The Lenovo ThinkCentre M710q Tiny is a small (around 1L) desktop PC that offers a lot of performance in a compact and lower-cost package. In this video, we look at some of the key features of the platform. We get inside the system and see what features Lenovo has to make it serviceable. We discuss some of the differences between this system from Lenovo, other Lenovo offerings, and some of those from competitors such as HP.

Can attest to everything he said here. I also have like around 15 of these HP and Lenovo systems. Haven't opened a Dell one yet tho, I'll get a Dell machine next.
I would like to suggest that you include the 4th gen i7 in your graph as many of these systems still come with those and getting like 32 GB ram for ddr3 is much cheaper if you wanna run certain types of servers.
Furthermore, I would like to know if there are any mini PCs like this that support ECC.
    Thanks man!

@Patrick, can you look into the cooling solution quality/noise level of the different systems.
From the video the Lenovo looks to have lower quality fan than the HP.
Is there a difference in cooling solution between the elite desks and the prodesks of the same generation?
Should I repaste my system or is it not worth it? ( I was that lucky guy who obtained a Prodesk 400 G4 for EU 250,-).

Was recently looking for something like this to plug a Lenovo ThinkVision M14 portable monitor into. Turns out I need DP Alt-mode USB-C to make it work, which isn’t common unless the PC has Thunderbolt or a mobile chipset/cpu. So in this size, that’s Intel NUC or Asus PN50 with Ryzen 4000 renoir CPUs. Wondering how often businesses chose to get the Thunderbolt option when available. Of course, that doesn’t guarantee the iGPU has its DisplayPort connected to Thunderbolt....

Can you put a USB-C port in one of the expansion slots and would is work with all the expected capabilities?
I see people selling USB-C ports that would fit in the slot and seem to have the correct connector to attach to the motherboard but I don’t know if the motherboard itself would support such a device, and/or if it would have limited capabilities.

Just double-check the connections in the back to ensure you have the right ones for your monitors, but all of these TMM models are designed to support at least two monitors.

something unrelated to these tiny desktops, but Lenovo retired all their DC networking gear. Any idea if a refresh is coming or they are out of the network altogether? it's a shame to throw away all the BNT stuff, these switches are rock solid and they are a breeze to manage using ansible. If I remember correctly they said they will be launching a new networking portfolio and that was in 2019...

I've enjoyed these peeks at the tiny/mini/micro PCs. My plan is to use older SFF systems (like the Dell Optiplex SFF systems) to create a homelab. I had not planned to go as small as these because I would like to be able to drop expansion cards in. These videos are starting to shift that a bit.

These are awesome as little, silent and cheap cluster nodes! Testing Kubernetes or ESXi on a stack of these is far more pleasant than on a bunch of old servers -- for the simple fact that these boot in seconds instead of minutes+ on your average entry level "brand name" server.

    • @randallsmith2521

I have an old Dell Precision T7500 that I'm setting up as my home server now. I installed a Dell Perc H310 in it. That combined with the built in SAS controller made boots super long... Of course, I've flashed the H310 to IT mode now so it's not as bad.

If i'm not wrong you could not notice the performace difference between 6th and 7th generation. But of course you will do if you pass from 4 threads to 8 threads. Go "cpubenchmark" and compare them. I will go definitely with the i7. In addition, both Lenovos you could change the Bios and accept different generations of CPUs

Patrick, I hope you see this... New to the channel, I just acquired an M710q , but my question concerns the M700, I have an i5 with 16gb ram, and use this as a "headless ROON server" will I get an "Improvement" with an upgrade to "32gb's" ? I have reached out to the ROON forums, nothing yet (2 weeks) generally speaking what is the "importance" of system ram on a server? Thanks

    • @ServeTheHomeVideo
      @ServeTheHomeVideo  ปีที่แล้ว

I have no idea on the ROON server side, but generally more RAM means more applications can be run, more VMs, and more can be cached to limit disk access. If 32GB is cheap, it is not a bad idea. Maybe check out the server and just do a free -mh or something to at least see if you are using 16GB?

This was all a single take but it is edited to cut out pauses and such. The AMD-Xilinx + Marvell-Inphi video was actually done on two different days since the second deal got announced as we were finishing the video for the first. With the new studio, we can do multiple takes and have them match without issue.
All of the product shots are of course done separately since those use different cameras/ angles and some time is spent setting them up.
