What to Do When You Can't See The End of The Tunnel?

  • In this video, author and mental health educator Douglas Bloch uses the metaphor of not seeing the light at the end of the tunnel to describe the feeling of being stuck in the middle of a bad depression. He then offers strategies that sufferers can use to hold on until they get to the end of the tunnel and the light once again appears.

I lost my job earlier this year, at my age, very difficult to get back into the world of work. No friends, no family left. 2 years ago, bipolar mother committed what was akin to a suicide. Going through a difficult time. Alone, need to speak to myself during the day to prove I still exist. Pathetic. See few reasons in continuing. Watching videos on Jesus to give me hope and I'm not even religious!

I can't see the end of the tunnel. Life is an ongoing hell due to being bullied by people I can't get away from. Heartbroken and depressed. But not actively suicidal. Just ideation. Trapped. Broken. Now I'll listen to your video and I will see if it can give me hope xxxx 🧡🌱

      Hope . Peace . Love . Respect .
      All good wishes for you.
People become sick because of other people's cruel, hateful behavior
No quick-fix for persons that has been and are bullied.
      I have been there myself.
It hurts when you are in that situation. It took me years to recover.
I know it is crap people that deep inside are insecure about themselves, that's why they like to put others down.
But it is good people out there that actually want you the best. Someone that dont want anything in return. Just a friendly person that want to help others. They may be a pastor, family member or a professional in the health system. (I know that it's not you, but the scumba.. that should have been there!)
My way to a better life was to talk with a psychologist.
Believe me, it helps to talk with someone that deserve your trust.
And things can change faster than you understand in the darkest moment.
All the best for the future. With the right persons around you, the world are beautiful.

Thank you kindly for all your good work on the topic of depression. I live in Poland where a large part of mental health related topics is still a taboo and changing how I see this stuff was a huge help in itself. I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford therapy and have access to so many great resourcess, but this is still a big issue here. True self acceptance was the thing that helped me immensly on my journey (and still does). And light therapy, among other things.

I've struggled with depression all my life but been able to function. For the last few months, however, after leaving an emotionally unhealthy relationship I've been really struggling with a deep depression that has left me barely functional and made it incredibly difficult to see a future for myself. I started therapy 2 months ago and just had a doctor's appointment this morning to talk about medication and will be starting Wellbutrin this weekend. I came to work after my appointment feeling incredibly defeated because I had made a huge mistake at work and procrastinated on a project to the point where I had to admit to my boss that I had just completely fucked up. Your video on forgiving yourself for mistakes from 2016 was really helpful, and this one is great as well. Really glad I discovered your channel, thank you for what you do.

Great story about the bike ride. Sometime the light is just a tiny pin hole size, so so far away and getting further. Following your practical advice in your book Healing From Depression, can make the light spot a little larger, brighter and nearer. Eventually it can get closer, one can emerge out the dark dark tunnel of no end. Peace, acceptance, belief in the spiritual nature of mere existence reminds one that feeling at one with one's existence on this earth plane is possible, is allowed, is the key to healing a troubled, pained, depressed, hopeless mind ⛅🌤️☀️

It's hard to compare people sufferings. Victor Frankl said that suffering is like a ga. It fills whatever room it is in. I have been suicidal four times, been hospitalized five times, and I had my roommate and therapist commit suicide. As a result, I feel great compassion for what you are going through. Also, I just released a video called "notice moments of grace." It talks about how even in hell they are moments when the light comes through and you get a very short respite from the suffering. You might want to watch it. It is helped me

Hi, Douglas. Your videos are really helpful. I have a question.
I went through a major depression in the last couple years where I was forcefully hospitalized. I was diagnosed with MDD and PTSD and I'm really just coming out of it and managing it responsibly now.
The thing is I'm in that scary part of recovery where is everything is great but I'm freaking out about what I should do now and everytime I feel I have a symptom it's like I almost actively combat it with being busy or getting lost in tv. I'm almost afraid of having feelings because it took so long to crawl out of that pit.
I guess that really wasn't a question but it was good to vent. I'm alone and I get overwhelmed working on myself.

I'm glad you were feeling better. I think having a counselor or therapist to see you on a regular basis will be of great help for you to maintain your recovery. Also, are there any outpatient programs in your area?

In your professional opinion, for adults who spent their infancy and/or early childhood being sensitized to trauma/stress, is there much hope apart from medication to treat constant and severe hyper-arousal?

    • @DouglasBloch
      @DouglasBloch  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It sounds like you were experiencing something called complex PTSD. I cannot diagnose over the unit but I suggest you see a good psychologist or therapist and get some support. There are also good books about it. I think Peter Levine wrote a book book called waking the tiger

Doug, can you do a vid on how people can resist the mass media...and how one can NOT be scared of certain countries(North Korea,China, etc.) Because, the truth is:I'm more scared of North Korea than I am of the grim reaper..and I am SCARED of Koreans too! :( And I can't figure out where this all even began.
    I'm stuck.

Do you have long distance service? If so, you should be able to call 1-816-969-2000. You can reach that number from anywhere in the world. Also, you can go to their website and put in a prayer there. Or if you have a smart phone you can download their app. It is called uPray.

I literally have lost hope and the will to live! It all started with kidney stones. I had a ureteroscopy to remove a kidney stone and was left with none bacterial prostatitis chronic pelvic pain syndrome. Then 4 weeks later I got two kidney stones coming down at the same time in left and right kidneys. The urologist said he had never seen this before and I must be the most unluckest man in the world. The left one I past in agony but the right one was 1 cm and blocked my ureter. I had to have lithotripsy twice but it didn't work so they had to go up with a laser. After all this I have another ct scan that reveals I still have 7 kidney stones 3 in left kidney and 4 in right kidney. Then after all this my girlfriend of eight years decides she's leaving me and taking my five year old daughter with her. So now I'm left on my own with prostatitis suffering severe depression wanting to kill myself every day! Even bought a rope I'm that bad. I see no future. Everything looks grey like u can't see colour. Lost all interest in everything I loved to do! Wake up sobbing not wanting to get out of bed. I see no point in life don't even care what I look like anymore.

I’m really sorry you are having to go through this. Is there anyway you can get to see your daughter? It seems like he would have the right to. The most important thing I can advise you to do is to find a good man and a therapist to consult with. In Oregon we do have people at low cost clinics that see people on a sliding scale

Also I don’t know what your attitude towards prayers, but there is a wonderful 24 hour free prayer line that is very powerful. The name is Silent Unity and the number is 800-669-7729 or 1-816-969-2000. You might want to give them a call
