  • The day Cloughie got the sack at Leeds United he went on Yorkshire TV's Calender programme to be interviewed by future MP Austin Mitchell - and sat next to previous Leeds boss, current England manager and nemesis Don Revie....what followed was TV gold...

Just like today’s media the interviewer showed his bias to one side of the discussion, interrupting Brian Clough on a number of occasions whilst allowing Don Revie to finish his points. The later actions of Don Revie in how he gave up the England managers job says much about him. If you are honest at the time Leeds United were known as ‘a dirty team’ with players like Norman Hunter, Billy Bremer, Jonny Giles was a ‘silent assassin and Jack Charlton with his black book.

I think you should have said: 'never won as much as they could have.' Two league titles, FA Cup, League cup and two European Fairs Cups from 1968-74 is not really sod all. It averages a trophy a season, which back then was comparatively high. They never won the European Cup, which Clough did twice - though they only had one crack at it under Revie - the second was under Armfield - and let's face it, they were robbed fair and square in the final. Both were great managers and you can sense a grudging respect in the interview.

Peter Taylor indeed had a brilliant eye for a player but without him and without any money in the pot, Clough kept Forest up for another eleven years. Those years included three top-three league finishes (before 1993 they were never out of the top ten), two League Cup wins, an FA Cup final, and getting cheated out of a UEFA Cup final appearance (1984). Even if he had done nothing else previously, Clough would still be remembered as a top manager.
