Hi Morten, nice overview of m3p! Thanks for time on E3-2175L. Altogether a decent performing, inexpensive, solid little box I am making into a remote weather microserver.
this maxes out with the 4790k , i have been using one with that cpu for 3 yrs now. the main limitation 65w powersupply which i replaced with a 130w dell 19.5v power supply spliced to the lenevo cable . the cpu thermal throttles at 70w tdp. with liquid metal on cpu die and ihs.
Also. I've just recently finished a project that you might appreciate! I had an older Dell Precision 690 laying around. These machines were designed to be workstations, but the motherboard supports Dual Xeon CPUs, and have 8 slots for RAM. It also has a 750-Watt PSU! I ordered: Two (2) Xeon 5160 (dual 3GHz cores) CPUs 32GB of PC667 DDR2 ECC RAM (8 x 4GB) Intel Pro 1000MT Dual gigabit NIC (PCI-Express) IBM Serveraid M1015 SAS/SATA Raid Controller (with RAID-5 dongle) 5x Hitachi Ultrastar 7k3000 (2tb Enterprise HDD) (7.2TB RAID-5) PNY CS1311 128gb SSD (for boot) It's running Zentyal Community edition, and is my and my roommate's firewall/router/torrent/NAS machine. It is an awesome bit of kit. We spent a grand total of $360 USD on it. It weighs a ton, too!
A successful experiment. I really enjoyed the video, thanks for making it. I would suggest getting a larger power brick to go along with the higher TDP of the CPU, I would shoot for a 90/95w brick if you can fine one, just to avoid brownout issues.
I thinks it's easier to just look at the small half circle "cut outs" on the sides on the CPU than the triangle. The socket has matching "pins" for them so that you can "only" place the CPU a certain way.
Intel M cpus are mobile cpus, T means power optimized, with low power consumption. When you upgrade your cpu you should stay with the same TDP, sure you can get a "bigger" power supply, but cooling and the motherboard weren't desinged for that power. There are i5 even i7 cpus with 35W TDP.
Hi Bence Gábor Slezák Thank You very much! I am typing from this PC,, form the video,, it an older video but it still runs, and I did not change the power supply. Thank you for watching! :-)
Most of the time I am not using much of the performances, but no if I started to stress the CPU over more than just a few seconds, it might start throttling,, Nah I just tested,, it ran good for over a minute,, noisy but it ran. TDP 54W
@@MyPlayHouse Nice video. I had many of these on a network for 5 years , ours were all I5-xxxxT and I7-xxxxT cpus. All of those Ts are mobile and dual core unlike desktop I7s. That said, I really liked these, If your desktop cpu mod is working, good for you. Bence is technically right, but I don't think it would affect the other components much more than an unmodified one. Keep the fan intake and exhaust clean, failing fans and failed fans seem to be the biggest killer of these M93s.
it would be funny if he went through all the trouble to try and replace the CPU and found it was soldered to the motherboard like a laptop CPU is. Either way, I love this channel and currently own a Dell Poweredge R300 with 24GB RAM and a Xeon X3323
Hi Maxwell Isenberg Well if it was soldered on,, I might have been a much shourter video, or no video at all :-/ I do check a little bit before i start, and did find that the CPU was a LGA 1150, so there shout be a socket :-) Thank You very much! glad you liked the video :-) Thank you for watching! :-)
HI Welcome aboard, do go back and see my older videos, there is a lot of PC/Server stuff, that you might like,, and don't be afraid to ware our the like button :-) Thank you for watching! :-)
I believe that reason why you don't get the intended score is because the new processor is thermal throttling - after all, that tiny heatsink was not designed to dissapate 20 additional watts (more than 60%) more than original CPU. These tiny clients are not meant to be upgraded with powerful components. After all - people who initially designed these are tiny bit smarter than all of us here in comments combined, and they knew what components will give the most bang for buck/watt/volume space. :)
Hi This is very posable! all the CPU's that they have for this model is 35W and I gut in a 54W,,, 19W more. Not sure if it's the cooling or the power it's missing. Thank you for watching! :-)
As a matter of interest - you can use CPU-Z or similar tool to see processor temperatures and voltages in real time. Launch it in background of Passmark, and It will answer question why CPU is not performing as it should.

I think it would be cool , especially for that is now beginning , show the importance of each (hz) processing. Shows some cool charts there for us hehe
Mine came with an i5-4570t so about the same speed, nice little box to tinker with. Had a mac mini and hated it, this one is easy to swap out all the components.
The current is being throttled. I put a i5 4690k in my m93 tiny, Intel extreme tuning shows throttling happens and forces the 4690k(88tdp) to run at 52 tdp. Bought a 120w power supply but the board itself throttles it down. Not too bothered by it though, as this tiny is super fast with it and the 4690k was lying around with no use.
Hi Alex V Thank You very much! You also have all the voltages regulators on the system board,, and the big power supply does not help them. Thank you for watching! :-)

You can install an i7 4760hq and that will give you intel iris pro graphics 5200. That alone doubles the Gpu quality and geek bench. If it wont boot or gives error then you need to update the bios with the old cpu first. There is a list of CPUs that are supported and its found on the lenovo website under notes for m93p support.
You are correct and incorrect,,,they are making them now with 1150 LGA socket for mobile and desktop. Watch this linus link. forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=346041. Hi gregoriodia Thank You very much! but I got a new Lenovo M75q with AMD Ryzen 5 just two weeks ago - glad you liked the video :-) Thank you for watching! :-)
Which fan (cooling / blower) model/brand is the most silent? Oh and where did you get yours. Not sure Lenovo original (part number 03T9950) is the quietest.
do you have a watt meter you could test under full load & idle just looking at doing something like that for the bedroom if its extreme low watt and dead quite. Keep the great video's coming including house projects. I'm a server guy myself. Question whats the next server project? Also when do you think the socket for that Asus board will be 3 months? China is nice but way too slow shipping.
I upgraded my M93 Pentium G3240T (2.7GHz fixed clock, no turbo) to a Core i5-4690T which is 45W TDP. I noticed your cooler is an older revision as my one has an extra block of metal over the heat pipe, even my cooler gets quite warm up to about 86c during benchmarks, with one of the 4 cores throttling. I added some copper RAM heatsinks on top of the cooler and cut away some of the black plastic that sits at the front of the heatsink to add 3 more which should help soak up more heat. Worth upgrading those Pentiums to at least an i3 as you get faster 1666MHz RAM and improved GPU. It is not worth upgrading to an i7 as those are still expensive and not that much quicker than the i5-4690T which only costs about £45.
Do you set the fan to full speed, or to best thermal control. I've tried both and only when set at full speed does it keep up. But full speed is too loud for an office. This is with the reccomended top end i-7 CPU...In both the units here it reaches 85c +, which for me is just too hot. I have an M700 coming, so anxious to see if it's any better. There are also a couple TH-cam videos that show a heat sink that mounts right on the CPU with the fan at the back. I am going to look into that as well.
hello - i wonder if you would be able to answer a question. I have the M900 i7 - Type 10FM I want to add thunderbolt connectivity - anyway i can. I do not think there is any room inside, but perhaps you may know of possible solutions? Thank you I enjoy your videos. Even though they are usually way beyond me, i find myself watching them from start to finish. Thank you,, Aaron
How are the CPU temperatures? The original CPU has a TDP of 35 watts, so the cooling solution probably caters to a CPU of that TDP. The CPU you replaced it with has a 54 watt TDP, so it might run hotter. I am just curious, as this might have some bearing on your performance (as it may throttle the CPU to keep it cool). I love your videos, by the way. Keep up the good work!!
Hi I just did now want to use the time to reinstall it. I do think i have wasted the same time getting the sound and webcam up and running,, but well :-/ Thank you for watching! :-)
Hey! Thanks for sharing this video :) I'm planning to do that as well in an incoming free weekend of mine. Did you encountered any issues with your newly installed 4170 after all? Have you tried upgrading the psu? I'm planning to upgrade to a more powerful i5 (65W), maybe I should move to a 90w psu then !
Hi Yes I want to try it with a powermeter,,, that might be coming! OR it runs slower because he temperature is to high,, but the fan does not seams to run full speed. ?? Thank you for watching! :-)
I'm looking at swapping out the G3220T that's in my machine for something beefier, did you experience any issues with a more (comparatively) power hungry CPU?
Liked this video. very nice. Dangerous question. With the "T" processor, did you try running it without a fan? I am curious because the M600 tiny has no fans, I kinda want to know if i can run this with no fan (at my own risk).
I have a Lenovo M700 Tiny and I think I'll try replacing my CPU on that as well. It has an i3-6100t currently and it has been hard finding a lower power "T" processor to replace it with so I might try a regular one thanks to this video. Any long term issues with heat or anything?
That CPU in this video used a bit to much power,, and the M93 was a bit noisy,, I ran it for years, but I did another CPU swap in this video : th-cam.com/video/oKmo6btWp0s/w-d-xo.html you might find that interesting. I am typing from that now.
Nice to see an up to date comment. I am considering changing my i3-6100T too but I was worried about longevity since it would probably ran hotter and put more pressure to the MB/PSU because it uses more power than what was originally intended for these systems
hello sir, I had a question will Lenovo ThinkCentre M73(Model No- A1T4lH) support intel i3 processor in CPU, And it has an Intel Pentium G3240T 2.70GHz Processor . This model is of 2013 I want to upgrade it and want to learn photo and video editing in it.
HI soccerzockt The manual said that this port was only usable for a wifi card... would be cool with a Ninja hack external GPU. Thank you for watching! :-)
My PlayHouse Maybe only a wificard fits in there, but any sort of M.2 or mPcie should provide pcie lanes for a graphicscard. You can use your awesome Ninja hacks to extend the pcie lanes to an external graphicscard.
I found this video because i have a m73 mini and dropped in a i3 4170 54w. I wanted to double check before starting a fire lol. Good to know its still working 👍 🇨🇦
HIYes I want to try it with a powermeter,,, that video might be coming! OR it runs slower because he temperature is to high,, but the fan does not seams to run full speed. ?? Thank you for watching! :-)
the fan is getting too noisy, even I have no application running, with both windows and ubuntu. is it possible for a better cooling system. like better fan or something like that
Hi I have M73 model and can't find drivers for Windows Server. I tryed all drivers what I find for win 7,8,8.1. and 10 and not working any. I have Ethernet card "l217-V", anyboady can help me? :-)
I need to d See the cpu so i know if i can transfer the cpu to a new motherboard because im thinking of getting one of those to save money on a cpu and ram

Morten, are you still using this 3.7GHz processor in your Lenovo M93 or have you switched to another Lenovo Tiny PC? I just ordered a Lenovo M900 with an I5 6500 processor and hope to get it before the weekend and I was watching this old video because I am thinking about changing the I5 to a I7 after I get it and it comes with 8gb ram and I will see how well it works before I start upgrading. I just want to have a small utility PC to play with and I remembered you upgraded the CPU in one of your Lenovo PC's.
Hi Sir! I wanna buy this machine as my mediacentre, so it is good for videoplayback? I wanted a machine that was small for my mediacentre and then I found this machine at Refurb.dk if they also will do a good job on cleaning it.... my TV is 1280x720 so I think it is fine so what do you think about it for videoplayback in maybe an hour or so?
Hi JBL Bass Tester I am sure it will do a good job at that,, there are even smaller PC's ,, see the video I did on the "Cenovo" tiny PC. Thank you for watching! :-)
Just curious (and maybe this has been asked already), but why do you use Windows Server 2012? Why not Windows 7 or 10? (BTW, I love your videos! After I've watched them actively, I put them in my "things to listen to while falling asleep" playlist, because the music you have in the background paired with your voice helps me to sleep.)
HI This PC came with Win8, it was reinstalled with Server 2012R2,, and I just thought I would keep it to get more familiar with it :-) You listen to me when you need to sleep :-) well I guess i get more views :-) But turn me off before you go watch porn! :-) Thank you for watching! :-)

HI Faster CPU, uses more power (unless it a newer generation) and therefore more heat. The fan runs a bit more. But really not that bad, still a very silence server. Thank you for watching! :-)
Hi Renton Free Thank You very much! It depends on how much power and cooling is available. Often you can google what the biggest CPU for your laptop model is,, and get that! Thank you for watching! :-)
Thank you so much! Your the only channel that has responded. Could you find a laptop for parts and replace the CPU, ram, and ssd? You would need a CPU with the same wattage or lower so it wouldn't mess up the battery. I am thinking about doing this but finding a laptop with a CPU that used a crazy amount of wattage and building in that. I would also need the make sure it was the right motherboard socket. Do you think it would work? Thanks!
Hi Renton Free I think you are misunderstanding,, I have a TH-cam channel, not a hot line for PC problems,, I do not know what a CL15-C1310 is! I show what I do on my channel,, and in this video I have a Tiny PC and i put in a faster CPU. There are hardware forums, where they do not do anything else, then chat hardware. Thank You very much! but I got a new Lenovo M75q with AMD Ryzen 5 just two weeks ago - glad you liked the video :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
Which fan (cooling / blower) model/brand is the most silent?
Oh and where did you get yours.
Not sure Lenovo original (part number 03T9950) is the quietest.
I am not sure, there is many choices?
do you have a watt meter you could test under full load & idle just looking at doing something like that for the bedroom if its extreme low watt and dead quite. Keep the great video's coming including house projects. I'm a server guy myself. Question whats the next server project? Also when do you think the socket for that Asus board will be 3 months? China is nice but way too slow shipping.
HI
The Asus socket video is ready to be made,, I just need the time. :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
Great vid Morten.
What are the temperatures like with the higher TDP processor?
Hi
The fan runs more so, a bit higher for sure! I did not have a look,, I will in a later video.
Thank you for watching! :-)
the way this guy apply thermal paste make me feel uncomfortable
Hi Vu Le
Well You are always welcome to do it your way..
Thank you for watching! :-)
I did a new upgrade, nit that long ago : th-cam.com/video/oKmo6btWp0s/w-d-xo.html You might like that.
I do not remember, but it was never that noisy,, if it was working hard I could hear it.
@@MyPlayHouse I figured out why mine was running so hot. Someone set the number of processors to 4, when in the I-5 there are only two cores.
hello - i wonder if you would be able to answer a question.
I have the M900 i7 - Type 10FM
I want to add thunderbolt connectivity - anyway i can. I do not think there is any room inside, but perhaps you may know of possible solutions?
Thank you I enjoy your videos. Even though they are usually way beyond me, i find myself watching them from start to finish.
Thank you,,
Aaron
Sorry,, I do not know that model :-/
I'm running a Intel Xeon CPU E3-1265L v3 @ 2.50GHz × 4 all ok
also a good choices :-)
How are the CPU temperatures? The original CPU has a TDP of 35 watts, so the cooling solution probably caters to a CPU of that TDP. The CPU you replaced it with has a 54 watt TDP, so it might run hotter. I am just curious, as this might have some bearing on your performance (as it may throttle the CPU to keep it cool).
I love your videos, by the way. Keep up the good work!!
Hi Steven Fayne Speer
Thank You very much! I think I have a problem,, I am planing to try some better thermal paste.
Thank you for watching! :-)
My PlayHouse I'm interested to see if that will have any effect, so I'll watch for a follow-up.
Cheers!
I'm curious as why youre running a server OS as your desktop OS?
Hi
I just did now want to use the time to reinstall it.
I do think i have wasted the same time getting the sound and webcam up and running,, but well :-/
Thank you for watching! :-)
Why don't you use Linux?
Hi Frank Harding
I'v never been a Linux person, and my work place is 99,9-ish % Windows, so all kind of problems.
Hey Morten :) Results might be accurate if you turn off all apps in case skype i see in a taskbar is working. Just a little advice :)
HI
Yes I have also seen that messing up my results from time to time.
Thank you for watching! :-)
You did it! Awesome!
How is the powersupply holding?
Hi
Thanx,, it seems to be doing good :-) I made this video 10 days back,, It has been running both weekends.
Thank you for watching! :-)
Hey! Thanks for sharing this video :)
I'm planning to do that as well in an incoming free weekend of mine.
Did you encountered any issues with your newly installed 4170 after all? Have you tried upgrading the psu?
I'm planning to upgrade to a more powerful i5 (65W), maybe I should move to a 90w psu then !
I am still using it,, and it has been working fine,, mine has a TDP of 54W and I think also the power converters inside the PC can be a bottleneck.
@@MyPlayHouse Thanks! I will consider upgrading the psu then :)
Awesome 😎
Hi H2SO4BLACK BLACKWATER
Thank You very much! glad you liked the video :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
Have you measured the difference in power usage?
Can the CPU see the power supply of 65W and maybe work slower?
Hi
Yes I want to try it with a powermeter,,, that might be coming!
OR it runs slower because he temperature is to high,, but the fan does not seams to run full speed. ??
Thank you for watching! :-)
Thank you for Sharing - 👍👍😎😎👍👍
Hi Philly Cable Dave
Thank You very much! glad you liked the video :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
im thinking you might be loosing some points with thermal throttling. you should run the benchmark again and watch your temps with coretemp
HI
Yes and I will also use a power meter, and see if this is my problem,, Thanx!Thank you for watching! :-)
Is it me, or when he showed the CPU the font looked kinda off. You sure its not a counterfeit?
I have no reason to think it was fake,, but I did replaces it not long ago, with something even better : th-cam.com/video/oKmo6btWp0s/w-d-xo.html
indeed it's a bit of a husswell
Hi
Haswell? what do you mean?
Thank you for watching! :-)
My PlayHouse it's a pun. because of the pronunciation of hustle and Haswell.
Hi, are there any quad core i5/i7 compatibles.?...instead of the i3. Thanks, great video!
Hi Dad Papa
I think I did see that,, but they did not offer me enough extra speed, to be worth the extra money.
Thank you for watching! :-)
I tend to agree. The i3 you put in has VERY GOOD single thread performance. Better than most i5s.
I7 4750hq 1150LGA. $101.99 on Ebay.
I'm looking at swapping out the G3220T that's in my machine for something beefier, did you experience any issues with a more (comparatively) power hungry CPU?
Hi David Duffill
Yes,, it makes some more noise..
Thank you for watching! :-)
My PlayHouse ah noise isn't too bad as it's in an open room. Temperatures ok in comparison? My little G3220T just isn't man enough to cope :(
Hi.. I have tiny pc with i7 13th gen running. Can we replace the heatsink and fan with a custom solution, say using an air cooler by noctua
Sorry I do really not know.
Liked this video. very nice. Dangerous question. With the "T" processor, did you try running it without a fan? I am curious because the M600 tiny has no fans, I kinda want to know if i can run this with no fan (at my own risk).
Hi Nelson Chow
Thank You very much! It needs that fan,, when it does somthing heavy!! it really spines up.
Thank you for watching! :-)
My PlayHouse how's the pcie?Optiplex only supports 35watt gpu..i plan to purchase either this or the optiplex
I have a Lenovo M700 Tiny and I think I'll try replacing my CPU on that as well. It has an i3-6100t currently and it has been hard finding a lower power "T" processor to replace it with so I might try a regular one thanks to this video.
Any long term issues with heat or anything?
That CPU in this video used a bit to much power,, and the M93 was a bit noisy,, I ran it for years, but I did another CPU swap in this video : th-cam.com/video/oKmo6btWp0s/w-d-xo.html
you might find that interesting. I am typing from that now.
Nice to see an up to date comment. I am considering changing my i3-6100T too but I was worried about longevity since it would probably ran hotter and put more pressure to the MB/PSU because it uses more power than what was originally intended for these systems
You are going from 35W TDP to 54W. Don't you run into issue with CPU being throttled down?
I think I did,, but it only uses that amount of power when working max,, and that is not often,, so it was still a win.
hello sir, I had a question will Lenovo ThinkCentre M73(Model No- A1T4lH) support intel i3 processor in CPU,
And it has an Intel Pentium G3240T 2.70GHz Processor . This model is of 2013 I want to upgrade it and want to learn photo and video editing in it.
Sorry,, I do not know about the M73,, I only know the M93
On the same PC is it possible to upgrade with CORE I5 4590?
I hear it is possible,, but I would go closer to the 35Watt that this is made for.
@@MyPlayHouse My power supply input is 65w
Next upgrade: Put a graphicscard in that case. That would be a nice challenge for your crafting skills
HiDo I have to connect it to anything :-) that would be a problem.
Thank you for watching! :-)
does it have a PCI-Express port, if it has one you could use a PCI-express to PCI x16 adapter
My PlayHouse What about the wificard-slot or M.2? Can't you use an adapter?
HI soccerzockt
The manual said that this port was only usable for a wifi card... would be cool with a Ninja hack external GPU.
Thank you for watching! :-)
My PlayHouse Maybe only a wificard fits in there, but any sort of M.2 or mPcie should provide pcie lanes for a graphicscard. You can use your awesome Ninja hacks to extend the pcie lanes to an external graphicscard.
Can I install Intel Core i7 on it? Or any other prossesor?Liked the video btw!!
Hi Faddu Raja
I do not think so,, I am stretching it with 54Watt :-/
Thank you for watching! :-)
Sure try the i7 4790 quad core. I dont believe it would be slower, just cost more for the cpu.
Hi. What temperatures did you get? Do you remember? Thanks
No sorry I do not,, if it´s not in the video,, it is lost :-/
Could I ask is the fan loud? I'm considering getting the i3 or i5 model.
No they are very quite,, when I put in this more power hungry CPU,, it became a bit more loud.
do you think this thinkstation can be update to a microprocessor able to support AVX(advanced vector extension), I'm trying to run tensorflow
Hi Jose Garcia
Sorry I do not know! glad you liked the video :-)

TDP is how much heat it makes measured in Watts.
Nice video though.

any updates? Is it still working well?
Yes still running every day!
I found this video because i have a m73 mini and dropped in a i3 4170 54w. I wanted to double check before starting a fire lol. Good to know its still working 👍 🇨🇦
maybe try to purchase a 120w power supply, because this CPU seems like its definitly throtteling! Maybe by the missing power, maybe by the heat!
HIYes I want to try it with a powermeter,,, that video might be coming!
OR it runs slower because he temperature is to high,, but the fan does not seams to run full speed. ??

the fan is getting too noisy, even I have no application running, with both windows and ubuntu. is it possible for a better cooling system. like better fan or something like that
Hi K K
Thank You very much! I am still running is,, yes if I work it hard,, it´s more noisy.

I did a case mod and added a slim 120mm akasa fan to the side. Reduced temps by 9 degrees.

HI
Yes, faster CPU, uses more power (unless it a newer generation) and therefore more heat.
The fan runs a bit more.

Is it possible to put a i5 or i7 processor of the 4th generation ? Any info ?

Thank you for watching! :-)
Thank you so much! Your the only channel that has responded. Could you find a laptop for parts and replace the CPU, ram, and ssd? You would need a CPU with the same wattage or lower so it wouldn't mess up the battery. I am thinking about doing this but finding a laptop with a CPU that used a crazy amount of wattage and building in that. I would also need the make sure it was the right motherboard socket. Do you think it would work? Thanks!
