I love Ne Obliviscaris so much! Though, I'm partial to their first album, all of them are wonderful. Generally not a fan of harsh, black metal vocals but the way they layer with the violinist's clean vocals, it just works so well. And all of their instrumentation is top notch. Thanks for this reaction, Justin and I'd love for you to do Forget Not by them if you decide to do another one of theirs. Cheers!!
mate Ne Obliviscaris are one of best live Acts i have ever seen. I follow their tours when ever they play. They play my home town of Canberra most tours...
Dude. If you like how every musician helps the song, you have to look at their song “Of Petrichor Weaves Black Noise.” It’s honestly one of the best musical experiences i’ve had. It changes everything up a lot, especially within the drumming / blast beats, and I think you’ll like it! This reaction was super in depth and I really like your analysis of the lyrics. You’ve got a new subscriber!
I’ve was unfaithful to your channel JP . Had to tell you now because with this video you’ve reassured me I won’t have to go to the other one again. (Not your other one either). Glad you keep everyone here on their toes. I need to be introduced to new stuff like this. I know nothing. “Eye noooo naaaathingg!” That transition you weren’t too keen on - was fab! The voice reminded me of Sanctus Real. Without it it it would be too clinical. Like that other channel which I’ve forgotten about now! Double bass drums. Tommy Aldridge Pat Travers Band did it with one. Go for what you know! Thanks for sharing! Great stuff🤗
I actually really like that. I think what helped was I read the comments in the beginning as I was listening and they were pretty harsh. Kind of set my expectations to a place where when the song played out I found that most of the song was actually really good, much better than I expected. So I thought I would be the only one who liked it and then lo and behold it's playlist for you. I have to agree that the singer does cut through it nicely and is clear and the growling is more subtle and easier to treat as an instrumental sound not as words that are needed to be understood. Lastly, when the song ended it kind of felt like the end of a journey type song like a Genesis song that's heavy at the end and the silence arises and you feel like you've been somewhere. Yes, a bit harsh on that metal transition for sure but overall I give this song some pretty high marks.
A little bit of band back story for those that are curious. There are two different vocalists (obviously), but what you may not know, is that the clean vocalist is also the violinist. Their song "and plague flowers the kaleidoscope" is actually in the curriculum for the Sydney conservatorium of music in Australia (where they are from). This is a highly regarded band in the underground community and is also my personal favorite. My top three favorite bands at the moment are NeObliviscaris, TesseracT, And earthside.
As a metal drummer of 20+ years, I honestly don't love blast beats either. I've been playing metal for a long time. And my band (Darker By Design) uses plenty of blast beats, but I really try to utilize them tastefully so that isn't the focus of the drumming. I prefer groove, which is why I love Ne Obliviscaris so much. Dan Presland utilizes his blasts so tastefully. I feel like blasts are over utilized in the world of metal drumming. Don't get me wrong, when I see a drummer who can play blasts at 260+bpm consistently and not miss a note, I'm incredibly impressed. I wish I could do that, but I try to also stay in my lane as a drummer and write what I feel is best for the music. If you're at all interested, give my band a listen. We're called Darker By Design. We actually just put out a track several months ago that features Xen from Ne Obliviscaris. Look up "Darker By Design - Between The Dead and Dying". You probably won't be disappointed, lol! We don't sound like up and comers. But hell... fake it til you make it, right? lol!
This is my first listen too..OMG>>.My Kangaroo...LOVES THIS BAND! ...:)... .................Love the quantum shift at 6:08. You can tell it's prog, because the lyrics are nonsense...:)..........................Cool idea to blend death metal with prog though, and do it so it's not too shrill...:)...7 out of 10 stars! All veiled by sunlight A murder for evenfall Where a new dawn resides Veiled by sunlight All veiled by sunlight Of gilded silhouettes Where long shadows rise As winds whisper, o' harbinger, lamenting twilight All drowned within, cold stars ignite The world closed its eyes Of Lorelei Dead dreams rising Lost to a frayed dimension And what lies beneath The labyrinth within the sea The black skies of twenty thousand leagues Keelhauled and crippled Tangled in misery An abyss of dying dreams Cascading delirium
I thought the intro was a bit longer than it needed to be. Once it got heavy it got really good, with great build-up. When the blast beat hit it was extremely powerful. I liked it a lot.
I think this could be a decent song to introduce people into metal. The melodies are very strong, even in the 2nd half which would make it more palatable for non-metal fans
Some interesting parts - the violinist was consistently good. A song of parts, some really interesting, others seemed gratuitous. Question: do you ever get half-way through a listen and decide it’s not worth your time?
React to Painters of the tempest by Ne Obliviscaris it’s my all time favorite song by them you should listen to the entire thing cuz there’s 3 parts to It! I think you’ll dig!
A promising start. Liked the celtic vibe and loved the violin but as a whole it didn't hold together for me and I really didn't like the heavier part but I don't like that style anyway so it was unlikely to win me round. Undoubtedly some talented musicianship but it felt a bit constructed by committee.
Instrumentally I liked this song a lot, vocally not so much. I like the layers of melody from instruments especially the violins. The guitar harmonics was a nice touch in the intro and added color in support of the violins. The drum grooves slow and fast were fantastic. Overall I like the ambient atmospheric nature of the slow parts especially during the intro and build up. In regards to the clean vocals, it was a struggle to listen to him. I'm not sure what it was about the vocals that just didn't go with the track for me. I was thinking maybe it was his timbre or the vocal melody that didn't sit well. In regards to the growls, there were parts I liked, especially when the growl sustained creating a drone/soaring feeling.
Yeah, those violins were absolutely beautiful. Maybe his vocals were "too clear and smooth"? I think thats what I enjoyed, since vocals in this genre are typically a bit rougher, though clean.
Sounds like the players were playing beautifully on a few chords and the singer had to try to find a way to squeeze a vocal line in there in the first part. The violin was beautiful and the singer has a good voice. The harder-edged part was annoying with the “monster growl vocals.” This was not a well developed song structurally to me as it didn’t really have any direction in the chords or melody but there is some very good musicianship and talent in the band.
Started and finished well but the metal elements spoiled it for me. Reminded me of Steven Wilson a bit. Significant Other by Steven Wilson is worth a listen.
Yeah and no. Most of it was beautiful. As I don't like the speed/growl stuff, those aspects ruined what was a nice song. Instead of growling and double bass pedaling, I'd have preferred a melodic solo.
Yeah! It's so good ... when it stops. You are absolutely right when you say that each musician brought something: the drummer brought the mess! 😉 Please, could a good Samaritan could go and steal his 72 bass drum pedals from this guy ? 😇 Yet, it all started so well. Am I telling something really stupid if I say there is a little something about Jeff Buckley in it? During the quiet introduction section, even the crazy drummer does the job well. In fact, the whole song could have been good without the coming of this useless and useless drumming, these machine guns fired from a helicopter which completely spoil and ruin the track. Even the growling vocals seems to be cool near that. Sorry for the people who love this song. But this wasn't really so bad to me, except... well, you know. Thank you.
This band suffers from schizophrenia, not sure what style of music they are creating in this song?? Good and talented musicians though just not for my taste in music. Thanks 😊
Glad you enjoyed it - Thanks for having a listen, we appreciate it.
Oh absolutely! Been on my playlist since. Would love to see you if you ever make it over to Orlando :) Thank you guys

All veiled by sunlight
A murder for evenfall
Where a new dawn resides
Veiled by sunlight
All veiled by sunlight
Of gilded silhouettes
Where long shadows rise
As winds whisper, o' harbinger, lamenting twilight
All drowned within, cold stars ignite
The world closed its eyes
Of Lorelei
Dead dreams rising
Lost to a frayed dimension
And what lies beneath
The labyrinth within the sea
The black skies of twenty thousand leagues
Keelhauled and crippled
Tangled in misery
An abyss of dying dreams
Cascading delirium

I used to be more tolerant and open-minded when it came to music. Then someone invented the the death growl. Forget not.
Lwize forget not is the name of one of their songs off of their first album. I recommend it!
