Imagine seeing the equivalent interview these days - amazing access and performance
This is a lesson to today’s sports stars, so called Celebs and politicians to have the cahones and backbone to speak honestly and candidly and actually answer the questions put to them. I remember this interview at the time and it was literally jaw dropping and compulsive viewing. Bless Clough for his spunk in actually agreeing to this interview. Legend... overused term but not in this case !
It’ll never happen me macgee. Children are taught in schools now to always watch what they say and never speak their minds unless it’s following the zombie tradition of political leftist agendas. To speak out means to get cancelled and upset a load of some brainless dicks. That’s why cloughie and his likes will never be again. Sad isn’t it.

@@ivangamez9773 I recently seen an interview with Quentin Tarantino where he answered reasonable questions but simply refused to answer cheeky or prying questions and told the interviewer he was this monkey . THATS the correct way to deal with outrageous personal questions 👍🏴

Well if the players aren't going to play for the manager, there's nothing you can do. The board would have been absolutely retarded to push on, knowing the players won't play for Clough

Doubts about Eddie Gray's fitness? He got kicked so much because he was such a brilliant player, but he was still playing for Leeds NINE years later! Two fantastic managers. Bless 'em both. Leeds were magnificent in 1973-4. I really enjoyed Brian's Derby (the boy Hinton, or was it Hector? etc). Turned Forest into a fantastic passing side, almost the Barcelona of their day. Great memories!

I remember watching this when it first screened and thinking how 'opposite' to one another Brian Clough and Don Revie appeared during this interview.
Watching it now, I can't help but notice that Brian actually had a great deal of respect for Don. He obviously saw him as the big cheese amongst managers at the time and he desperately wanted to emulate or better what Revie had achieved. There was something cartoonish about his attitude not just to Revie at this time but to all other managers which was part of his style but sometimes over the top.
It was only when he stopped being a TV Celebrity and he concentrated on being a football manager with Peter Taylor again that he achieved the same sort of accolades that Revie had at Leeds.
Very true. Brian Clough had respect for Don Revie's achievements. Something happened in a previous fixture that Clough never forgot or got over. But the sack and the experience at Brighton was sobering for him. In his own words he matured after that and came back as a supreme manager and definitely surpassed Don's achievements. Clough would only have succeeded at Leeds had he had chance to clear the lot out and rebuild but that was never going to happen

Brian referred to him as " Mr Revie " and again as "Don" then Don Revie says he won't refer to him as" Clough " As history proves big mistake Leeds 🙄

I think this was a pivotal moment in the history of Leeds United. If he was given time- Leeds would have continued wining titles.
How can you give him time when he didnt like the club and alienated the Leeds star players in one of the first training sessions he had with Leeds, first 6 matches with Clough, Leeds were sitting rock bottom of the first division.

Clough mistake was not having Taylor with him
Clough was not anything but Class and Quality , Forest are lucky he took them to the peaks of being the best team in Europe for two seasons running. He lost his way when his former best friend and co manager died in 80's this being Peter Taylor.
Cloughie and Taylor the greatest management team ever to grace football, they were such visionaries at the time......very few realize how good Cloughie was as a player, 251 goals in 274 appearances before injury robbed him of his playing career, tell me a striker with a record like that since.....then to go and do what he did as a manager with Taylor just showed how much of a special manager he was...would have been great to see him manage the modern player, he’d knock a few of them down a peg or two, imagine Pogba behaving as he does with Cloughie lol

7 weeks is nowhere near enough , hindsight is a wonderful thing perhaps Don revie was right in saying Johnny Giles should of took over continuity ! Sadly gone out-of the game over the years .

Apparently Clough didn't even know anything about this interview. Basically he was thrown under the proverbial bus that night.
That is very true, I seen an interview years later where Cloughie spoke about this interview, was a complete hit job to take the focus off the board and team and blame it all on Cloughie, Revie did all he could to undermine him even after he left trying to get Giles in the role, I’m Irish and a Forest fan and I never liked Giles after knowing some of the shit he did to Cloughie supported in background by big Don! Was so happy when he went to Forest and did what he did, back to back European cups was a middle finger to Leeds, Revie, and all those players......game needs visionaries like Cloughie to bring it forward.

Not only did Johnny Giles enjoy a legal victory v. the David Peace book but Dave Mackay also enjoyed one v. the film version. As a Hollywood lawyer called Fred Leopold used to say, "If you have real people as characters they can have lattes and muffins but they can't say, 'Let's go for a f**k in the bushes'."
Peter Taylor indeed had a brilliant eye for a player but without him and without any money in the pot, Clough kept Forest up for another eleven years. Those years included three top-three league finishes (before 1993 they were never out of the top ten), two League Cup wins, an FA Cup final, and getting cheated out of a UEFA Cup final appearance (1984). Even if he had done nothing else previously, Clough would still be remembered as a top manager.

A great display of two very different Football philosophies, Don was very old school and cloughie is younger manager looking to the future with his "different play style", if he was alive he could still manage a top club in today's game.
Manchester United should have begged for cloughie the day Leeds sacked him.. He would've made a great Man united manager then and our bad era in the 1970's might have never happened, and George Best being managed by Cloughie would have worked i think.
Best and Clough could've went to the pub together.
Cloughs achievements superseded Revies.

Could it have been unsettling for the players? Honestly that’s the manager’s job? Teams need to be motivated by a combination of encouragement, and competition to discourage complacency. It’s tough, but realistically that’s life at the top of any profession.
We’ve seen with United and Arsenal, you can’t take over experienced title winners.
Needs to be somebody close to those teams and have their respect

@@alanberkeley7282 I agree totally. I see that now, but I didn't see it then. It was just two different styles. Brian used to like to knock a man's ego down before he built it up again. Don wasn't going to be knocked down by anyone.
Don did manage to win the British Home Internationals in 1975, even managing to beat Scotland 5-1 in what became the annual international between the two nations.

@@yingyang1008 I think Clough was better suited to working with players on a daily basis, building a team spirit amongst a group who then played to their strengths.
He wouldn't have been able to do this with players he only saw occasionally.
In any case, he wouldn't have achieved anything with England - our players just weren't good enough in those days to compete on the international stage.
France, West Germany, Holland, Brazil, Argentina and Italy were far more talented than we were.
Why?
Robson was a better manager at international level I think and did wonders at Ipswich earning him the England job.
Revie's Leeds were not that successful.
Promotion followed by two league titles, two European trophies, one FA Cup and one League Cup.

And played (v southampton/man u) 1972, some of the finest football ever seen in this country.
I know it was a different era and a more physical ,and aggressive game,but Leeds were a dirty ,team.
Domestically they were the most consistent team during the second half of Revie's reign - even more so than Shankly's Liverpool or Nicholson's Spurs. And he did that despite spending less on players in 13 years than Clough did in 7 weeks.

Revie... went on to nothing. Clough became a legend.
