    10 years of flatpack assembly here...
    I lay all the pieces out on the floor and sort them into separate piles so things are easy to find. If the hardware comes all in one bag, I take 2 minutes to sort it all and spread it out off to the side. Having everything laid out and sorted is a timesaver even if it does take 15 minutes to unpack.
    A 12 volt drill is smaller and less heavy so your arm wont tire as quickly.
    Carry a double ended mallet with a soft and softer end for gentle persuasions when needed and a small lighter hammer for nailing the backs on. A regular hammer or the short handled hammer she is using is overkill for pressboard furniture.
    And KNEE PADS. Your knees will thank you later in life.

    • @ahandywomanandherdog
      @ahandywomanandherdog  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the detailed advice! Got the knee pads, though I keep losing a side so im wearing mismatched ones right now haha
      Mallet is great for sure, but I already have my mini hammer so when that craps out, ill replace it with a lighter mallet. But im pretty weak so I never end up damaging IKEA with my mini hammer
      Love my Dewalt drill but its pretty heavy for sure.
      And lastly, Im definitely going to start organizing the hardware from now on because I have a mini heart attack when im scrambling and sorting through the pile and I can't find that one little tiny screw for step 1.
      Anyway, great tips! thanks again!

    • @ThaUnit
      @ThaUnit ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely agree. I do exactly this!
      I also have a magnetic tray that I tip and sort my various screws into. You can pretty pick them up and place them anywhere without them rolling away. So much easier to handle.
      Along with a 12v drill driver I carry a 4v electric screwdriver which is mainly for flatpacks. Just enough power to screw in cambolts without to the risk of blowouts.

    Me and my friends we do like handyman work
    And when they get furniture assembling jobs they always call me to help them
    Because there are so many little pieces
    And they asked me like how do you do it
    And its truth what you say just read the manual instructions and follow the steps from step #1
    And number one thing its to be patient and not try to take short cuts by trying to skip steps or trying to do it without the manual
    I just do it for fun and i liked the challenge that it brings and the feeling once its done its really rewarding
    And i really enjoyed solving those jobs just like a puzzles and challenges

    Great video i just started task rabbit 2 weeks ago taking a few jobs here and there, thanks for the tips luckily I have a bunch of high end tools already from being a Geeksquad home theater installer for 10 years. Mallets are better for tapping pieces together without damaging the finish on them so I would still carry one of those, I prefer Milwaukee, Dewalt batteries are garbage I have both brands

For now, I’m ok with the Dewalt but maybe when it completely craps out I’ll get the Milwaukee drill. Hi, have you done any tv mounting? I never mounted a tv on a wall, not even mines. I was thinking about it but I would need to look through youtube videos to learn to do it. But also I'm scared of I mount a tv for a client and all of sudden the tv falls of the wall. So I'm debating on it.

    • @ahandywomanandherdog
      @ahandywomanandherdog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have done it once, but on a wall that had existing holes for the bolts hitting studs. I don’t offer TV mounting because I usually can’t comfortably carry TV screens all on my own and I don’t feel right about offering a skill that requires the client’s assistance to complete. With anything I think as long as you keep doing it, and get a lot of practice, you get better at so if that’s something you want to offer, you should! I have a TaskRabbit youtuber I follow that’s made a very thorough video and I realized then it still wasn’t something I could do by myself. You should check out his videos @Nesto Works.

    Hi, I have another question if you don't mind. Recently I been assembling drawers but when inserting into the furniture it doesn' slide in smoothly. I search on youtube came across some carpenter that they mention to use a lubricant to grees the bottom edges to give it that smooth slide in. So just want to find out if you use lubricant also and which one do you use cause there are so many that don't know which to buy.

    • @ahandywomanandherdog
      @ahandywomanandherdog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      don't mind questions at all! as for the drawer not sliding in smoothly, I find some actually are made to function that way so I don't apply grease. Carpenters suggesting lubricant, I assume, are because they may be dealing with custom made drawers where the arms require that initial grease? I'm not sure, but in my experience, I assemble pre-manufactured furniture (i.e. IKEA, Wayfair, Target) so drawer arms requiring grease already have some on them and I don't find that I've ever needed more to slide the drawer in. But quite frankly, the arms I usually come across are the rollers so once the rollers slip into each other, the drawer open and close smoothly. The only time I feel resistance from the drawers with rollers is because the roller is not properly in the slot. Hope that makes sense. Short answer, no I do not carry grease. haha.

    • @ahandywomanandherdog
      @ahandywomanandherdog  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You mean like starting rate as the assembler? I think I started at $25/hr. Or do you mean start-up cost like what materials you need to be an assembler? That would vary on quality of the materials you choose to invest in i.e. screwdriver vs power drill, step stool vs. extension ladder, etc. etc. I guess the best answer is that it varies.

    • @ahandywomanandherdog

      Impact or regular drill driver? I know a lot of people use and prefer the impact because it’s lighter and easier on the wrist if you’re doing a bunch of assembly. @@ahandywomanandherdog Thats not being cheap. As a business owner your job is to maximize efficiency. If you don’t use it everyday, its probably waste. With that in mind, I would still recommend this tool.
      Its not the impact driver, its the screwdriver. An impact driver is too powerful for most of the MDF / particle boards that everything is made of these days.
      This screwdriver combines the quick insert collet of an impact with the clutch settings of a drill and has a shadowless light ring.
      So, when you’re assembling furniture, you can quickly insert the bit, set it to the first clutch setting and slowly go up from there to test for the right amount of torque.
      Then you can just hit the entire build without thinking of damaging the piece or stripping the screws. Also the light is extremely useful for the fasteners on the inside of a build.
      Keep an eye on Lowe’s the next few weeks. They almost always put the Xtreme kits on sale during holidays.

      @@DanielPerez-qx1kq yeah that would be super useful to have on hand! Great selling points for sure! Maybe at the end of the year I’ll pick it up!
