@@sgt.thundercok4704 Gotta gauge a purchase decision off of something. Trailers, steam reviews, video reviews, corporate reviews, aggregate reviews, everyone's going to pick something to check before spending their money and time on a game. TH-cam reviewers are nice because you can get a sense of what they like in a game and why. Personally I find it a lot easier to trace SkillUp's reasoning for a recommendation than an aggregate saying a game is a 7.632 out of 10 from 13 reviewers whose game preferences I don't know.
That intro synopsis is exactly what I want to hear. I don't need every game to try and be too much. Not every game can be Outer Wilds, Disco Elysium or Inscryption. We often need a good brain cleanser and I'm glad to here that is what we're getting here.
The game is absolutely fantastic! Not too deep a story, linear gameplay, cowboys, vampires, monsters, amazing scenery and stellar fighting action! I think they will make several sequels . It’s very different and I love it!
It's nice to see a game that limits your ability to move and go where you want with extremely obvious invisible walls and boring repetitive combat that devolves into the same one two combo to deal with everything making your entire arsenal and move set useless. All with the same jack animations each time and same bugs with said animations. Yeah, it's great. 👍 👌
Darksiders. This has the feel of Darksiders and I have replayed that game on various platforms over the years. No innovation but frankly I don't want that in every title - simple but well executed is glorious. No live service garbage, no cash shops, no gambling crates, great stuff:) Thank you for putting this on my radar!
I kinda miss the PS2 and xbox 360 era. Games used to be... well just games, not a bullshit excuse to sell battlepass and micro transactions. AAA studios have gone toward such greedy business models in the last decade.
I just want to say, I greatly appreciate every time one of these videos comes out and you speak to how well it does or does not perform on Steam Deck. Thanks much.
This guy is one of the worst reviewers. He's not open minded. I wouldn't be surprised if he got paid to make it sound better than what it really is. Mostly other reviewers have been giving it 7s. It's nothing special
We neeeeed! We absolutely need games like these. Games that are just games! Not every game needs to be industry defining master works. AA games used to be that fun middle ground where you knew what you were getting and it delivers on that.
Commenting at the start of watching just to say I'm really pleasantly surprised you've reviewed this one Ralph! I only learned this game even existed within the last week or so after seeing a trailer and thinking "Hey that looks pretty sweet"
I love the Ascent, and have been really hoping for more games like it. That just feel incredibly good to play and slap a smile on my face from beginning to end. So refreshing to have more video game ass video games that get me nostalgic for 360 type fun. The facts that I can play with friends is a sweet bonus. :)
After about an hour playing I'm really enjoying this. It's exactly what I need too. A fun game that is done well. Knows what it is trying to be and doesn't sell itself as anything more. My only complaint is the graphics options on current gen consoles. Surely with some FSR or other resolution trickery we could gen a higher resolution than 1080 at 60fps. Even the quality mode doesn't seem particularly sharp (Playing on Series X). Hopefully they can patch in sominthing to help.
This game feels very old school in the best way possible. These type of games just aren't made anymore nowadays and it's so refreshing to see a developer not just make an attempt at it again, but firmly hit the nail right on the head. Can only hope this game inspires other devs and shows that not every game nowadays has to be an open world rpg with different gear rarities, etc.
Great review. Should be pointed out that it could use some work on PS5/Series X and performance mode isn’t really going to cut it on a 4K TV. But definitely on for this a few patches down the line.
Which is a weird choice if you ask me. Maybe they should just opt to 1080p/1440p to reach 60fps in a special performance mode? You aren't force to run at 4k, if many of the late xbox one X and Ps4 Pro performance comparison is any indication.
4K/30 i could accept if we also had 2K/60, but i read somewhere it was 1080p/60 which is a bit of a shame. maybe they'll up it in a post-launch patch. would be nice.
This is the sort of game I'll come back to again and again. A 30-40 hour mega AAA game is usually a one and done, yet I'm already planning to go through all the difficulties on this one.
Exactly, after the end credits i immediately started NG+ on Evil. Been a long time i had such a good time with a game that i wanted more of it. Including GoW Ragnarok which was kind of a let down for me cuz it felt bloated and filled to the brim with uninteresting and boring stuff to do.
Very good review! Ya know what vibe I also got from this? This is kinda what The Order 1886 should've aimed for. That game was panned for being just a campaign, nothing else, no PvP, no side quests, nothing. And while this game isn't shooting for an infinitely replayable impossible standard, it's still a deep enough experience to be meaty while it lasts. And that's pretty neat.
@@wild360 I loved it, but I do agree with folks that considered it a rental or wasn't worth full full full retail. I got it on a flash sale for about 10 bucks, played through it twice, and definitely got my money's worth. Very sad more wasn't done to make it a franchise. 😔
@@RedShadowOfSaturn Same. For $60, it was hard sale. Like you I got it for $10 and platinumed it a couple of sittings. Unfortunately, this was supposed to be a more ambitious project that didn't happen so Sony tanked the studio.
@@Bloodynine606 When they're interesting and add features or systems or gameplay or world building or new characters or emotional stories, they can be great, nearly integral to an experience of a full game. When the bulk of side quests involve "collect X berries" or "kill Y boars," for little to no real interesting reason or purpose beside giving a player a way point to follow and a task to complete as a vehicle for rewards, then yes, overrated garbage. They need to be judged case to case. Linear games with no wiggle room can often feel too restrictive, but having wiggle just for the sake of it is worse.
super excited to hear your perspective along with GmanLives. looks like both of you are opposite with opinions on this, but it's great to hear all sorts of things. thanks for the work!
Yeah, unfortunately the flaws he pointed out make it difficult to consider playing it for what good it offers. It is a combat game and it has issues with combat and enemies. If it was some action rpg where story sucked, it would not matter.

This kiiiind of has a similar feel to GOW 2018. Obviously the energy is a bit different, but that combat really reminded me of how I played God of War. Even the punching looks like spartan rage mode
I love the look of this game so much. The only grip I have that I know will be too frustrating and distracting to me and my OCD is that the camera is waay too close to Jesse especially during combat.
I'm so glad this turned out well. I'd been keeping my eye on this and had been cautiously optimistic, so i'm really happy to go buy it and start it downloading whilst i take the dogs for a walk, after seeing this video. Nothing too crazy or that i'd have to get really deeply sunk into... just something fun and intense i can play for a bit then go do something else.
Getting strong Binary Domain (XB360) vibes from this. Not the setting or anything. Just that you think you know what your you're going to get but when playing you realize it's much more fun than you expected. This game looks great! Cool review too,
BD was a great title by the same people that did the Yakuzas, but i personally disliked the relationship system. Shooting robot heads and making them fight each other was cool though
I have been eagerly waiting for this game, hoping it would be a damn good time and here it is delivering exactly that! I for once did not think that it would be a “strong recommend” but, boy am I happy to see that :)
This really comes across as the kind of game I loved back in my uni days and that's awesome because I've missed those games. A perfect example in my opinion is Psy-Ops which was a ridiculously fun game. I'll definitely be checking this out at some point in the future.
I strongly agreed with you about Weird West, and I strongly agree with you here, too. I reviewed Evil West for Entertainium and it's such a good time. One of the standout elements for me is the superb enemy designs - a real strong point for Flying Wild Hog, I think. For anyone wondering, the game took me around 12-13 hours to beat and there is an NG+ mode.
Glad to hear that this game is fun. I was interested in it and will probably buy it sooner or later. I was looking for some fun game without any deep narratives nor trying to be groundbreaking.
Oh god this looks so good I'm in love. There was so few updates about it but now thay I'm looking at it it's got everything I could want. The graphics, the art design, the action. I hope it's somehow replayable(although it doesn't have to be) just like RE4
I was thinking to pick this up at a discount, but after looking around at reviews, I should support this kind of developers more. Perfectly functional games right off the gate, no BS mtx or always online stuff. Good ol fun beat them up that does not pretend to be something it is not. Instant buy.
I've never been more unsure about a game. Your review AND Gman's both seem very thorough and both seem to view some of the same aspects in very different ways. This may be a wait for sale for me (or Game Pass, fingers crossed), but it could end up feeling like a waste of time OR one of my favorite popcorn games of the last several years.
Funny to watch Skillups GOW Valhalla review and specifically say out loud how the Rougelite element made he realize how much DEPTH is 100% in GOW combat. Playing Evil West as we speak as its the game of the month on PS5, and it is GoW in inspiration alone. I know skillup would retcon those comments in this video a little based on his Valhall realization. GoW is forgiving on Normal, where modern players for some reason if they aren't forced to interact with game systems they just don't and then pretend they aren't still present. GoW has wild depth for a AAA over the shoulder character action game. The combo potential and seamless mid combo switching between 3 distinct weapons, all with ranged capabilities, a shield with specific toolsets and relic use is miles beyond this game. And I'm loving this game. It's a classic shlockey hokey 360 era AA 7/10 game. Pure fun. But the animations, attack weight, enemy hit registry etc are just not the same. It's objective. GoW Ragnarok especially is the best modern AAA over the shoulder melee character action game that exist. And before anyone makes a fool, Bayonetta and DMC are NOT CHARACTER ACTION GAMES. They are level, arena based STYLE FIGHTERS. Different genres and also not over the shoulder. But nevertheless, Evil West is well worth Free if you have PS Plus, or a discounted price up to 35$. Unfortunately, these comments complain of games like this not existing anymore and blah Blah AAA......but it's all of you who then don't go out and buy these games. Which is why they flop, and why would a publisher front money to produce AA games when everytime the same gamers wishing they were around don't buy them. If all your sentiments in the comments were true and not echo chamber nonsense, this game wouldn't have flopped. Darksiders 3 wouldn't have flopped. I play every AAA release, but I also have Darksiders 1-3 Plat trophies, playing Evil West, Plague Tale, etc. Yet all these games do not sell well. So clearly gamers use their energy to complain about live service this, games too long that, yet don't buy these titles.
These are the type of games I miss...linear, single player shooters with great design. We used to get so many fantastic tightly made games. Now everything is an open world with nothing meaningful to do apart from collect junk and fight stuff. Linear games take out all the grind and get straight to the missions that are worth playing. Looking forward to getting this to support the Devs.
@@luluna5228 I never said open world is worse. Open world just feels uninspired in many cases. I love many open world games but I miss the more focused games we used to get when they were linear. I got this and liked it for the first few missions. Then the jank and repetitive enemies set in. It just throws tons of enemies at you to call it difficult like 3x the first boss later on. What started as a 8/10 ended as a 6/10. Really surprised SU recommended this so highly.
Also it cant decide whether its too easy or needlessly hard. Some areas would have the same goons coming at you for 5mins straight with no real rhyme or reason behind it. The game progression started really nice and I wanted to love the game but after the first few missions I grew tired of it very quickly. Tried to go back a couple of times and just got uninterested. Its very much God of War reskinned (really nicely) but not as good and gameplay is repetitive and sadly inconsistent.
This reminds me of Madworld/Anarchy Reigns. I recently got a Metal Gear Rising and Bayonetta on Steam and once I get my fun out of those two I will definitely make this my next purchase. From what ive seen I love the environental details like the carcass of the dead blood god in the swamp you showed. Reminds me of seeing Bob the Titan in the Blood Swamps level of Doom Eternal.

@@tokyo3128 these games are about diving in and taking it as an experience... sounds stoooopid, but overanalysis kills this sort of thing. It's like John wick, or the marvel movies. Buckle up, stop worrying and have fun with it. Take it seriously, and you take the fun away.
@@tokyo3128 I'm not really trying to convince anybody... more like trying to explain why this type of game is so fun... it's like a hole in the wall diner or bar. It's not reinventing the wheel, but if you want a good jack and coke, or bacon and eggs with fire atmosphere, it's wayyyy better when you dive in than the AAA market tends to offer. I was also a fan of Abraham Lincoln vampire slayer, zombieland, and kubo and the 2 strings, which most people kinda bounced off of because they weren't in that mainstream.
I much prefer games like this nowadays. A focused and contained experience that doesn't try to pretend that it's more than what it is. Most triple A games today are a 50-100 hour story heavy slogs that stretch the limit of the fun factor of their gameplay to the point that you start wondering when the hell does the game end or if you're even playing a game at all.
This game is mediocre at best for anyone looking for a good narrative and fun gameplay. The only good thing about it is the setting - some interesting comic-book-worthy ideas that might remind you of The Order 1886. Other than that, the game is pretty sloppy in almost every aspect: the combat gets boring after the first 2-3 hrs in, the level design is very basic and the art style doesn't help it, the presentation is bad even by the AA standards (seriously, those cutscenes are quite something in a bad way)... the list goes on.
You're 100% right. I'm looking at these cutscenes and they look like ass. I really don't know how he got all this satisfaction from these terribly rendered cutscenes.
Honestly Skill Up, your content was the best thing to come out of me playing the Division 1. Glad I found you, glad you are still as awesome as always.
100% disagree with everything in this review. I get it, we don't get games with this kind of premise anymore but, that's no excuse to overlook all the huge flaws in the game. And for what? Just to try and make this garbage heap successful? All in the hopes others will try their hand at making a game with a similar premise and setting? All so we can see more games trying to chase this game's false success by using a similar premise? Why? Why does this have to do good just to get a good game that also has that paranormal wild west premise? It's dumb and you are just inviting more bad games further damaging chances of seeing that good game to help make this type of thing more common.
Same here, I got so disappointed with the game, bought because of this review, and usually I tend to really like and agree with his videos. Honestly what really pisses me off is the fact that this game still costs 60€ here in Europe and is expensive for the fact that is extremely outdated and I only see people recommending it on the comments section without saying anything about all the flaws, and the "I strongly recommend," which usually means at least a B+ game in his words.

@@sgt.thundercok4704 before you’ve played it? Yeah I don’t have the money to be that condescending
At this point games that aren't out to shift the paradigm of art, but accomplish the goals it sets for itself are actually X factor. I'm in.
It's nice to see more games like this. The open world craze is getting old
Open worlds are full of busy-work. I agree, the concept is overrated
It's nice to see a game that limits your ability to move and go where you want with extremely obvious invisible walls and boring repetitive combat that devolves into the same one two combo to deal with everything making your entire arsenal and move set useless. All with the same jack animations each time and same bugs with said animations.

I am SO hyped that you enjoyed this game. I was really hoping that it would be exactly how you've described it!
This guy is one of the worst reviewers. He's not open minded. I wouldn't be surprised if he got paid to make it sound better than what it really is. Mostly other reviewers have been giving it 7s. It's nothing special
Do you base your enjoyment of games on whether or not SkillUp enjoys them?
Full of action, simple story, fun good old slasher. Somehow very refreshing to play. Just finished it and ejoyed it just as the author of the video.
I'm so excited for this game! Can't wait to play it this week! It's like a mash up of Evil Within and God of War.
I love the Ascent, and have been really hoping for more games like it. That just feel incredibly good to play and slap a smile on my face from beginning to end. So refreshing to have more video game ass video games that get me nostalgic for 360 type fun. The facts that I can play with friends is a sweet bonus. :)
The closest thing to The Ascent is Warhammer Inquisitor Martyr. They just revamped it as well. Also Co-op with good gunplay and alot more variety
The Ascent was my game of the year, i recommended it to everyone I could. Loved the action/low fire system but also was a big fan of the characters.
@@Konfide4043 is Warhammer martyr on console?
The Ascent was fantastic. Loved everything about it
I loved it, but also couldnt finish it because of how repetitive the combat felt. They really nailed the aesthetic and music though.
This video game gives me big video game energy. Glad to see a video game is being made in the day of stores with gameplay.
Oh wow, I was not waiting a strong recommend for this. Excited to watch and hear your thoughts
This sounds EXACTLY like my kinds of game! Sometimes you just need a great action game with good audio-visuals!
With tech like fsr2.1 around, I don't think they put in the effort so I will wait as well.
4K/30 i could accept if we also had 2K/60, but i read somewhere it was 1080p/60 which is a bit of a shame. maybe they'll up it in a post-launch patch. would be nice.
I highly recommend console players just play on fidelity....its solid and looks so much better
I had zero doubts it's gonna be a great one. a strongly recommend from you seals the deal.
Thanks, definitely my type of game.
Just picked this up on the PlayStation store for 40%off
Skill up has spoken... time to order the game :)
Your description is exactly what i was expecting and i could not be happier about it. I can’t wait to pick the game up and have a great time with it.
The Order was the ultimate weekend rental. I really enjoyed it for what it was.
Side quests are the most overrated part of gaming right now
@@Bloodynine606 When they're interesting and add features or systems or gameplay or world building or new characters or emotional stories, they can be great, nearly integral to an experience of a full game.
Had a blast with this one. Hope for a sequel. Such cool lore
Such cool wow.
super excited to hear your perspective along with GmanLives. looks like both of you are opposite with opinions on this, but it's great to hear all sorts of things. thanks for the work!
Yeah, unfortunately the flaws he pointed out make it difficult to consider playing it for what good it offers. It is a combat game and it has issues with combat and enemies. If it was some action rpg where story sucked, it would not matter.
Gman apparently kind of hated it...
@@SullyDiBruto he randomly hates every other game thats not an oldschool first person shooter but absolutely is in awe when you circlestrafe around 2d enemies for hours.
I like the idea that one level's elites are the next level's standard mobs. That's like what I consider to be the gold standard for ARPG challenge progression, the ancient and venerable Dungeon Master.
This kiiiind of has a similar feel to GOW 2018. Obviously the energy is a bit different, but that combat really reminded me of how I played God of War. Even the punching looks like spartan rage mode
i Played this at a local convention and can say, damn that game carried the convention on it's own, it's really good.
That's basically exactly what i wanted atm. Just a good time for a short while. Nothing too crazy or that i'd have to get really deeply sunk into... just something fun and intense i can play for a bit then go do something else.
I was not ready for this: what a blessing to get some SkillUp.

That little gunshot sound at the end of a combat encounter is pulled straight from Gears of War with its bell toll sound, love it!
Thought this looked excellent but was hoping you’d review this. Definitely picking it up, thanks for your work!
Glad to hear that this game is fun. I was interested in it and will probably buy it sooner or later. I was looking for some fun game without any deep narratives nor trying to be groundbreaking.

I was thinking to pick this up at a discount, but after looking around at reviews, I should support this kind of developers more. Perfectly functional games right off the gate, no BS mtx or always online stuff. Good ol fun beat them up that does not pretend to be something it is not. Instant buy.
Yeah I bought day 1 to support. No regrets. I really hope we get dlc or a sequel. Its just a good fucking time and the combat is so solid

Amazing timing Skillup!!!
This game looks superb
Wow...literally huh?
Its very much God of War reskinned (really nicely) but not as good and gameplay is repetitive and sadly inconsistent.

this is a change; you are the only one saying yes to this on my feed right now!
You nailed everything about this game! Bought it on this recommendation and I’m really enjoying it.
How can you recommend this game! It sucks hard holds your hand the whole way
I just have to say, I'm always really happy when you release a new video. Love your stuff and keep up the good work.
