Ikea Says Its New Furniture Takes Only 5 Minutes To Assemble - Here's The Truth

  • Earlier this week, IKEA unveiled a new line of furniture called REGISSÖR. The company claims it takes less than 5 minutes to assemble, and they even released a video showing someone putting together a bookcase in 3.5 minutes.
To test this 5-minutes-or-less assembly claim, we bought three IKEA REGISSÖR bookcases and got Business Insider reporter Pam Engel, executive editor Joe Weisenthal, and CEO Henry Blodget to each assemble one. Watch what happens.

This video is straight-up slander/libel/defamation... whatever you want to call it. Not to mention, everyone in the video is biased against IKEA furniture in the first place, BEFORE THEY EVEN STARTED.

The biggest problems are a lack of 1) no explanation that the screws etc. shown in the instructions are true size. 2) No number stickers on each piece corresponding to = numbers indicated on the printed instructions. Recently I assembled a storage cupboard purchased at Staples. It was very simple to match part to position. Yes some people are experts at assembling Ikea products but most of us may only do it once or twice in a life time. Go Ikea.

Sorry IKEA not going to take 5mins to build. I put together 2 (kullen) 3 drawer dressers last night. The manual is super helpful the hint is to follow step by step. The drawers confused me a bit have to admit. Took 3hrs: 2 for 1st and 1 for 2nd. I watched tv while building and took breaks. Also watched a 3min video for help as well. They are structurally sound and sturdy! Oh and I built them by myself.

Even before the video started I somehow knew the guy with the tie would somehow end up finishing the job, the girl would start freaking she might screw it up and the kid in the center just might give up (though I couldn't say that soon). Stereotypes are there for a reason people!

I have assembled RTA furniture from The Container Store, from Costco and from IKEA. IKEA does the WORST job of all with poor instruction graphics and the absolute worst system (or lack of a system) for packaging screws, dowels and other hardware. The IKEA desk included a one-sheet instruction drawing, but all screws, dowels and miscellaneous hardware were thrown into one big plastic grab bag--good luck to the customer. The Container Store desk came with multiple blister packs containing the hardware, and each blister pack was stamped/numbered with the actual number correlating to the step in the instruction booklet. It was PERFECT and FLAWLESS. I cannot believe some Swedish genius hasn't figured out that this is the ONLY way to package hardware for these insanely ridiculous assembly projects. The Container Store rules!

Mark H that is really an issue? I had my bedroom up in 8 hours.. that included 2 wardrobes, a bed, bedside table, shelving and a media unit. The only tricky part I found was some of the hinges.
But if you empty the contents of your bag onto a surface and arrange each item, you'll never have an issue.

Tips : Use your head not the iPhone Plus
Swedes have high IQ, any boy or Girl 15 years old needs under 10 minutes, without Manual iPhone Plus to mount a Regisör bookshelf and without speaking with each other also.
The problem are not the bookshelf iself rather how many engineers you need to mount an ordinary electric bulb.
Man has a refined intelekt some have intuition use it now an then it will keap your brain sharp :-)

You will never assemble any furniture in 5 minutes, even knowing it thoroughly, not to mention the person who collects it for the first time. And it doesn't matter if it's IKEA or furniture from another manufacturer. The same applies to furniture assemblers: if he is assembling some kind of furniture for the first time, then it can take quite a long time, even if the person has complete knowledge about fittings. Therefore, it is inappropriate to say to him: why are you collecting for so long ?! Yes, even if not the first time.

Everything I ever bought at IKEA was absolute trash. Assembling it was not the problem; - Keeping the paper-based cardboard desks from sagging until they are utterly useless; that's the problem. The desk I am using was a replacement for an earlier one that they replaced because of its sagging a full 5 cm (2") in the middle. This one now has a piece of 2x4 standing between my knees to hold it up flat enough to use the keyboard.
