I did not expect my 6 year old comment would make it into the video. that was kind of a jumpscare. anyway, still love your content, tetra. your channel has certainly grown since then, and it deserves to grow even more.
I love hearing development history of games like this and others like Super Mario RPG and seeing how different the early version looked compaired to the final release
Fun fact: Some of the old Kirby GCN maps (backgrounds) are actually in Return to Dreamland. I remembered one and it was the canyon background for the mini bosses in the Arena
A secondary trailer for Kirby GCN was rediscovered quite a while ago. (It had been known about before, but no footage remained) A few interesting things on it such as a brief peak at the Halberd stage, as well as an explanation for the warp star texture being in HR-D3's files. Originally the main story beat of the game was that Dedede had stolen the Warp Star and HR-D3 had been built using it as a power source. Also it just occurred to me that HR-D3 must mean Halberd Robot-Dedede
Also, I just had an idea of how the plot might've gone. You know the Warp Star phone from 64? I think the story could've started with DeDeDe breaking it while stealing the Warp Star so Kirby couldn't just call the star out of HR-D3, and the main objective would've been to repair the phone by picking up the pieces spread across the stages. (Basically one big callback to Adventure.)
Hearing that Dedede was going to be the main villain kind makes me glad that the gamecube game was scrapped. Superstar ultra's revenge of the king was kind of a split in the road for Dedede's character arc. He could either continue being a reoccurring antagonist throughout the series, or finally make the jump into being Kirby's allie. Dedede being a playable characters in Return to Dreamland kind of cemented his role as one of Kirby's closet friends and allies, but having him be the main villain in the next mainline game following Super star ultra ruins the development Revenge of the King's ending foreshadowed.
Ah, Return to Dreamland! Probably got one of my favorite games in terms of development history and unused content. Someday I hope GCN gets leaked or something so we can see what pieces of it were reborn into RTDL.
Yes! Everyday I pray for a Kirby Gigaleak and we get the final rom of Kirby GCN. It was stated to be around _80%_ complete before the plug was pulled so it was largely finished, probably just needing polish, bug fixes, multi-player refinements and balancing (the key reason for the cancelation), side modes, and sadly probably some end game levels and final boss
Kirby GCN is a mystical game that’s ridiculously important to the Kirby series, has numerous screenshots and footage and yet never released or leaked The day it DOES leak will be massive for fans
I find it really interesting that final boss Magolor and Morpho Knight were both recycled into later games after their original games fell through (and the HRD3 Mech enemy clearly influenced future bosses). HAL clearly never lets a idea go
18:28 I like to think that this animation is of Meta Knight talking to Galaxia. She is probably just a normal, albeit very powerful, sword in the games, but I headcanon that she's sentient like in the anime.
I grew up with this game. Playing this game really brought my family together. Nowadays we don’t do to much together, or at least not as much as we used to. But, the memories with this game are some of the most cherished I have.
For anyone interested, I absolutely do recommend diving into Kirby GCN more, it has a fascinating history that has been fairly well documented with how elements were reused or repurposed for later titles (such as some of the levels in GCN being made into backgrounds in RtDL. The song mentioned in the video isn’t the only file with the GCK prefix, a lot of them are there!) And more is still being uncovered! In the recently released Remake, there’s actually more leftover animations from GCN, specifically of the helpers being created and moving around.
I’m so happy to see all the recognition this game has been getting, it was one of my first Kirby games and still remains one of my absolute favorites, the remaster is fantastic as well. Lots of interesting stuff covered in this video, keep up the great content!
24:33 About these purple switches, though the switch type goes unused, there are used purple ones in the form of handles in a stage of Level 5 if I recall. It's interesting how they approached the use of toggling stuff, using just the handle type of the switch. This was a great video :)
Gosh, I've been missing videos like this, showing betas, development history and unused content of classic console games. I really love this type of content and hope to see more amazing videos like this one.
Star Allies is technically Kirby GCN 2.0 considering that it uses a lot of stuff from it, such as the four player thing enemy concept, the butterfly knight design, Cleaning getting an update, an 8-bit version of GCN's trailer theme, etc.
At 6:40 That final boss art for the scrapped gamecube game looked so cool. You can see how it looks similar to an early magolor. With the jester esc thing going on and how it doesn't have a detailed face except the yellow eyes. I just love the design though regardless of how it ended up. The fake nails at the end of those robotic skeleton hands is just so out there and epic. Also those lanterns around the hood look like eyes kinda like how magolor soul has his mouth turn into an eyeball. They play with perception of what you think it is and change it a bit in final kirby bosses to add a bit more fear to them. If they ever do anything with that design it should be magolor's mirrored version/shadow magolor because he does remind me of dark mind.
I have a hunch that originally, the cutscene with the To Be Continued was supposed to be the final cutscene, and that the Halcandra sections were meant to be a separate, sequel game.
There’s SO much I could talk about in terms of speculation because I’m a GCN cut content FIEND, but I think the most interesting thing is at 17:30, that unused “abilityget” animation for stone was probably meant to emulate how in the older games, Kirby would actually demo the ability you just got when you picked it up! This animation would’ve been Kirby transforming into stone and then quickly back as you can see with how he vanishes for a few frames after doing the flip.
(21:12) this fanfare is used in return to dreamland actually (although it is slightly different from the gck one i believe). it's played when obtaining the parts for magolor's ship. theres even an altered version of it before the grand doomer fight!
YOOOO never thought I’d see you cover one of my favourite games of all time! Thank you so much! I’d love to see you cover more modern Kirby games in the future.

The most interesting this is of course morpho knight almost appearing in his game, but I'm more wondering what his role what of been if they went with one of the other ideas Maybe a minion of magalor? If magalor was even at this point in the game,or maybe they wanted to add story about the star warriors? Besides a few bits they were only explained in the anime so that would of been interesting
there is actually a red switch in the game (in white wafers, i cant remember the stage number) it is a bomb ball section part of the stage its in, where you have to get the exploding ball to an unbreakable block for a maxim tomato for the water galbaros battle right after, one of the red switches will move a part of the ground with a waddle dee, hitting it again will move it back to its regular spot, this switch is the only one that toggles something on and off like that similar to the purple switch
It's so interesting to see how much content was reused in future games. Like Morpho knight or the time ability becoming the upgrade for crash in the forgotten land.
The unused death scream for Magolor at 19:47 is in fact used in the game. When defeating Magolor on Extra Mode, that sound effect can be heard. As well as this, in the Sound Test/Jukebox, you can even find the sound called "False Finale" which is the same death screen.
Please make more kirby lost bits, there have been so few of them make, me and probably many others would enjoy more of these. I would like to see the other games you haven't covered, as well as maybe a redo of an older video like kirby 64
This game will always hold a special place in my heart because of all the memories I have playing it with my brother, it's still one of my favorite Kirby games to this day
The Kabu actually do still teleport (at the very least in Forgotten Land!) They just don't do it as much. In Forgotten Land, my theory as to why they teleport is that they do it to return to their original path.
Here's one that might be interesting to you. In the sound test for RTDL, there's actually a sound effect you can find that isn't used anywhere else in the game! It's a third stage of Kirby's inhale sound (where stage 1 was the normal inhale, and stage 2 was the super inhale) - this sound effect was later repurposed for Kirby's final Hypernova inhale in the final boss of _Triple Deluxe._
It’s so interesting that their old ideas were still used in later games. Kirby Star Allies used the idea of copy abilities as multiple allies, and Forgotten Land used the idea of a 3D Kirby game.
God every time I see a Tetra "Lost Bits" video I geek out and get all giddy and excited. I love every one of these videos, I wish I hadn't already watched every other video twice lol I love this stuff!
[11:56] i'm pretty sure the reason an early warp star texture is included in these files is because in the original fight in kirby gcn, dedede was supposed to steal kirby's warp star and youd have to fight the robot to get it back
i love how most of the scraped kirby projects had elements of them molded into future kirby games, the world permire became star allies, the 3d one became forgotten land, and then finaly we have the sidescroller into kirby return to dreamland and epic yarn
I wonder if someday, you plan on doing a Lost Bits for Pizza Tower? There does seem to be a lot to go through with that game; Early builds and demos, scrapped features, temporary sounds and music, etc. that spans almost 5 years.
I remember hearing some speculation regarding the unused Super Spark ability. That one of the Final Boss's attacks shows what it might have been intended to work.
13:20 seems to be a either a debugging for the ability override feature of the copy essence, or the ability was removed and those just go to normal kirby now that they have no refrence
I can probably explain what some of the unused content here was for: • The red version textures for Goriath seem to be from Kirby GCN, or an earlier iteration of Return to Dream Land. • The more cartoony assets for Whispy Woods also seem to be from GCN or an earlier Return to Dream Land, but you may be right about the pop up book game • The Dedede HR-D3 textures are indeed for that boss, you can see some footage of a cutscene where Dedede powers up the mech.
Wow, those fanfares sound straight out of Super Smash Bros Melee. You can tell Hirokazu Ando wrote them. HEITI and the other two early tracks also sounds much more like the Kirby 64 soundfont than the music in Return to Dreamland, which is interesting. I prefer that sound, honestly.
Pop up book=new Kirby return to dream land for switch(outline for character) E3 build=Kirby star Allie’s 3d Kirby=Kirby and the forgotten land So technically besides the pop up book we got the games….kinda
5:20 the scrapped games actually became future kirby games The one that had a trailer has the same multi-player as kirby star allies The 3d game became not kirby 's forgotten land but instead kirby's blowout blast (the ground looks exactly like that game's ground ) And last (i am not shure about this one )the flibook style game became kirby 'epic yarn
Small little fact about Return To DreamLand Deluxe Apparently for HR-D3, in phase two, Hal decided to use King Dedede's theme from Forgotten Land, this can technically further support that Metal General EX is using the King Dedede mech from the cancelled Kirby game but recolored to it's red design
Love how Kirby Boppin made a cameo in this vid ❤. Very interesting lost bits though, as this was one of the games I recently finished and was curious about the unused content.
Something interesting I noticed: where I come from, this game is known as "Kirby's Adventure Wii", which seems to be a mix of the working titles for the scrapped GameCube game and the final Wii game
I love how so much of what didn't make it into Return to Dream Land ended up in Triple Deluxe, Planet Robobot, and Star Allies. But even more that the full 3D game finally got made as well.
I wish someday we get an all, or just one of the Gamecube Kirby games roms leaked, i would love to play them, and that "horror game" that would've been in Superstar too (Maybe If an new Gigaleak happens?)
Regarding the 3D style game that was dropped, I imagine the concept for that was reused in Kirby 3D Rumble (A minigame on Planet Robobot) rather than Forgotten Land. Comparing the two there are much more similarities between this dropped style and 3D Rumble.
In the (I think) 20th or 25th anniversary kirby mega collection on the wii, the little booklet in the game case talks about a lot of old kirby concept art, especially about how the "Morpho Knight concept art" was originally going to be meta knight's design.
9:30 My brother wants to make sure that everyone knows this enemy bears a striking resemblance to a scrapped enemy from one of the Super Mario Galaxy games.
The isometric view of that cancelled 3D game was eventually reused in Kirby Planet Robobot's subgame, Kirby 3D Rumble. And it's eventual expansion, Kirby's Blowout Blast. And GCN's Helper mechanic was reused in Kirby Star Allies

22:21 this really feels like this could have been Kirby GCN's leitmotif.
It pops up in a lot of RTDL songs.
THANK YOU FOR USING THE CORRECT ACRONYM
Hey CodeKirby
it likely would've been the pop-up comic book style game actually
something also to note is that yin-yarn's final boss theme shares this motif too
Ah, Return to Dreamland! Probably got one of my favorite games in terms of development history and unused content. Someday I hope GCN gets leaked or something so we can see what pieces of it were reborn into RTDL.
It would be really cool if some beta leaked like it did with Star Fox 2 and Dinosaur Planet.
I hope it leaks too kinda like dinosaur planet
1:57 fun fact: the PAL name for return to dreamland WAS actually “Kirby’s Adventure WII”
And the Japanese title was just "Kirby Wii"...
@@maricthehedgehog*Hoshi no Kaabi Wii
@@alexanderross8462 This is the franchise's name in Japan
Kirby GCN is a mystical game that’s ridiculously important to the Kirby series, has numerous screenshots and footage and yet never released or leaked
The day it DOES leak will be massive for fans
You better believe it
The pokemon gold silver prototype of Kirby games
I can imagine, specially if it's revealed the 3D elements are used in the Forgotten land.
I find it really interesting that final boss Magolor and Morpho Knight were both recycled into later games after their original games fell through (and the HRD3 Mech enemy clearly influenced future bosses). HAL clearly never lets a idea go
HRD3 also does appear in the True Arena of Return To Dreamland, so there's that too
@@akesan2374HR-D3 technically first appeared in Mass Attack (in terms of released games)
What did the scrapped magolor final boss get recycled into? I dont see anything similar to it in any future kirby games
*an idea
@@luck2626 Probably Magolor himself; that scrapped concept art does look pretty close to his first form in his boss fight.
Kirby GCN is so fascinating! Imagine if a GameCube gigaleak surfaces like the N64 one, we might get some more info!
I need this badly. The game was said to be 80% complete, it'd be awesome to be able to playthrough it
@@ShadowEclipse777 80%?! You're kidding...
@@ShadowEclipse777 SO THEY HAVE ONLY 20% TO COMPLETE AND THEY JUST GIVE UP & STOP !?!?!?!?!?!?
4:59 artstyle was used in Warioland Shake it
5:02 game eventually became kirby's Blowout Blast
2:12 The buddy system was turned into the star allies game
4:59 This art style is referenced in the Deluxe version thanks to the outlines
18:28 I like to think that this animation is of Meta Knight talking to Galaxia. She is probably just a normal, albeit very powerful, sword in the games, but I headcanon that she's sentient like in the anime.
I grew up with this game. Playing this game really brought my family together. Nowadays we don’t do to much together, or at least not as much as we used to. But, the memories with this game are some of the most cherished I have.
Thanks.
Same. Playing the newer version without my sister and dad just isnt the same.
For anyone interested, I absolutely do recommend diving into Kirby GCN more, it has a fascinating history that has been fairly well documented with how elements were reused or repurposed for later titles (such as some of the levels in GCN being made into backgrounds in RtDL. The song mentioned in the video isn’t the only file with the GCK prefix, a lot of them are there!)
And more is still being uncovered! In the recently released Remake, there’s actually more leftover animations from GCN, specifically of the helpers being created and moving around.
Had to laugh so much when Tetra said following to these goosebumps screams "They were less intesne than in the full game"
I’m so happy to see all the recognition this game has been getting, it was one of my first Kirby games and still remains one of my absolute favorites, the remaster is fantastic as well. Lots of interesting stuff covered in this video, keep up the great content!
Thank you :]
2:08 Kirby was able to do this since Kirby Super Star. That ability was an important part in that game, I think.
I mean, it was necessary to use biker Kirby, and Biker Kirby was indeed kinda necessary at some points.
Kabu actually does teleport in Kirby and the Forgotten Land. I think it also teleports in Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe.
earliest i remember it having the ability to teleport is team kirby clash deluxe
24:33 About these purple switches, though the switch type goes unused, there are used purple ones in the form of handles in a stage of Level 5 if I recall. It's interesting how they approached the use of toggling stuff, using just the handle type of the switch.
This was a great video :)
Thx for always being there for the community.
Gosh, I've been missing videos like this, showing betas, development history and unused content of classic console games.
I really love this type of content and hope to see more amazing videos like this one.
I've been missing the same, but with non-horror games.
20:44 This song is what supposedly inspired Masked Dedede's theme for Kirby Super Star Ultra. Neat little fact!
Star Allies is technically Kirby GCN 2.0 considering that it uses a lot of stuff from it, such as the four player thing enemy concept, the butterfly knight design, Cleaning getting an update, an 8-bit version of GCN's trailer theme, etc.
9:35 That hearbell enemy reminds me a heck ton of that unused enemy in mario galaxy. DragonHeadFlower was what it was called.
6:39
Of course it has to be creepy
Well in the mod: revenge of dream land, super cutter was ACTUALLY USED!
0:12 my future self running from taxes
(21:12) this fanfare is used in return to dreamland actually (although it is slightly different from the gck one i believe). it's played when obtaining the parts for magolor's ship. theres even an altered version of it before the grand doomer fight!
It definitely sounds similar enough, but it's less grand
That’s also the super Kirby clash victory theme
YOOOO never thought I’d see you cover one of my favourite games of all time! Thank you so much! I’d love to see you cover more modern Kirby games in the future.

Can't believe you made a video to one of my favorite games thank you so much
The most interesting this is of course morpho knight almost appearing in his game, but I'm more wondering what his role what of been if they went with one of the other ideas
Maybe a minion of magalor?
Whenever TetraBit makes a lost bits video it's just like "i thought i knew this game inside and out" and then you get proved wrong in every way
It's so interesting to see how much content was reused in future games. Like Morpho knight or the time ability becoming the upgrade for crash in the forgotten land.
I love how the first canceled one seems to have inspired Star Allies
( 16:16 ) you said that Kabu no longer teleported ever since KRTDR but I've SEEN Kabu teleport in forgotten land
I've seen them tp in ktd as well
20:44 Fun fact, this is also the first instance of the Masked Dedede theme
2:06
That exists in Kirby super star!
18:23 Wait, I recognize that animation. That’s used by Dark Meta Knight in Kirby: Triple Deluxe.
17:42 Behold!! Beyblade Kirby
2:06
This actually wasnt a new ability for this game, it actually had appeared prior in kirby super star and (later) its remake.
2:05 he hasn't played super star has he
It’s so interesting that their old ideas were still used in later games.
Mark my words, I WILL experience Kirby GCN before I die. I have faith the build will leak eventually
I have been a fan for 6 or 5 years
Also speaking of beta songs, there's a beta version of "Aventure Begins" that plays in one of Triple Deluxe's extra stages
I wonder if someday, you plan on doing a Lost Bits for Pizza Tower? There does seem to be a lot to go through with that game; Early builds and demos, scrapped features, temporary sounds and music, etc. that spans almost 5 years.
I'll be looking into it 👍🏻
@@TetraBitGaming epic
I remember hearing some speculation regarding the unused Super Spark ability.
That one of the Final Boss's attacks shows what it might have been intended to work.
Is it the one where Magolor bounces around in a ball of electricity? Because I always compared that to Flare Beam.
@@buddy9848 Yeah, that one's meant to be a mimicry of Flare Beam, not the unused Super Spark.
13:20 seems to be a either a debugging for the ability override feature of the copy essence, or the ability was removed and those just go to normal kirby now that they have no refrence
This is a childhood game of mine and I didn't know so much of the history it's had before release! Great video goat🙏
🙏🏼
I can probably explain what some of the unused content here was for:
• The red version textures for Goriath seem to be from Kirby GCN, or an earlier iteration of Return to Dream Land.
• The more cartoony assets for Whispy Woods also seem to be from GCN or an earlier Return to Dream Land, but you may be right about the pop up book game
• The Dedede HR-D3 textures are indeed for that boss, you can see some footage of a cutscene where Dedede powers up the mech.
Wait a minute... The "super normal" ability thing might have turned into hypernova🤔
6:23 i hope the next mainline kirby game has this as a stage boss
Wow, those fanfares sound straight out of Super Smash Bros Melee. You can tell Hirokazu Ando wrote them. HEITI and the other two early tracks also sounds much more like the Kirby 64 soundfont than the music in Return to Dreamland, which is interesting. I prefer that sound, honestly.
Pop up book=new Kirby return to dream land for switch(outline for character)
E3 build=Kirby star Allie’s
3d Kirby=Kirby and the forgotten land
So technically besides the pop up book we got the games….kinda
So glad you did this game, i have been wanting to see a video about it for some time now
26:37 to be continued? They were planning a direct sequel at some point?
RETURN TO DREAMLAND IS GREAT! And learning about it's development is so cool.
Thanks for the video!
2:25
I like that pink helper on the right, that seemed to use the wing ability, it's a very cute design.
20:00 kinda sounds like the scream from "you might think he loves you for your money..." by death grips
19:48 Magalor when he eats a bad apple from Wispy.
6:26 little correction here: this was a selection menu for a gamemode where you control a helper (an enemy) to rescue Kirby from Dedede.
Called "Save Kirby!".
5:20 the scrapped games actually became future kirby games
The one that had a trailer has the same multi-player as kirby star allies
The 3d game became not kirby 's forgotten land but instead kirby's blowout blast (the ground looks exactly like that game's ground )
And last (i am not shure about this one )the flibook style game became kirby 'epic yarn
Small little fact about Return To DreamLand Deluxe
Apparently for HR-D3, in phase two, Hal decided to use King Dedede's theme from Forgotten Land, this can technically further support that Metal General EX is using the King Dedede mech from the cancelled Kirby game but recolored to it's red design
Love how Kirby Boppin made a cameo in this vid ❤. Very interesting lost bits though, as this was one of the games I recently finished and was curious about the unused content.
Thanks for watching!
20:10 "well i can see why they were left unused they are way too agresive for a kirby ga- what do you mean less intense WHAT DO YOU MEAN"
i absolutely adore this game 💗💗 thank you very much 4 the vid !! fantastic as always !!
Something interesting I noticed: where I come from, this game is known as "Kirby's Adventure Wii", which seems to be a mix of the working titles for the scrapped GameCube game and the final Wii game
one thing i really like that's small
Kirby's unused teeter animation got reimplemented in the remake in one of the Subgames
2:07 its not a new ability actually, it came from one of the nes or snes games i believe, im pretty sure it was kirby superstar.
I love how so much of what didn't make it into Return to Dream Land ended up in Triple Deluxe, Planet Robobot, and Star Allies. But even more that the full 3D game finally got made as well.
YES KIRBY! I’ve always wondered if you would do something with Kirby so happy to see this
I wish someday we get an all, or just one of the Gamecube Kirby games roms leaked, i would love to play them, and that "horror game" that would've been in Superstar too
(Maybe If an new Gigaleak happens?)
We can only hope 🙏🏼
Regarding the 3D style game that was dropped, I imagine the concept for that was reused in Kirby 3D Rumble (A minigame on Planet Robobot) rather than Forgotten Land. Comparing the two there are much more similarities between this dropped style and 3D Rumble.
Kirby's return to dream land deluxe is such an amazing game! I really like that you made this video!
In the (I think) 20th or 25th anniversary kirby mega collection on the wii, the little booklet in the game case talks about a lot of old kirby concept art, especially about how the "Morpho Knight concept art" was originally going to be meta knight's design.

The isometric view of that cancelled 3D game was eventually reused in Kirby Planet Robobot's subgame, Kirby 3D Rumble. And it's eventual expansion, Kirby's Blowout Blast. And GCN's Helper mechanic was reused in Kirby Star Allies
Very good video! I actually just watched a play through of the remake recently.

It's crazy to think that return to dreamland was originally supposed to be basically star allies on the GameCube!
