The cheapest VR treadmill?! NEW KAT WALK C2 CORE // First impressions

Introducing the brand new VR treadmill from Kat VR, the C2 Core, this is the cheapest VR treadmill that Kat VR have ever made and they haven't compromised when it comes to quality and compatibility to hit that new record low price point! Kat VR sent me this C2 Core review unit and asked for my honest opinions, after using it for a few days I've compiled an initial list of pros and cons for this more "affordable" VR treadmill - . At $899 (the initial pre-release price, it rises to $999 after 15th September) this thing is a steal for the most dedicated VR users, enthusiasts who want to be as immersed as physically possible in their digital worlds will no doubt be impressed with the Kat Walk C2 Core's build quality, suite of features, compatibility, modular options and the full body workout this VR treadmill provides but for the more casual VR user this is still a hard sell even at the new price point. Just how often would a typical VR user play a game in this way? Would most users have the space to house such a device all year round? Do the casual audience want to build up a sweat whilst exploring Skyrim? It all boils down to what kind of VR user you are, but if you're looking for the most high intensity full body experience from your VR games and want a quality product for the lowest price to date (albeit still not a "cheap" price) then the C2 Core is a very interesting proposition indeed.

      Hey i'm interested in this, one question, any idea how compatible will this be with UEVR mod, or at least, are you considering a solid profile for it? Because if I can walk around on hundreds of UE4/UE5 games when the mod releases, I would seriously consider getting this. Also does this work with VORPX?

    I have a C2 and got it instead of going to the gym. The bonus of no more VR sickness for me but really my wife who could not play VR at all before has been amazing. Skyrim and Fallout are HUGE when you are actually walking or running around. As the wife said, what is the cost of living healthy and working out when it doesn't feel like work. Do I sweat. Oh yeah. But its fun. Finally not needing so much room is great. Always in the back of my mind I was afraid of punching something. Now I can relax and even though its taking up less room, I feel like I gained so much more. Kat VR is a game changer for me.

    I have a C2. It's game changing, and I don't do VR without it anymore. That's also part of the reason that I rarely do VR these days. As mentioned, the setup takes longer than standalone. It also adds one more element of troubleshooting at times, which I am just 100% burned out on when it comes to PCVR.
    Truth be told, VR was at its best for me before I bought a $4k PC. Quest 2 standalone with modded contractors was perfect. Running around in real life to move in VR in games like Skyrim, Doom VFR, and Borderlands 2 VR has been incredible, and probably exceeded the fun of standalone, but at a higher financial cost and for more stress.

      @@bhumelti636 Basically if you just want to have fun and game, I'd go with standalone. You can get a Kat Nexus that allows you to do kat walk + standalone, and that's probably going to add lots of fun and immersion with little troubleshooting stress.
      Adding a PC into the equation opens the doors for way more possibilities, but also tons of troubleshooting and stress, especially in the beginning

      Beardo Benjo was talking about setting this up and then putting it into storage after. This sounds very impractical if you have this thing. You really have to have permanent dedicated space for this to be worth it. I have the original Katwalk C, I leave it where it is and leave it plugged in and all set up. I don't have many problems at all getting it working.
      If I tried running games in Vorpx, then I'd be having problems. The two frequently conflict. Running native VR games, I don't have any problems.

    Glad to see Katwalk making another innovation, still rocking the original Katwalk c and love it.
    Fun fact, it’s about a 3 day 63 mile travel from white run to solitude on the Katwalk, enjoy!
    Side note - take some old trainers and hot glue felt to the bottom of them, it’s easier all around to walk than any shoes that Katwalk has on offer and quieter.

    I'd rather wait for something that isn't slide based. I've seen a mock up of a concept involving an exoskeleton and what looks like one of those car building arms. The idea being that it would suspend you and act as both treadmill and full body force feedback. It was purposed with a full body haptic suit. A kinda all-in-one ultimate vr rig. I'm hoping for something like that.

    Kat Walk c2+ user here. Takes me an additional 1-2 minutes to load into VR with this, so not much of an inconvenience from that point of view. I would recommend the Kat Loco S trackers if the price is too much. Those allow you to "walk in place" to produce the locomotion experience. They are only about 150-200 us dollars. Almost the same immersion level. Just a different mechanic.

    I think the main challenge of these devices is that you are essentially replacing 3dof absolute position of roomscale VR with 3dof relative movement. While for many games, having relative movement is more useful, you do lose the very intuitive, 1:1 translation of absolute position, like small sidestepping, or moving precisely against a wall to hide behind the corner. The treadmill might actually make games with decent roomscale interactions (like many puzzle games) less intuitive to play. The difficulty of the VR mobility problem is that replicating full 6dof of motion seems physically impossible.

      I have the original Katwalk C and it's amazing. For me it's primarily a fitness device and entertainment second. That said, the Serious Sam games are done SO WELL. In-game, you're going at a constant sprint and the movement decoupling (where you move & where you look are different) feels so natural. My best experience with the Katwalk C is those games. I've had other good experiences with Contagion VR and with the Luke Ross GTA V mod.
      My bad experiences have been with Vorpx. Not due to Katwalk C not working well (it very much does) but poor performance/optimization which you very much need if your headset is bouncing around a lot.

      @@A-OKski No. I have to use it with a gamepad. So I've had to be on the treadmill with a gamepad. Smooth locomotion simply means you go forward and backward like normal. You don't have that jump-movement that used to be popular a number of years ago. There is an option to have Katwalk C motion read as WASD input on the keyboard (actually just W). I might have used that. Regardless I did get the Katwalk to work. I just couldn't get any functionality with the Index controllers.

    Great video dude! Been wanting a Kat Walk for a long time now, only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger is of course the price (although $900 is more palatable), but mostly the space it takes up! I live in a pretty small apartment and while I'm lucky enough to have my own separate computer office, I've got just enough room for regular roomscale VR. I could plop a treadmill in the center of that place space and it would fit perfect (albeit be pretty in the way haha), but then I wouldn't have any room for regular roomscale. Even though I think I'd use it enough to not just be a gimmick, the trade-off of losing my regular roomscale play area doesn't work for me. Anyway, really cool to hear your thoughts, thanks for the honest review man! Lookin forward to more VR treadmill vids in the future 👍

    Is this true was it complicated and hard to get quest games to work and then did they not work well?

    I can see people kicking the back of their feet with this. When we walk, our feet don't merge completely to the center of our pelvis like I see here. That's not something you can unlearn, it's because of the concave form of the surface you have to walk on.

    I work out almost every day and am quite fit already, but every extra bit helps! Still not sure I can justify the price but glad to see it's going down, and certainly don't have the space right now, but I WILL be getting something like this at some point guaranteed, if I had the space I probably already would. Paired with the next gen of headsets and their visual clarity it will be a fantastic upgrade to the experience

  • @willxowo

    good review. everything looks fine to me, except a few big problems... the cons yeah lol. but they just need to be fixed :(
    Worst one being the foot delay, which could just be part of the game, the games will have to adapt to programming for things like this one day to be less of a gimmick and more of a feature.
    and that was extremely loud.
    size doesn't matter, I find that a small one is potentially less foot reach, having to do smaller foot steps or something.. maybe they can come S and L.
    and yeah the fact it's more of a "cool want" than a "must need" .. even with 1k.. those flaws especially delay are really bad. I avoid games with delay, and VR needs more potential games.. I see myself trying this more with Skyrim and RE4 mostly..

    What about leaning? I like military shooters. I want to be able to lay down too and lean from corners. For the price it is more for experimental use. Like you said some steps are not accurate. So that means games need to make those things more compatible.

    would love to go for a run in skyrim or something, but you will most likely end up super dizzy if u do it for long enough. Something i would consider a con, would be the small walking surface, as if u run, you might think you would fall off or something, i would do 10cm wider all around, but i havent tried it so not sure. Im assuming its like learning to run again sense you cant really take large steps.

    See I would totally invest in one of these if every game and set had a way of implementing the games motion with you walking on the platform. Unfortunately this is the first time I’ve seen someone able to move their character by acting moving like you explained with the resident evil mod. Very cool but most videos I’ve seen people are just saying how you still have to use the directional stick which defeats the whole purpose and reallly kills the immersion and makes it hard to justify that price point. Hopefully VR continues to become more popular and companies start implementing this kind of hardware with their motion controls

I love that I can burn 200 calories with the Cybershoes in about 2 hours while playing and compared to this it's very easy to set up and remove it, and immersion is surprisingly good. This would be even more immersive though, and the price is close to being right. I don't mind much weight or space, but my biggest issue is game compatibility, how ready is this to be played with any steamvr game out there, it's just plug and play?

    • @BeardoBenjo
      @BeardoBenjo  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pretty much yeah, so jumping between Skyrim, Compound, Half Life and Resi for this one video I just needed recalibrate each time I switched game, recalibrating is done with the press of one button inside the headset when you're in a new game. The Kat VR software adds a button to the Steam VR menu inside the headset, you just click that and then press calibrate.

    I’d love something like this, but I think I’d wait for the tech to be developed further and become more affordable.
    I like to rearrange my living room to give myself as much space as possible when I play VR, it’s infinitely more immersive and puts into perspective just how massive videogame worlds really are. The only downside to doing it this way is repeatedly having to turn around (irl) while turning in the opposite direction (in game) to continue walking in a straight like, which can get quite dizzying, and not being able to jog/run out of fear of running into a wall.

    Would love a follow up video when the presale is close to ending, summarizing how much you actually ended up using it. I've wanted a VR treadmill for a while, but I do fear I won't use it enough.
    One more question, does it adjust the game's maximum running speed somehow, or are you limited to what your character can do in game? Like, if I run at 80% of how fast I can run, will I notice if I turn on the jets and go to 100% for a minute, or would I just be wasting energy while my character moves only as fast as the game will allow? (put another way, could a track star run across skyrim faster than someone who just has enough cardio to run across skyrim but isn't fast?)

    • @LotsOfBologna2
      @LotsOfBologna2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the original Katwalk C. It's only as fast as the game will allow. It inputs the motion as full forward on the controller or as pressing W on the keyboard (for WASD motion) and just puts the speed at normal movement within the game.
      I see this as fitness equipment, not gaming equipment. But being a 38 year old guy wanting to get in better shape, my needs may be different than a 20 year old athlete. I think there's settings you can adjust to force you to move more in order to have it register.
      Some things to keep in mind that he didn't mention. Not all FPS are equal in terms of getting you to move a lot and have a good exercise experience. A lot of games sound like they should keep you moving and get you good exercise but in reality, you're shooting from cover and being way too stationary during fights (Titanfall 2). Others (like Into The Radius) don't have the movement as polished as I'd like. You can't do effective freelooking while running during a fight. My hands down favorites have been the Serious Sam series (1-3) which are so much fun and such a good experience. You need to keep moving CONSTANTLY and you're always at a full sprint in-game and it's so exhilarating.
      Secondly, you should pay attention to frames per second and overdo the performance requirements. I have a 3070ti and I'm not having much success with flat-to-VR games. As soon as you start running and your headset is bouncing up and down, games that would be fine otherwise look like crap. For me, this was Far Cry Primal running on Vorpx. I'm hoping the Praydog mod allows flat-to-VR games to work well for the Katwalk C but that remains to be seen.

    • @BeardoBenjo
      @BeardoBenjo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah only as fast as the game will allow, that's something I hadn't really considered and will be talking about in follow up videos, it does feel a tad strange at first when your actual speed isn't mirrored in game due to the in game movement speed restrictions. You learn to adapt to it and move slower in real life to match the pace in game but still, I'd love to be able to go full sprint in any game and move that fast but it would have to overwrite core elements of each games code 😂

What is the treadmill rated for and is there significant risk of damage if the user is over its maximum? I've been looking to vr solutions for weightloss and I've been researching treadmills like these.

    • @BeardoBenjo
      @BeardoBenjo  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hey bud, according to my contacts at Kat VR the weight limit is around 130KG or 286LBs, as far as significant risk of damage or injury I'm really not sure, when you walk on these you effectively have to trust the harness and back support structure to hold your entire weight as you lean forward into every step (feels really weird at first), so I guess the real danger would be that component breaking and the user falling flat on their face potentially. It's a tough one, I don't know personally how stress tested they are for these scenarios and how much give they have in their "limits". Personally I'd say reach out to Kat VR, they have a chat bot on their website that hands out a contact email address Service@katvr.com, hit them up as I'm confident they'll get back to you with all the info you need
