Clough often gets tarred as a rambling alcoholic due to his personal decline into alcoholism and poor results in his latter years. People nowadays often overlook how much of a genius the man was. He was an incredibly articulate, bright, sharp tool of the game. Took no shit, but moved mountains - much like Bill Shankly. Same aura, similar charisma. Look at where Derby County and Nottingham Forest were when he took charge and look where they ended up under him - and with, let's face it, pretty unfashionable playing squads when you compare them to the classic Man United and Liverpool squads.
At his worst, he still had the good sense to rely on his natural warmth, charm and humour and he didn't need to run rings around him. People just ended up agreeing with him.

One of the funniest men of our times! If Brian wasn't making you laugh with something he'd done or said, someone was probably making you laugh telling you a story about him. The really funny thing is that I think people were oftentimes laughing at themselves and their own shortcomings, knowing that if they'd been in the same situations as Mr Clough and having to take action or make decisions, they probably wouldn't have done or said the things that he did as they had neither the strength of character, confidence, the respect of others nor the balls to do so...🙂👍
