my favorite weapon so far.
Not gonna lie, the first story is by far the worst. I've been enjoying every other story more and more. Really it's just that the other characters and abilities lend themselves more to experimentation. Compare spawning a tornado you can turn into an elemental tornado, with a typical bullet time. Bounty hunter was done dirty imo, easily the worst one.

The way your review talks about the whole package almost makes it sound like one of the primary reasons the game exists is to prove that this newly formed indie studio is in fact making functional games and isn't susceptible to over-promising, under-delivering, or straight up failing to produce a fun playable game.
I don't say this to dunk on any game developers, but it seems like success stories like Supergiant, or redemption arcs like Hello Games, stand out among a sea of game developers drowning in a market crowded with AAA tentpole franchises, PC publishing being a bag full of angry cats, and the ever increasing awareness of how pervasive shitty management and abusive work culture is from top to bottom.
I also don't want recognition for a game to boil down to "Congrats! You made it!", or for that to supplant critical examination of a game. I love your approach to game reviews, and I'm particularly thankful that you take the time to parse out things you don't like from an execution or design perspective vs things that aren't to your taste, and that you explain why for everything.
I want to know more about the relationship between Games Pass and indie devs. The info that came out during GDC was very heartening to hear, but I want to know more about it. Things like what makes a dev want their game to get a day 1 games pass release, how does that affect their budgets and production timeline, does Microsoft get involved in the development at all, or do they just work out a deal with publishers? I want to know more! Because I want Games Pass and whatever subscription based services that come after it to be a more reliable way for indies to publish.

RPS have compared the game to oldschool Fallout, and while that was supposed to be praise, it ironically also encircles what seems to be both this game's core problem, and also a problem of the genres it's stuck in between - the traditional RPG mindset expects you to play in a specific way that represents your player character, for better or worse - whether it's the most effective path or not, and whether the game entices you to, or not. In an immersive sim however, player discovery stands front and center, and the game has to offer incentive to try out different playstyles, and make sure they all stand on equal footing in terms of effectiveness and entertainment value. So here you have the narrative underpinnings and c&c of an RPG (minus a proper dialogue system), but no stat game to funnel you into building a specific character with a specific playstyle. Instead, you get the trademark simplistic Arkane skill tree that lets you mix and match a bunch of combat abilities to your hearts content, but also completely distracts from any roleplaying unless you as the player very much force yourself to.

I always loved Arkane games because they feel like RPG games designed for kids with adhd. They focus on the gameplay and don't bog down the experience with "oh boy a new town, time to talk to absolutely everyone for 2 hours before I can go kill stuff again". Games like Deus Ex, Vampyr etc where half the experience is talking to every man, woman and bum on the street for clues gets on my nerves. Just let me kill and explore
