What an excellent teacher John is. Sadly this is the only video of his that's at my ability level but I still watched the others. I'd love to see some basic DIY around the home videos. My current challenges: putting up a kitchen roller blind (drilling into concrete), changing a light pendant and light switches safely, putting up a picture rail using a hand saw and mitre box. This is a great channel John - keep going, you're a breath of fresh air! Please give some consideration to us beginners, we need a teacher like you! 👋👋👋

Wow....thank you so much for your kind words, I really appreciate that. Your comment is the nicest I've received. My videos are things that I have to do rather than things that are instructional hence they are somewhat niche topics! (one-offs). However, thanks for the suggestions and I'll try to come up with some more basic DIY jobs. Please suggest things and I'll do my best.

Thanks John. I found your tips very clear and easy to follow. The visual coverage of parts by the camera was wonderful, as I was able to see each piece you were mentioning. I also enjoyed the paced at which you provided explanation of the steps. Well done!!

Thank you and I'm pleased you found it useful. Have you watched my video "Clever DIY IKEA Hack - Malm (#3)"? I cut down an Ikea Malm chest of drawers to fit into a wardrobe.

@@JohnTheHandymanUK - I've just done my first flatpack furniture put together. I reckon I would have made a mess if I hadn't watched your video first. All 3 items assembled correctly now.
      I'm knackered.
When I get my energy back, I'll watch your IKEA Hack! 😂

@LordBransty They can be difficult! I once had an assembly job of a child's bunk bed, desk, wardrobe. It was so large for the room that it took me two days!

When attaching the drawer handle (as well as other items such as hinges) it is best to clamp the piece if possible to 1) prevent the screw from pushing the piece away and 2) pulling it back in as you continue to tighten, causing the wood to split. Sometimes, a very strong grip will work as well if you can manage.

I don't think it necessary to clamp the piece, just hold it as best you can. If the hole in the drawer front is large enough the screw should be a loose fit so it should be easy to hold a handle so that it's up against the drawer front. If you are worried about the wooden handle splitting, I had this, try inserting the screw before fixing it to the drawer front. Go slowly and if it very tight or you think the wood is about to split remove the screw and drill the hole slightly larger and try again. Once the screw fits you can remove it and fit the handle to the drawer. I think anytime there is a likelihood of something splitting it's a good idea to try the screw first and maybe enlarge the hole. Should you make the hole too big then add a blob of glue to to it.

What if the hole is smaller than the fastner, what should we do? I am assembling a table made of same material as shown in the video but fastners are rougly 5mm longer than the length of the hole? is there a way to deepen the hole instead of cutting the fastner?

I'd say you are trying to use the wrong screw. Its unlikely that IKEA will have supplied the wrong screw. You've perhaps used a short screw elsewhere instead of a long one. I'd remove similar long screws and check. Depending on where the hole is it might be possible to drill it deeper but you risk drilling right through! I'd contact IKEA and ask if they would post a replacement.

IKEA uses Pozidrive screws almost exclusively, not Philips. If you keep losing grip or ruining the screw heads, there’s a good chance you’re using a Philips screwdriver.
