- Is Christianity a cult? Well... my answer might surprise you.
There are defining characteristics of cults that don't reflect the heart of Jesus. However, Christian churches can act cultish if they're not careful. But I don't think there's any way churches will if they're taking cues from the founder of the movement.

The whole "Worship me or burn eternally in hell" the walking on water and demons bs, and many other examples make Christianity a cult.
Like how god asked Abraham to sacrifice his own son to him as a test, it doesn't matter whether he did it or not because asking him to do that is enough to prove its a cult, with a genocidal asshole of a god and angels that look worse than demons

i agree E J. i am a single farther, my wife was buddhist when she died, and the schools "LIE" every friday in small school, kids are sent too assembly where they are forced to learn christianity! When asksed of the head teacher "Why," i was told (which is a lie!) "we have talkers on all religion," but in 4 yrs of school,,,not once!.Then the kids move on to big school and we forget the injustice of "jesus died for you" or "sarah was the mother of......." Christianity isn't a religion, its a crime!

Christianity today certainly is cultish. I've had the unpleasant experience of being kicked out of Moody Bible Institute and now two different churches for having critical discussions about the theology. The leadership in each case made it clear they felt I was dangerous because of the type of questions I put forward. It's been extremely hard on my family to keep going through this. I'm ready to call evangelical Christianity in most forms a cult.

@Jack Of All Trades I don't think it's a matter of cherry picking from the bible. It's a matter of discerning the difference between the bible and Christianity.
@Jack Of All Trades I'm hoping you're a fan of Jordan Peterson. He has a lot of insight into how to read the bible. I've been kicked out of Moody Bible Institute, and now four different churches. It's always been for the same reason: asking the question "where is that in the bible." I've been studying the old testament Hebrew for several years now and I'm appalled at how far off the Christian perspective is. Growing up with Christian influence it takes years of deprogramming to realize how much of our thinking is filled with unfounded assumptions that make it impossible to hear what the bible actually says. Christians give nearly every word a different definition than what was understood by the writers of the bible. "Sacrifice" is probably the most horrifically misrepresented concept. It then serves as the basis for misunderstanding the entire new testament.

I’m going through this right now. The church is exactly like this especially to people who are ill and disabled.
We should believe in sects and a religion, not cults unless they're sects. Actually we should believe in sub-sects. Christianity is a sunworshipping primitive invented cult, and it's wrong to invent cults or religions. Somebody invented them sometime, but it should be a sect to prevent inventing it. Also the religion we should believe in is a love-based idol worship (I saw this in a puppet show on TH-cam about love), I think they invented their own sect of this primitive religion, I've joined, have you? Just believe in a love-based religion, is it too much to ask? Love is everywhere, and love is perfect. Love comes from God, and God is a graven image. :)
Best advice I can give you is to explore other churches. Because if that's what your current church is like, then God definitely isn't in it
@@sethfrady Agreed, the church I go to always asks disabled or homeless people if they want to come in and eat something or just check out the service, if a church is like this to disabled people then its no good place to stay.

The bible is full of inaccuracies, contradictions and fallacies. With that being said, yes Christianity is a cult. I'm content to be a gratifying deist.

I don't see how the accuracy or inaccuracies of the Bible relates to this topic directly. Cults are a social-system which says nothing about the truthfulness of that cult's beliefs.
That being said, it sounds like you've had some bad experiences with Christian communities. I'm sorry if that's the case.
@@TruthSnack Accuracy of the bible matters a lot !. Authenticity puts the entire book into question. Imagine receiving a car with missing parts, It wouldn't work correctly or at all, that same logic goes for all religions including Christianity.

Of course the accuracy of the Bible matters A LOT to whether Christianity is true! I'm not disagreeing with that at all. And of course I think people should ONLY be Christians if it's true. My previous comment was trying to make the point that whether a community is cultish or not doesn't help us know if it's beliefs are true or false. So believing Christianity is a cult won't help anyone dismiss it at false.
I also watched the video you posted. It's obviously meant to be humorous. Sadly, I think it lacked thoughtful commentary on whether these passages actually contradict when properly understood. I would take me weeks to work through the whole video.
BUT (heads up), I think where WE will misunderstand each other in this conversation is that even if you found a contradiction in the Bible that convinced me, I would still be a Christian since my belief is based on the historical person of Jesus. If you really want to discuss my beliefs at their core, we should discuss the resurrection of Jesus.

A religious sect doesn't have to be extreme to be a cult. They can be nice and 'normal' people who base their every decision in life off of an imaginary sky master. That is very, very cultish.

Great points! And very fair I have struggled with leaving my church but I am conflicted because a great majority of the people in my church were some of the best people I have ever met. But some of the Christians I know almost use it as a fraternity.

Good topic. I profess Christ, but I stay away from corporate churches to avoid the abuse of scripture for carnal reasons. And I wouldn't see these people everyday or live life with them. Just meet every Sunday to give money, don't ask questions on any spiritual issues, first lady this, special event that, ect. The first thing people ask after you reveal your faith is "what church do you go to? Go to a church". No one sees it.

Regardless. Mathew ch.5 verse 48 says: Therefore you are to (Must be) perfect as your heavenly father is perfect. That means never sin at all and the bible says The wages of sin is death. Since Mathew ch.5 verse 48 says you are to be perfect as your heavenly father is perfect and since the wages of sin is death.. What's the point about repenting from your sins in the 1st place?
So how then, can one discern if the church one belongs to or attends, is really "actively serving the heart of Christ" - is it the Christ in Matthew 25, the Christ who got angry and overthrew the moneychangers, the Christ that felt abandoned on the cross, the Christ that did not come to bring peace "but a sword" OR... is it the Christ that supposedly is coming back to "rapture his people." ???

Questioning may be encouraged, but I bet every time someone asks questions about the faith to someone like a preacher, that preacher uses every possible thought he has to convince them into strengthening their faith rather than opening up to looking for new outlooks. I've been a firsthand witness to these things, a lot of churches only like their peers questioning the religion because then they can find new things to build arguments against.

I’m here because I’ve seen some cultish things in all churches. But this one assumption came from the actual Bible. I was given the Bible scripture acts 3:1-9. I missed church but this is what they were talking about. The story is Peter heals this man that can’t walk in the name of God of Nazareth. Once he’s healed he praises god. That’s when they stop the story. But if you continue past that. Peter attracts onlookers. Or people that see him heal the man. Then Peter goes to get them to join Christ and accept him as their savior. To confess their sins so they can be forgiven.
I think the Bible is a history book of the first cult known. What divides the knowledge of the cult or just reality. The Bible is seen as the guide to life. They make you feel loved. They make you find hope. And they worship this entity that can do all things through him. And most church’s have mottos. And the fucked up part about it is. When you grow up in this cult it’s all you know. And you pass it down for generations. Which feeds the motto. “Get other member to join as you”.

Every new movement/cult are often open to everyone because they want to grow and spread their message. Christianity wouldn’t have accepted anyone that claims Jesus wasn’t the only way to god. So this “acceptance” you speak of was very much conditional.

In the Gospels Jesus often spent time with those who sincerely doubted him! He didn’t send them away or even rebuke them. @@TruthSnack I'm curious if you've studied religion and the the development of christianity through its texts and its followers, because i promise you that though Jesus did spend a lot of time with non-believers, he wasn't the one who developed the religion, he was just the icon used after his death. Most likely because of the fact that he was so admirable to his followers. And this religion in its text manipulates and coerces its followers, even before the churches began to do so. The fear of hell to strengthen faith, or the fear of God's wrath, sins, etc. Christianity was built on a precipice of fearing an all powerful god, and Jesus was then linked to it as a "role model" of what its followers should do, developing into christianity from Judaism and using Jesus as a patron after his death.

I think you're trying to say that if I just assume Jesus was the son of God then I'm in trouble cause I could just assume any god or God is real. I think I agree. However, my entire channel is laying out in great detail why I believe and don't just assume.
Finally, Christianity could be FALSE, and not be a cult. A TRUE religion could be a cult. The point of this video is to say that something being cultish doesn't mean it's true or false. Cults are a social structure that can apply to true and false worldviews, families, clubs, and businesses.

Jesus was real. There's actual evidence of that. And just because Jesus is real doesn't necessarily mean other gods and demigods were real. Jesus wasn't a demigod he was another form of God to save humans from ourselves

As a devout Christian, I mostly have nothing against atheism, but I do have a problem with The Freedom From Religion Foundation, and New Atheism.
Then you are a problematic person. The fact that you are okay with people joining your belief and being educated about it but rebuking the education of an alternative or lack of belief is not only hypocritical, but also shows how much you are a part of a cult. Any devout christian is just a widely accepted cultist. Nothing about Christianity screams that it is otherwise, and not a single thing can be said about christianity to convince another whole heartedly that it is not a cult, because you'd only try to convince people its real, and that is cult like in itself, and to convince someone it isn't, means you aren't christian.

Christianity is most certainly a cult. Its a massive conglomerate of people believing in an supernatural being above them with powers and judgement, with groups of practitioners who gather under ceremonies, adapt their lives to their beliefs, refute any evidence that may decree otherwise, and beckon other individuals to join in their belief system because "Their religion is the true religion." They do contain even at the most mundane level ritualistic practices, convert anything they see unfit into a product of their religion to open up the acceptance of things they wish to be true, and I could keep going. The problem with asking someone if christianity is a cult or not solely depends on whether or not you are asking someone who is christian. If you ask someone in a group deemed to be a cult if they were in a cult, what do you think their response would be? Christianity is a cult, and those who believe it will deny it because it infringes on their faith and their peace of mind, and unfortunately it is the most successful cult to have existed, why else would all other religions that preceded it get stomped out over time?
Also the shame cycle you bring up is very prevalent in Christianity, to the point you are usually ridiculed and even in extreme cases abandoned by those who may be close to you. They also do not like their beliefs being questioned at all, or any thought provoking and challenging thoughts because they will then see and treat you as a threat. They will also use hollow threats against you if you don't believe what they believe, such as the notorious "Aren't you afraid of going to Hell?" which is a sentence that is blatantly brain washed propaganda, because how can they not grasp the concept of someone not being afraid of hell because they don't believe in it? Its like when you get told that and you respond that you don't believe in it, they immediately forget what you just said and continue to try and push on you as if for some reason they can't grasp the concept that just because they think its real doesn't mean its real or that other people believe it and that if they just keep shoving it in your face it might make you scared enough to join them. Christians are fucking stupid.

Is it wrong for humans to be sacrificial for one another? Obviously not. It's a good, moral thing to do.
To believe that Jesus freely gave his own life the save others is not even close to religions in which people offer others as murdered sacrifices (against their will) to try and continuously appease a god who delights in violence.
This comment seems like intentional word play to make Christianity look bad: Jesus is a human whose sacrificial attitude led to him willingly giving his life to save many. "Christianity is a cult of HUMAN SACRIFICE!"

I love how you set up all these requirements for what constitutes a cult, didn't answer any of them and acted like you disproved anything.
1st there's no proof that Jesus even existed in the first place and what Christianity is SUPPOSED to be based on and how it actually is are not mutually exclusive. Not to mention Christianity is extremely exclusive, perhaps not in the way of not allowing many people to enter but neither is Mormonism, which is for sure a cult. But Christianity IS exclusive in the sense of saying that all other religions are completely false and that there are no other gods than the christian god... Which all religions say, most of which are cults.
2nd just because "Jesus" didn't say people weren't allowed to ask questions doesn't mean the church doesn't. For example, the question of is the bible actually true? Throughout 20 years of my life I grew up in the church across several different churches due to moving a lot and in all of them I was either told not to doubt god's existence or people would often times sidestep any questions that would come up.
3rd there are a lot of shame cycle's in Christianity, primarily based around masturbating, premarital sex, porn but also just sin in general. From simply people avoiding you or treating you as though you're less of a person to the extreme of most parents putting activity monitoring apps on their children's phones to make sure they aren't watching porn which is an extremely disturbing breach of privacy. And if you're going to deny that that sort of thing happens I can assure you it happens and it did happen ... to me
And finally transparency in leadership. The majority of people who are not christian list the reason for not joining as an unwelcoming environment and everyone, especially the religious leaders, being fake or overly unlike regular people. Not to mention there has been lots of instances shown of pastors using tithing money to buy a 20 million dollar plane because "god told them to" and a whole bunch of instances of abuses of power.

They prey on the weak willed, those who feel lost, because they are easy to manipulate, and though the bottom feeder christians may think they are helping, they are just blindly guiding someone into a belief system that they themselves have, in that person's time of weakness rather than actually helping. They prey on the stupid because only the intellectual would think to learn why things happen, rather than assuming its God's will. Its also weak and stupid because there is so much hypocrisy and contradictions within the beliefs themselves, with no concrete system which clearly makes it the most fragile, but most flexible cult as anyone can use the framework and tweak it to convince someone to join, but also breaks continuity for those who are smart, making it stupid as well.

This is not definitive at all. A cult controls people using a belief/punishment system. The beliefs vary, so saying that a cult leads the soul outwardly only pertains to a certain group of cults, and not them in general. And quoting the bible is the poorest argument you could use against the consensus that christianity is a cult, because to try and rely on your beliefs to argue a point denoting those very beliefs rather than looking for outward and solid proof is cult like.

It used to be a lot more cult like in biblical times (such as sacrafices etc.) And my youth group actually brought it up and talked about it, but Christianity isnt like that anymore and it is not a cult

No, there really isn't. Clearly you do not understand what defines a cult. In fact, now there is more cult-oriented practices within christianity than there was in ancient times. Sacrifices are not something that constitutes a cult. Many religions of past ages used sacrifices to appease their gods. Cults are fundamentally based off fear tactics, manipulation, lack of transparency, and an unwelcoming environment to those who do not submit to their beliefs.

@@DaInvisibleNinja There's documentation for the Bible just like any historical documents. Jesus came fully man and fully God and told everyone he was the way, the truth, and the life. Therefore what he says and does is all true-- making other religions not true. And yes you can choose to follow God or not, if you want to be with him and have a relationship with him and trust in him you will go to Heaven. If you don't want to then you will be separated from God. He won't force you somewhere against your own will, he loves you too much.
