  • We got a special invite to visit a famous Jade workshop on Taiwan's east coast near Hualien. By blind luck, we ran into Mr. Hui Wen Su who happened to be from a family with a long history in the Jade trade. His shop attracts Jade tour groups from Japan and investors from across Taiwan. Take a look, he'll show you several simple techniques that you can use to determine if Jade is genuine or fake, as well as showing you had to detect other fake gemstones using decades old methods. If you are interested in arranging a visit to Mr. Su's shop (pronounced SOO) you can reach him from within Taiwan dial 0921-975709, from USA 011-866-921-975709. Mr. Su has also given over 1,000 private tours of Taroko Gorge. So if you've seen my other video, and are interested in an extremely knowledgeable and personable guide who speaks English, he's your man!

    Intrigued by this video therefore I tested my new piece of jade bought from a famous jeweller in Hong Kong. The burning hair around the jade worked....but hair didn’t burn on a porcelain spoon, a glass cup, and a porcelain bowl either, so I’m guessing this isn’t a good way to determine jade authenticity

    • @MoreFormosa
      @MoreFormosa  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Jenny Li Thanks for the note, yes porcelain is an insulator, widely used in industry for that purpose so it wouldn't work as test material, artificial jade is never made out of porcelain since it does not have any transparency, usually four different mineral families are used which conduct heat and melt hair, high density plastic resins will
      melt from the heat so the flame trick helps root them out as well. It's important to practice the test on something you know is authentic so that you know how long and how close to hold the flame. Also scratch test, real jade scratches glass and steel, but you must have a sharp edge of jade

    • @jennyli7749
      @jennyli7749 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The fire doesn’t damage the jade when you do this test?

    • @MoreFormosa
      @MoreFormosa  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      great wuestion, it does not, the flame would only effect plastic, if the jade was a fake plastic. Otherwise, the stone is impervious to flame. I assume if you suddenly dunked hot jade into water to cool it, that could crack it though.

      DestinationTaiwan and don’t buy just jade ! Be more specific and always ask if this piece is jadeite? Everything in China is jade ! even hard stone or soapstone! According to them! Gone give U small advice : with a strong light examine the pieces and the internal structure of jadeite should show little wooly pattern ,much different from nephrite where the internal pattern should looks like a small shingles positioned in different positions ! Have nice day .

    Boy oh boy, do you need to learn how to use a video camera....
    You are waving it about like a flag on parade day...
    If there is something that catches our eye, its impossible to get a fixed vue so that we can spend a few seconds or freeze the video. Everything is a blur....
    Try to scan in one direction, scan slowly, try filming one object and move the camera around the object in a smooth continuous motion. Never video going back and forth like you are swatting flys.
