    I’m not upset or disappointed by the S9. It’s just not a camera for me. However, when I look at this camera from the perspective of a non-camera nerd who makes content for platforms like tiktok (as this is clearly the audience the S9 is aimed at), the S9 still doesn’t make any sense. The fact that it’s full frame is completely unnecessary or even undesirable for multiple reasons (like compactness of both body and lenses). Especially with the 26mm f8, which isn’t really wide enough to vlog with either.. plus, as a vlogger you want an autofocus lens, which it isn’t.
    Anyway, I get why Panasonic came out with a camera like this, I can clearly see the audience it’s aimed at and they should go for that audience. But I think they made some very strange decisions that I think are not going to make the S9 sell very well (unfortunately). I do appreciate your point of view though!

      Oh yeah, it definitely doesn’t mean that this camera is above criticism and couldn’t be improved. I think it could do a little bit more to cater to creators and casual users for sure and I think the price point is a little off as well. That being said there’s a ton of people who are obsessed with these small cameras and I’m hoping if it does well, it can fuel the development for the really fun stuff for us camera nerds and the future.
      And I totally would buy one if it was a little bit cheaper.

      @@castielvargastv7931 I get that. But I think a G100m2 with most of the same (but even smaller) design and features and PDAF as the S9 paired with the 9mm f1.7 would be plenty for great image quality and low light performance for vloggers/social media while keeping a super small and light package. Even if one would use other lenses

    With so many f1.7 and f1.8 small light prime lens from Panasonic and Olympus, the small camera Panasonic should come out is m43 body. With the lastest tech, that is more fun than this s9 with f8 lens..

    I've followed you for a couple of years Rhett and liked your videos about the 10-25mm among others. You're a cool laid back guy that brings up good points.
    Many including myself maybe got a little too negative at the announcement of this S9. But I got a few LONG detailed points to help you understand this convoluted mess and why people are very upset for good reason. Also 1 point that I personally worry about:
    This was intially teased as a Full Frame GM1. It clearly has the same look with the lack of both a grip and a viewfinder. As much as I wanted a m43 camera (more on this later) the idea of a FF GM1 still had my interest. It was then revealed that it was going to be intended mostly for Vloggers OR people that want a compact FF camera.
    Well ok.. a bit of disappointment because we've heard this before.. but OK Fine. Even if it's geared more for video, it will surely at least have some basic photography features. Next we find out it has IBIS!! Excellent. It looks like it has a Hotshoe as well!
    Oh wait... that's a Cold Shoe. Are you kidding me.. no Mechanical shutter at all!? So Rolling Shutter and banding under LED lights is unavoidable? All Panasonic had to do was add a couple more millimeters of thickness for a basic mech shutter and a few electronic contacts to allow for a flash or future EVF. Then it would be a smash hit with many photographers AND be a gateway to bring many m43 users to L-Mount. That would have made actual sense. But alas... I guess they didn't want to cannibalize s5ii sales. Lame... but again OK. Apparently they are targeting Vloggers once again.
    Oh wait... 10 and 15 Minute Recording limits? I understand a full frame sensor crammed in a small body with no fan is going to lead to potential overheating issues. But NO reason to limit vloggers with a timer instead of just stopping the camera when it reaches a certain high temp.
    Oh wait... yet another change in the story... Actually this was made for all the young TikTokers that only do short video clips and don't care about any advanced (or even basic) features. Yeah that's it.. it's more aimed at beginners that just want a small stylish camera. Wait.. wouldn't a m43 version of this make WAAY more sense in that case?
    So you see... it went from a GM1 looking camera(capturing m43 users interest) to actually being aimed at Vloggers OR possibly just people that want a small FF camera... to suddenly being mostly for TikTokers that don't care about features. 😮😵😡 WTF?
    Oh but wait... it comes with a FREE F8 MANUAL focus lens. Because that's exactly what a beginner or TikToker would want: Cellphone quality bokeh and deal with manual focus. The best part? $1,500 for a EVFless, Shutterless, HotShoeless, VideoTimeLimited camera. But it has LUTS!
    Now here is my BIG Concern. Lets say this camera sells well despite all the significant flaws and not really having a real specific target audience... Now the next big SERIOUS camera that comes out like a new S1R and it gets compared to this apparent beginner cameras price. Well it can then be argued that the Pro camera with way more specs should have a much higher price tag. It would be a sneaky way to justify increasing price tags. Not saying this is the plan at all but worth mentioning.
    To conclude... this was a confusing and embarrassing mess by Panny. To the point of being insulting to it's loyal buyers and really questioning where they are headed. If the S9 is at all indicitive of future cameras and future market of buyers.. many hardcore loyalists will dissappear and camera quality is in jeopardy.
    Now the HOPE is that this was just an experimental or desperate attempt to bring in more sales and larger audiences. Maybe just some incompetence or questionable ideas and not greed. But those paying attention are not stupid and know how fast things can go south.
    I'm an owner of several thousand dollars worth of Panasonic equipment (all m43 gear). I and many others just want to see Panny do well but also respect it's loyal customers. That is all. 🙂

      Lots of bla bla. 😂 This camera is not for you, i get it but i would love to have it as a fun and broll camera. It can do great photos, great video. No mechanical shutter? Who cares? I never use mechanical shutter on my paid photo/Video shoots. Sorry i dont have rolling shutter shooting my models. I dont use flashes as i am an led guy so cold shoe is no problem at all. Record time limits? Who cares. I do short clips with my models and even when i was an actor for a big german tv movie we NEVER had scenes longer than 15 minutes. I use a gh5 and a s5 this would be a very nice 3rd camera for me. Just think out of the box and you know what a nice little thing that is

      @overnightdelivery 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@castielvargastv7931 I've been probably 85% positive of Panny throughout the years. You seem to be closer to 100%. The G9 series is excellent and I respect that there is a camera for everyone. It's critical features that are NEEDLESSLY limited or omitted completely that I have a problem with.
      Panasonic has not released a serious COMPACT m43 photography based camera in over 5 years. So it's not a matter of 'You expect every camera to be made for you' nonsense. Panasonic is not making those cameras period anymore. The S9 appears to symbolic of which direction it's headed. The least Panasonic could do is say one way or the other whether they will ever go back to their roots. Then you wouldn't hear anymore 'whining' from people anymore because they have a concrete answer.

    Thank you for this point of view. Quite possibly the most down to earth opinion of the S9. I can understand why people are disappointed in the S9 and to a certain extent, I agree with some of the lack of features such as no headphone jack and no hot shoe and the restricted record limits. But you are spot on when you say people are letting their emotions run ahead of their thoughts. People are upset that they did not get the camera they wanted. But, at this time Lumix did not release that camera. More cameras will come. I don't understand the hate. This camera is not for everyone, and Lumix basically made that clear. Why destroy something that is not for you instead of shrugging your shoulders and saying, not for me. Every time Lumix Live has a live stream Sean will say "let us know what kind of camera or features you guys want," "put your opinions in the comments after the livestream;" I usually only see one or two people including myself give Lumix my opinion of what kind of camera I want. Maybe it will come. Lumix can still use the S7, S8, S6 and so on designations. I wanted a small FF camera similar to this one, but with an evf and more buttons and a mechanical shutter. I didn't get that. Does not mean I am ready to throw Lumix out with the bath water. I did preorder though.

    • @GrenlandUnderVann
      @GrenlandUnderVann 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's easy. The whole lumix line up is just the S5M2(x) and the G9M2. Where is the GH7 for the m43 fans? Where is the S1xx replacements for the serious FF shooter? Releasing the S9 as the third PDAF camera is just bonkers.

      @@iamhassan9943 Panasonic may not be going out of business, but OM System might be heading that direction. Unless somebody with deep pockets and tons of camera creativity (such as DJI) buys OM out, I fear that OM will go under eventually. And if OM goes, that will probably take down MFT too. As I've commented on other channels, if Panasonic doesn't soon bring out a MFT compact camera clearly more capable than the S9 (starting, if necessary, with a GX9 form factor) I can only conclude that they too have given up on MFT. All of Panasonic's social-media marketing for at least the last year has been about L-mount cameras. They too have swallowed the full-frame Kool-Aid, to the detriment of MFT.

    I couldn't agree more. I'm actively looking at new cameras and shrugged when I heard no viewfinder. My short list is the Nikon ZF or Fuji X-S20 with all purchases held off until Nikon announces the Z6/Z7 III. I'm happy with my Panasonic G9 II. If I don't get a new camera, I may pick up the Panasonic 10-25mm f/1.7 instead. I want Panasonic to do well but not having any L-mount lenses means I have to be really motivated to make the decision to purchase. At some point I will probably pick up the S5 Mark II but that is something for next year. I know a lot of people trade in all their gear and only shoot 1 manufacturer but I love variety and spreading my love.

    S9 is a great camera for full frame. Nothing is wrong with it. Its stabilisation is what i’ve been looking for. If anyone want to blame lumix for giving us S9, they should also blame sony for coming out with ZVE1. I guess people now have other option instead of ZVE1. Great stabilisation in S9 is something i want because you can use third party lenses like Sigma. For Sony they put a restriction to only use native lenses to get good stabilisation. S9 could be a good option if lumix will produce lightweight and small lenses..😊. Owh i used to have GH5ii. But jump to Sony for ZVE1. Reasons are, it is small camera and a full frame sensor. It also has stabilisation but maybe not at par with lumix. Most important of all Sony has started to produce small lenses to cater for small full frame body.

      tbh this wouldnt be a big issue if the S9 is priced much lower. i can already imagine that those beginners would rather buy an iPhone 15 Pro/Samsung S24 Ultra/Xiaomi 14 Ultra and have spare change for a few audio/lighting equipment which are much more important.

    Sorry, Rhett, but LUMIX isn't blameless here. This is the second time they've done this within a year (G9ii). They're halfway marketing this camera to photographers-why? And then they have the nerve to compare it to the x100vii. Sure, the pricing is similar and there are some similarities in picture profiles, but that's where the similarities end. The S9 will not be cross-shopped with people looking at the Fuji x100s, or Sony a7Cs - 1. It's dishonest, 2. That user is completely different. That’s what you call a weak (and schizophrenic) product development cycle. Without a mechanical shutter or flash contacts it’s not a compelling stills offering. The open gate aspect does make for easier verticals, but as you say, they didn’t come up with a quick and easy method for rolling out automatic 9:16 crops. Maybe they will figure it out eventually. In the mean time I think I can make it work for some super light videography setups where I don’t need ProRes. And one other thing, Resolve does provide auto subject tracking for verticals. Not a tool for beginners to say the least, but for the more experienced TikTok crowd, you can crunch that out using an iPad these days.

If all you do from that point is bake them into your footage and photos which get automatically sent directly to your phone as you capture them. For those content creators that want to use a better camera never had a decent workflow with a professional camera before this could be really really good. I guess I know what you’re saying but I can absolutely see this being the inspiration for the next compact MFT camera. Same style just a little bit smaller and maybe with an attachable EVF although when you say it doesn’t have full frame performance, I don’t really think that’s really true, it’s all but identical performanceto the S5iis

    Sometimes it is better not to read comments that are opinions about how bad a camera is 😉. Currently I think we have to be very thankful for every additional camera the camera makers are introducing while demand keeps shrinking. I had read a lot of negativity of the OM-1II like just a expensive firmware update and the G9II too big and too costly. While I am really happy with both camera's and I fully disagree with both. People forget that the camera market has declined for 90% in about 10 years. How small the improvements may look. The risk of heavy investments grows, while improving what is already very good becomes harder and more costly. Look at Apples M chips the first generation was revolutionary. The second generation was a significant improvement. Third generation was an ok improvement and the fourth generation will be even less of an improvement is the expectation.

    There is no market for m43 anymore. Everybody wants full frame. Also, their partner, Leica just came out with the new dlux-8 at $1500 and m43. So there: market segmentation.

      I don't want full frame. If I was going to complement my mft with a larger sensor I would probably go for a Fujifilm Xs20 or a digital medium format. While I cannot speak for many others but you apperently can (you wrote EVERYONE wants full frame). There are a number of specific use cases where digital small format cameras (marketed as "full frame") do not make much sense. But maybe you think you are "everyone"?

    Spot on. The thing that surprised me and made me take a further look is the XPan mode. I've wanted that in a modern camera for a long time. Not so sure about the electronic shutter, but hey, the S9 looks like the sort of thing that would be ideal for travel, vlogs, and being able to use anamorphic lenses on it is crazily appealing in such a small package.

What a crazy response to a little point shoot Camera that’s genuinely impressive and someways and a little bit lacking in others as you would expect.

      I do own a G100 and I love it, though. I own a bunch of weird cameras. S9 is kind of absurd, price would need to come down. The G100 is at least a hybrid shutter, I'm not confident that the S9 synchro scan is going to sufficient.
