Plumbing the Wastegate on a Turbo 8.1 Vortec Silverado

  • The wastegate is a very important part of any turbo setup because you want to have the correct amount of boost. In this upload, I build a tube to recirculate the wastegate dump into the turbo down pipe, and I weld an aluminum bung into the compressor outlet adapter to pull the boost reference line from.
UglyTruck is a 2000 Silverado 1500 thats been swapped to an 8.1 big block with a 4L80e transmission, and we're in the process or turbocharging it, and wastegate plumbing is top of the list.

The clearance issue , on the downpipe , could be even easier to fix than you are thinking .
Ugly truck has some sort of steering bump stop . Adjust or add to it to limit steering travel .
      Bam ! All fixed

EXCELLENT fit up on that very difficult
    junction for the BOV tube!!!
Argon tank valves are double seated,
which means just cracking them open CAN
    cause them to leak gas.
Best practice is to open them to the full open side.
That side has a seal on the full open way.

Even if not wanting to change boost levels a manual boost controller in that line would block boost from reaching the gate until your "preset/preload" psi so that you dont start cracking the gate early, it will let the boost pass to the gate as soon as it hits a certain level.

If all else fails on the throttle body cold side tubing you could make a triangle shaped throttle body adaptor that mounts behind the throttle body and changes the angle so it doesn’t stick up, rather faces forward toward the radiator so the 90 degree adaptor would fit

I always thought it was best to run the wastegate pressure from the manifold because that's the actual pressure that's actually getting to the engine because there's always a little bit of pressure loss with intercoolers and then it's responding from the pressure that's actually making it to the manifold

If you bolted a plate to the top of your foundation you could raise that metal saw up just a smidge!

It's an interesting build you got going on here. Awesome work! I am liking the vids! This is a cool project. I especially like the level of detail. Really shows the amount of work and though that goes into a build.
Question for you. Why run bellows on the wastegate to exhaust pipe, but not the crossover? The crossover is a lot bigger and I think will get hotter so you'll have more thermal expansion and contraction in that piece. Of course a high quality one with the proper liner to protect your turbo. Just curious.

    • @LawrenceTolman
      @LawrenceTolman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

i debated putting one in the crossover between each manifold, but was worried it would flex too much and stretch the bellows because of the shape of the pipe. I may add one later on though... I put one on the waste-gate dump tube because I figured the down pipe would have the greatest chance of moving around, and because the wastegate dump will see different thermal cycles than the rest of the exhaust (due to it not always having hot gasses moving through it). to me, that part of the whole system would see the most movement and stress...

  • @bstgarage7803

The inner fender being in there is a bad idea... it's going to melt. regardless of how well you trim it. I would also suggest making a bracket off of the bottom of the block to the base of the turbo using a turnbuckle to support the turbo... that way you don't have any cracks or warping.
