  • A Mechanic Reviews the 2023 Lexus RX in an unconventional car review where we focus on the Technical Side of things in addition to exterior and interior.
So as we say good bye to the V6 Lexus RX we look into the new era of the Lexus RX. The Lexus RX is one of the original Lexus models and one that remains strong.
The 2023 Lexus RX drops the V6 in favor of a 4 cylinder turbo. In this video we'll do a deep dive into the new offering from Lexus.
We'll first take a look at the technical stuff, then we'll dive into the exterior, interior then we'll talk about somethings we like somethings we don't like.

@@rosen9425they’re not obsolete because they can upsell the usual 95% of clueless buyers. But for us, we don’t need them, all I really need is an extended test drive of my shortlisted models back to back and some time to decide. From there it’s just price negotiations on the chosen car between various dealers of that brand.

For everyone saying that they will not buy the 4cylinder RX. I can speak up for the rx500h version. I had a 2017 rx350 f sport and I was upset that Lexus eliminated the v6 on the new model rx. I went in and test drove the 2024 rx500h and it sold me right away. You will never know it has a 4 cylinder. The turbo and the electric motors produces more than enough power for me and is very smooth. Go to a dealer and test drive to experience it yourself. I traded in my 2017 for the new rx500h with no regrets. Going on 2 weeks with the car and absolutely love it!

I picked-up my fifth 2023 RX 350 two weeks ago. I left BMW and Mercedes back in 2010. Obviously, I'm very loyal to the Lexus brand and RX 350. You are spot on in your review. Much thanks. Some of my issues for those considering- I turned off the HUD because I found it a distraction. The steering wheel has no labels other then dots to scroll though the menus. UGH! I loved the Adaptive Cruise control on the older models with the controls on a stem. That's gone. I'm still learning how to use it on the 2023. Yes, the car beeps too much. Not such a big deal - except for the face recognition which is to sensitive. I don't like the Auto Shut off at stop lights, and you cannot permanently turn it off, you must turn it off manually shut it off. (Audi, BMW, MB has the same setup with Auto engine off). I miss the RX 350 six cylinder and found it quieter compared to the Turbo Four. Also, now you must fuel with premium gas. I do like the torque in the four turbo on the 2023. In the older RX 350, I usually switched to Sport mode when entering highways and passing. That was a dial on the console. That dial is gone in the 2023. The 2023 defaults to ECO mode and makes you have to scroll through the LED to switch to Sport. UGH! You admitted in previous videos that Lexus tech is usually behind the German's (MB, BMW, Audi). Those cars have just as much and more annoying tech, safety features, but I know with the Lexus the probability of breaking down is much less compared to the German cars. Yes, it lacks the thrill of driving the German cars, but as a old dude I content with boring and reliable. Again, thank-you for the excellent reviews. Bottom line, a big learning curve for the new RX 350. Nevertheless, I still would recommend the car for the price range if value, quiet, safety, and reliability are your priorities. One last word- your review of the EZ Lexus 350 (EV) should be a must watch for anyone considering it.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the steering wheel menu. It takes two seconds. Put your finger on it, it shows the menu on the HUD (now sure how distracting the HUD is when it is below your line of sight but enough so you can see the road). The adaptive cruise control....what is there to learn? It's one button and it's labeled, as well as lane assist. Then you press the up button to resume or take the new speed you're going at. It tells you on the HUD when you put your finger on the button. And what do you mean scroll to sport? You press one icon in the 14 inch display and the first two icons on the left are Sport and eco. It's on Normal mode for me when I turn on my car. Are you sure you have this car? I mean this with respect. Press the adaptive/cruise control to the right of your steering wheel. Put your finger (don't press) on the circle pad on the right of the steering wheel and it will show plus for speeding up, down for slowing down, left for how far the car will be from the car in front of it during adaptive driving, and I forgot what right was. Press the labelled rectangle icon below the circle pad and it will be your HUD height and info you want to see on your HUD. You don't need to even use that menu but it's there at the press of a button. On the circle pad to your left is music, phone, forward and backwards on music you are playing. So....there isn't anything complicated about it. Up down, left right. That's it.

I completely agree with your 4 cylinder engine noise commentary. My wife and I have driven several 2022 small and mid-size SUVs with 4-cylinder powertrains. We just can't stand them. We are stuck with spending much more for larger models with v6 engines or looking for 2021 v6 models with low mileage. The shrinking powertrains are not driven by customer demands. It is begin driven by government regulations. That is the sad truth.

2 days ago, I was very fortunate enough to tour TMMTX. Toyota Manufacturing Texas. TMMTX is home of the Tundra and Sequoia. I am a Volvo guy at heart, my 2008 S80 saved my life in a rear-end collision. Although, we have owned 8 Toyota and Lexus models in our family, and almost all of them have always got us where we needed to go reliably. Everyone at the plant was happy, with a smile on their face and waving to the tourists. They all seemed like they liked their jobs. It was a treat. And I know have a heart for Toyota like never before. I highly, highly recommend touring a Toyota factory, if you are Toyota loyal. It is quite a treat, and amazing to see.❤

It is quite amazing to see the people and robots transporting car parts. They play a funny tune, kind of like a children’s song you will recognize. This is the “andon” a worker will pull, if their is a problem. Toyota is high quality, and among that, brings high standards in the production line. Every 2 weeks, the workers switch between to night shift and day shift. It is kind of a high-turnover. The tour guide said they are always looking work. Dropping the V6 was a huge mistake in my honest opinion, very short sighted of Lexus. That engine (as you correctly say) is more in tune with the character of the vehicle. There's almost no point now getting an RX over an NX, as the same engines perform better in that lighter vehicle. They should've stayed with the V6 and come up with more ways to get more fuel economy out of it and improve the hybridization of it. Great review though, keep it up the great work!

Thank you for being smart. Automotive engineer here and you are one of the first honest reviews of the new RX350. Some bogus reviews of this vehicle are out of ignorance and some are a deliberate intent to obfuscate the truth in return for favor from the manufacturer to dishonestly aka promote their vehicles. 4 cyl? CVT? Hybrid? An abomination. The car was gold with one of the best V6's in the industry and the 8 speed automatic was satisfactory. Not now.
As you adroitly explain, this luxury SUV is no place for a busy, buzzy 4 cylinder whether it has a turbo or supplemented with electric motor. A CVT amplifies the harmonic pulse aka drone of the 4 cylinder. Shame on Lexus and Toyota for their shameless attempt to market this new vehicle as acceptable. It sucks. Btw, styling is an improvement.
For those that must have a RX350 and want to go 200K miles with little maintenance, buy a 2022 or earlier would be my suggestion. The car 'was' best in class.

As a fellow follower mentioned, Toyota and other manufacturers all have to follow the ridiculous "climate change" new laws of 2023 and beyond by the California/EPA rules for certain class of vehicles.
It would be too difficult to make two sets of cars in their factory lines so they consolidated into the CA regulations version as the one for the entire world or at least for North America. Newsom and his cronies are the ones behind these regulatory changes. It really sucks that Toyota was forced to put this engine in the RX and Highlander models and removed the beloved 3.5L V6.

How does he know what Lexus buyers want? he doesnt obviously........ I shut off what I didnt need and you get used to the steering buttons.. Sure at first you dont like it because you are not used to it, but its easy now after having my RX500h for 2 months... i wouldnt go back to my 2012 RX after having this car.. its very quiet and much more refined.

I would get an Acura MDX because it has the 6-cylinder but I do not find their new "sport style" seats (2022 and beyond) comfortable at all compared to the 2020 MDX seats and earlier. Great review. 100% agree on the dislikes. I currently have a ‘19 NX and got to spend a day with a 2023 NX service loaner. Same complaints with the new systems. The digital latch is annoying and unnecessary. Two steps to open or close. The shifter is unintuitive. Push forward to go in reverse. Push backward to go forward. I always had to look down to make sure I was in the correct gear. Why Lexus? Ok, so no more track pad. I sit way back and it was a constant shoulder pain to keep reaching for the touch screen. The start stop system is another annoyance. I found that if you gently press the brake pedal when stopped, the engine doesn’t shut down. Have to remember that when making a left turn, and I forgot to turn the system off. The safety systems kept beeping, but you never know for what as all the beeps sound the same. Lastly agree on the engine. This one requires premium fuel, the previous V6 took regular. So, even though the 4 cylinder is slightly more fuel efficient, it will cost more to run. Great video. Great channel. I’m glad that you can point out the negatives as opposed to other reviewers who just love everything.

AMD, Thanks for the thoughtful and heartfelt analysis of the new RX. 👏👏You are not the first one to raise concerns about the finicky controls and excess technology. The issues arising from the rough turbo engine may be alleviated by the smoother 350h which is just as quick, far more economical and smoother when the RX is driven in the traditional manner. On the question of safety, you are probably correct to say careful drivers don't need as much safety tech but what do WE do with the aggressive, distracted, impaired and downright dangerous drivers out there? Surely the rest of us deserve to be protected from them by every means possible and that is where technology will come in to play.

  • @pherdantler707

A very well done presentation. There is a point where technology becomes gimmickry, like the door handle issue you described. I suspect much of that is driven by demographics in an attempt to capture younger buyers and/or provide separation from competing brands. I purchased a 2020 RX new and was floored at the collection of manuals provided to 'operate' the technology. Once we read enough to drive to the market and back, the manuals got shelved for the duration of the vehicle. As for the 2023, I can think of nothing more frustrating or dangerous than trying to 'drill down' on a touch screen display to find a needed function while on the road. Once again, an excellent review. Thank you.

As a 2011 RX 350 owner, I was over the moon to see that Lexus had finally implemented a top tier infotainment system and thought this was going to be a sure buy. I was dead wrong.
I took the 350h for a test drive and found the 4 cyclinder to be loud and whiney. Totally against the RX DNA we all know and have loved. To make matters worse, the Sports Luxury was previously $100k AUD. It has now skyrocketed to $127k, for a subpar power train.
I took the 500h for a test drive, too, and was far happier with it, but not only does it retail in Aus for a whopping $138k, but Lexus tell me it's a 1.5 year wait!!
Lexus have really dropped the ball here, at least for Australian customers.

Its not a cheap car the RX, but after driving others, its very refined.. And also much more so than the last version I owned which was a 2012. I really really liked your honestly opinion about the new 2023 RX 350. The new gizmos and technicalities look good on the paper ,but they don't serve the practicality and functionality for the basic needs on the daily use. The worst parts are the options either FIO and PIO from manufacture can't be removed or rejected by customers. Customers have to pay for all FIO and PIO that they don't even want them. Customers don't have a choice to opt out those FIO and PIO (most of them are factory installed options items to the car). Too bad. RX used to be a good car like you said.

I expect the old V6 hybrid models to be better at towing. I run a RX450h. Love it. I also have a Kluger V6 (Highlander hybrid). The Kluger V6 feels more powerful. Both great vehicles.

Excellent review. As a former mechanical engineer I appreciate the technical insights that no other car reviewer provides. I passed in the last generation RX and will do the same with this one. Imo Lexus lost its way after about 2010.

We went and sat in the Lexus Rx models, what we noticed was that the comfort of the seats were drastically different in the different trim levels, which I found surprising. So to actually get comfortable seats you have to go up to the Luxury trim, otherwise it just feels like sitting in the RAV4 which was disappointing as we already have the RAV4 uncomfortable seat

Great car reviews from the car care nut. Some of his reviews helped me decide to purchase my 2022 RX450h FSport and I have no regrets. Great power from the V6 and hybrid system, limited beeping, excellent adaptive cruise control, and lane centering. Also, a very nice and quite space that the V6 barely makes noise. I also average 25-30 mpg with this RX. Keep up the great job you are doing - Educating the masses, and I’ll not purchase the new 4 cylinder RX.

So glad I bought the 2022. I prefer the touch pad. Not sure why people don’t like it. It’s easy to use and prevents those awful fingerprints on the touchscreen.

Thanks for the informative review. As a 450L owner, I couldn’t agree more with the interior nice people comments. You provided a lot of important information and I hope the market feedback resonates with the designers for the 2024 model year. I’ll hang on to my ride for now, even though I really like the “Prius shifter”! All the best!

I have to say for the first time, I prefer the Highlander now since the latest gen received seat memory, functioning ventilated seats, etc.... and a very smooth ride with a much much much improved seat from previous gens

The Highlander Premium has most the RX features, is larger, just as comfortable for $10,000 less.

@@rich2puttwell I love the 366 hp and 1800 watt levinson sound system. highlander is nice, but its no RX500h.. I actually did a comparison.. they definitely improved the highlander over last version, I had a 2014 limited.. have a new RX though and love it so far.
