Cabot Trail, Cape Breton - The Long Way Round ( motorcycle BMW G650 GS )

  • I packed up my BMW G650 GS motorcycle on the August Long Weekend and headed for the Cabot Trail. With only 4 days to complete the round trip from Ottawa, ON to Meat Cove, Cape Breton ( the northern most tip of Nova Scotia ) it was a long hard ride. Day one I put on 1000KM making it to Muncton, NB. Day two was an easy 800KM across and up the east cost of the Cabot Trail landing in Meat Cove for the night ( www.meatcovecampground.ca/ ). Waking up on day three it was simply a breath taking 800KM down the west coast of the Cabot Trail and back to Muncton, NB. The final day was a backbreaking 13hours and 1000KM back to Ottawa,ON! So many stories, places seen ( as I drove by ), just a beautiful place to be.

    I went camping in Canada when I was a kid (15 years old,about 37 years ago). My father, towing a 25" camper took Cabots Trail . I remember seeing motorcycles along the way. Now at age 52, riding my bike along Cabots Trail is on my bucket list! Thanks for the video and the memories!!! PEACE AND SAFE RIDING!

    Makes me homesick!! I've done the trail so many times since I was a kid it is forever embeded in my soul!! My heart is in Cape Breton!! Thank you!! Awesome video!!

    Thank you! I am from Cape Breton and I love being able to see where I've been as a boy growing up. I spent some time at Ingnoish and at Black Brook and traveling the trail and going back to Ben Eion or spending time with relations in Big Pond before going back to Glace Bay, and after that the summer is over.
    Again, thank you for the bike tour and I am glad you played it safe during the whole trip.

    Glad I fell on this one!! I live on this wonderful splendor in Chéticamp and this video just proves why we are the best road to travel! I do highly suggest however to take 4-6 days to travel the Cabot Trail...take it all in, enjoy every corner (there are many). Stop for a whale cruise, enjoy the beaches, the scenery, the theatre, the culture.... I love this video....and lord knows....bucket list items have a way of repeating themselves, no harm in crossing it off twice! ;0)

    Hi Ian,
    I have a website dedicated to the Trail! I'd like to share that the Simpsons on the lawn represent an odd but genuine story of a Nova Scotian Family. A grandmother challenged and encouraged her grandson to finish a certain part of school or trade school. Upon graduation, he made her Homer and Marge. She loved them and put them on her front lawn. Each one was made and gifted to her to show his love for her. The more characters, the more his respect to all his elders. Cute, eh?

    We'll done Ian ! I'm a re-located Cape Bretoner (Calgary), have done the Trail many times in my life, but never on a Bike, I do plan on heading back that way, sooner than later, and I'm sure to do it then, on my new2012 Triumph Bonneville

    Just watched the video again and keep coming back to it. 4 weeks from today, I'll be northbound from New Jersey, USA for my fourth time up there. I really dig when you pull over and we see your face. I know that grin very well. Of course, after I read your reply I've been surfing the Contour site and may go with the Contour Roam and get the side mount for the helmet. My God, I can't wait. I may share this video on the Nova Scotia Motorcycle Tour Guide page on Facebook if you don't mind.

    Really enjoyed this. We were up there (from Florida) in 2008. Been wanting to get back but so far haven't been able. Went up to Pleasant Bay and back. Not enough time to go all the way around. Maybe next time? Recognized a lot of places. Glad the Simpson figures were still there. Thanks for posting.

If your down this way again sometime and want someone to ride with drop me line. I have a couple of GoPros as well so we could get some really cool videos of our bikes in action.

PEI could be added in as well, beautiful province especially during spring planting of crops. Moncton, NB is a neat city with great music concerts on Magnetic Hill, maybe you coasted your bike up hill there?? Come back to the Maritimes anytime, love our tourists who share their experiences.Thanks for the beautifully done video.

However, I did clockwise day 1 (Aug 20) and counter clockwise the next day (Sunday August 21). Ride was amazing. I lucked out and the weather was amazing. Usually that close to the coast the weather can go either way. As for accommodations there are a ton of amazing B&Bs as well as hotels/motels along the way. I myself stayed at the Meat Cove campground at the northern tip. Road conditions are some of the best I have ever ridden.

That stop at meat cove looked really nice would you have done that road on a cruiser? How many days was your trip? Hi Ian, what a great trip!! My name is Marcelo and I'm from Brazil and I also have a g650gs bemmer. Although, lately I've been obsessed about trading in my bike with a larger model like 1200gs or even a 800s adv. My greatest concern is about the comfort when riding long distances and the fuel range. I've been planning to take a trip from a Sao Paulo to Ushuaia, which is about 13.000km. I love my bike! It's great in the city, great on offroad (I have the Karoo 3 tyres at the moment), and great in short trips. I just wonder if you could give any advice on that. Thank you!

    • @saccomarcelo
      @saccomarcelo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a great bike. Specially because I've been riding for just a year and a half and I'm still improving my off road skills. I have attended a couple of off road courses and I noticed that my bike can overcome obstacles much easier than the bigger bikes in the mud, sand, gravel and steady hills... I guess there is nothing wrong about taking advantage of that. I'll keep you posted and thanks for your answer.

    Hello Ian,
    I notice some unpaved roads - were those your choice rides or can they be avoided ? I dont have a GS like you - I have a Goldwing and its not that crazy about unpaved roads !
    Also - can u just pop in and get these B&B places or do you have to book in advance ?
    Thank you,

    • @ibothwell
      @ibothwell  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      R Jay The unpaved roads are only the ones leading up to the Cove at the northern tip for camping. The entire Cabot trail is paved so no worries there. As for the hotels and places to stay I would for sure just call ahead to make sure they are not booking up. The trail itself if you start out early in the morning will not even take you the entire day. So if you want to take is slow and do the trail in both directions look online and find a place or two you like and book in advance.
      Have a great trip.
