I remember the HM5 days. You've come a long way.
I was deciding between the Flow C, LCD-XC and MDR-Z1R, and ultimately ended up with the Z1R's after demo'ing each of these. Be interested to hear your thoughts on those. I do agree about the LCD-XC's. They sound very good (if just a touch thin or grainy in the upper frequencies at times), but ultimately they are just not comfortable. They're heavy, cumbersome and unergonomic. The other two are very comfortable. The Z1R's in comparison to the Flow C's imo are just a touch more engaging to listen to, with a better low end (especially sub bass), wider soundstage, and slightly better imaging. I also found they sound a tad more honest overall, meaning vocals and instruments generally sounded more realistic overall on the Z1R's compared to the others, though of course like with all comparisons, it was track or genre dependant.
Oh my god FINALLY! I've been waiting so hard for this. Unfortunately it came out a month too late. Snagged the Atticus and Eikons to run with tubes. Love the tubes.

I do not have the Atticus or Eikons yet, I won't get them until end of April most likely. At the moment I have the DarkVoice running TungSol 6SN7 Mouse Ears and RCA JAN 6AS7G. Phenomenal tube amp, highly suggested. However, running the Beyerdynamic DT1990s and HD650s off them currently. You were also very excited with the Alpha Prime before using similar adjectives. I'm surprised you didn't mention them in your comparisons. How do you compare the two generation MrSpeakers TOTLs?
You can just tell the planar driver in this are like 4 times the size. It is wonderful. Honestly its been so long since the Alpha's I didn't want to run off memory.

Now the real question is if these are really worth the price leap over a pair of alpha dogs...
it's all subjective. Imho open ether flows sound far better for music and gaming. The closed c flows sound kinda muffled not as natural, maybe to neutral with bloated bass.
In either case I would highly suggest to anyone looking to buy to audition both first and don't base your entire opinion of one mans review who spent most of the video talking about the closed flows.
But they are both amazing headphones. I just went ahead and ordered the flow open after hearing both, I got absolutely nothing you said in regards to how you felt about the c flows lol. Sounded completely different to me. Much preferred the flow opens
I just listened to these extensively in a shop in Hong Kong, compared them back to back along with the k812, t1, Z1R, aeon, ue 18 pro, isine 10/20. I had the exact same reaction as you at first. The flow Cs made me nearly tear up. Then I listened to the open version and I thought they were better. Idk, I just like the openness. The closed version made me feel claustrophobic for some reason. So now and I'm a proud new (broke) owner of a ether flow. Now time to invest in a better amp.

Interesting review in comparison to Tyle's. He wasn't near as complementary to the Ether Flow C. And his review of ATH-M50x was pretty much the opposite. Makes me want to buy them just out of the curiosity to see how my observations match. Given that I fully agree with your assessment of the M50x's, I'll likely invest the money on Mr Speakers. For some reason I have kind of already romanticized this headphone in my dreams. So much so that 100 bad reviews won't stop me from purchasing it.

Just bought ether flow c’s on Audiogon for 975 bucks-major come up!! They sound amazing.
Always wanted a closed pair. Might have to save now. Listened to some Sennheiser HD 569 and they're pretty good for closed headphones. They don't really sound closed at all.

it is a great "secondary" to the HEKV2, and the build quality is second to none.
the issue is these are genre specific as they have a closer presentation just like Utopia.
yet they really nice looking.
regardless, for the purpose intended, as a secondary can to an hd800 or HEK,

they do not have the impact or size of an LCD-X but have similar level of realism and more balanced..
personally , I would choose hd800, HEK for open and the ZMF Eikon for closed.
the Sony and others are plastic in comparison.

you know i think i have been having a deciding problem between all these headphones are because i have been looking at open headphones, I think i should be looking for a pair of closed, I am looking for the experience of listening to Emotiva Airmotiv's 6s in my room, but being able to do so out of a set of cans, I want to replicate the sound of those speakers on my desk, but on my head. so i dont disturb my neighboors. I know this question isn't at all relevant to this current review, but if you're looking for a headphone with fast and dynamic bass, high clarity, abundant texture, in terms of vocals and the rest of the frequencies, and non-fatiguing highs, yet detailed, what are the options to look at?
Denon released the AH-D7200. But I don't know if it's closed or semi-open. It sure looks like a Fostex. But it's priced (800euro) between the Th600 and TH900. I am just saying the DENON AH-D7200 is another headphone you need to review.
When I saw the thumbnail, the headset Ether Flows reminded me something. Then it came to me that the wallpaper on my laptop is a picture or ether flows without me knowing what it is lol. And that has been my wallpapers for months now. :))

Dude, I truly hate you! You set in motion a chain of events that have completely up-ended my plans for a reference audio system! Thanks to you, i made an impulse buy on Ebay and picked up a pair of Ether C Flows for right at $1400. Just got them today, expecting them to be crap, considering I got them for $1400 and they are upgraded cans from the original Ether C model. So I find myself sitting here contemplating what I've got to sell-off for two reasons: 1) to pay for these things 2) because I no longer need 1/2 of the gear I've purchased to get decent sound out of my HD800 cans. No, couldn't bring myself to buy the HD800s for an additional $600 over the HD800 for simply adding a filtering membrane to deal with their 6KHz shortcoming! Now, with this Ether C Flow, I have an easy to drive headphone, closed-back for listening anywhere, and amazing sound reproduction that makes any amp sound 10x better! So, yes ... I hate you for making my life more complicated from having to deal with all this gear I now need to sell off! . Thanks a lot! :) In all seriousness, these Ether C Flow's sound much better on solid state than on tubes. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I have to agree that these headphones are a game changer. I'm rediscovering my music, and that is actually hard to do considering how good audio gear has gotten over the past 5 years.

I have these and the x and I gotts say right now I am loving the c flows more then the x. seems like they are more detailed and have a faster response. Not to say I dont love my LCD-X but these Ether C Flows are god damn awesome.

Yeah and thats what I thought I would hear too but maybe with the known differences between same headphones you got a better pair of Xs then me cause even though I like my Xs alot I feel they thus far have not lived up to the hype that I have heard and read about which leaves me to believe that perhaps mine would be an underperforming pair.
Daniel Moser keep in mind it could also just be subjective preference but it is possible. I might been lucky, more so since i have an early 2015 pair lol. The ether is very close tho. Same type of sound but more neutral and obviously with handicap of being closed. It actually struck me as the can the XC should have been because the pair of those i heard was very harsh in uppermids/lower treble. Put me off bigtime.

Brainwavz HM5 up there in the lists' for neutral close cans. The detach system with the ear pads are the best. Great sound isolation. It's just over a hundred bucks presently.
Does anyone have experience with both the Ether Flow C and the Alpha Primes/Dogs. How does the old compare to the new?

Zeos must have had a correct pair of ECF's. The pair I had leaked sound horribly and sounded way ''off''. I've heard rumors that some pairs can become''unsealed'' and can be why they are such a love it or hate it headphone.

yes. still the most trustworthy for neutrality/detail in my mind. any clean amp pushing at least 2wpc will run these all day.

If I am not inspired I can't really get into it. They were another set of open planar. The M1060 are another set but cheap as hell. These were warm and narrow and comfy. Hard to pick them over the open airy LCDX
I'd put the Focal Elear in that group of 1K to 2.5K open headphones that are great. I know its technically under 1K by a dollar but if you put it in that category its no competition imo.
They will be here next week for review. I will assess then.

plus i forgot to mention i like to listen to quite a bit of melodic music such as Polyphia. Could you do a review on a set of headphones with a song from them called Florence? Or any set of headphones that would suit this style of music.
Not sure, but for the price I would get the Hifiman he-1000. I am listening to with the edition x, and the open back sounds better in my opinion, close to the he-1000. The sound of the close back i felt was a bit muffled?? Or it's just me??
Audeze LCD-XC are the same price and have Bubinga wood earcups. Carbon fiber, as sweet as it is, has a unique set tonal attributes, or timbre. Some of which are not very desirable. Would investigate further before you shell out the $$$$
I think the engineering has more to do with it than the earcup material. I made my decision. These all the way.
7:16 and following comment got an involuntary chuckle. Also, agh just got new cans and I kinda want these. The original Ether Cs didn't have enough low end for me though, and I'm just holding on to that thought to eventually turn me off the FLOW version.

Ethers are nice but Focal Elear has a much more enjoyable and dynamic sound signature.

Bandcamp. (HDTracks is more of a hi-res ripoff platform, though you can find 44.1/16 files on there too if you look real hard. And even the things they do have at reasonable prices are often not possible to buy as separate tracks.)

Unfortunately there aren't many places to download (legally) hi-res songs , hdtracks is the one that i know that has the biggest selection and also they always do sales, i have never paid full price for songs.
Bandcamp is more of a independent/indy bands platform you can't find mainstream artist in there.

Thanks for your informative and entertaining reviews! I've got a set of he560s which I LOVE, but i'm looking for a closed set to pair with them. Between Ether Flow C and TH900 which would you go for? I don't need 100% sound isolation, so a little sound leaking from the Fostex's is OK. I'm looking for a fun set under $2k that compliments the he560 well, while not adding too much coloration (LCD X wasn't for me). Thx in advance!
