    Awesome vid. Reminds me of learning to fly a helicopter. My instructor would often get me to fly out to the ‘H’ which was in the centre of a big circle of mowed grass in the middle of the airfield and fly around it with the nose of the aircraft pointing inwards. Then he’d make me switch up to hovering the other way and flying with the tail facing the middle of the circle. This was all made a bit more challenging by the fact that the wind would push you around quite a bit and any corrective input on the controls always required a counter input on the other two controls. As you mentioned the trick was to make very small inputs which required smaller corrections.

    Greetings, Cmdr. Hobbs!
    Finally I have to gratulate to this marvelous FAOff-Training-Series! You are my flight-instructor, who really tought me how to fly without flight assist and it really works! Really great work!
    Everytime, someone in my squadron asks me, how I managed to fly without FA, I recommend your video-series. So far no complains came back. ;)
    Thank you so much for introducing us into the "Magic of FAOff"!!! A totally new and natural flight-experience!

    Learning FA off is difficult but it's nice when it "clicks" in your head. I had a few moments like that. I went from tumbling through space, to tumbling in space but in the right direction, to over controlling so it looked like a mad drunk person trying to dock, to finally realizing small corrections and just relaxing on the controls overall made for a swan like grace.

    This is very helpful. The notion of divorcing oneself from the notion that where the ship points is where one is going is one of the most useful I've heard so far. Subscribed on the basis of this video alone. :)

    Hey man I know this is two years old and all but I have just returned to the game after four years and have been using your training. This type of flying has changed the feel of this game entirely and I feel Way more in tune with my ships in just the past week of running these early exercises. I even started filming some of my training. I sure do bounce off the station a lot at first but I can feel certain skills melting into intuition. Thanks for this.

    This is the first flight video I've seen that actually offered techniques for practicing. Thanks for that. I can't try it until I get a new joystick though. My current one is soy-based. By which I mean it's hyper-sensitive and leans to the left.

    i may not ever be an FA off player 100% of the time like you but i do need to learn FA off for fighting at least. thargoids are very difficult to hit because in FA off my aiming skills are garbage especially when trying to snipe a thargon swarm from 4KM away. Your excercise where we had to orbit the station.... yeah i watched that thinking psht that looks easy AF... nope... nope not easy at all. it was actually very difficult. its good to now have a training excercise to do each day that can help me. after doing that for about 30 minutes i stopped and went mining in my anaconda flipped my FA off and i was really really very surprised at how much more control i had over my ship. im not a complete novice at FA off but im hardly in the realm of good with it either. i look forward to seeing the rest of your videos. thank you for taking the time to post these lessons. o7

    This is excellent. Not sure I'm ready for this yet, but I have a feeling this is how these big fat ships are suddenly flipping over and destroying me when I think I've got them by the tail and just going to whittle them down from behind until they're a lump of coal. Or a cloud of mist. Or whatever it is that I actually turn into the moment they flip that big fat thing over and shoot me in the face point blank with 8 hardpoints at the same time.

    At last, I'm diving into flight assist off and enjoying it so far :) Still a total newbie as I'm still training on this video's exercices, but just being able to put your ship nose in a different direction than your vector is fun and feels like opening a world of possibilities.
    I had no problem with the asteroid field exercise as it only involves thrusters, but I struggle with the tethering exercise. I can tether to the ring but i'm constantly drifting left and right, I can correct my position for a while but can't keep a constant straight line like you do. Maybe it has to do with my joystick that has a high sensitivity? I will try to lower it and see if it helps. EDIT: I chose the lowest sensitivity profile and it's better, still drifting a tiny bit left and right but way more manageable.
    Thanks again for your videos, keep them coming!

    I never actually played this game, but am really interested. I'm guessing "flight assist off" is the same as turning off inertia dampening in space engineers? as in it doesn't automatically kill lateral velocity if you press forward? That sounds like a lot of fun, once I have some time to spare, I definitely need to get into this game.

    So, I tried the very 1st exercise and with the Xbox pad is a nightmare... there was not even 1 micro-second where I was steady, with fixed point in front of the ship. The ship was going in all directions, even trying the minimal corrections I was never able to have it doing what I wanted. I was about to throw the controller against my TV at least 3 times... so I decided that FAOFF is not for me.. I leave this to those with better reflexes/control /controllers than me :)
    For me you're the equivalent of "Mozart" of the FAOFF :). My respect!!!

    Very nice prepared video and thanks for the clear voice. I use keyboard and mouse and currently my control are set as A/D Roll, W/S Vertical Thrust, Q/E yaw and space to pitch, and my mouse is set to pitch on y axis and yaw on x axis. I was wandering if you can recommend any set of control for beginners where we can further adjust it to our taste.

    Hi, great video, I am a relatively new commander, I liked flying flight assist off better and found it more rewarding and realistic, but I found a lot of people online saying it’s just for combat in certain circumstances and not to use it all the time so I’m glad I found this video as it’s directing me in something I enjoyed more anyways. I had one question, on the final exercise you mentioned using your lateral thrust as well to direct yourself through the asteroid field. As I think you mentioned you use a game pad, what set up do you use? What input do you set for lateral thrust as it is off by default on my controller settings.

    • @arkirron7172

    I just don't get this.
    1. Throttle controls are analogue as far as I can see with no way to change to digital.
    2. I just zoom away from the station when trying to tether.
    3. I can't tether with FA on..........
    But, I found just flying around the station to be of value. It's big so you see from a distance thus providing a reference point and there is little danger of collision.
    Mind the flying through the ring exercise was fun and I had some success :) It also gave plenty of opportunity to practise stabilising (after crashing).
    However, I do have a question. I noted a while ago that when you boost the nose wanders - even when I am sure that everything is in "neutral" before the boost. Why is this?

    I've been trying this for a week and can't get it it. My ship seems to go wherever it wants and I'm not sure when or for how long I'm supposed to fire a thruster. My speed always seems to be flat out and half the time I don't know if I'm going forwards or backward. As for tethering I'm lucky if I get the ship to even point at anything that I want it to. Obviously I'm doing it wrong but I don't know exactly what I'm doing wrong. Your video doesn't actually say what to do.

    This is great advice- only one question: whenever I engage in Flight Off maneuvers, I find that my control starts to become pretty shaky. Could it be my stick being too sticky (no pun intended!)? Or do I need to lower some sensitivity settings in the controls?

    So I’m trying to learn this on the PS4 version of the game, and I had a question related to ship controls. I’m not sure if this is also the case on PC, but on the PS4 you have two different control configurations - “standard” and “alternate”. You can alternate between these two configurations by pressing a button on the controller. In the “alternate” configuration, you have no yaw control over your nose attitude, and instead are able to “strafe” your ship from side to side. Which control configuration would you recommend to be the primary one for flight assist off, and which one should we use for this excersizs?

    • @moxenwolf1020
      @moxenwolf1020  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is an excellent question and thank you for illuminating that aspect of the ps4 version of the game. I've only tried it with a controller mapped and plugged into my PC just to see how it was. I will do some research on this. Thank you again!

  • @andrewbailey7999
    @andrewbailey7999 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would try this but unfortunately there's a slight zero error on my joystick that doesn't go away even when I set up dead zones or calibrate the joystick. It would make permanent FA off really difficult. As it is though, I regularly toggle flight assist off during normal flying. It's very useful for coasting around stations and always ending up facing the entrance, or for quick flips and drifting in combat

    Hello, I just found this video and am rather excited to start learning how to be a better pilot. I have been playing Elite Dangerous for quite awhile. I am Elite in Exploration and just hit Elite in Trade. But, very low in my rank in Combat. I would like to learn to fly my ship and do alright in combat. I am an old fart who loves space and any kind of space sim. I am curious, is Newton's Gambit still a thing? Is the group still active? And, are you still looking for new people to possibly tutor? I have played almost exclusively solo because I know I'm not a match for anyone out there with even the slightest skill in combat. But, maybe if I can learn to fly my ship with skill, or at least make some friends in game, I can come out of hiding and play in Open Space.
    Please let me know!

      Making me rethink my bindings. Having played only just under 1000hrs, I've been wanting to go FAO for some time. I've only gotten to landing on some low G planets, but I still use FA on to get it stabilized most times. I also would do FAoff in asteroid rings to search for mother lodes because I could boost then swing my ship around in several directions while scanning to find as many as possible in the time I was looking. But I would cheat by gliding just above or below the plane of the belt so I wouldn't have to dodge all those nasty rocks.
      Like I said I will have to rethink some bindings because my head look analogue is the same as my thruster lateral/vertical (no track IR). I do have another analogue that only has thrust forward and back on it that I can swap for head-look and just use the other analogue for thrust lateral/vertical which in turn I can just use the main throttle for thrust forward/back like I have it set for anyway, I just use the analogue during landing in stations because it always returns to zero. I'm going to start practicing more.

      ...And this is what I thought I would be doing when I first got this game. I fully intended to go FAoff right away thinking it wouldn't be that hard... Boy was I wrong. Gonna get back into it

    • @XxsteamerxX
      @XxsteamerxX 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Been a little over a month and I am proud to say that I am 99.89% FA Off. It was very hard at first but muscle memory kicks in after a while and my brain has adjusted to making small adjustments instead of constantly over correcting.
      I don't think I even went through all of your proficiency before I really got the hang of it. I flew to San Tu, bought a Sidewinder and crashed around a bit until I started to get nausious. I started to dream in FA Off. So I took about a week off. When I came back to it and started to just mine and collect mats for engineering an exploring Phantom I realized that I was already doing it.
      I'm landing better... even on a 1.3G planet that I didn't take the time to take note of. I kissed the ground, recovered and landed with 11% hull. THAT'S A WIN. I'm still not nearly as smooth as our sensei here. But the only time I turn it on is when collecting mats from High emissions drop zones (dropping the session and rejoining brings you back in FA On. I found it faster to just leave it until that site times out.)

    • @XxsteamerxX
      @XxsteamerxX 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My re-binding worked like a charm. Much better than before. The throw on the Virpil throttle is larger than all the other throttles I had before, and I have the controls chair mounted instead of desk mounted so I decided to go throttle forward and reverse instead of forward only using a button option to switch to reverse. This gives me only half the range and I can still use all the buttons and switches comfortably on the throttle.

  • @TheGodEmperorOfMankind_
    @TheGodEmperorOfMankind_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    Man you make it seem so simple, following the outer ring of the station I always drift away then I over correct and smack on the station.
    *EDIT:* After sticking with it for a few days I am starting to get the hang of it, I found that flying the length of the station and going between the struts (yes the space is massive between them) makes it more fun after you get bored of the tethering exercises and if you smack against the station and spin around it's good practice for regaining control. Also shows you how important lateral/vertical thrusters are

      That's what I found. When I got bored with the exercises, I just went and did things I needed to do like mine for a mission or engineer a ship and go to different planets trying to land. After, I would fly nap of the earth for a while and through canyons before taking off back up into space. Couple times I boosted straight into the surface to go KaBlammo but it taught me my limits. Combat is infintely better, even though I don't prefer combat, but I found I don't lose the ship from my sights anymore.

    • @drogenfeld
      @drogenfeld 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I actually initially wanted to learn it, but on mouse and keyboard, using analogue controls is just not nearly possible. That is what flight assist is for, it simulates analogue controls. You can't give half thrust with a yes or no key.

    • @joesilver75
      @joesilver75 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@drogenfeld I've bought a H.O.T.A.S. as I thought it would be ideal for mastering FA OFF. Well, for what I've seen so far, I don't think it makes it any easier. In fact, the micro-corrections are somewhat more complicated, because the analog controller is designed for continuous, incremental inputs, whilst FA OFF requires digital, short impulse corrections. Microcorrecting with the joystick means that you have to exercise the smallest amount of movement (whether for pitch, roll, or yaw) allowed by the joystick, which is much less easier to obtain than with a key pressure. By pressing a key (or a button) you cannot fail. With the joystick, you must win the spring resistance each time you try to produce a small impulse, which often results in a larger correction than needed.
      But it's also possible that I'm a completely rubbish pilot...

    • @drogenfeld
      @drogenfeld 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joesilver75 The point I am making is this: A button can only do on or off. You need to hit the right button the correct amount of times at the right timings. A joystick has analogue axis, which enables you to continuously adjust the trajectory of your ship without having to button smash your thruster controls and hope it'll fly the way you want. You can't do microadjustments with a on and off switch, as you always give full power. Imagine driving your car like that, your gas pedal, brake and steering are just a switch. It'd be a bumpy and stressful ride.

    • @joesilver75
      @joesilver75 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@drogenfeld Sure, but driving a car is different from flying a starship in low gravity and virtually zero air drag. On the road you must keep pushing the pedal to keep the same speed, otherwise your car will slow down and eventually stop. Also steering a car is more akin to yawing in FA mode (you keep the rotating the joystick or you will stop spinning) than with FA off, where a small digital micropush will make your ship spin forever. You really need to give frequent small microadjustments to use FA off in ED, and analog controls do not help because they are meant for gradual variations rather than small, short pushes. I'm having a hard time with my joystick, much harder than with a steam controller! I could reduce the sensitivity, but that would mean that I should make large movements to get very small corrections. And buttons are definitely better for that.

    • @drogenfeld
      @drogenfeld 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joesilver75 Once you can perfectly fly FA OFF with your keyboard, then talk about this again. Until you do, I'm not interested in pointless discussions such as this and you talking about how a car works compared to a spaceship.

    I find picking up stuff with my cargo scoop with FA off is great practice for the fine inputs needed for such flying. I can't do it in combat yet, but I can reliably dock at a spinning station without much difficulty.
    I use a dual joystick with pedals setup. Configuring the toe brakes for "Flight Thrust" allows me to make small FA off inputs without moving my hand to my throttle, and having two full joysticks allows finer precision.
    I found a program called Joystick Curves, it really helps with the small inputs, and reduces overcorrection.
    It's also improved my handling of interdictions, as I tend to flail a bit during those.

    Absolutely fantastic tutorial series!
    Wish I'd found this 1700 hours (game time) ago. lol
    Curious, when changing from things like station keeping and just dodging asteroids, none of these is chasing you or firing one of many weapons at you. Are we just going to rely on the fact that during FA OFF, the ship controls are actually doing what you tell them to, instead of letting the flight control system interpret your input and making clean, sanitized movements under tight control?
    I started using a G13 game pad that has a tiny digital stick - as you say, on-off-on, no in between.
    I setup two macros to do the following;
    MACRO1:
    Switch FA OFF
    Set main thrust to zero
    Apply nose up thrust to pitch the ship "up" following my joust partner
    When my crosshairs meet his "plane" of travel
    MACRO2:
    Switch FA ON
    Set main thrust to 75%
    And hopefully end up facing my target while they perform their flip, leaving them exposed and flat faced to my crosshairs.
    Trying different things, I changed MACRO2 to set main thrust to -75%, leaving me facing my target with me flying backwards and giving me more targeting time as they restart their attack. While this improved my ability to inflict damage, it had problems. I found myself colliding with too many things killing my shields and sometimes causing fines. No "backup" monitor like cars have today. lol
    Since then, I've been through one really bad joystick (Logitech Pro) and then purchased a Turtle Beach VelocityOne FlightStick.
    The controls on this are amazing. No need to calibrate as "zero" is always "zero" and there is no slop in the stick, anywhere. It comes with a full X/Y/Z main stick that has two hats. H1 is digital H2 is analog. It also comes with two independent analog "thrust" controls and a kind of strange scroll wheel. The scroll wheel can be either digital J_13^ / J_14v or analog for flight trim. I use the right thrust control for vertical thrust with a 75% deadband. There are switches at the end of each thrust control. For the left thrust I have the top switch set to BOOST and the bottom switch set to BRAKE for the SRV
    It also comes with an adjustable control curve setting Precision / Standard /Fast for the main flight stick. I'm going to take some time getting used to it in Standard and then begin working with FA OFF and Precision mode. Oh, and no more macros for the time being.
    Wish me luck.

Today, I came across your channel and your excellent training videos! I used to play Eve and there were some great folks dedicated to training new combat players in-game but I always thought this game needs that badly. I'm a dedicated explorer (for past 4 years), half way through Pioneer rank now with the intent of picking up combat after Elite exploration rank. Your videos are so professionally narrated, succinct and eloquent. I've ALWAYS wanted to become a FAO pilot so I can't wait to employ your videos soon as I start dedicating time to combat. Cheers!
