      Many years ago I went with my brother for the weekend to the Rick Stein Cookery School, which was above where you were standing doing your intro. I can’t remember if the fish and chip shop was open then. We ate so much all day on the course - all seafood, that we didn’t eat a lot in the evening but had a couple of lovely meals at Rick Stein’s bistro. We stayed in Padstow for the weekend, it was brilliant but probably too much alcohol consumed 🤪😂

      I guess that Rick Stein’s chippy isn’t relying on return business from local customers like most chippies around the country are. It’s aimed at the tourists who will come to Padstow for the day and try it once because of the name attached. As I explained in the review I think it’s just a lack of attention to detail and some basic cooking and heating skills that’s letting the place down.

      @@thaisstone5192 homemade mushy peas are a cinch to make and just need a little patuence and time. Soak peas for at least 2 hours - tho preferably overnight - in cold water with either a soaking tablet (if the dried pea packet contains any) or about 1 tbsp bicarb of soda. About 100g of peas will serve 4 people. After soaking, rinse peas thoroughly and then put in a pan with 3 times the ratio of water (ie 100g peas, 300ml water). I usually add a tsp bicarb to the water and cook on a low heat for at least 45 mins. This should get them nice n soft but add more water as necessary, continue cooking and stir occasionally to prevent sticking. When the peas are softening you may want to check for seasoning and add salt to taste. I'm Northern and sometimes add some chopped mint or some mint sauce before serving. Once cooked, any leftover mushy peas can be stored in a tupperware container in the fridge or freezer. Bon appetit!

    I love watching Rick Stein - he is a great chef and his late dog, Chalky, was related to my first ever dog (my dog was Chalky's mum's great uncle)! However, the fish and chips sold in his name do look a bit disappointing. I saw Gary's review and now yours - and neither makes me want to pack my bags and fly home to have some! However, your idea of trying the cheaper version did give perspective. Nice to see Mrs Greeno and the Little 'Un having a try and giving their impression, too. Having said that, I DO envy you getting a decent piece of fish. Here in my part of New Zealand, the average size of a piece of cod from a chip shop is the size of a standard computer mouse and half the thickness of a deck of cards. It's not even a child's portion! AND it costs a small fortune, so buying two or three pieces just isn't feasible. (picture two fish fingers bound together . . . ) So when I can afford to buy fresh fish (rare - needs a mortgage!) I make my own and focus on a decent serving of fish ... chips are unimportant when the fish is good!

    • @GreenoEats
      @GreenoEats  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Various TH-camrs have visited Rick Stein's chippy and given reviews of various degrees of dissatisfaction. Which tells me there are things they need to look at to put that right. I am interested in what you say about New Zealand though. I have never been, but I would have thought personally that similar to the UK, being an island nation should mean that seafood is readily available, and should be affordable.

      @@GreenoEats Much of the fish and seafood is sold offshore, to Japan (for the sushi/sashimi market), and to China. We don't get the best, we get what's left. The cost of all produce that can be exported, is high for residents. We were paying over $12 for a small (grapefruit-size) cauliflower last year and close to that for a lettuce. (halve that for pounds and it's almost right) We grow what we can and keep our own hens, so we can eke out our living income.
      With blue cod hitting the market at anything up to $60 a kilo, paying $10 for the portion I mentioned isn't unusual. Other fish can be more affordable, but not by that much. Catch limits for local fishermen and private individuals are strictly enforced - right down to the size and number of cockles you can take in a day from the beach . . . not enough to fill a typical Lyme Regis fresh cockle pot (which I used to love to get, with lashings of vinegar and black pepper!)

      @@lizg5574 I suppose it’s commendable that there are tightly regulated fishing quotas to protect the marine population. It’s just a shame that the locals don’t get to enjoy the best of it. Growing your own food and keeping hens at least means you’ll be getting some of the freshest and tastiest ingredients yourself though. We have a guy lives near us with hens, and the eggs we get from him are cheaper than the supermarket and soooo much tastier!

It is on my wish list to visit but I won't be going to that chippy. In fact that batter looked like the last batter I made which was awful. I think I must have bought a bag of plaster and not flour. 5, Garnish that served no purpose (Except the lemon)

      May I ask why you ignored the second review which gave a comparison to Rick Steins? I think I made enough of a point about the price of the meal at £19.95 - of course there is the "celebrity chef tax" in that. The fish was very tasty, even though the batter was not cooked completely to my taste. I alsonoted that the chips had a good flavour. The goan curry sauce was different, interesting and tasty - just suffered from being lukewarm. The peas were indeed a disappointing consistency. I'm not going to mark a meal down because they tried to make it look nicer with some parsley. I think my review was fair - the produce was good, but the price was on the high side and there were issues which could and should be improved upon.

    Chip shop chips aren't like fries, as long as they hold their integrity they should be a bit soft? Just shows you, brands can charge premium, but lack quality. Rick stein, by now, must have seen his bad press, but does nothing to raise his standards. Came to you from the lovely Gary's channel! The best of luck in your endeavours! 🙏❤️

      Thans for the kind words, I am glad you enjoyed the collab with Gary enough to seek me out ! I certainly don't think chippy chips should be as crispy as you'd want fries to be, but should have some crisp as you bite into them, then nice and fluffy inside. I don't think Rick has much (if anything) to do with the day to day running of the businesses with his name on them these days, as long as the money and TV series keep rolling in then I guess he's happy enough!

      There is definitely a "celebrity chef" tax at play here. Of course, you expect to pay a bit of a premium by the seaside, but I do think for a takeaway it was a bit strong. Your local chippy sounds like a good deal though !!

    I know you are paying a Rick Stein tax but they looked really poor. If they were freshly cooked I wouldn't want to see what they looked like if they had been sitting in the heater for 10 mins. For the money the fish looked small and like a mini fish, very small portion of chips and small sides. We went to Chips Ahoy and much better value for money, tasty and reasonable portion sizes

    • @GreenoEats
      @GreenoEats  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Chip Ahoy is more of a "proper chippy" I think. Rick's a touch more upmarket, but missing the mark on too many basics for me to score it highly

    Most of the info from my Chipper, West London. Is the sea side fish is it caught locally? You would think so looking at where you are. Fresh fish is now very expensive. Most is supplied by Norwegian factory ships. Cut to size boxed and then frozen. Beware that some shops only do one size, but why? Buying from the same supplier and cheaper. Thawed out at the shop and into the chiller. You may find that before the batter is applied, the fish is not padded dry, that’s why the inside has that sloppy residue. A good chipper will aerate the batter , and this will get it very crispy, cooked at the right temperature. Very over priced, at Ricks tourist trap. Lets add another child. So can you afford the price for a family of four? I asked a local chipper, where they got their fish from, answer I don’t know. I walked out. At home we use Irish , McDonnells Curry Sauce, which you can buy at Tesco, really good .

    • @GreenoEats
      @GreenoEats  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You'd have to assume Rick's place must be using local produce where possible, their reputation would demand it (although saying that it's frozen scampi they use so who knows!)... good point about patting the fish dry, I doubt many chippies take the time to do that nowadays - makes a big difference especially if the fish is being defrosted. I will have to check if that mcdonnells curry is available in my local Tesco - thanks for the tip !

    Well Mr Greeno ( bit formal, but hash words to follow) I'm not sure if I'm gonna watch, another bloomin " Rick Stein video. Most 🔝 foodie vlogers have trodden the Padstow Path🤑😵‍💫😯 and have not seen a complimentary one yet. To be honest I don't think a lot about celebrities (?) of the catering industry. They hit a certain level of fame and then their ego's go on a global rampage 😮😨😱😳 No names no pack drill, but you know which ones. You're just about to show this oft reviewed chef, as his team rip off the sad,poor old tourist. Check with Gary, I always believe in his vlog's ( yours are also, I think given with truth&honesty and the USP never boring 😊😊😊😊! I never have curry sauce with fish and chips it's not a curry.. Peas I have. That's still expensive compared to Many hundreds of other shops all over UK..I like a little grease myself, otherwise it's too dry. I only paid £7.50 at one place, but I noticed it's suddenly gone up to £9.85.

      That’s quite a jump in price, but I suppose with food and energy prices having risen so much they have to make a living. I’ve alway liked curry sauce with fish and chips. Have you seen some people have gravy with it, now THAT is a step too far!

      @@GreenoEats No certainly not. I tried curry sauce with fish and chips in Morrisons for the first time the other day. Fish was first class, chips a big no and the curry sauce was nice on its own but only belongs to a curry. So, my first chip shop curry sauce and last. Wife being a chef wanted to try Ricks place. But the queue was horrendous , so we left. Thanks again.

    £19.95 £2 for peas and sauce is expensive many places more like £1.50 which is still not worth it.
    for £15 for the fish and chips the fish looks small I have seen far bigger fish for that price.
    thick batter to make the fish look bigger should have brought some scales with you
    NOW not sure you can call littlein littlein
    for an expensive mushy why no mint sauce in it to spice it up the mushy was from last opening and not mixed in some water to thin it out more
    your second place the fish looked bigger i bet the sauces were £1.50 so £3 so your £15 means the fish and chips were like £12 if the fish had rested longer to drip off the oil it would have been less greasy
    The fish I bet comes from the same Colemans supplier

      @GreenoEats  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1
