GOLF GRIP - THIS PROBLEM LOSES POWER AND CONSISTENCY

  • The golf grip affects your backswing, wrist hinge, clubface, lag, impact etc. Here's a grip problem I see countless students doing which is really costing them power and consistency.
    You lose power and consistency if the placement of the right hand grip is wrong because you will either tighten your wrists as you set the top of the backswing or the club will wiggle around causing inconsistencies in ball striking.
    Watch this tip and follow along as I show you the perfect placement of the right hand golf grip on the club and how it should be cradling the club at top of the backswing.
    The golf grip can be tricky because it's uncomfortable when you first try it. If I can explain why you need to learn this grip and it make sense then hopefully you'll keep doing it. If so, you'll get more power and consistency in your shots.

    Once again Paul, “Thank You!” I have struggled over the years - taking lessons, watching videos, etc., yet always missing some small piece of the puzzle. You consistently help with all of your video instructions. After watching your Neutral Grip and club face alignment instructions and this one devoted to the right hand grip, I am on the right track. This year has seen a huge change in my ability, confidence and score, mostly due to your easy to understand instructions!
    I’m a huge fan! Thanks!

      Excellent! You need to see the pieces and how the fit into the big picture. If you don't get it you will never do it because you don't see the importance however small that piece is. Glad you are working on it.

    • @dstotyn1029

      Yes, and you are a master of pointing out each piece, no matter how subtle, but all important.

      The golf swing is indeed a puzzle, and the pieces if viewed to soon dont seem to fit. The pieces need to come in some order is what i have learned over the years. For me the consistent backswing, leading to a consistent inside to outside downswing was key so then I was able to adjust ball positioning and setup so the consistent swing works best. Noting of course there are at more than a couple of different variations of the setup and swing for; Driver, woods/long irons, mid/short irons, wedges, bunker shot, chip shot, flop shot, pitch shot, half swing and 3/4 swing. There may be more but these are what Ive worked hard to get a handle on (no pun intended) and which I am working hard to master. What an AMAZING game. So mental in so many way. Success always! Dr D

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure. Too many people want to work on everything all at once and hit every shot perfectly. You work on one piece that doesn't mean you are going to hit great shots. Yes, there are a few set up changes but don't feel you are doing totally different swings. The movement is basically the same allowing the length of club to change it automatically. Don't forget the follow through. This is the most important piece of all.

    I have my 5 top training videos from Paul and this is number 1. I can’t tell you enough on how Paul fixed my game just by going back to the basics which helped me identify the mistake I had picked up which threw my game way off. In my opinion Paul is the best online instructor on the net. It was tips from other videos that destroyed my swing and confidence of striking the ball that I had built since I was 18 to the point of walking away and then I found Paul, I watched one video and it got me striking the ball again, so then watched another video which led to another video. I cannot express enough the gratitude I have and belief for Paul. The only thing I regret is that I don’t live in Las Vegas to thank him in person. Make sure you all like and subscribe to Paul’s videos especially if you’re in your mid-40s to your mid 50s I’m hitting the ball finally again like I did when I was 30.

      This is a big one for sure. Can't believe so many people do not do the grip right. It all starts with the grip and you need to be constantly checking it. It's easy to move to a strong position. Thank you for the support. I need all the help I can get spreading the word. So many people out there need help. They just need to understand it, get used too a few new feelings and a little work. Just loosening up alone should get anyone hitting some better shots. I will keep doing what I do and one day everyone will want to do it.

      Because I actually make people better and have done so since 1991. I give you the answers because no one could answer my questions when I was learning it. I also know my students. In no way is the average person going to understand or learn complex moves. It has to be simple. If you understand what to do in the sense you see how it fits into the big picture. I make it simple enough for you to actually do it. Then you will at least try it. If I can get you to see the result withing about a bucket of balls then you will keep doing it (I hope). Thanks for the support.

    I have been watching your swing videos and this grip video is the perfect compliment to facilitate the proper swing. Being an epic slicer of the ball, I decided to give this a try expecting a train wreck. This makes way too much sense. I am pleased to report that this is a game changer. It not only improved my distances and my dispersions, but I can tell a significant difference on the impact it has had on this 68 year old body. It may not sound sexy but this is the most ergonomic golf swing I've found so far.

    I’m a little confused because A LOT of TH-cam golf and a couple of lessons I’ve had have said to use a strong grip showing three knuckles on the the front hand and both ‘V’s’ pointed at the back shoulder. You’re demonstrating with an iron and most of the strong recommendations I think are for driver. Is there a difference? Great video though, Paul. As many others said your explanations are very thorough.

    Paul, THANK YOU for this critical tip. I am an avid golfer, 72 years old with a mid-5 GHIN index. I have been experimenting with my grip (and takeaway) for quite some time and your helpful insight into "the question mark" grip has been a game changer for me. The club doesn't "slip" out of position at the top of my backswing anymore. This had led to missed shots, both left and right (!), but using "the question mark" grip the club stays where it's supposed to. Today I hit all 14 fairways and shot 1 over par 73. Again, THANK YOU! By the way, I've been using "the question mark" for about 2-3 rounds now. It felt funny at first, but now it feels GREAT and I have confidence in the outcome. Bravo!

    Hi Paul, i am a Beginner with 57 years. I already bought the Body Swing course. I don't have a Problem with the bottom hand but with the top one.
    In no one of your tips i can see the grip inside the top hand look like.
    Do you have a Video showing this or can you send me a picture?
    I have the grip very week under my thumb ball. All my Friends telling me that is wrong.
    I am very sad currently. I can hit my Irons only doing half wings without any leg. Adding leg all my balls slicing or shanking 😢

    I watched this two years ago and it was helpful then. Your videos are also worth revisiting, Paul, as I did today after a not-great ball striking round yesterday.
    I think that I have been opening the gap between my right thumb and forefinger too much, allowing the club to drop into that "gap". Evidence.... there is callusing and irritation along the thumb side of my forefinger and on the side of my thumb knuckle, mostly after bad rounds.
    Closing the vee there seems to be key to preventing that. Hogan's book, Five Lessons even has an illustration calling for "pressure" or pressing the right thumb and forefinger together, as you do at 5:16. It's easy to forget things. Thanks again. You are helping me whittle my handicap down, even in the off season up here in the PNW.

    I really enjoy the way you share the information about the golf swing. I was doing most of these things up until the last couple of years and started to tinker with my swing. I was a +1.5 golfer and hitting the ball constantly straight and fairly long. Until I tried to make it even longer. I began to try and hit the ball harder as you describe sometimes. Before I was just simply swinging relaxed and swinging through impact. I had slowly increased to a stronger grip instead of my old grip which is the grip you promote. I have gone back to what was working after coming across you videos and after changing my grip back to the old grip I had when I was playing solid golf. Thanks for the simple manner you use to explain the swing. A light came on literally after just a couple of swings on the range after your video on the grip! Love the videos. Thanks Kerry

      I fell down the distance rabbit hole too. Not fun. Need to be content with what you've got. Long and straight is all you need. So anywhere around 270 - 300 down the middle. More is fun but it will get you in trouble.

    I've watched a plethora of golf instruction videos. This was one that I didn't think that would change my game so much but it did. After an in person video swing analysis, the instructor told me that my right hand opens at the top of if my swing. Taking that to the practice range and course didn't change a whole lot. Total inconsistency but still shot 94.
    After watching Paul's neutral grip videos and lastly, this one. He really promotes the neutral grip where, I always had a slightly strong grip with 3 knucks showing.
    The left hand is important, but who knew how important the right hand grip was as well. My right index finger now acts like a trigger to get acceleration through the ball and my swing speeds are now 106 -113 and my driver yardage is consistent with 267-276 yds and straight!
    When I took this new found ability to the irons, the very first strike with my 7 iron was 181 yds. Good God almighty! The best I've ever had was 140 yds from my 7i.
    Grip grip grip!!!! The basis of everything a good swing is.
    Thanks so much Paul, you've made my game so much more enjoyable.😊

    Dear Paul, this tip is absolutely excellent. Ive done some testing on my simulator and i can say for certain this is the reason why some of my shots were drawing to soon/much in the ball flight since the face tends to close a bit to much during the downswing. This pinch technique is a perfect way to keep the release during the downswing as consistent as possible. Thank you!

      So glad you found me and are working on it. You certainly need a pain-free swing. i have helped countless people in the past play pain free. A few main key would be a taller setup meaning you are not all bent over. Using the legs and hips and not hitting with arms. Hit with arms and you won't use your body plus you will be doing a violent movement with your muscles locked up. Watch how little effort I put into these shots. If I can do it you can do it and as you see this swing will never hurt:

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  ปีที่แล้ว

      Learning the golf swing can create all sorts of pain in the beginning. As for the grip you need to do the proper grip. Once you get the grip then you need loose wrists to allow the club to hinge and rehinge. Right now, I would think you are just grabbing on tight which is locking your wrists. If you hit a ball off center it creates shock which twists the club in your hands cause the shock has to be absorbed somewhere. So it's a secure grip with loose wrists. Also, better contact of course creates less shock/twisting. Follow these tips:
      th-cam.com/video/jQZLp8bF-Ww/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/Z8K3Gctkz7A/w-d-xo.html
      Then I usually start beginners with these:

      th-cam.com/video/M868QsTlGt4/w-d-xo.html
      Body: th-cam.com/video/RdphthCQ9VM/w-d-xo.html
      You can also do this to get the shape or movement of the swing super fast: th-cam.com/video/gTLvRsjwfIM/w-d-xo.html
      Just realize you are not hitting anything. You are learning a movement. Arms and wrists are loose. You are powering it with the legs and hips. In other words this is leg press not bench press.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you found this tip. This really helps to unlock the wrists. Get them unlocked and you get so much more power. If you have been doing the interlock for while and you like it then keep doing it. I do teach an overlap because it allows you to hold it in all fingers of the weaker hand while removing one finger of your stronger hand. So if the person was a newer golfer or not placing the interlock on properly then I would switch to the overlap. The problem is people want to wedge that pinky in for a secure position but this backs off the right hand putting the thumb down the grip. You might want to watch this:

    About the grip and this type swing with the free wrist hinge, would perhaps larger grips create more easy of grip/less pressure? Would it restrict the wrists in the release? I think the right hand is hard to get into that spot because standard grips are perhaps too smooth for the mid to high handicappers

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Grips would be based on finger size. Larger hands would need mid size grips. I used standard with 2 wraps. The size of the grip has no affect with turning the arms off. Just realize that the wider the grip the slower the hand action.

    I think Ben Hogan saying pressure in the middle two fingers is also key. There can be a tendency for us to get that nice cradle position but then start making the pressure point be in thumb and forefinger, kind of "pincing" it. IMO a bad move. Middle two fingers of this hand keeps everything freer. Thumb just nicely cradling. So enjoying your content. You have a gift for this training and explaining the mechanics of why. My brain requires the reason, not just do this. Thank you.

      Exactly. You need to know "why." You know that and you will do it. Glad you like it.

    Wow this feels so much better. I have just been out in the yard to practice and this slight change in my thumb position feels a lot more comfortable and controlled at the top of the backswing. I thought my grip was good but I had a large gap between my thumb and forefinger. I can‘t wait to try this tomorrow at the range before playing a round. A timely reminder Paul, to check and recheck the seemingly small details. Thanks.

    Hey Paul, i typically use the baseball grip (where all my fingers are connected no gap) because i felt like the pinky overlap started to cause some pain. Wanted to know your opinion on if i can still adopt this grip idea with the baseball style grip. Also would you happen to have an actual overlap grip video? Maybe im doing something wrong and thats why ive been avoiding that style grip. Thanks!

      If you do the baseball grip you cannot sacrifice the position of the bottom hand. Most who do the 10 finger back this hand off into a strong position so they get hitting with the arms. Here is my grip video:
      th-cam.com/video/jQZLp8bF-Ww/w-d-xo.html
      Just follow along and if you do the 10 finger recognize the position of my bottom hand and copy it the best you can.

    Love the video, but who do I believe. Shaun Clement encourages a very strong grip with huge lag to keep the face straight at impact. I'm confused...

      Thanks. Different teachers see the swing differently. Here's how you decide: Take a 7 iron and 10 balls. Tee it up the balls about 1/2" to make it easier. You do a strong grip but keep your wrists super loose as you hit them. After that, it will become clear who to follow.

    Hi Paul, great video! How does grip size affect ability to have the correct grip? I switched to thicker grips because of popular trends. It feels good but Im having trouble trying to use the neutral grip. I cannot get the 2 vees parallel.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, if they are too big it will be harder. The problem with large grips is that it slows down your hand action through impact. I tried jumbos and couldn't square the face at all. This is why I only recommend mid size unless the person has arthritis and can't use any other grip. You are going to have to do your best to hold the club in the fingers of the right hand and work it on top. If not it is strong. If you have loose wrists with a strong grip you will hook it so play a draw if you want to keep that grip.

    This is a great video. I really appreciate the POV perspective looking down on your own hands. That's what I see when I look at my hands. Very very helpful. Thank you thank you thank you!

    I was just at the driving range and the pro instructor there told me to line up my thumbs and I told him I couldn't hinge like that. I knew he was wrong. I never even asked him for help.

    Good, useful camera angle. This video, with “feel the heel”, has solved a lot of my problems. And my golf swing, too.

      Glad it helped. I thought this would show it clearly to people. It has helped a lot of people. Amazing how many people are not doing the grip right.

    As you have said before, sometimes it's the little things. I was so off on how I placed the lower hand on the club and what a difference maker. I was not starting low hand placement enough in my fingers, nor making the "question mark". This lead to regripping and other issues. Had my best range session in a long time by making this supple grip change. Funny I thought I was doing it right as it looked decent. Wrong! That picture in Hogan's Five Lessons showing pressure points makes total sense now. Thanks again.

      @paulwilsongolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very good. Yes, the little things matter a lot. This is vital and Hogan showed it. He was weak in this hand as his V was at his nose but it did get the face open and stop his hooks. This would be his secret in my opinion. Face was open at the top relative to the flat backswing. For you, be sure to have the proper placement and keep checking it ... forever.

    Will this help with ball striking? I’m having trouble hitting good shots on the course. I can hit so good on the range and but play so bad at the course. I’m like the apposite. Is there a way you make make a video on how to translate range to course from ball striking?

      Well fixing one thing may not instantly make you great on the course. If you read the comments this tip has helped hundreds of people. Need to loosen the wrists. This would be a good start.

    I tried your grip. I like your grip. Let's see how it does on the course.
    The sun is breaking out starting tomorrow. Thanks for putting this up.

    Hi Paul, is thr any exercise for body swing? As I am very uncomfortable when I try to hit the ball from driver. I feel like as I have not enough power to hit the ball.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  ปีที่แล้ว

      You get the power through loose wrists then firing the legs and hips very quickly. If you are not moving fast enough or have tight wrists you will not hit it anywhere.
