- 2024 Lexus GX550 review by The Straight Pipes. The GX550 Overtrail plus is putting down 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque from a Twin Turbo 3.4L V6. At $102,250 CAD, would you take it over the Land Cruiser?

Its nice to see lexus toning down that damn grill.
and get away from the damn Nike headlight
totally agree! I love Lexus, but I will not buy one with a stupid looking cartoonish grill!
that horrible grill = 💩
😩
Ain't that the truth!
I don’t remember seeing a car and say I want one.
Lexus really did a great job with the gx
No, they did not. 14 MPG in 2024 is atrocious
@@tommy516It’s a huge truck what do you mean what about the new infiniti qx80 it’s the same way lol
@@redhunnid5142 them to not be stupid and use the hybridized version of the motor they are using. 14 MPG with premium gas, GTFO
@@redhunnid5142 Its not a HUGE truck, its a midsize truck. Its not a huge anything.

It's made for average size people, not whales. It's huge
Finally! The reliable G-Wagon
It always was, even in the previous 460!
Yea idk about reliable. Those turbos don't last long....
Well let’s make sure they don’t have the tundra engine self destruction problems first
Let's hold off on the "reliable" part until toyota no longer has a recall on these v6's and has worked out those issues.
Toyota? Reliable? What is this 2018?
Just sat in the base Landcruiser, the interior isn't as bad as reviewers make out to be, yes it's not as nice as the Lexus but it's really not that bad. Plus its a car with no sunroof, cloth seats and equipped with heated seats and heated steering wheel, rear vents and off road tech! Only a few people will ever appreciate that!!!
We loved it
What's so great about cloth seats?
@@superblump87 dont gotta worry about leather care. And they dont get overly hot/cold. I dont hate leather, these are just reasons I hear that make sense.
Yuri, wireless Android Auto and Car Play is so nice. Not having to mess with wires for any drive under an hour is so much nicer.
Regarding the mode-selection dial knob: don’t forget that in Japan they drive on the right! So, (directionally) it’s correct for them! 😊
Was waiting for this exact vehicle review in this exact color/trim from this exact channel. Great video guy!
The GX550 is the best looking SUV out today but I wished they offered it in blue for Overtrail and had more interior color options like red or white like the previous gen. I'm already seeing the GX550s on the road and it's making me jealous. This woul command the MSRP they ask unlike the Land Cruiser (imagine paying 70k+ for a 4 cylinder?)
The fact that the driver can't blink without a chime is hilarious
You can turn it off
The fact that it can be adjusted for sensitivity or even turned off isn’t hilarious but a true story.
@@FCM415consumers being able to program what the purchased? What’s the issue
New cars are such nannys it’s annoying
@@_purge9488That’s right. What is the issue?
I saw a modestly lifted Overtrail in my neighborhood this afternoon. Looks like the 2.5" front/0.75" back preload collar lift from Westcott Designs. It looks AMAZING with that raised and leveled look, and it was still running those stock Toyo AT 33" tires.
I own the Overtrail Plus - the driver monitor got turned off in .083 seconds. Most annoying thing. Besides that it’s a beast - just hope the reliability is as good as previous GXs
Does the driver monitor reactivate when the car is started, or does it stay off? Do lane centering and adaptive cruise control work with it is turned off?
@@TXJ232it does not reactivate . Once the alert is turned off in settings it stays off . And it doesn’t affect any of the driving assist and safety assist technology . I was a technology specialist for Lexus for 2 years and that was the most popular request for me to do once the 23 models came out was to turn off the driver monitor recording alert without taking away traffic jam assist or anything , they make it really easy to do as if they knew that was going to be popular . I Bought a Lexus LC 500 on my last week there stills a huge Lexus fan & enthusiast.
@@TXJ232i would like to know the same question
To be fair, most drivers aren’t going to be constantly looking away from the road as they are doing in this review talking to one another.
Maybe after they replace your engine with the revised one it will be reliable
Toyota gonna dominate the european market too.
Chinese Auto manufactures: Hold my beer.
Toyota has become really expensive especially with their new SUV's pricing most people out.

This thing is gorgeous! Would pick this over a Defender or G Wagon 10 out of 10 times!
Never driven a Defender, huh? Motor in this Toyota product is completely bland
Another crap attempt at copying Defender styling
@@StephenFogarty2023
The Defender is way less reliable and durable than any Lexus
6:31 WHY did I enjoy that cool box joke so much😂😂😂😂
This SUV is simply magnificent!! This will definitely be my next ride. Thank you TSP.
Wow that opening shot going under the bridge looked incredible!
@2:02 had me crying with the grill photo shop...good job bois
Your intros are insane! 🔥
Hands down... GX always.
Glad they decided to continue/bring it back
@2:33 Yuri 'shopped himself to be so so tiny in that group pic! hilarious
I think the LC looks better and has less front overhang. Also like the LC's disconnecting sway bar vs eKDSS, and real physical HVAC buttons vs on screen lame "buttons". BUT the LC doesn't have the V6 and the associated towing capacity (boo). Toyota - PUT THE V6 IN THE LC and I'll buy one, charge me the same as the Lexus if you must (and while you are at it, please redesign the fugly plastic "diaper" on the tow hitch for both these vehicles, it's just gawd-awful and it's not good for towing, which is the point of a tow hitch). Nice review guys 👍.
We settled on the LC FE. everything about this vehicle is more practical, but its a shame its only a 2.4L.
Jacubs watch game is off the charts. Loved the evolution over the years.
Appreciate it
This new design is really cool. Military and mean😠 combo.
They do not make a 3.4 and 3.5 L twin turbo engine its just 3.4 across the board. And yes that one will be part of the recall
Its almost as if Toyota told them to say that! Or at minimum they asked if this was the recalled 3.5 and the Toyota rep just said "No, this is a 3.4L".
Interesting @@TheNotimprezed
This and the Tundra both have the 3.4 V6, although there may be tuning/turbo differences. This is a really compelling vehicle, but I'd wait a bit to make sure the engine drama doesn't spill over into the GX.
i believe the LX already does, yet it's not being publicized. same shared engine. it''s a shame
I was waiting for you guys to review this suv. Thanks!
I cant wait to buy the GX550! Going to be the perfect offroad suv and looking good towing my race car!
6:20 well done jake. That celeb life when your fans want your will autograph. Absolutely incredible reaction. ❤ I cried laughing
With the quality issues Toyota been having lately, it wouldn't surprise me if they announce these engine will also be recalled due the "manufacturing debris". Good looking vehicle tho!
I think its the best option of car for its purpose, reliable, luxurious, capable.. This is a car to buy and hold for years or heck even decades! Gl for thos who can afford it haha😊
Love your reviews and honesty!
Great video! Give the person that chose that intro music a raise 😎
I have been waiting for this review for last couple of months!
This is the most beautiful Lexus I have seen
I see a straight pipes video, I watch it, I like it
This is the way
Dis is da wey
Never heard this comment before🫤
Not an suv guy, but I’ve seen one of these in person and it looks soooo good
The best guys to review cars
It’s the same engine as the 24’ Tundra. Not sure why they’re still calling it 3.5 when it’s technically at 3.4. Only reason it wasn’t included in the recall is because it’s a 24’. Only 22’-24’ are included
OMG IT DOESNT HAVE A GIANT GRILLE
That Nardo Latte colour only looks cool on that car. Wonder if any other current car could pull it off.
Um Tundra is a 3.4L v6 labeled as a 3.5L V6 same engine as the GX
It probably didn't make it on the recall list was due to the fact that this wasn't released yet
Also some folks have had multiple engine failures which leads me to believe that they're really not telling the truth that it's a manufacturing issue instead of a design issue.
While it has the same engine designation, the GX's engine is 'bespoke' in the sense it has smaller turbos than the Tundra, Sequoia or LX (hence less hp, same torque than those engines). It wouldn't be too out of the question that some other internals were changed as well
Supposedly they only washed the blocks twice. The only change I've heard of so far is they started washing them 5 times. Damn EPA requiring water for oil and those small oil galleys make it tough for manufacturers
The point is correct the 3.5 has always been a 3.4.
This isn't the reason why GX wasn't part of the recall.
GX is built in Japan. Tundra is built in TX.
As far as i know Toyota hasn't disclosed why certain 3.4s are not part of recall, like the GX and i-force max Tundra.
Listen to Car Care Nut for the best explanation on the internet.
@@JJJ5.7 Only issue with this is that Lexus was having similar failures in much smaller scale for an obvious sales volume difference and flew under the radar. Also later model year vehicles including 24MY are also exhibiting the same failure which are not part of the recall. Is the LX not built in Japan? They're on the list. As said earlier, this is limited to 22/23 MY hence the GX is excluded from the list. I'm pretty certain that there were folks reporting failure in the hybrid setup in the forums last i checked.
Going to track down the vid that explains the increased failure on the V35A engine with Toyota/Lexus
There is something odd going on with the recall itself and reports of dealers not accepting current gen tundras as tradeins is very very concerning
Same engine, manufacturered in different locations may explain no recall
Yur and Jacob in a Charlotte FC jersey made me smile!! Hope you enjoyed Charlotte, North Carolina.
Been waiting on this review
I dare someone to buy this and park it anywhere in the GTA. I can easily afford the car, I can’t afford the insurance or the medication for the constant anxiety of my wife and kids getting carjacked.
Literally, everyone who drives this car falls in love with it 😂.
I have test driven both the Land Cruiser and GX 550. I have had my 2010 4Runner for almost 14 years. Absolute work horse. So I was leaning Toyota. Both very similar builds and look damn near identical to the naked eye from side vantage. Grill on GX much cleaner look than the iron waffle grill of the Land Cruiser. But to be honest, driving the GX didn't feel like it was worth 15k over the fully loaded Land Cruiser edition for 70k. This video looks like great punch but when I hit it I experienced a serious lag on the GX. I was really disappointed considering its supposed to be so much faster 0-60. Land Cruiser felt quick because of Hybrid combo. Overall, I'm still kind of torn but curious to see how they work out the kinks because I've read bad reviews on performance for GX already. Seems silly to jump the gun till they work it out and possibly release better fuel consumption package down the road. The LC is hands down a better ride for off road capabilities but still has crisp look.
Probably this if we're being honest. The creature comforts are so very worth the surcharge.
Nice brakeboost there.
The hybrid will basically be the Land Cruiser system. It was announced at launch on the Japanese site
If you get anything other than the base land cruiser, you're better off with the base gx550. For 55k for the base land cruiser, that's already a hard sell. The base GX 550 is only 65k and it definitely a value leader.
This! No question about it. Finally a Lexus SUV that looks great! 👍👍👍👍
I just don't think I can give up the V8 in my previous gen Land Crusier. If they came out with the 300 series that wasn't a $120000 LX in the US then maybe we could talk.
Still no V8 in the 300 anyway, just a 400hp version of the same TT V6.
You shouldn’t give it up. Great vehicle.
Lc200 doesnt sell well in the US

I absolutely love lexus suv's, owned an RX350 2022, which got stolen last november outside of a restaurant in scarborough (greater toronto), the only reason why I'm staying away from buying another one is absolutely the reason you stated, its going to end up on a ship (i.e. stolen) in no time. :(
buy this car, lease a range rover
For tax purposes you'd probably be better off doing the opposite 😅
@@lawrencepietschker8473help me understand why? Thanks!
When I watch Yuri launch it in the beginning of the video, I thought to myself "damn that thing is fast" then I realized that the video speed was set to 1.25x lol
FYI The Tundra engine and GX550 engines are the same. Both 3.4L V35A-FTS
The GX engine is built in Japan though and is bespoke. But yes essentially the same.
@@FCM415 thanks for clarifying! I did not know that.
@@FCM415 exactly
Which is a good or bad news ?
@@reyjazz-u8p Japan factories are much more established and with engineers/workers with decades of experience. Less likely hood of defects on new products? American facilities are great too but Toyota made their reputation off the Japanese plants
I’m surprised with Yuri’s bad back that he didn’t test out the massage seats. I know they’re buried in the screen but I wanted to know how good they are since the seats are missing up and down lumbar.
Gloss black is fine… it’s FINE!
Yuri “it’s nice” as he holds on to dear life through cliche corner
This thing is pretty sick. Love the looks and styling. Honestly for $65K that’s not really that bad for everything you get. Nice job Lexus.
Good luck finding one off the lot f or 65k
amazing content gentlemen
One review I read(Josh's Japanese cars or something like that) said it was very rollie pollie when driving - not very stable in cornering too. Doesn't sound like great handling on the streets to me.
Soft suspension with no KDSS.
You could talk more about the towing features like what the hitch & tow vehicle plug-in are like (there's a big black cover over what I assume is the hitch apparatus), brake gain control and the upper limits of the tongue weight at the hitch. Also, the suspension options across the line of GX 550's and which would be best for towing. Thx!
Oh man, I need this thing. Hopefully I can pick one up in a few years.
I know someone who would love this 😌 it looks good
Damn I like the look of that.

Im going to get one but after the hype cools down, Im seeing the base models going for 45k above the “Build your own” price
My favorite SUV right now
Hope y'all enjoyed Charlotte and brought back enough Bojangles biscuits to open a franchise in the GTA! 😉
It’s a gorgeous vehicle! Excellent review! But…there are no vents in the rear for the second or third row on the overtrail and overtrail +. What’s that about?! Cmon Lexus! 👍 Annd why do you only get a 270 mile gas tank range and no matter how you drive and what drive modes you are in?. They say, because it has a hybrid battery, Lexus had to shrink the gas tank?. Okay, but why does the range suck?! It’s a Hybrid right? Better gas mileage, right?!
Those EPA estimates that are reported are not accurate. I was excited! Who would want to go off road and run out of gas? Not me! Haha @Lexususa please fix these issues.
i saw one, and it looked awesome

I like getting the key from my pocket to drive my vehicle. Less to worry about being stolen from a parking lot.
Good thing Lexus specially developed the tires with Toyo specifically for the 550. I’ve yet to see anyone bring Conti’s A/T offroad
they're 'oe' speced ones so won't be as good as the ones you can buy but still great nonetheless
