Something funny about the publicly available prototype is if you look *very* closely at the sole of Sonic's shoes they're gray instead of red which predates Sonic Adventure by a year and one month. This also marks one of two times Classic Sonic has gray soles as in Sonic Generations 3DS, the higher poly model used for Classic Sonic during cutscenes is also used during the results screen and uses textures from Modern Sonic for some unknown reason. This can easily be seen in-game when clearing a stage with an S Rank.
Would you consider doing a lost bits on Rayman? There are some unused objects for Rayman 1, an SNES prototype for Rayman 1, and a prototype for Rayman 2 that would play just like Rayman 1. I’ve recently become obsessed with Rayman and I’d love for some others to get to see its history!

Omg, this was so unexpected but I’m so excited! This is one of my favorite games of all time for so many reasons. Not to mention Gamehut gave us some of the absolute best behind the scenes stuff of any game ever imo.

My first experience with Sonic R was the PC version and I was pretty young at that time and both me and my brother wound up hating the game for how hard it was to control, however a few years down the line we would wind up getting the sonic Gems collection and tried the game again and found.... that we still didn't like it, but maybe 5 years after that I would wind up playing Gems again and decided to give the game a good hard try and see if I could get the hang of it and found that I actually liked the game for how quick and relatively easy it was to beat once you figured out how to actually play it properly and have loved the game ever since so it was cool to learn about these early versions as well as the scrapped modes and the 4 player online capability.
Sonic R's music is so good. I wish they could've got TJ Davis to sing for more Sonic games. The end credits theme for Sonic Shuffle always did sound like it was meant to have lyrics.
One thing i've never seen mentioned for this game is that in the manual for the PAL release of the game, it states that Knuckles has the ability to climb walls. I was disappointed as a kid to learn that he cannot. I wonder if this was cut or just an oversight?

One cool use that the Fire Shield could've had would be that it could activate unique traps through the course. Y'know, burn wooden bridges so that characters could accidentally fall into the water, or light puddles of oil on fire. Maybe even break some wooden doors or crates blocking short cuts, stuff like that.
it would be very cool if they made sonic R 2, which is on newer hardware and actually fixed many of sonic R's slip ups and ofc, unlike other sonic racing games, actually has characters not in cars (except Amy Rose and Dr. Robotnik for obvious reasons)
The playable proto art work was suppose to remain as the title artwork but they didn't want to spoil Metal and Eggman being in game. Luckily the head who was taking pressure for the team even getting their name removed from the credits until the newer rereleases. Manged to sneak it into the end of the credits so that way they could all still have it be used in some way.

i don't mind this game, i only played it in later life on the gems collection, tbh if you want straight wins soon as you've unlocked the robo version of sonic you are pretty much unstoppable.
I remember playing this at a friends house. He is still the only one i ever knew who owned a saturn. He had this, echo the dolphin and nights. Well those are the ones i remember. I just remember this game being horrible and neither of us could stay on the track for more than a few seconds lol
Sonic R is one of those games that lives in the depths. You know about it, but then never think about it, forget it, and then when it’s mentioned it all comes back.
Those "prototype" models were used for the promotional renders in gaming guides hence their higher poly nature. You can even see metal Knuckles eye color difference matches the render compared to the game model.
It's a shame that travellers Tales never made a mainline Sonic game on the Saturn. I get one would taker longer to develop than this, and it would require gameplay similar to that seen in Sonic Jam. But even a short game would have been interesting. Sonic R looks closer to a full 3D Sonic game than the ridged None Boss Engine section of Sonic X-Treme.

@@joechristo2 not everything is transfered between the two, there might be some things left on the Saturn version's disc that aren't in the PC version. Like the NiGHTS datamine, there were things on the Saturn version, aswell as the Saturn E3 version that were scrubbed from the PC and PS2 release

Fun fact: an unfinished build of Sonic R was actually available at retail on the Sega Saturn and PC, they actually never released a finished version.
