Been rewatching Bojack Horseman recently, and it's impossible to not imagine Bojack playing DnD and hamming it up as this Dragon Lord when I hear him talk here. For anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about, Will Arnett voices the titular character in that series.
This is a pretty easy purchase for me. I loved Borderlands 3 despite the story - played it through with 3 characters and maxed out 2 of them, doing absolutely everything there was to do. Going to really enjoy this.
After playing Elden Ring since launch, it’s great to kick back with a looter shooter with great gun play. BL mixed with DnD is the mixture I didn’t know I needed! 😊

@@Zathren I wouldn't say that. A number of the main characters in 3 were unbearable at times. 2 didn't have that same problem, outside of Cl4ptrap sometimes.
@@sumSOTY I disagree. How they chose to kill Roland off and forced Lilith to take his place rather arbitrarily is one of the many things that bothered me.
@@Zathren I thought that Roland’s death and the impact it had on the story in BL2 was actually quite great (especially if you consider the Assault on DragonKeep DLC). I’d say that the writing comes far more undone in BL3, when Lilith’s role feels much more hackneyed and forced. She’s kind of void of charisma in BL3, whereas she has so much spunk and fight in her in BL2. Whereas Roland’s lack of charisma was not only played for a laugh, but central to him being the leader of the rebellion, as he was the most qualified for the role, and this made him stand out so much more when he was surrounded by wacky and irreverent characters.
@@Zathren I don’t understand your logic. Jack sets a trap up for us to try to save Roland which is the turning point where Angel loses Lilith’s trust and has to sacrifice herself to stop Jack. How was this arbitrary? Because you liked Roland better than Lilith?
I think you are mistaking BL3 here. That is what bl3 should've been, but Wonderlands is definitely up to par on the standards we used to have when releasing games

Actually very excited for this game. I’m a gamer and love fantasy and sci-fi. My fiancé is a girls girl and wanted to play video games with me because I enjoy them. We played borderlands 3 and she loved it but I was never a BL person. I feel like this game will not only appeal to both of us, but also give her a nice transition into the fantasy realm and maybe open her up to more traditional RPGs etc
I like how you test the game's performance on multiple systems, but one should be using the top GPU on the steam hardware survey (currently the GTX 1060) and the other could be your top of the line card. This way you get the best case scenario AND the most applicable scenario when reviewing PC performance.
He's testing 1440p, maybe if he was testing 1080p then older cards would be more viable. The test level is higher than most gamers standard display already tbf
As someone with over 500 hours in bl3, I absolutely love how you took like 30% of this review to dunk on bl3. I love the borderlands formula in terms of gameplay, but god damn does gearbox make the same mistakes over and over with writing, ui, and pc ports.
The biggest problem I had with BL3 was that legendary weapons dropped wayy too much & there wasnt another rarety above them. Made the game really boring, so Im hoping we get a new rarety above legendary in this game.
Many of the previews said they dont drop frequently anymore and that blues and purples were more meaningful in wonderlands. Not sure if they will add another level but it's definitely possible 🤞
This! BL3 loot system was awful. You literally would never need to use any green or blue guns, bc u have a full inventory of golden ones. That was just sad.
I always loved watching “Hey Ash watcha playin?” Shorts on TH-cam. Then I found out her brother had a big part in Borderlands (or maybe came up with it?) and she voiced tiny Tina…. Which was my favorite part. Now she has her own world In a game!!! I know I need this in my life and I’m not into shooters that much. I totally feel this kid style and for it to be done in this fashion with the D&D aspects. Man this is so cool!
1:20 - Don't forget that the gameplay in BL3 was also massively improved over BL2, in addition to the things you listed. Agreed that the writing in BL3 was very bad though.

Scaling enemies are a complete non-starter for me. I want leveling to mean more than new modifiers and skills. One should become more powerful relative to the enemies as the game goes on, imho
Eh it means nothing anyway, I have buddies who will drop me modded weapons that one shot everything. I'm really just playing for the humor and the story.
Scaling enemies makes sense for this as u will be farming for loot. If a level 10 boss drops a specific legendary then farming for that weapon when ur level 10+ would make no sense because the weapon would way underpowered
I love the gameplay loop of the BL games. But I'm not ready to play another one right now. I think this will be a solid game to buy one in a Steam sale 6 months from now.
If you like the Borderlands gameplay but dislike Borderlands games, I suggest checking out Gunfire Reborn. You basically end up with a late game Borderlands build after less than 2 hours, it got both weapons and skills. Multiple classes that can play in various ways. Amazing RPG elements, good progression that keeps you hooked but still take a long time to be maxed out, lots of unlockable content and insane replayability as it is structure like a roguelike.
@@scrums4748 Have you played all characters ? unlocked all weapons ? Beat difficulty R8 ? I mean, the 4 location you'll fight in will never change, but that's fine since you will play differently every time try you play. Borderlans it's the opposite, you'll encounter a variety of places to fight in, but the game will always play the same. Borderlands pace is quite slow and can be boring because of story/quest/exploration design. Gunfire you can have within 2 hours action pack FPS Gun RPG gameplay with lots of build variety and fun challenge to tackle. It's basically like if you could play Left for Dead 2 with 50 differents ways you can equip your character to kill 50 different types of zombies.
One thing I think BL3 did extremely well is the environments, there was so many unique and fresh locations in that game because of having the ability to travel to new planets. Then add the dlc content in there, the game has great gameplay, probably the best in the franchise, but the narrative was wholly unforgivable
It is so wild to me. If they structured the game so every piece of dialogue was skippable, it would still be a much better game. That's how bad the storyis. Lol.
Borderlands gameplay/combat always delivers. I'm praying the writing doesn't make me cringe too much. I was one of the many who ended up muting dialogue in borderlands 3, I remember having physical pain whenever i heard it 😂
i thought i was the only one who had to mute the dialogue lol finding out it was a common fix both hilarious and sad. Hope they learned something from that.
Man the gearbox servers have ALWAYS been so bad and disappointing at start. Nothing worse than wanting to play a new game with your mates and the servers messing up everything. This happens with EVERY gearbox release. 😞
Borderlands has one of my favourite art styles of any game ever, and “fantasy with modern weaponry” is a niche genre I’m interested in. Seems like a fun as heck game. Will totally give it a shot, one day. Borderlands 3’s /almost/ unmatched FPS gameplay with the maniac craze of Tiny Tina and DnD concepts with what may actually tolerable writing sounds like a recipe for a great game.
Thanks for covering Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, been looking forward to this one! The worst thing about Borderlands 3 for me was, like you hinted at, the lack of convincing writing which undermined the story/characters, which for me destroyed the replayability of the game... (after having played as FL4K, I didn't want to have another run with Moze, Amara or Zane) But I'm really glad to hear Tiny Tina's is doing great, I think Gearbox is making the right move here to shift the focus away from Ava and more to Tiny Tina. My thoughts aside, great review, looking forward to the next one!
Never played a Borderlands game before but I'm very tempted. A first-person AAA DnD RPG where your DM is an actual character who influences the world around you and where it's clear that a lot of the plot and comedy come from improv is a dream game of mine, even if I do wish that it was the sort of idea used for a new IP rather than a franchise spinoff.
@@hellwashere3821 Why on earth would the algorithm prefer titles with "recommend"? The biggest thing I think they should have done is make all travel in the world via the Overworld map. They have a mix between the overworld and the traditional Borderlands style of portals/map exits to the next area, and I think it made it confusing at times as to how I was supposed to travel around. I think the idea of a D&D game would have been better suited to this. I found that walking around the overworld and doing the minor encounters/quests to be far better than trudging through the maps in first person mode. I don't really think I have any of the issues with the game that Skill Up has, but I am 100% over walking across borderlands maps. I've played every game to 100% completion and I just am tired of doing that. It would have been a nice change of pace for this game, being a spin off, to just completely eradicate that from the formula. If only to give us a break from it for a game.
Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep is one of my favorite DLC's ever, I'm glad they're doing something with it. Will probably wait for the Steam version though.

Borderlands 2 is one of my most played games, finished it over 10 times, finished the first and pre-sequel many times as well... and I couldn't get through Borderlands 3 even once! The story is such a huge part of Borderlands, the third one was just a failure to my eyes.
@@enotsnavdier6867 In story I include world building, environments, music, humor... Maybe not a huge part compared to other games but a big part of what drew me in each of these games. Anyway, different people enjoy things for different reasons. That's not hard to understand.

Damn, lot of hate for BL3 writing. I personally thought it was only fine, but I've definitely heard way worse writing from other games. Although I agree BL2 writing was better! Looking forward to Tiny Tina's Wonderlands for sure
I've always found that complaint of OMG theirs Borderlands in my Borderlands game to be hilarious myself. Good that's what I want and expect from a Borderlands game and if you don't like Borderlands don't buy a Borderlands game. If you expecting it to turn into a CRPG all of a sudden your going to be disappointed. Don't buy a cheese Quesadilla and expect it not to have cheese when it was clearly advertised as having cheese as well.
!!!!WARNING!!!! Do not get this game if you intend to do any split screen whatsoever. They have decided to cut down the UI during split screen to such an extent that you cant even tell if a gun is an SMG or Pistol, there is no flavour text saying what kinds of alternate fire there is or anything beyond damage/fire rate etc. spellbooks (grenades) are the same and only have core stats leaving you to have to inspect every individual item just to find out what it does beyond core stats. even class items....nothing, It is completely unplayable. Please upvote this for visibility as I and many others may only buy this on certain platforms because of split screen on the same machine.
The thought of combining two random classes and getting a piece of rare loot that fits by boosting both classes, is making my dopamine receptors tingle

Love the critical role inclusion! Honestly the BL2 DLC was my fav borderlands experiences so I was sold before I even watched this video. This does seem promising but I'm tired of buggy experiences that don't get fixed. I really wish they would fix that shit before launch...
Borderlands has had the smoothest controller aiming I’ve ever used. Even on PC with thousands of hours on shooters I still use controller with the BL games. It is truly the Dark Souls of shooter controls.
The only fix I found for sniper rifles was by using the DPI setting button on my mouse to increase the DPI making it move better, but that means that when you aren't using one you have to click it until you're back to your normal settings. Definitely NOT a fix unless you already play with a very high DPI setting, but it temporarily works I guess
Shillup is 100% required viewing before any new game is bought. I may not agree with everything but damn if it's not a great source of insightful information.
Sounds like I'd enjoy this but unfortunately, Randy Pitchford is still alive and running Gearbox, and therefore I will not be purchasing, playing, or pirating their products.

i think they meant for spells to randomize just like guns with parts and u can somewhat control the pets with the ping system just like bl3, in any case, i am so ready for the game on friday.
I really hope this turns out well. BL3 burned me so bad as a long time fan. I bought the season pass and didn't play any of the DLC because by the time it all released I was over it. My biggest issue with the decisions they made in BL3 were the nerfs, I loved finding game breaking combos and just melting shit with my friends but they continually nerfed everything I found enjoyable about it. I loved the borderland series for how zany it was and finding the most ridiculous shit possible felt like a natural extension of that. I'd play destiny if I wanted a balanced lootershooter. TLDR imma wait for this one probably.
Glad to hear it turned out more enjoyable/less annoying than BL3. One of the biggest problems I had with BF3 was not enough Tina. I mean, she was barely in the game.
BL3 didn't have enough Tiny Tina or Mr. Torgue. I got to have my TNT. What it did have was a new character in every level that immediately was forgotten after every loading screen.
Great review! Only thing I disagreed with was the level scaling complaint. As someone who does every side quest and explores every nook and cranny I'm happy that the game scales with me so I don't overlevel the main story and end up trivializing some great fights. But seriously though, your review was awesome and super thorough, loved it
Well, technically, he isn't directly responsible for the games now. Still though, I wonder what horrors he will bring to reality using the extra cash. How many more actors will he mercilessly annoy?
i made a dual spell mage and the game was pretty much on easy mode lol. getting that Cooldown Reduction to like, -70 percent made the game feel awesome. who needs guns when you can rain 4 meteors from the sky, or spawn a massive iceberg, with 3 spell charges and a 5 second cooldown. It was one hell of a power trip.
As a big D&D fan this peaked my interest, I enjoyed the first version of this from the Borderlands 2 DLC but BL3 left me scorned. Hopefully this can make up for that game.
Cheers for the VA commentary Ralph. Ever since I started working in the industry, I've started noticing just how few people actually talk about voice acting in games as a crucial segment, and I love it when folks notice the amazing performances by my VA colleagues. Keep it up, much love.
The art of the game and levels gave me Spyro/R&C vibes, that is always a good thing for me. As for enemies scaling with you I wish they were stronger. My Spellshot is so broken my weapons and spells are more than 10 levels below my level.
I hate enemy level scaling, it makes leveling up seem pointless. This is yet another reason elden ring is so good. Difficulty increases with area progression rather than level progression
@@extremelyboredtatsumaki.495 What are you smoking? I mean you could finish the game at Rune level 1 but you'd have to be damn good. You're absoutely right on the Sniper issue. I love using snipers in the Borderlands series, but in this game they are totally unusable. Really sad, but overall still an amazing game!
Thanks for such a comprehensive and fair review. I was planning to get this at launch but I’m not so sure now. £60 for a buggy game that may not be patched. What on Earth is wrong with the gaming industry?
@@Steve_Johnson_ it will definitely start buggy but saying it wont get patched is a far stretch. Its a triple A game by a big studio and they have fixed bugs with previous borderlands games pretty fast so I dont see that changing here

Like elden ring, dying light, battlefield etc as all recent examples of games with horrible performance issues at launch on PC, leading many people to refund. Why are you surprised by this? It's the industry standard for the past decade or so. If you don't want to support it, then you literality can't play a single AAA game ever, atleast not on PC. PS and switch exclusives are usually good. Just wait till its discounted, borderland games get insane discounts through steam pretty often, more so than most games.

Funny thing was, Bolands2 had the same writing flaws that the 3rd and pre-sequal had. The more you play it the more noticeable it becomes.
Sounds like a great "sale" game. Let them patch it, release some dlc, and we gonna have a decent game next year.
I think you are mistaking BL3 here. That is what bl3 should've been, but Wonderlands is definitely up to par on the standards we used to have when releasing games
@@BlastOffer So having the UI fight the player is up to par on standards? Actually considering most games releases for the past couple of years do this, yeah you're right.

We played borderlands 3 and she loved it but I was never a BL person. I feel like this game will not only appeal to both of us, but also give her a nice transition into the fantasy realm and maybe open her up to more traditional RPGs etc
Ohhh yeah you’ll have to show her Skyrim if she takes to the fantasy setting 😁
I like how you test the game's performance on multiple systems, but one should be using the top GPU on the steam hardware survey (currently the GTX 1060) and the other could be your top of the line card.

Borderlands pace is quite slow and can be boring because of story/quest/exploration design. Gunfire you can have within 2 hours action pack FPS Gun RPG gameplay with lots of build variety and fun challenge to tackle.
One thing I really appreciate about your channel is the fact that you put the gist of the review in the title
Thanks for covering Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, been looking forward to this one!
The worst thing about Borderlands 3 for me was, like you hinted at, the lack of convincing writing which undermined the story/characters, which for me destroyed the replayability of the game... (after having played as FL4K, I didn't want to have another run with Moze, Amara or Zane)
But I'm really glad to hear Tiny Tina's is doing great, I think Gearbox is making the right move here to shift the focus away from Ava and more to Tiny Tina.
Awful Interface. Numerous bugs. Unpolished release. Truly terrible controls. Broken quest log. Useless in-game map. Antiquated map design. Frame drops. Constant disconnects. Recommended.

The story isn't really a huge part of Borderlands, the first one barely even had a story.

Great review! Only thing I disagreed with was the level scaling complaint. As someone who does every side quest and explores every nook and cranny I'm happy that the game scales with me so I don't overlevel the main story and end up trivializing some great fights.
But seriously though, your review was awesome and super thorough, loved it
Every borderlands I have to weigh up the consequences of giving Randy Pitchford my money.
Well, technically, he isn't directly responsible for the games now. Still though, I wonder what horrors he will bring to reality using the extra cash. How many more actors will he mercilessly annoy?

It was one hell of a power trip.
As a big D&D fan this peaked my interest, I enjoyed the first version of this from the Borderlands 2 DLC but BL3 left me scorned. Hopefully this can make up for that game.
They fixed the quest toggle by allowing you to now pan through quests, like back to your last quest, after picking up a new quest. Very handy.
Cheers for the VA commentary Ralph. Ever since I started working in the industry, I've started noticing just how few people actually talk about voice acting in games as a crucial segment, and I love it when folks notice the amazing performances by my VA colleagues.

The art of the game and levels gave me Spyro/R&C vibes, that is always a good thing for me. As for enemies scaling with you I wish they were stronger. My Spellshot is so broken my weapons and spells are more than 10 levels below my level.

Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep is hands down one of the best DLC's of any game ever.
Thanks for such a comprehensive and fair review. I was planning to get this at launch but I’m not so sure now. £60 for a buggy game that may not be patched. What on Earth is wrong with the gaming industry?
Btw when he said it may not get patched he was on about the user interface not the bugs. The bugs will no doubt get patched
LAGxKALON How can you be so sure? Lots of games stay buggy now, I have no doubt this game will be the same.
@@Steve_Johnson_ it will definitely start buggy but saying it wont get patched is a far stretch. Its a triple A game by a big studio and they have fixed bugs with previous borderlands games pretty fast so I dont see that changing here
Bugs can be fixed, but bad UI and design choices probably won't, so if the latter bothers you, maybe buy on a sale, or not at all.
which is the same for every AAA game release, they're all $100 AUD and buggy on release.

First Elden Ring, and now Wonderlands.
I'm still mad at you for trashing ANTHEM though, haha (even though the review was completely accurate)!
I played that 9 year old DLC 2 months ago. Considering how good that is, I'm surprised it took Gearbox this long to develop the full, triple A successor. It's still good today.
From what I'm getting at, it's like the best of both worlds, of Battleborn and Borderlands; and that's something I'm quite looking forward to. Definitely will be picking this up on Friday! Thanks Skill Up!

how does that feel like a punch in the gut?
Borderlands 2 is one if my favourite games of all time. The writing, characters, DLCs, endgame... I've replayed this game alone and with friends multiple times and had blast every single time.
Borderlands 3: After interesting but dissapointing BL :The Pre-sequel and awesome Tales from Borderlands, I was hyped. EGS exclusivity meant that I didn't buy the game and I wasn't able to finish it when playing "sailor's edition" because writing was so painfully awful.
But I will pick up this one 100%.
I was already excited to hop on to this game regardless of the what reviewers would have judged it, because I simply adore the borderlands series... all throughout the good and the bad......
