It's not a "Mazda" filter. It's a Tokyo Roki filter. The same as the black "Subaru" filters. There isn't a single, solitary issue with running the Mazda branded Tokyo Roki filter; rather than the Subaru branded Tokyo Roki filter, on a Subaru engine. It's an easier to procure option for those that don't want the hassle of importing the black, Subaru branded Tokyo Roki filters from Japan.
The issue with the Mazda filter is it's meant for rx8, if put on Subaru it goes past the header so if you're lowered and bottom out there could be a catastrophic failure that could be avoided if you just bought the in stock black Subaru Roki filter
same here, running this filter on my 13 wrx hatch with amsoil signature series 5w30. no issues and my Blackstone Lab oil report seems good and consistent.
Ive been using the rx8 filter for a couple years just from hearing that the spring pressures were the same. Its nice to have confirmation on that haha. My car is 20 years old so im not concerned about what mazda or Subaru think about my filter choice. Thanks for doing this video, it was helpful!
A lot of us researched the Mazda filter years ago to see what it's pressure relief valve is. We found they were the same specs, why we started running them. If you have a warranty on your car, then stick with the OEM Subaru ones. All my Subarus are over 20 years old, so no warranty. I run the RX8 filters on my Gravel Express, Ver 6 STI, and 96 Impreza Brighton.
Thank you so much I have been waiting for this since the o.g. video. When I was researching the specs for the usdm sti filter I saw it was 23psi and looked at the rx8 filter specs and they were 23psi to 24 psi. So seeing you actually measure the bypass and verify that it is supper appreciated and very cool
Shhhhhh! These have been my go-to for years since the subaru filters are so hard to get, and most of the major manufacturers have really been cutting corners in the quality of their filters. I have an 07, so I'm not concerned with a warranty. Reasonably priced, easily available, same valve specs, excellent manufacturing quality, and a much larger filter media. If you're not concerned with a warranty, these are awesome. Great vid as always 👍
Ah dang you're letting out the secret 😅 I've been using this filter for years on my STI. Always funny when I go into the Mazda Parts area to buy a oil filter to put onto a Subaru.
So the thing we've know for years, they're the same filter just taller. Thanks for doing this though. I know professionally/ethically for those what if scenarios you cannot recommend them but great to have more objective proof than a spec sheet.
I have used the blue Subaru filters, black Subaru filters and this rx7 filter and settled on the Purolator Boss, The esse of access is greator, the construction is top notch and the specs are, well, I think OEM. Good video, thanks!
I understand you can't recommend it for legal reasons, but it's very clear it is essentially a taller version of the Subaru filter. Doesn't matter if it came from a rotary engine or a boxer engine. It's still just an oil filter. Flow direction is the same, BPV pressure is correct, it has plenty of flow area, more than enough filtration media, it has an ADBV, and it's high quality Tokyo Roki. It has been known for quite some time that the bypass spec was the same or very close, which is part of why people ran them. Thanks for the in depth look though. Good resource to point to even if you personally can't recommend it.
@@FlatironsTuning Thank you! Reading my comment back I hope it didn't sound snarky hahaha. Wasn't meant as like an argument just an analysis of the filter. :)
I've been running the mazda filters since 2018. Ej255 at stage 2, and motul 5w40. I want an outfront built block someday and I'll run whatever filter and oil they want.
Hey John. I've been using these filters for about 4 years with no issues started using them after I did the research on the specs and found they were the same. I change my oil every 3,000 miles so I don't really have to worry about the bypass even though they are the same.
Also jumping into to confirm I've run this filter on three cars, ran the RX8 filter on a FXT which was stage2 with 294k km on it, SpecB with 200k km on it, Stg2 WRX wagon, track and autoX with 220k km. The little extra height is nice to have for a touch more oil volume on start-up and available filter media surface area.

I’ve been using this filter for a while. Although i recently ordered some rcm filters that im going to be using now. These Mazda filters are very widely used on Subarus and have been proven by many to be pretty much the same as the jdm filters. If you do have an engine issue I agree it’s easy to blame the filter so it’s safer not to use so that’s not even a question. Technically the dealer still has to prove it was the filter to deny warranty but is that a battle you even want to have? Who knows. But the same can be said about any filter including the rcm filters
Thanks for your question and thanks for your comment. You make a good point about a failure with an aftermarket filter in general. Some manufacturers will offer their own warranty (Napa comes to mind here), but I would suspect that if the manufacturer can show that their filter was designed to meet or exceed the standards of the OE filter, that Subaru would have to honor the warranty. I haven't had experience with that first hand though. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!

With the same logic we shouldn't get better radiators or airfilters, anything that improves flow of anything on our cars.
The Subaru Tokyo Roki filter for the FB25 engine is about as tall as the Mazda filter and seems otherwise identical to the EJ25 filter (including bypass valve pressure from finger-press testing). I've been using them on EJ25 engines for years for the sake of more filtration media.
Great video, answered questions I had for a long time about the Mazda filters. I've been using the Purolator Boss PBL14615 for the past couple of years on my 17 STi with great results from UOA, as far as I understand Purolator has a vastly different core design than most with some special backing to the filter media. The one thing you missed in the video. There can be a different micron rating between the two filters. Almost 100% of the time. Paper media like that has a micron or "hole" size rating that is NOMINAL not absolute. And that paper looks and feels the same if it's 5 micron, 10 micron , 15 micron and the like. The only way to tell is get a micron reader and I havnt seen one in years. That could make a big difference though. You could also perform a flow test and see what the max oil flow between the two filters is to see if one is more restricted. But that would require you build a test setup. Anyway. That's my 2 cents lol
They are both OEM filters so they are both more than adequate. You are right that they could be different, but it's definitely not a cause for concern. Nothing so special about a boxer that a rotary filter will hurt it. The chance Tokyo Roki is using two different materials for their common filters is also pretty slim.
I'm very interested to see how this compares to the JDM STI filter, I've been running this filter for about 3 years on both of my daily 04 Forester XT's without any issues that I'm aware of.
brother, dont play with my emotions man... LOL... that intro to not recommend it made my heart sink.... then by the end i was like... its fineeeee.... if the price was reasonable on subaru filters, i would run them... but paying double for the subaru filters is disgusting. thanks for the vid !!
Ha! Sorry to do that to you. Fwiw, we have the Subaru Tokyo Roki's for a good price I think: www.flatironstuning.com/subaru-tokyo-roki-oil-filter-15208aa100 Stay Tuned!
@@FlatironsTuning that price per filter is good... but the shipping kills it... to be fair thats the best price ive seem with shipping but... im getting the mazda filters for 14 bucks shipped on that "jungle website"
my Subaru legacy has the ring of fire with exhaust pipe y around the filter so I figure the engineers made the filter shorter so it would not get baked by the heat of the exhaust but in aftermarket filters my daughters Honda civic has a longer version of same size filter because nothing is near the filter so there may be clearance reasons for the shorter can size.
You need to do the filters we can get with ease here in the US... K&N, Purolator pure one gold, Mobil 1, Amsoil, and Royal purple. Keeping in mind they are synthetic media NOT paper media like the stock/oem filters are. (better flow, better filtration, designed with higher end race oils in mind) As example I do not run a paper filter or a 'oem' filter, ever. I find they just don't hold up as well to higher pressures (from high flow pumps) and seem to just do a poorer job compared to the above list.
Can you do a vid exploring more common place filters and how they compare to the subaru filter? I work at a GM dealer and have been using ACDelco filters. Maybe a comparison with OE to ACDelco, Wix, Bosch, FRAM
Used Mazda filters for a couple of years on my XT, then used amsoil once, much better oil quality when we tested the oil in the lab. Been using amsoil filters since. I use ecogard synthetic on daily cars that dont get pushed.
In Australia the Mazda RX8 Tokyo Roki is twice the price of the Subaru Tokyo Roki, so it’s an exercise of complete pointlessness to run the Mazda filter.
You certainly could work. I'd just want to look at oil pressure to the block before and after to make sure that it wasn't changed. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
I have been using motorcraft oil filters on my wife's G37. At 100k miles using napa full synthetic 5w30 changing every 5k. You can barely see the oil on the dip stick,it's that clean! Never have had to add any between oil changes. The motor runs better everyday I drive it. But it's not a turbo like these. I think people over kill this discussion. Don't use the lowest grade filter and change 5k with a decent synthetic religiously. It will last longer than you will want the car. End of a beat up discussion. God Bless!
I don't agree with your reasoning esp. for out of warranty cars. As you show Mazda filter valve and filter media are identical to what Subaru has. Besides, Mazda filter has more surface area and flows better ( more material and more holes in the center part) - what not to like?
If you have a car with a warranty, no dealership in the US can void your warranty for running a non-OEM anything - air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, valve springs, pistons, rods, crank, head gaskets, headlight bulb, etc... The Magnuson Moss Warranty act from 1975 covers all consumers in this regard allowing you to run any non-OEM part you wish. If it were not for that, then your warranty could be voided for running non-OEM windshield wiper blades, regardless of the fact that they have zero impact over any other portion of the vehicle. Your warranty can be voided if you crank up boost to 30psi (way beyond factory spec) and destroy your ringlands or if you take your car to the track and cause an oil starvation situation (ie. up near redline during hard cornering where the oil moves away from the oil pickup). I do wish that more manufacturers would present the results of the filtration tests, as those are absolutely critical. I'd sooner not run an OEM filter if it was 90% efficient at 30 microns, when I could get a non-OEM filter that is 99% efficient at 20 microns, as that extra material trapped in the media means less engine damage over time. And... Why does Subaru make more than 1 oil pan per engine model? Seriously, just put the top of the line (ie. STi) oil pan on every engine that it would fit on. You're giving your customers a better product and greater oil control, which means longer engine life.
I feel like this video should be 10 years old, because that's when the use of these on an EJ was considered better.. many many years before the whole "white filter replacement" was a topic of discussion. Ran the Mazda filter and Rotella T6 5W-40 on a hybrid built EJ25/EJ20 for years without issues. We knew way back then the bypass valve was rated for the same pressure which was in part why we ran them.😂
Thanks for the comment. It does look like Subaru is using them again, but I believe the filters are being made in Indonesia, not Japan, and have different internals. It is something that we are going to have to explore. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
I've been running the rx8 filter since before the OG subaru tokyo roki filter was discontinued. The bypass valve pressure is why that filter was chosen in the first place. I knew they were supposed to be the same but it's cool to see some data confirming it. I've never actually blown a subaru motor but the current build was done in 2017 and has done loads of track work/timeattack/autox/hillclimb and daily. No issues as far as the filter is concerned. One of the bigger deals for me was that, being in canada, subaru dealerships weren't/aren't that common here and the og tokyo roki filter was like $25-30 each if i could even find them. Mazda dealership a few min from my house was originally selling them for $6 each back in late 2000's and now they're hovering around $10. Making it one of the cheapest options for someone in Canada beyond the absolute cheapest autoparts store filters and still way cheaper than the TR subaru filters. And for a modified/built/no warranty car, I don't really care what mazda or subaru say about it. It's on me no matter what if it blows up. Save a few bucks for basically the same thing and I change the oil more frequently running e85 with crank case venting to atmosphere while on track. With that in mind I would always follow the recommendations of the engine builder if you're not doing it yourself.
Flatiron just be honest. You’ve used this filter. And if your EJ is out of warranty. It’s a great filter next to aftermarket filters most grab anyways with a warranty.
Should have throw in mitsubishi md135737 filter in comparison as well.. 😅 In my locals we use mitsubishi/proton 🇲🇾 md135737 filter more than the mazda because it was the easiest to source than the mazda filter... Even often can be found at gas station counter (which usually didnt have alot of car parts sold at all)
Do you happen to have an engine where you can test the engine oil pressure differences between the two filters given all the other data is showing they are relatively the same.
Thanks for your question. To a certain extent, we do. But we have been starting to talk about other ways that we might be able to test a filter. It is still a ways off, but we are giving it some thought. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
“Mazda isn’t gonna help you out if you have engine damage while running their filter”… My car is about to turn 20 and has about 170k miles. Nobody is gonna warrantee it. A warrantee is great, but I’d rather have a quality product at a good price than the worlds best warrantee on a crappy product. This sure looks like the Mazda filter is a comparable product to the “good” Subaru filter
Hey guys! I'm doing a coolant flush and radiator upgrade on my 2015 impreza. Should I try to flush some of the old coolant (95k mi original coolant) out or just swap and bleed? I was thinking if I aim the upper hose into a drain bucket and have a funnel filled on the radiator and start it up for a second with someone helping I could flush out some. Lmao
I think the only issue here is he is saying he cannot recommend using the Mazda filter on your Subaru if your car is still under Subaru warranty. If something happens you'll just end up in a mess in having to argue your claim. If your Subaru is out of warranty I see no reason why you cannot use it
Very interesting. Thanks for the walkthrough. I'm very interested to see how this compares to the JDM STI filter, I've been running this filter for about 3 years on both of my daily 04 Forester XT's without any issues that I'm aware of.
Mr suburu1387 does a excellent oil filter comparison video. He has every filter for a subaru including this one. Except for the new RCM filters.
That is next on the list :-) Stay Tuned. We are quite curious as well.
The brand on the package isn't what counts. We don't have Purolator branded cars or engines either.
Interesting point for sure.
Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
brother, dont play with my emotions man... LOL... that intro to not recommend it made my heart sink.... then by the end i was like... its fineeeee.... if the price was reasonable on subaru filters, i would run them... but paying double for the subaru filters is disgusting. thanks for the vid !!
Ha! Sorry to do that to you.
Fwiw, we have the Subaru Tokyo Roki's for a good price I think:

@@FlatironsTuning that price per filter is good... but the shipping kills it... to be fair thats the best price ive seem with shipping but... im getting the mazda filters for 14 bucks shipped on that "jungle website"
Cant wait to see the tuner hi spec filter next great content
Thanks! it is in the works now.

been using rx8 wix filter for 5 years no issues
my Subaru legacy has the ring of fire with exhaust pipe y around the filter so I figure the engineers made the filter shorter so it would not get baked by the heat of the exhaust but in aftermarket filters my daughters Honda civic has a longer version of same size filter because nothing is near the filter so there may be clearance reasons for the shorter can size.
I've been using Honda K20 filters on my Sti's for 5years now... never blown out 😅 I guess I'm stocking on Mazda's in case no Honda's 😂
You need to do the filters we can get with ease here in the US... K&N, Purolator pure one gold, Mobil 1, Amsoil, and Royal purple. Keeping in mind they are synthetic media NOT paper media like the stock/oem filters are. (better flow, better filtration, designed with higher end race oils in mind)
As example I do not run a paper filter or a 'oem' filter, ever. I find they just don't hold up as well to higher pressures (from high flow pumps) and seem to just do a poorer job compared to the above list.
I also would like to see them do a test with more common oil filters out there at parts stores.
Nice! Thanks for the comment and the information.

Love these comparisons! More of these!
Thanks for watching. Lots more in store :-)

In Australia the Mazda RX8 Tokyo Roki is twice the price of the Subaru Tokyo Roki, so it’s an exercise of complete pointlessness to run the Mazda filter.
Kinda off topic, your views on running a oil filter relocation kit and a larger oil filter?
You certainly could work. I'd just want to look at oil pressure to the block before and after to make sure that it wasn't changed.
Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
Might also find that the Mazda filter interferes with aftermarket exhaust headers because of its height.
That is a good point.
Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.

It most definitely does if you're running the factory oil cooler (oil temp equalizer 😂)
God Bless!
A great video. I own a 2020 STI. I wonder what Oil filter Irvine Subaru uses on my Bluebaru. Sibies forever guys and gals.
We knew way back then the bypass valve was rated for the same pressure which was in part why we ran them.😂
Yep been doing this for 13 years
I just run the k&n hp1004 on my FB25
Just picked one up to try.. paid $10.50. Ordered 4 on the web for $34 dollars. Been using denso
Can test the spring pressure on the three royal purple filters?
That isn't on our agenda currently, but I'll keep it in mind.
Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
Mute point now as Tokyo Roki is the supplier for the US domestic filters again.
Thanks for the comment. It does look like Subaru is using them again, but I believe the filters are being made in Indonesia, not Japan, and have different internals.
It is something that we are going to have to explore.
Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
True, but one of the new USDM shorter filters has the same part number as Tokyo Roki JDM filter.
I do not know any Subaru EJ owner that is NOT using a RX8 Filter.
In my locals we use mitsubishi/proton 🇲🇾 md135737 filter more than the mazda because it was the easiest to source than the mazda filter...
Even often can be found at gas station counter (which usually didnt have alot of car parts sold at all)
The only potential issue would be the bypass valve rating.
Lmao
What’s the Mazda part number? for an EJ25 application
Once again, we need MR Subaru to set the record straight on all things Subaru!
I think the only issue here is he is saying he cannot recommend using the Mazda filter on your Subaru if your car is still under Subaru warranty. If something happens you'll just end up in a mess in having to argue your claim. If your Subaru is out of warranty I see no reason why you cannot use it
From what I heard, the same manufacturer makes both filters. Not sure the same design.
Are you not from the US? Manganson Moss Act…
Way better filter than the Subaru USA fram garbage, also, who has a warranty lol
I wonder if Mazda guys are putting Subaru filters on their cars lol
Lol! We can hope that they chime in to let us know :-)
Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
do wix filter?
I had to take a double take did you say scuttlebutt ????? @ 2:02 were you raised by Subbies or sailors ???
not the sam filters the Mazda has a PSI for the bipass at 8-11 pounds where as the toyko roki is at 21-27 psi.
Very interesting. Thanks for the walkthrough. I noticed in the BRZ New Car Information PDF that they state that the reduced height filter was selected for pedestrian safety: drive.google.com/file/d/1TQxyKG-RFjGq78lsoz3ZdpqvTF8Hh3rU/view
Some of my friends have been using the FA20D filter to try and reverse that surface area loss, but this is an interesting alternative.
"noticed in the BRZ New Car Information PDF that they state that the reduced height filter was selected for pedestrian safety" 😂 Oh, wow.
