Well, the cockles got me! I love cockles! (especially freshly cooked, with lashings of vinegar and white pepper!) That looked like a pretty good meal, too. I do enjoy a good fish curry and the one you had looked okay. Indonesian/Malaysian fish curry is my favourite, though - and it's HOT! As to the dessert - I think one mouthful of that chocolate would've finished me! It looked like fudge! (delicious, but too rich to eat all of it!) Glad it was a better experience for you! By the way - your visit to the Grazing Cow has enabled me to find perfect gifts for a few locals that I normally send to at Christmas! Thank you! They get custom from New Zealand now! And it turns out that Rosie's husband, Mark, works at the place my Dad worked at for his entire working life! Small world, eh?
Wow - that's great, I am sure the folks at The Grazing Cow were surprised to find a customer from all the way around the world with such a local connection to the business! Amazing how these connections work isn't it - I hope they're pleased with the video if they have seen it.
I don't get the wing obsession some folk have, Cannot stomach them personally. .. Wasn't exactly lit up with the fish curry thing you got neither. I would however eat a bucket full of them cockles. Superb, well described review as expected of you every time Greeno. But you won't get fat on that portion of fish curry! The very rectangular shape of the hake fish portion was worrying, suggesting it might be from the Stein Prep Factory as a frozen dish for use by his various outlets and kept in the freezer, then to be microwaved as needed when ordered. I seem to recall that Gary suspected the same with another of Stein's places, but I may be wrong of course. Prepped boil/sous vide/microwave in the bags meals are very common the larger the menu in smaller chain restaurants but I would hope it is not the case. Mind you, Brake Bros are UK market leaders in supplying 'premium' ready meals to the restaurant trade and have a vast menu of frozen meals and they are very successful at it too and of course, they never disclose their client list for obvious reasons. The desserts looked good and highly edible. The important thing is that you enjoyed the overall repast and the surroundings were well presented and the service exemplary. But ouch on £53 !!! We Yorkshire folk for what is a fairly decent pub grub fayre would baulk at that end price methinks. I think your 3.5/5 score was an the spot. It wouldn't get Nikki's Nod tho lol.
I know of some of the chains using those prepared meals - and it's shocking. When you're paying £15 for a pasta dish for example, youdon' expect that it's simply something being reheated!! Overall going to this place was worth it - sure there were minor errors in some of the cookery, and the curry sauce wasn't to my taste really, but as you say, pleasant surroundings and exemplary service,
Ha ha - I let the music run there as there was some background chat I needed to hide - but left it too loud, forgot to nudge the volume down - apologies!!
Had the sharing baked camembert at the same venue a couple of days ago, came with four small pieces of sour dough toast, a few slices of potatoes and gherkins. Asked for some more toast as not enough to finish off the cheese, £5 on the bill for that!! They did deduct after I queried it, a couple of quid would have been ok. Funnily enough sat at the same table as you.👍
Wow, small world !! That's poor to not have enough toast to actually eat the camembert - well done for querying it (and well done to the staff for removing the charge too)
Looks like a pleasant place to eat. Cockles without being pickled are great. I like them with laverbread. I agree with you regarding the chicken wings. You would have thought there would be 3 of each part of the whole wing. I soak mine in plain yoghurt overnight then pat them dry before adding the coating. I did like the mango and lime addition to that starter. The fish looked lovely and so did the sauce and rice. But that dessert!!! Wow! I would definitely pay £8 for that. I think slightly on the expensive side overall and 3 and a half is a fair marking. 👍
The dessert was the star of the show, and funnily enough the items that seemed least overpriced too ! I did like those little cockles though, nice with a pint !!
The menu sounds very nice, I am not a big fish friend, but the restaurant looks so cozy, and it is not too loud... cornish lager beer sounds very interesting. Greeno, it is lovely to seehow happy can food make a person, you are always smiling if you like it😊
It's called a finger bowl. There's a famous story about a foreign dignitary visiting Queen Victoria for a formal dinner. The first course necessitated a finger bowl, something the visitor had clearly never seen before, as he picked it up and drank from it. Recognising his faux pas, and not wanting the gentleman to be embarrassed, the Queen immediately followed suit, lifting her finger bowl and sipping from it. Naturally everyone else at the table then did the same. That story is typically shared as an example of good manners, which in the most profound sense, are about making other people feel comfortable.
We've eaten in the Cornish Arms many times over the past 7 years and always loved it. Haven't been there this years as it's probably run it's course for us now, and we've got other places we like, but service has always been great, and we love the design of the pub itself. Absolutely agree with your review Greeno, nice in many ways but 'slightly' over priced!
I don't think it was bad - a bit of "Rick Stein Tax" on the pricing. I would call it good, but unremarkable. We are all entitled to our own opinions though :-)
I was trying to remember the name of the Cornish lager I had…KOREV!! Thank you, it was doing my head in the other day! Went to Bude recently, had an ale called Summerleaze, named after the local beach, best ale I’ve ever had!
One of my friends father's used to work in a chicken factory (that's what he called it) he always brought home a bag of uncooked chicken wings, about a 100, they were the tea treat on a Saturday, cost him a pound. I know it was a few years ago, but £11 for 6, and you get 5 of the central one, just away from the meatless tip! Definitely paying for the name, if the name was cooking then maybe, but no, definitely rip-offville!
I’ve never tried a fish curry 🤔 only a prawn one, must give one a go. The prices didn’t seem that excessive for a celebrity branded restaurant. I love a chocolate dessert but struggling with them as part of a three course meal these days they can be too rich after a starter & main before it.
Yes, the dessert was delicious, but just too rich to finish at te end of the meal. Fish curry is good - I used to go to a place up in Wales that had it on their regular curry house menu - was just a little lighter to eat than the traditional meat options.
Good review and the location was fine. The beer and chicken wings looked the best of what you had, unfortunately i always find fish curries to be too bland for my tastes but i hope that yours was fine.Good review again even if it was expensive
I think you were a tad generous with the score there. The curry had 1990s Sainsbury's Microwave Ready Meal vibes - but a pleasant meal in a clean, friendly location can't be all bad 👍
It was decent food, reasonaly well cooked - apart from the inconsistent wings anyway. A bit of Rick Stein tax on the bill, but an overall enjoyable enough experience
Wow, that dessert looked rich, even just watching I wouldn‘t know if I could have eaten that! Seems to be one of those celebrity places, doesn‘t it. Food is okay/good and then you pay that little bit extra 😂 Fun times as always!
@@GreenoEatsI left the UK in 2006 and moved to Texas in 2009. At first the "tipping culture" was a shock, but you do get used to it. I'm now living in Thailand. No service charges and nobody "expects" a tip.
The one thing I wanted out of that was the dessert….and you left some!! You could have bagged it and sent it to me!🙄 Too pricy, potion of fish very small, not a lot for the price. Ps. You can never have too much good chocolate.😋 Cheers for the review.😊
Haha - sorry about that !! The fish did look a little small - in all that source it did remind me of those boil in the bag fish portions you used to get (or maybe still can!)
B4 I watch this. Been twice to the Cornish arms and it was very very good. Watched it now and you missed out by not having the sticky toffee pudding. Possibly the best I have ever had.
Hi greeno rick stein has two restaurants in australia one in a place called mollymook and another in port stephens but they are extortionate in thier prices so its just sa well you showed us his places over there ❤❤😊😊
I think there’s always a celebrity chef tax on all when youse wanna well-known person is involved in the restaurant. Sadly, a lot of these places don’t live up to the pricetag though.

Haha - nope just a small error my end - I wanted to keep the music running to cover something in the background, but meant to reduce the volume.... and forgot lol - ho hum!!
I've been to the Cornish Arms for a drink but not eaten there. It seems to be a good pub, but there are others I prefer in Padstow. I recommend The Golden Lion which does a fantastic sunday lunch. and an amazing fish pie at reasonable prices. I have had the hake curry at RS Cafe and cooked it myself at home. It's very good. I've also had the chocolate dessert at The Seafood Restaurant. I really loved it but, as you say, it's very rich. Regarding price, I think it was about right, considering Padstow is one of the best foodie destinations in the country and the standard is exceptional with chefs like Rick and Paul Ainsworth, to name but two, in residence. I do think to really be fair to these top chefs you need to go to their flagship restaurants at least once. I find the experience is totally different. Ricks' fish and chips can be average and they can be very good in my expereince. His Pasties are always really good though.
Thanks for that detailed comment - that's not the first recommendation I have for the Golden Lion, so it's one to check whenever I am down there next. As for Paul Ainsworth - there might just be a video on one of his restaurants coming up next week :-)
Eating sugary food does not give you diabetes. I have type 2 diabetes and when I was diagnosed I was an active sports player and black belt in karate, did not eat sugary things at all
Yes, as I reference Rick is very well travelled, and that infulences his food certainly. I can't fault the cookery of the curry and the sauce, it just wasn't to my taste, a bit too sweet.
You alluded to it at the end, but I feel you may have a better experience ordering something you're familiar with. Good review and good to see Rick has managed to redeem himself somewhat.
Well I thought I was familiar enough with most curries, but this one was just overly sweet for my palate - would certainly choose something different were I to return!
A visit to another Celebrity Pub and you come away feeling like you have been ripped off. What’s New? £53.71 for a meal for one and that you weren’t absolutely delighted with? That’s an absolute disgrace.
Hi greeno hope your good. Just watching your video in Rick's pub. I've just got back from Manchester. Sounds like a good choice there greeno. ENJOY. ANN IN CUMBRIA. XX😊😊.
Hi, the cockles were a great touch, with the beer. The food seemed uncomplicated, but was still lacking in balance of flavours it seemed. Nothing to write home about. 😎☯️🌱
background music when you were eating the fish drowned out what you were saying , couldn't hear anything you said there at the start ... looked delicious but the fish dish was a very small portion , more like a starter portion.. expensive
Fair play to you shoving that dessert in, although trying as much as possible makes a fair review lol. I think your score was fair, as you judged it by the cooking and not too much about your personal taste, which I would find hard to do, to be neutral in my own taste. Great review.
Yeah I do try to take any personal dislikes out of the equation as much as possible... Otherwise I'd be scoring any breakfast with mushrooms on much lower haha. The dessert was tough, as I had already filmed a review earlier that day. Too much food!!
Even though the interior was clearly more up-to-date than te exterior, it has been done sympathetically to the vibe of the building - I really liked it

£53.71 WOW!!!! Well, £47.75 as Id never pay a service charge but I could do a shop for a good 3 or 4 days good meals for that and they would be a lot better than that. I could understand if there was a couple of you eating but that was just a rip off sorry. Brilliant as always Greeno!
Of course, eating at home is always going to be cheaper than eating out - no extra staff costs, utility bills, rents/mortgages, VAT etc. to take into account. It was an expensive meal, and certainly on the top heavy side due to the Rick Stein name.
Hi Greeno. I think this one seemed a little underwhelming on the whole, although not a total surprise. Slightly overpriced to boot. Hope you're feeling OK and not starting with the cold everyone seems to have at the moment. Well done for pushing through. Great review as always:)
Yes, bit of a cold while filming, but after driving all the way down I wasn't going to let that defeat me!! It was a little better than middle of the road - and of course a touch on the pricey side, but to be expected with the Rick Stein name
Here in the US, where chicken wings have become almost a cult, they are called "flats" (the ones you got 5 of) and "drums" (the one you got one of). HEATED debates occur about which piece is best. Myself, I prefer the drums, because I dislike messing about with flabby skin (which sometimes happens with flats) and also with some of the internal structure most people ignore (extra fat, veins, etc). I have figured out how to eat them with a knife and fork, because I'm a bit OCD about touching my food when it's wet, but that's me. You can pry them apart and get the good bits pretty smoothly with practice, but I'm not gonna lie and tell you people don't stare at me. But my dinner, my rules. Clearly, the kitchen has to be minding their business to cook both bits well simultaneously, and that's a very frequent failing. I think Rick's kitchen is still working on it. The fish curry is just a mistake. You need to taste the fish, unless you're covering it up for a reason. Which has happened, especially historically or in bad restaurants or on Mondays, quite often. Older fish can take stronger flavors. Young, fresh fish ... well, you want to show it off. Of course, there are sturdier flavor profiles - mackerel, tuna, even salmon. It seems strange to me that a guy with his name attached to fish would open himself up this way. Glad you had a decent celeb-adjacent meal!
Interesting comment, wings are becoming a “thing” here too, I do find them a little fiddly to deal with too - a lot of mess for little meat much of the time. The fish curry I also agree with you, a more robust flavoured fish could have been a better option.
Curry house papadums are made from scratch in the kitchen from a dough that's deep fried/wok fried on high heat. Papadums in pubs etc are typically bought in, ready made, which is why they're inferior in taste and texture. I doubt Rick's kitchen makes their own, that looks bought in to me.
Glad it was better than the chippy, agree was overpriced but not at rip off level. Seeing the cockles took me back to my roots, pint of cockles. Just black pepper and vinegar on ours as a kid but the ones you had looked great.
Yeah, did you used to have the shellfish man going round the pubs of an evening too? I used to love getting a little pot of cockles when a few pints in!
@@GreenoEats Lots of the pubs used to have a shellfish stall outside. We had them at home on a Sunday evening. Dad used to go to Leigh on Sea, had cockle sheds and they were sold as a half pint of pint of cockles as an actual measure.
Seems a bit of a waste covering a delicate flavour fish with curry sauce, I admit I sometimes do it with chippy fare but then I'm not paying tons of cash for that. Fair score I thought, nice one Greeno.
I do like a fish curry, as long as you can still taste the fish, difficult with something so mild as hake. Curry sauce on fish and chips is a different matter of course - blooming lovely!
Top video Greeno!! Unfortunately looked yet another overpriced Rick Stein establishment, liked the look of the cockles however! That Cornish Lager is nice, I had it in a bar in Worcester a few weeks back. Keep up the top work sir! …. Smithy
Greeno, think you are very generous with your review. Although the food seemed OK to me, I would have been startled at just how expensive it is,. This is the celeb tax IMO. £23 for a curry. I didn't know that Cornwall was adjacent to London with their 12.5% service charge extra. In the provinces it usually included in the price. Reviewing the menu again at the end, I thought it was all overpriced. If the service is good then let the patron decide on how much to give - don't slap it on everyone. One final thing, this is a pub, not solely a restaurant, but the beer price is restaurant prices. Not good. No green light from me though.
I reckon a celeb owned restaurant irrespective of location is likely to have service charge - just the way they roll.I agree there was an element of celeb tax on the bill though
Love fresh cockles if in season. Not the nasty ones in a jar with brine. Salt and pepper cockles sound fab. Bit expensive at 9.95 thought for a bar snack Greeno.

Just wondered, do you ever ask the staff what they recommend as a menu choice? I was just interested if they maybe had a speciality?
I do indeed - and that's how I ended up with the dessert - staff recommendation
I don't get the wing obsession some folk have, Cannot stomach them personally. ..
Wasn't exactly lit up with the fish curry thing you got neither. I would however eat a bucket full of them cockles. Right up my street ..& then had 3 portions of the pud to follow...😂 ..
Very honest review...Ta Greeno ...✅️🙏.

Overall going to this place was worth it - sure there were minor errors in some of the cookery, and the curry sauce wasn't to my taste really, but as you say, pleasant surroundings and exemplary service,
Well done out place Greeno and although a little pricey; nice change of scenery for you in Cornwall.
Always nice to get down to Cornwall :-)
It's time to like 👍 n share and subscribe people. Gary's bump helped but we're stalling out for some reason. Let's get Greeno to 50k sub by Christmas.
Thanks John - I appreciate you noticing - yes there is a little post-bump levelling out - hopefully things will continue on the upward trajectory!!
Looks like a Thai curry. Tasty eats for sure Greeno try some drunken noodles too
@GreenoEats btw Greeno the wings... we call them drums for the leg and flats for the wing
@@johng.8600 apparently it's from the Pondicherry region of India!
Has Gary seen a doctor about that bump? 😁
Yes, a disaster curry we had at his pub served with just one very small pot of mango sauce to share with 4 people, never again!!😢
As I recall, I found it overly sweet, almost like fish in a spiced custard!
The curry was so special it came with its own theme song 🤣
Ha ha - I let the music run there as there was some background chat I needed to hide - but left it too loud, forgot to nudge the volume down - apologies!!
Celebrity chef overcharging once again. Nothing new there. These celebrity chefs can learn a lot from some family run restaurants.
I agree that the price was a touch higher than it could / should have been. Not perfect cooking, but overall decent enough
It's all a matter of opinion the cost
Someone who uses the term BOG STANDARD IS A SLOB
Greeno, it is lovely to seehow happy can food make a person, you are always smiling if you like it😊
Yes - good food does indeed bring a smile to my face!
Yes, I heard that story before - don't see much in the way of those kind of manners these days right!!
@@GreenoEats Me either, more's the pity!
Greeno, what do you say to staff when you visit these premises? Do you tell them you are filming and reviewing or do you just sit down?
It depends on the venue - if I can I will just sit down and get on with it
We've eaten in the Cornish Arms many times over the past 7 years and always loved it. Haven't been there this years as it's probably run it's course for us now, and we've got other places we like, but service has always been great, and we love the design of the pub itself. Absolutely agree with your review Greeno, nice in many ways but 'slightly' over priced!
It's a good pub - with good grub - but I wouldn't call it exceptional. The staff were great though.
Hi I have discovered you from Gary’s channel like the content will be watching more 👍

I Love this place and worth every penny!!!🤩
I don't think it was bad - a bit of "Rick Stein Tax" on the pricing. I would call it good, but unremarkable. We are all entitled to our own opinions though :-)
Nice one Greeno 👍

@@philipmckeon8944creeping again Mr food reviewer
One of my friends father's used to work in a chicken factory (that's what he called it) he always brought home a bag of uncooked chicken wings, about a 100, they were the tea treat on a Saturday, cost him a pound. I know it was a few years ago, but £11 for 6, and you get 5 of the central one, just away from the meatless tip! Definitely paying for the name, if the name was cooking then maybe, but no, definitely rip-offville!
I agree - overpriced a touch, and the mix of the wings wasn't great, nor the incosistent cooking on them, But overall I enjoyed the meal
If you are still down there, try The Mariners in Rock, a great place to eat and dog friendly.
I'm not, but in a few minutes you might just see a review of another Paul Ainsworth owned establishment!!
Food looked nice bit pricey … good video greeno thanks x
There was a little bit of a Rick Stein tax on thebill I guess, but the food was pretty good
Good review and the location was fine. The beer and chicken wings looked the best of what you had, unfortunately i always find fish curries to be too bland for my tastes but i hope that yours was fine.Good review again even if it was expensive
Glad you enjoyed it Paul - it was a decent enough meal, in spite of the Rick Stein tax on the bill!
Food is okay/good and then you pay that little bit extra 😂
Fun times as always!
That's exactly it Lile - Rick Stein is a well known chef from the TV - always end up paying a little extra for the well known name!!
3 & 1/2 I scored but I thought the fish curry seemed small or was it a large dish?
Keep up the good work Greeno 😊
It was a bit of both - ridiculously large bowl/plate, but the fish portion wasn't the biggest.
Great video Greeno..I think the food looked average if I’m honest but I can understand why you gave 3.5 out of 5 with the ambience and service.
Thanks, I appreciate that!!
😂😂 you must have some special ability to rate food without eating it
I don't really understand the service charge. Isn't providing the staff required to operate the restaurant and bar part of running the business?
It's just a sneaky way of ensuring the staff get tipped, and then the business can pay minimum wage or thereabouts!
@@GreenoEatsI left the UK in 2006 and moved to Texas in 2009. At first the "tipping culture" was a shock, but you do get used to it.

It’s a St Austell Brewery run pub which serves up very boring lagers. The fish curry is similar to a hake kazu curry, which is sweet and fragrant
Right, so is that why they have brought in the local lager then?
@@GreenoEats Korev is one of the local beers and lagers they stock
Is there a shortage of rice in Cornwall greeno!main looked small to me!

I have type 2 diabetes and when I was diagnosed I was an active sports player and black belt in karate, did not eat sugary things at all
OK - but it would be fair to say that the major cause of type 2 diabetes is excess weight and a sedentary lifestyle - not in every case of course.
@@GreenoEats Agreed
That curry looks great to be fair, Rick has spent a lot of time in India, I'm sure that played a lot into the menu for him and his head chef
Don't like larger but Korev is lovely when I was last in Cornwall
Yeah, much more of an ale man normally, but with the menu choices I made a lager seemed the better choice
A visit to another Celebrity Pub and you come away feeling like you have been ripped off. What’s New? £53.71 for a meal for one and that you weren’t absolutely delighted with? That’s an absolute disgrace.

Hi, the cockles were a great touch, with the beer.
The food seemed uncomplicated, but was still lacking in balance of flavours it seemed.

Yeah, decent food, not exceptional.
background music when you were eating the fish drowned out what you were saying , couldn't hear anything you said there at the start ... looked delicious but the fish dish was a very small portion , more like a starter portion.. expensive
Yes, little editing snafu... there there was something in the background I was trying to cover, meant to drop the volume on the music though!!
Could you tell us what you were saying please.

I don't understand why it wouldn't be an equal mix of drums and flats...
@@GreenoEatsIt really is supposed to be.

There are many. It's generally the ones where that named chef never makes an appearance!!

Great review as always. Not keen on the meal, food that I never eat or wish to try. Cockles and a pint of real ale would do nicely for me.
Sometimes the simple things in life are the best Keith!
Got it, that makes all the difference I guess, thanks for the info!!
…. Smithy
It was a good, if unspectacular meal Smithy - a bit of celebrity chef tax on the bill of course. The cockles were banging though - delicious!
What I like about is that you don't chop your food up, mix it, then move it around the plate before you attempt to eat it!
Who's doing that? Doesn't sound like a smart way to review to me!
The Salt and Pepper Cockles are just a posh version of salted peanuts on the bar the encourage someone to drink more!
Haha - true that mate!!
Love fresh cockles if in season. Not the nasty ones in a jar with brine.
Salt and pepper cockles sound fab. Bit expensive at 9.95 thought for a bar snack Greeno.
