There are a smattering of strange encoding issues in certain bits where it looks glitchy. I don't know why. Please try and ignore it. I will try and get TH-cam to replace it but I doubt they will and I don't want to re-upload it just to see the same thing. This was recorded with different cameras at different times but not shown within the review in a linear way due to the structure, as in you see 0.5 (pre-release) firmware footage then 1.0 (release) firmware footage then back to 0.5 firmware footage. It's just how it had to be structured. It won't confuse you, it was just necessary due to the way this review morphed from being a much shorter pre-release review based on having it for just 2 weeks then having to change plans when the release camera came out at the same time I gave the loan pre-release camera back! I had to get a production version of the camera to then make the review work. It worked out for the best as I really got to know the second camera I used in this review. I just wanted to point it out for one main reason and it is this; whenever you see stuff saying 1.0 firmware then the stuff you are seeing should be better mainly due to me knowing the camera much better due to having had much more time with it. For example, the introductory on-camera stuff of me in my edit suite (filmed in February with 1.0) has smoother bokeh change in the background when I move compared to my sum up in Richmond (filmed in November with 0.5) at the end despite being the same lens and f-stop. This is because I knew the settings to get smooth and consistent focus change even when really shallow and close to the lens. I spent so much time learning the autofocus during the making of this review. It's not a case of turn it on and everything is perfect. It takes skill and practice! Slower speed and not using lock-on mode, but instead a slow sensitivity yields much nice results. Lock-on sensitivity on talking heads can be too sensitive to any slight movement which causes bokeh to change too much which can be distracting. Oh and of course TH-cam has killed the image with compression. I will make some untouched footage available to download in my blog post.

Philip, thank you for continuing to bring incredible information and effort to the masses who so thoroughly appreciate the time and talent it takes to make a review. I’ve been watching you for 12 years now, and your wisdom has helped me start a fulfilling career. Good health and wishes to you brother.
Just finished watching from beginning to end. Thank you for making this movie! I’ve been highly interested in purchasing this camera. I switched from Canon DSLR’s to Sony mirrorless camera’s about 3 years ago because of watching your videos. I recently bought the FS5 mk II for my company but have been eyeing the FX9 since it started shipping. Thank you for all of the hard work you put into making this movie. 🙏🏼
My hat goes off to you bro. Serious respect for making this video. The amount of time, hard work, and dedication you put into this is mind-blowing 👏🏼👏🏼
Philip! thanks for the amazing detail you go into with this, great content for all this self isolation! I just picked up two Fx9's and have been loving them!
Incredibly well done. I'm not a videographer or filmmaker, (a mere photographer, glimpsing at video) but I'm always interested in learning about the gear and the craft. I just can't believe I was driven so much by the A/B comparisons, the beautiful demo imagery, the build-out details, the nuances of this camera and your storytelling, that I sat through a near 2 hour review! And congratulations on a stellar career.
Thanks So Much Sir Phillip, Costa Rican Filmmaker here, Jumped from Film (oldSchool), Bought the Sony F3, (ARRI Alexa came also and changed everything) but the F3 was FIRST!!!!! then Bought the Sony Fs700, then the Fs7 and just ordered my new Fx9 arriving in January 2021 by our local Sony dealer, Never Thanked you for all the Wisdom you have share with us from back on the days, can't wait to get the new camera and start shooting... Thanks again have a Great 2021, Picture is Up! from Costa Rica muchas Gracias y Pura Vida!
These where the absolute best 2 hours i ever spent on TH-cam. Philip you are truly one of the greatest contributions to the Filmmaker community. I value your work very highly and you inspire me and hopefully others to share our knowledge and create beautiful things together.
Philip, Im a long way off ever buying a camera such as this and its taken me 5 days to gradually work my way through this review but wow, so enjoyable, so watchable, so informative and very enjoyable to watch. The way you capture images and pair them with sound is so inspiring, it constantly surprises me and drives me to keep improving my own filmmaking. Bravo indeed and thank you for your continued efforts to educate, inform and entertain us all 👍
I have zero chance of owing or even having the need to use an FX9, but that doesn’t matter as I watched this video because it’s 2-hours of Philip and his masterpiece way of creating a story within a review. Breathtaking video from start to finish that had me captivated and weirdly interested in this camera after watching this movie (even though, like I said above, I’ll never own one or use one). Thanks for another incredibly put-together video, Philip. Great stuff, sir. Stay safe.
Dear Philip, I‘ve been waiting for this film quite A while... and finally..... bravo, hats of!!!!! You excelled my expectations! Thank you so much! Funny coincident, Your Review and my own fx9 came on the same day. Waited for both quite a while. Despite the fact, that I have to take care of my kids now, as all schools are closed, I could be having a lot of time to get to know the fx9, because all my jobs have been canceled or prosponed for the next weeks. 😩 but I will use that time to spend more money I guess. You made me want the sigma 105. by the way I just bought the sigma art 24-70 emount lens. Works also great with AF and gives me a nice zoom for documentary work with the beautiful shallow depth of field of 2.8 on a full frame sensor. The focus by wire is ok, the close focus on the wide end is gorgeous and the best: it is parfocal. Definitely a recommendation used either fx9. Well, I wish you and all other freelancers to stay healthy and that production brake in our business will end quite soon. Greez from Hamburg, Matthias
Thanks, Philip, for this thorough review. Such an incredible tool needs time to be reviewed properly. And I thank you for taking the time and sharing your insights with us, I enjoyed every minute of it. Luckily, I got one of the first units in my region (UAE) and with your review it gives me even more push to explore all the amazing details of the FX9. And I agree, this is one of the best cameras ever. Thanks again, take care in these crazy times and let's create some wonderful content with this camera!
I’m a year late, but I recently bought an old Sony DSR390 off eBay and have become kind of obsessed with the ENG form factor. This camera has some similarities to that and it’s interesting to hear your perspective specifically since you’ve worked with ENG cameras so much (love those old photos 😁).
Many thanks for the time and love you put into this Phillip, a top notch review. Iam lucky enough to own a FX9 and have still yet to master using the camera handheld coming from using a DSLR so iam interested in a quick workflow on how to use catalyst but the tip on having dedicated buttons between high and low ISO base rates is a great idea. Still so much to learn to get the best out of the camera but the night time footage you got of Richmond at night was just magical and makes me want to visit The White Cross next time iam in the UK. I will be definity be experimenting more with both Slog 3 and S-cinetone combined with white balance as i have yet to master this and am a big fan of gorgeous colours. Thanks again and please ignore the negative comments as they obviously have too much time on thier hands. You are a true master led by your passion for filmaking. :)
I'm just a poor videographer from the other side of the world loving this videos! Some would call it masochism, I prefer to call it entertainment. Greetings from Uruguay
I'm glad my tweet made it in (3:08)! Enjoyable video, I think it's nice to see long-form videos on TH-cam and you have a great visual style. The camera is too large and too expensive for my needs, but it is interesting to see what functionality and quality you get at the higher end.
This is one of the most incredible reviews I've ever witnessed. This was NOT easy to have done and everyone should see this! Thank you for doing this. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this Philip! I am just 30 mins in, at 05:00 AM, gonna watch the rest tomorrow. I love every shot you make, with any camera. You are a great inspirator, and a brilliant documentary maker. You have me glued to the screen. Your way of setting a mood with your shots combined with carefully picked music is pure art. In these weird times, this keeps me happy and optimistic. Peace and Love, Vincent.
Philip, capturing the ordinary and the commonplace like you have done to demonstrate here is of great value. Its nice to get the glossy commercial shots but I would hope others will be inspired to capture the natural world of humans like you have here.
Thank you so much Phillip. Now that I've acclimatized somewhat to this lockdown I can take the time to enjoy videos like these. However we all know there are no other reviews like these. Amazing stuff. I have to say I do like the colour science on this camera even more so than the FS7 which is saying something. Glad to see that you've got over the back issue that was troubling you too! Keep on rocking!
Thank you so much for making this. It was such an enjoyable watch, same as the fs7 review. There's just something special about your reviews that puts a smile on my face every time.
That autofocus is game-changing! Thanks for the monster review. This is the ultimate camera where the image overwhelms the specs. I truely hope Sony brings this Venice colour-science through to all their new cameras - so much better than their previous colour-science.
I do nothing in film industry but I really liked watching lots of shots. What a massive review, almost 2 hours. Cant imagen how long it took to make this
I'm an amateur filmmaker and I'm learning as I go. Although I'll never have the money to get one of these camera's, your videos teach me a lot about filmmaking. They are also a pleasure to watch. Thank you.
Job well done. Watching your 'movie' was very enjoyable and entertaining! It is always a pleasure to see and hear your take on all things video. I loved the many tips and insightful comments you made in and around creating videos in general. Your words on the usefulness of autofocus resonated with me the most, I could not agree more. Loved your cats!
Thank you for sharing this, Philip! I'm still not financially ready to purchase the FX9 and not sure if I ever will get it, but this video really helped me understand the camera and all its wonderful features. Thanks, again!
Brilliant and beautiful as always. About the AF, I was a little surprised how much pulsing there was during your talk around 1:41-1:43ish. Reminds me of the GH5 before firmware update. Thanks for the time. Amazing to watch👍🎥
Such an impressive work Philip ! When I saw few years ago your review of the Digital Bolex, and that one of the FS7, I never thought you could do even better work. That review was very informative for someone like me who has always shared your love for Sony cameras. I am so impressed by the beauty of the cinetone curve, and your autofocus tests were informative ! They will definitely save me a lot of time when I will rent that camera. I don't like how Native E Mount glass responds when it comes to manual focusing, but that autofocus function will make them work great. So happy about that, until now I was only using my A7RII for interviews because of this ! Wish you good luck for your future works and projects. Cheers from France !
I just finished the film on my other account (my partners) and I can’t thank you enough! I love the fact that you run these cameras hard through their full paces. I’m shopping hard for my next camera system and this helped me immensely. I nearly rented a FX9 for a job before watching this and I’m glad I went with the BMPCC 6k (it was a stock footage job). But as for a camera system I will own this gave me a real perspective on what and how I need to analyze. Thanks mucho Philip!!
Thank you so much for this gift of a video! More than a review, of course, it's a lesson in artistry and raises the bar for us all as to what can be accomplished with not just the right tools, but also the right dedication and commitment towards lovely, purposeful imagery. Thanks again!
Thank you for this! I watched it on my commute. I did not see the Irishman twice, but I will probably watch this a couple more. Always love your videoes Philip. Cheers.
Another masterpiece form our Philip, nice work! Thumb up Very interesting the 4 channel audio with double copies plus the possibility to change/lock the main face detected with the thumb joystick. Sony really needs to invest R&D in very high speed framerates and a way to maintaining good AF in slog3 and similar situations.
Excellent overview, Phil. Possibly too good. Never thought I'd seriously consider selling my FS7's then I felt this strange burning sensation on my upper thigh only to witness spontaneous combustion of my pocket. Thanks Phil 🎥🎬👍
Thank you Philip, for your feature film about the FX9. It was very educational, not only about the FX9 itself, but the processes and codecs that are involved when working with a Cine-style camera. I am hoping that the FX6, when it is released, makes this kind of full frame videography accessible to me at a lower price. And help me move away from my stable of ENG style cameras and get into short film production as well as adding a cinematic look to my documentaries. In fact, going by the FS5/FS7 releases, the FX6 may even be better in some respects - perhaps including some of the nice-to-haves that you requested for the FX9.
I've been sitting on the fence since it was announced. But after learning just how much this camera is capable of it's quite brilliant. Perfect for my work. Thanks for a killer review Phillip all the way from Australia! 🇦🇺
Amazing work. So detailed and in depth. As a former cameraman your video has been of major help with understanding the fx9. Such an incredible camera when its done right. Much respect to you and your work phil!
4 years late to this party. But so good Philip. Only you can make a camera review with a story arc that gives me the feels. Thank you for your dedication to the craft of filmmaking.
Though I do not have the budget for this camera yet, I still watch, I've always enjoyed Philip Bloom video, be it review or documentary. He is one of my favourite that I follow. Its the way he tells the story without being too fanciful and showy, always using gears and tools necessary to enhance the story, down to earth and his willingness to share, his love for cats is a bonus as I have a rescued cat and share the same sentiments. Thumbs up Philip, great job and great content as always !
Thank you sincerely for the effort necessary to produce such a thorough review. I've already purchased this camera and this has certainly expanded my knowledge.
Thank you phillip fantastic review, no such thing as too indepth! I've bought the a7s and Fs7 after scrutinizing the info in your reviews and you haven't steered me wrong yet, very appreciative of the hard work putting these together. Very likely to pick up an fx9 this year money permitted. The sonys are incredible cameras once you get through the small quirks and caveats. An increase in image quality from the fs7 with similar usability would have me interested, but the 'bonus' features like autofocus and better baked in colour when I'm not shooting log is incredibly useful. Backup audio on channel 3 and 4!? Haven't heard this anywhere else, amazing feature! Really wish sony would push to squeeze every last drop of performance out of this camera, more frames/resolution/colour sampling, if it needs a better performing codec or cfexpress cards so be it. 10bit 422 in 4k is a bit lacking when Canon have had 10 (and 12bit?) 444 since the c300m2. But even without that it still seems incredible. The joy of the fs7 was it's ability to scale, you could get everything from 2 hours to 25 mins on a 64gb card, making it great for everything from corporates and events to narrative fiction and documentary. Fx9 looks largely the same, but always looking to squeeze the best image possible out when I need to, hopefully firmware can help. Fs7 at release was a pain versus a couple firmwares in(still have memories of no waveforms working in dci 4k), glad that sony has a roadmap for this one. Thanks again Phillip!
Thanks Philip for this fantastic review.... you have convinced me to give my back a rest ( On some shoots anyway ) from the F5 / 17-120 combo and travel light with the added side benefit of superior pictures. I for one after 33 years am not afraid of Auto focus.... bring it on.
Lovely as always Philip! Even though this is almost 2 hours, there is more to explore on this magnificent filmmaking tool. Very keen on seeing the post stabilisation. I hope to operate this sometime. For now I’ll do with my 8-bit A7III and get the best picture out of it that I can.
Just watched a 2hr video of a camera that I don't need (nor can afford for that matter!)....and enjoyed every minute of it. I regret nothing. Cheers Philip. :)
Philip this review is absolutely stunning. This is much better than some Hollywood movies. It was a joy. And the picture from FX9 is beautiful. Thank you for your time and effort. Best review I've seen to date. Period. PS: please do some Postcard videos with it. Loved your Postcard videos :)
This was amazing, Philip. Amazing. I can only imagine how exhausted you are after this review but I have to be honest and say I hope your future reviews at least tickle the runtime of this one. Not only is this the definitive review of this camera, but also a 2 hour long movie that I greatly enjoyed. I am a bit of a camera nerd so I may be a skosh biased there. Fingers crossed we get more like this, good sir. Well done.
I'm not looking to buy the FX-9 because I'm super happy with my a7iii (besides the fact that I don't have the budget ahah). But still, no matter how long your reviews are, they are the most interesting on youtube, please continue making them. Thank you.

To be honest I watched first 15 minutes and then I gave up because is a long video and require a lot of attention, but I came back after 4 days because I realized the amount of time, energy and passion you put in those videos. I adore your videos, your music choice and you are such a great inspiration for lots of people! This camera is very capable pro videocamera, made for pro people. Love the footage you managed to capture, specially in low light. I'm really impressed! And I really want to say THANK YOU!!!
This is the best thing I have EVER seen on TH-cam. Thank you Philip Bloom.
I can't believe I watched this for 2 hours knowing I can't afford this camera lol. How much do kidney go for now days? Awesome movie man :)
Haberstock Dominik thank you so much! :)
Thank you for all of your time and effort Mr. Bloom. Your reviews are the most practical and informative. On behalf of a lot of us, thank you!
"THE IRISHMAN" OF CAMERA REVIEWS, LOVE IT
The CGI is seamless. Solid work.
When reviews are well turned into stories, it's so much worth it.
Great job Philip, quality, precision, patience.....
Bravo indeed and thank you for your continued efforts to educate, inform and entertain us all 👍
Watched the whole thing in one sitting actually. Really appreciated the depth and breadth of this review. 🙏
Thanks for taking the time to put this together Philip! You did an excellent job.
Thanks for all the time put into the review Phillip! Really enjoyed it
Excellent review. In a world full of "unboxing" videos, your complete, thorough and thoughtful review is appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to make this! I am a longtime FS7 owner and this really helps me make better camera buying/renting decisions.
that depth of field pull is amazing feature. Enjoyed it watching a lot. Thanks Philip.
I'm just a poor videographer from the other side of the world loving this videos! Some would call it masochism, I prefer to call it entertainment. Greetings from Uruguay
Only PB where I'll watch a 2hr review of a camera, simply superb sir.
I'm glad my tweet made it in (3:08)! Enjoyable video, I think it's nice to see long-form videos on TH-cam and you have a great visual style. The camera is too large and too expensive for my needs, but it is interesting to see what functionality and quality you get at the higher end.
"Can I offer you some adorable cat footage in these trying times?" -Philip Bloom (You get a thumbs up)
Amazing Philip! thank you so much for your dedication, sharing your unique personal take and stunning footage.
thank you bloom, the color and the plans for 16bit raw to me is the game changer for this camera
Peace and Love, Vincent.
fiberglasskicker thanks very much Vincent!
Philip, capturing the ordinary and the commonplace like you have done to demonstrate here is of great value. Its nice to get the glossy commercial shots but I would hope others will be inspired to capture the natural world of humans like you have here.
Wow, your transitions are so clean. I remember watching your a7s review years ago and getting hooked on your content. Brilliant work as always!
Thanks Savannah 🙂
That autofocus is game-changing! Thanks for the monster review. This is the ultimate camera where the image overwhelms the specs. I truely hope Sony brings this Venice colour-science through to all their new cameras - so much better than their previous colour-science.
I do nothing in film industry but I really liked watching lots of shots. What a massive review, almost 2 hours. Cant imagen how long it took to make this
Great!! Phillip, as we told you before, we bought the FX9 based on your first impression video - so glad we did! Thanks!
Thanks Philip! Nice to see a well-done review on this camera.
I'm an amateur filmmaker and I'm learning as I go. Although I'll never have the money to get one of these camera's, your videos teach me a lot about filmmaking. They are also a pleasure to watch. Thank you.
Thank you Philip for this great Fx9 review! all informations we need to know are well presented as usual.
Shocked to see your Fs7 back to his box.
Rudolph Lagarrigue selling it and my FS5!!
Had to split this up into two viewings. Indepth and insightful. Thanks for your effort and considerable time. Quite the endeavor.
I just finished it .. wow , this review....
sooo much value... highly appreciated
Great Guy,
Thanks lot for this!!!.
jonathan cave thanks Jonathan!
Outstanding. I'm so damn tempted. I just wonder if its too big for my application.
Great piece of work. When the passion is authentic, it does make the difference.
Thank you.
Feature length Bloom? Yes pls!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE these reviews. Thank you Philip for taking the time to do these for the love of filmmaking, not just youtube views.
This guy knows about storytelling especially with music, thanks for all the efforts.
Thank you for this! I watched it on my commute. I did not see the Irishman twice, but I will probably watch this a couple more. Always love your videoes Philip. Cheers.
Another masterpiece form our Philip, nice work! Thumb up
Very interesting the 4 channel audio with double copies plus the possibility to change/lock the main face detected with the thumb joystick.
Steve Davis good on you Steve! I can tell you with my eyesight getting worse it gives me confidence too!
Thank you and your cats for the time and energy you have put into this review (and other reviews). Very well done!! Cheers!!
Vanguard Media and Entertainment, Inc. the cats say thanks!
I mean this in the nicest way: I use your reviews to fall asleep. They're more calming than any rain or ambient noise video I've ever found. Thanks!
they put me to sleep so i understand!
I can't believe I watched the whole thing. :D Brilliant review. The segment about the autofocus was fascinating. Great stuff.
Showing some appreciation in 2024 - loved rewatching this. Makes me want to own and operate thew camera.
Thank you for taking the time to make the review. Super informative and entertaining.
Just watched a 2hr video of a camera that I don't need (nor can afford for that matter!)....and enjoyed every minute of it. I regret nothing. Cheers Philip. :)
Watching you, Philip, is a great relax, keep it up!
Absolutely wonderful Phillip Bloom. You have been a true inspiration to me... and you continue. Thanks a bunch for this video!
Really great work bud. Thanks for the time and effort .
Well done.
Gerald Bertram Photography never will I do another 2 hour review again! This wiped me out!
Gerald Bertram Photography thanks though!
Super in-depth, I feel like I spent time with this camera now! Thanks Philip!
excellent, now just figure out how to afford one, thanks so much for spending the time to fully review this camera.
Best review ever! I have an old panasonic aj-px270 that I use and I've learned a lot about my camera just from looking at this!!
I'm not looking to buy the FX-9 because I'm super happy with my a7iii (besides the fact that I don't have the budget ahah). But still, no matter how long your reviews are, they are the most interesting on youtube, please continue making them. Thank you.
Thank you very much Philip for your excellent and very interesting video. The best review I have seen on youtube so far.
