  • Is Christianity just an absurd religion? Why does God need to die to pay for sins? Surely, there could have been a better way.

    A friend of mine, as an attack on my belief, said something to the tune of, "God sacrifices himself to himself to save mankind from himself." My reply was, "To paraphrase Jean-Luc Picard, 'What you say with irony, I say with conviction.'"
    I watched a video a few days ago by David Wood, where he addressed this issue from a different direction. He noted how in ancient days, the pagans believed that the way to curry favor with God was to sacrifice what was most precious to them, culminating with sacrificing their children to Moloch. Then along comes Abraham, and God tells him to sacrifice his only son to Him. Same story, or so it would seem. But at the last minute, God tells him to stop, and says that He Himself will provide a sacrificial Lamb. In other words, God doesn't want us sacrificing our sons to Him; He sacrificed His Son for us instead. He flipped the understanding of the ancient pagans on its head.

      @MrCusefan44 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@SoRunThatYeMayObtain - I don’t believe that it is obvious. The 3rd Century theologian Origen developed a way of understanding the Scriptures. He perceived that not all parts of the Bible should be understood the same way; he distinguished between various “senses” of Scripture as literal, moral, anagogical and allegorical. The allegorical sense looks beyond the most obvious reading to illuminate some greater spiritual truth - one story which could fall in that category is the story of Abraham’s sacrifice. While there are some Christians today who take an almost entirely literalist interpretation of the entire Bible, that is a fairly new development and is well outside how scripture was broadly understood for most of church history.
      As a Christian, in the specific case of the story of Abraham and Isaac - if I’m asked if I believe it literally happened my response would be “I don’t know, and I don’t care”. Someone could provide compelling evidence either way, and it still would not impact or influence an allegorical understanding of the story.

    • @SoRunThatYeMayObtain
      @SoRunThatYeMayObtain 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@MrCusefan44 Well, at least for me, Jesus mentioned things that happened in the OT and it seems to me he saw the flood as something that really happened. And with Paul, same goes for Abraham sacrificing Isaac. They saw it something that really happened. But I would be happy to be taught by others. I don't really know a lot.

    • @MrCusefan44
      @MrCusefan44 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@SoRunThatYeMayObtain - “Seems to me” is the key phrase in your comment. Go back, reread the passages you are referencing, and ask yourself what would eliminate an allegorical interpretation.
      As a non-Biblical example, I’ve listened to comparisons of Tony Stark’s sacrifice in Endgame to Christ’s sacrifice where - based solely on a written transcript of the commentary - you could not tell if the speaker honestly believed Iron Man existed. But a typical reader is going to bring outside context - it’s a movie, movies aren’t real, etc to conclude the speaker is aware Tony Stark/Iron Man are fictional characters. That’s appropriate in the case of Iron Man - but not appropriate in the context of Biblical exegesis. How are you concluding that Jesus believed Abraham literally believed the story with Issac?
      It almost certainly runs into the same issue atheists point out about Jesus believing a mustard seed is the smallest seed in the world - and literalists have to create increasingly unlikely interpretations to counter atheist arguments.
      The better argument is that we were given both scripture and tradition, and tradition never accepted a solely literalist interpretation. But accepting that would start many down the road of becoming Catholic, which is completely unacceptable - much better to hold fast to a newer Biblical view of literal exegesis which means atheist objections are valid.
      “Seems to me” is irrelevant - how did it seem to the church, and what traditions have been passed down. If “seems to me” contradicts that - you’re wrong, plain and simple.

Communion is not eating and drinking actual flesh and blood, its a symbolic practice of taking Jesus into us on a deep spiritual level through His shed blood atonement for us on the cross.

      @@twitherspoon8954 Sorry but I'm going to have to debunk that with obvious facts. If you had actually read the Bible you would have known Christianity comes directly out of the Old testament many, many centuries before Jesus or Paul were ever born.
      Isaiah 53:5
      But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
      Isaiah 53:10
      Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
      Psalm 22:27
      All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.
      Psalm 22:30
      They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.

The notion of “God’s love,” “experiencing God” or “communicating with God” seems so alien to me that I don’t even know where to begin to comprehend or experience it. How do I overcome this burden and difficulty? How do I actually get to experience Him and have a relationship with Him?

I saw someone ask once "what type of book is the Bibble?" and I though, for the ancient ones it would have been a comedy, like the Oddisey, but after seeing this video I get it more clear, the Bibble is certaintly a love story, a story of the love of a creator for his creation. Keep it up! Despite the Suffering of the world God is always there for us.

    When you are feeling lost, and you feel true despair. That empty loneliness you feel in the pit of your stomach that almost aches. That is your soul in the throws of hunger for the sustenance it needs and craves. That can only be filled with Gods love.

      no, that loneliness is caused by your insane superstition alienating everyone around you. you need socialization with people. not santa claus.

    Splendid message as always. It reminds me of a quote by Von Balthasar which resonates well with this video of yours.
    "No fighter is more divine than one who can achieve victory through defeat. In the instant when he receives the deadly wound, his opponent falls to the ground, himself struck a final blow. For he strikes love and is thus himself struck by love. And by letting itself be struck, love proves what had to be proven: that it is indeed love."-Hans Urs von Balthasar
    Keep up the good work, Michael!

      @@meowlionkatz And you need to read upon Christian Theology since you don't understand the Trinity with their distinctions between the persons (Father, Son, Holy Ghost). Mischaraterizing doesn't get you far.
