    I understand why you psychologically need these to be a separate category but I feel I must inform you and others here - these are headphones! The technology has been in use by other companies in the 70s and later, and depending on the charge required we have either electrets or electrostats. I myself have an old Toshiba electret headphone which runs off of 1/4 jack with a tiny energizer box attached to it. Electrostats require a much higher charge (I'm simplifying) and that is the reason they have their own box and plug. It just so happens that nowadays almost only Stax uses this technology and they choose to call these earspeakers because... reasons I guess :). Koss ESP950 are called electrostatic headphones, as they should be.
    So please Zeos don't misinform people.
    On a side note my vintage Toshiba electrets are made from metal and leather. Screw Stax and their cheap plastic.

    • @timecage
      @timecage 8 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      To be even more accurate there is an example of actual earspeakers and its called AKG K1000. They are away from your ears and don't play sound directly into your ears, only in proximity - ergo they are speakers, only positioned very closely to your ears, ergo earspeakers.

    • @ald7248
      @ald7248 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @timecage is absolutely correct. Electrostatics have been available for nearly 40 years (mostly from Japan) but fell out of favor since: a) The cost of Japanese labor increased dramatically after about 1972 b) It has not proven easy to automate all stages of the production of electrostatics.
      Sadly, modern electrostatics are likely not even as good as those available 40 years ago.

    • @Bannockburn111
      @Bannockburn111 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stax has been making their Earphones (electrostatic headphones, whatever) since 1960.

    • @timecage
      @timecage 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      But I'm pretty sure he'll be calling these The Earspeakers until the end of time. Just to spite us :P. Aand probably because he has no other than Stax and that's how Stax calls them.

  • @DavidTheCatMedia
    @DavidTheCatMedia 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I disagree with Zeos on this (I own a pair of these-- I was the guy who loaned them for this review.) There are things headphones can do, and things speakers can do. The SR-207s do the headphone things and not the speaker things. They are nothing like being in a room full of music. Z just doesn't want to admit that all headphone manufacturers have been barking up the wrong tree for 40 years.
    The pads on this thing definitely need break in, they get more comfortable over time. Also, I have sideburns, and as a result I did not have the problem with the crinkly driver once the pads had broken in.
    Otherwise, review is pretty accurate.

    • @ZReviews
      @ZReviews  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well really these are yours and you have mine. You gotta try the alternate pads on them. Deep pads hardly touch the sound which is wonderful.

    • @DavidTheCatMedia
      @DavidTheCatMedia 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty happy with them as is. I have no problem with excessive seal, as I already mentioned. (I did initially but that went away when the pads broke in.) Also, I guess I have small ears, because the opening in these pads is huge enough that my ears don't touch anything at all. So in that respect, deeper pads wouldn't change comfort. if I was going to pad mod them I'd probably go for the lambskin sr-507 pads.
      Besides, I don't need them to be speakers. I have speakers.
      Still, if you ever end up in oregon, I'd love to give yours a try.

    AKG K1000 can be classified trully as "earspeakers" .

  • @AndyAtHome
    @AndyAtHome 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The "pro only" outlet is telling you that the energizer unit only supports "pro" voltage bias, which is 580 volts. Before the "pro" models became the norm for Stax, the voltage for the earspeakers was only 230 volts. If you plugged one of the old "normal" bias earspeakers into a pro energizer, it would blow up. The normal bias earspeakers have an extra pin that keeps you from doing this. The pro models are backwards compatible with normal bias energizers, but they won't go as loud or sound as good.
    I have a pair of SR-Lambda pros from the late 80's, and they were one of the first Stax models to use the pro voltage. The energizer that I use doesn't have line-level inputs and a preamp like yours, it connects directly to the speaker-level output of a normal amplifier. They don't make that type of energizer anymore because it apparently isn't as good as the ones with the amps built in. It still sounds amazing considering the setup is almost 30 years old now.
    Thanks for reviewing an electrostat, I had been hoping you would review one eventually. Glad you like it!

      Z Reviews Yeah true but after listening hd 800 soundstage everything thing feels too narrowed. My budget was 450$ for hd 700 now having listened to hd 800 i increased my budget to 1000$.I am also a heavy gamer so comfort matters a lot and hd 800 is one of the best in that department. Just waiting for a beyerdynamic t1 review.

    • @altzard6170
      @altzard6170 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      THE CONQUERER you have to hear the stax first, perhaps hearing them will move your budget even further, plus remember that anecdote of the guy that sold everything of his 800s? must have been for a reason but well who knows :P

    • @akshat3516
      @akshat3516 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ivan Rivas Fact is i also need headphones for gaming so the only option is stax 007 or 009.They cost 4 times as much as hd 800.Yet they have worse resolution,soundstage and imaging than hd 800.There isn't a headphone that serves my needs under 2000$ except hd 800S which isn't worth it because i can mod hd 800 anyway.,hd 800 and beyerdynamic t1s.Don't get me wrong i can buy stax 007 but my new pc that i will buy shortly alone costs over 3000$.And the diminishing returns will be very high i guess for stax.

    • @altzard6170
      @altzard6170 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      THE CONQUERER didn't he just said the soundstage got fixed with pads? And man why go so overkill with the 800 wouldn't something much cheaper also make the cut? I'm talking like x2s or hell even some random pair of hifimans :v

    Finally got mine. It's exciting to listen to headphones when you hear things you never heard before in songs and I've listened to phones that exposed those things every once in a while. I listened to 10 familiar songs in a row once these finally "charged up" and heard lots of things i'd never heard before in every single song. One general example in what I'm hearing is the singer finishing off the th sound or the exhale of breath at the end of a singers note. It's like all other phones I've listened to are out of focus by comparison. The detail and separation are incredible and to me, it's not so much that they don't have good soundstage, just different soundstage and maybe different shaped soundstage. These are amazing. Thanks for pointing me in their direction.

    As requested by Z, my impressions of my new 2170's....
    Mine are now 36 hrs old, with about 30 hours of burn-in.y system is Tidal HD -> Schiit Wyrd -> Schiit Modi 2U -> STAX -> Schiit Magni 2U
    Think of wearing a beach ball on your head....only instead of a beach ball, it's one of those plasma balls that shoots lightning inside. That's the 2170's.
    Super fast, clear, detailed. Their soundstage might not be huge, but anywhere INSIDE that space they're highly active and very spatially aware.
    These are the most expensive head devices ( :p @ Z) I own. I have not heard $1K+ headphones, but they SHOULD sound like these. While I don't doubt the higher Stax models are better in certain ways, how MUCH better could they be, and is it worth that price to you? The 3-series might bring tangible benefits, but after that I have to think you'd run into quickly diminishing returns.
    For a desktop-only setup, could I sell everything and use JUST the 2170's? Abso-fucking-lutely. I think they're worth every bit of their $790 MSRP on staxusa.com

    • @BattleshipSailorBB63
      @BattleshipSailorBB63 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As usual, Z was spot-on with his review...why I didn't go into greater detail. No need.
      And I tried a wide variety of HD tracks last night, to see how they handled different genres. They came through amazingly. Glenn Miller sounded bad, but due to the age of the recording..the 2170's are so detailed, the "old recording" sound was just annoying to me.
      Everything else I threw at them sounded amazing.

    • @BattleshipSailorBB63
      @BattleshipSailorBB63 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not yet "ported" my earpads as Zeos recommends. I'll get around to it in the next few days.
      In stock form, the bass is exceptionally deep and quite detailed...however, it's not exactly over-emphasized. It's powerful enough to tickle my ear canals, but not as emphasized as my X2's which would ALSO tickle the back of my neck. So, I can still see a use for my TH-X00 Purplehearts which should arrive in August. But they'd better be REALLY good to compete for my ear time with the Stax :p
      I have also not yet turned the Stax up over the 50% mark, as I fear (more) hearing damage. Normal listening volume at the 30-35% mark.

    • @BattleshipSailorBB63
      @BattleshipSailorBB63 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay, just ported my earpads using the "straw" method. It seems to work as intended...bass volume seems kicked up a notch, and I can't (yet) detect any adverse effects :)
      They're still not bass cannons, but they miss that designation mostly because they do everything ELSE so well, at the same time.
      Unlike Zeos, who has to do reviews, I don't have to categorize Stax separately from everything else I own. And these are SO good, I have ZERO chance of topping them (with my budget) for an exceptionally long time. I'm still waiting for my TH-X00 Purplehearts to show up in August, and I expect them to be a bit different from these, but I no longer have hope they'll be better. I'm done buying headphones now for quite awhile.
      Unless Zeos points at his Stax in a review and says "These are better than those", I'm pretty much not interested anymore.

    Burn in is one of those things that falls within two camps, swear by it, or don’t believe in it.
    I fall under the category of believing in it simply from experience and nothing else.
    As long as I’m buying a pair of headphones that are expensive enough to warrant attention to detail, first 48 hours they just left to play music without having it on my head straight from the box.
    My advice LOL do it on Friday night so that you’re too fucked until Monday to even care about them and by the time you’re human again, you had 50 hours of burning

    You actually can use an amp with these and I do. You just do it backwards. I go from the sound source through an amp and then into the Stax Driver. That way the Stax Driver starts with a louder signal. I max out the volume on the Stax driver and control the volume on the amp and never have a problem with distortion. I never have a problem with getting enough amplification either because the driver is also an amp.

      How much did the 4040 set you back? And do you agree that these type of headphones blow everything else out of the water?

    • @VeryCoolAlan
      @VeryCoolAlan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bought the 4040 System US Version for $1000 but I bought it used.
      New 4040 Units cost around $1500-$1600.
      And heck yes Electrostatic headphones are the best.
      There is a reason why Sennheiser chose the Orpheus to be Electrostatic and not Dynamic/Planar.
      I've had WA22 Amplifier with LCD2 and HD800 these are mediocre compared to the 2170. The HD800 + WA22 is about $3600 NEW and they do NOT compare at all! Same thing with the LCD2 sure they have more bass but if I cared about the bass I would buy Beats or Monster headphones. The only thing that the HD800 excel at is soundstage which sounds artificial in my opinion. The only thing that the LCD2 excel at is bass which is again artificial and not natural.
      As for the 2170, it literally sometimes feels like the singer is next to you, realism is so much, treble and midrange are perfect and bass is punchy, natural. It literally is a great end game system. The best part? The price; costing anywhere from $500-$700 it is a STEAL, since it already comes with an amp and headphones, you will not regret these.
      I have a few videos on my channel rambling about this system.

    • @KXP70
      @KXP70 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +VeryCoolAlan +VeryCoolAlan Wow thats awesome. It's great that you share the opinion and have had experiece with other high end gear also.
      I had no idea the Orpheus was Electrostatic!
      I'm relatively new to buying mid-range to higher end gear, and in a few years I was going to invest in a pair of flagship headphones in the £1-2k range, but after reading this I don't think I should touch anything other than Stax!
      What are the 4040's like for soundstage compared to the 2170's? I agree that too much isn't necessarily good as is the case with the HD800's, but I own Fostex TH-X00's and they're a bit too close for my liking. From Z's comments the Stax seems to be similar in this regard, in having a closer soundstage.

  • @miceblue425
    @miceblue425 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    How are these not headphones? They are designed to go on the head and the suffix -phone means sound; literally head-sound.
    Electret drivers are still electrostatic technology.
    Even if it doesn't use a 3.5 or 6.3 mm jack, that doesn't mean it's not a headphone. The 5-pin plug is literally like a 4-pin Neutrik XLR balanced cable plus an extra pin for the high-voltage bias for the stators.
    I do agree that they are totally end-game speakers though. My gawd. I still have mine from 3 years ago and even current flagship headphones have nothing on it especially considering the price.

    I won't say that the entry level Stax has great low end. Yes, the low end soulds very different, but very monotonous.
    I own a second-hand 20-year-old 3030 system. It is amazing and basicly you don't need any other system. I use it daily for all purpose until the frame break apart. Before buying the SR-507 for replacement, I bought HD 600 for another taste and alternative wearing, since I am afraid of breaking my new Stax too soon.

    Welp, I just found out the AKG K1000 are a thing that exists (and that the no-longer-with-AKG engineers who spawned that design are making a successor product at their new company). Now _those_ I would call "earspeakers", because they're literally just speakers hanging from a headband and situated somewhere next to your ears, with no actual cup surrounding the ear. So they're really really radiating in free space all around. Those are earspeakers. Still not sold on using that name for the Stax.

  • @leaf4283
    @leaf4283 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Electrostatic is the best design for headphones because the thin film only have to drive small amount of air between the headphone and ears. But this is not the case for speakers. Planers are simply too slow, lack of detail and imaging after you have tried electrostatics. There are still few dynamic headphones like HD800 which can compete with electrostatic. However, electros often are the best sounding headphones in the same price range. Beside STAX, KOSS also produce electrostatics with reasonable prices. Sennheiser and Hifiman's electrostatics are simply over priced.

    • @BloodRaven1011

      You could definitely make the Ear speaker argument. The AKG K1000 was absolutely an Earspeaker. The HE-1000 and HE-X are. Hell the HE-6 is an Earspeaker since it takes a speaker amp to satisfy one.
      Now does it matter if it is an Earspeaker instead of headphone? I don't think it does at all.

    C'mon... new subreddit for these? The 207 is a moderately priced decent sounding headphone... I compared the superior 507 head-to-head with the HE1000 and the latter was a much stronger contender. Better resolution and much smoother than the STAX with less grain. If you're speaking about soundstage, the STAX again falls short of the HD800 and the HD800s. As a matter of fact, the 507 was inferior in every aspect to the HD800 from detail to imaging to speed. The owner put his 507 up for sale shortly after. Just because it's an electrostatic, doesn't automatically make them better. If the 207 are touted as "earspeakers", then the SR009 and HD800 should be in another league and perhaps another subreddit created for them?
