    The FUV is rated to have a top speed of 75 mph, so I think that full doors and windows are a must as well as heat and air conditioning.
    There’s the Nimbus trike that comes in 2 models, base and S.
    The S trim has bigger batteries and can go as fast as 75 mph. More importantly, they offer air conditioning as an option.
    But the Nimbus is still in development as well as the Solo….
    But, in spite of it’s shortcomings, I think the Arcimoto is in some ways the best choice, mainly because it’s in production at the moment.

      Absolutely not. The video author is full of it. Light EVs become heavy unsustainable vehicles when spoiled car addicted Americans demand climate control. Simply not needed!
      Tells me what motorcycles offer climate control. There are a billion motorcycle and scooter owners on Earth who all unanimously envy the higher level of comfort and safety offered in the base model Arcimoto.
      Cars are boring and totally unadventurous and they cause car centric city designs.
      The weight of doors and windows will slow down the vehicle and shorten its range, as would AC. Windows convert the vehicle into a solar oven. Don't forget that clear roof.

    Although I would like to see the price coming down, I don’t think the fuv is expensive for its category. If you look at another three wheel vehicle, the can am spyder, it uses gas. It needs oil and transmission fluid ( CVT transmission ) change for maintenance. It starts at $18499 without any extra. At $17900, the fuv is a steal 🤷‍♂️ By the way, can am spyders do sell pretty well. Thank you for your video 👌

      The Can Ams have a lot more range before you have to top up and you can top up a lot faster. If you only want to travel in a small town at low speeds, sure, the Arcimoto is the vehicle of choice.

      With extras mine was $25K delivered and it is the only new vehicle I have ever bought. Why? I can't afford a car on my pension but the FUV literally pays for itself in just 8 years when you compare it to the costs of owning and operating a car.
      My insurance is just $134/yr which is one sixth the cost of annual car insurance in Florida. No gas to buy. All of this in a market where the average cost of a new EV in the US is currently $60K!
      You don't get to wish or demand the price that suits you. 900 owners know it is worth the price.

  • @bacabourke
    @bacabourke ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Great review, the best and most honest I've seen. The biggest problems are 1. the battery pack is too small and 2. The design is so unaerodynamic that traveling at the advertised top speed cuts your range to almost nothing. It needs doors and windows (ones which you can be minimised for when you are doing a short trip and want the wind in your hair) and put in place when you need to travel a reasonable distance. Also, the ability to fast charge would be a great advantage.

    • @EVResource
      @EVResource  ปีที่แล้ว

      💯

    • @popeyegordon
      @popeyegordon ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The battery pack is right sized for sustainable vehicles. You mentioned reasonable distances which you do not know the definition of. Long ranges are no longer acceptable, we knew we had to stop long trips and commutes a decade ago. That's what busses and trains are for.
      It does NOT need the added weight of doors and windows, that always turns a vehicle into a solar oven which means AC will always be used, reducing the range further. The heated seats, hand grips and defroster are enough for all but the most extreme winter weather thanks to the windshield and roof. No motorcycle ever sold is as protective. You are just plain LYING about aerodynamics. Anyone looking at the front profile sees a narrow cross section barely larger than a motorcycle with windshield and we see it tapers towards the rear. Owners with doors report no detectable difference in range and the weight of doors will eliminate as much range as a bit of streamlining would offer. The demands for instant gratifcation and climate control are part of what made the US the leading co2 emitter. Few of us are heads of state or royalty so we do not deserve or require luxurious comfort.

      @popeyegordon I'm sorry, but trains are not and have not been an option for long distance travel for large parts of the U.S. East of the Appalachians or west of California and train travel is a Novelty.
      Just to visit my friends in the same city round trip is at the max edge of the arcimoto's current range. Also.This a "low cost" aimed at lower income. Low income apts don't have access to charge over night, so a longer range allows for more short commutes between charges

    Top 3 problems; (1, 2, & 3) Michigan (where I live). 1.) Handlebars make this a motorcycle by Michigan definition, this means a motorcycle endorsement. (Steering wheel would make it an autocycle drivable with a standard driver's license.) 2.) Lack of full doors - This is Michigan where we get real winter (not west coast winter) and where I would mostly use this, on dirt roads (Mud roads mostly.) This means slush and mud spray from not just the road but other vehicles. 3.) The biggest drawback; Not yet available in Michigan.

    1. It was fun to drive
    2. Box on the back to store things
    3. Attention it gets
    4. Having a windscreen
    5. Seats were better than expected for comfort
    Dislikes:
    1. No full doors with roll up windows. I say this as in FL rain storms come through. I got pretty wet driving it. Driving it with nobody around was fine but all it took was one truck going through a puddle and the water came rushing in. The rental place did warn me about that. So it must be common. Plus the wind noise on the highway is pretty high.
    2. Roof. It would be nice if they were black or something because with the sun, you get baked. Plus, the seats get really hot when parked in the sun.
    3. Steering. Fine while driving but try to parallel park that thing, it's a challenge. Heavy steering. They need power steering.
    4. Something was going on with the front drive as it was clunking and much louder than I expected.
    5. Fit and finish. For what it costs, could be much better.

      I have owned my FUV for 14 months as my only vehicle and I never got spashed once. Wind noise can never be as loud as it is on a motorcycle with no windshield - I don't miss that deafening wind rumble all my motorcycles involved. This is a utility vehicle, not a luxury limo. Owners in the sun belt use window tint or wraps to reduce or eliminate hot sun through the roof. I did mine for 20 bucks, I was the first to try it and I posted the photos in the owner group. Since then some rentals have had tint installed, like the Las Vegas venue. There is no problem with the drive, you just have to get used to the regen feature. FIT AND FINISH ON AN $18,000 UTILITY VEHICLE, IN A MARKET WHERE THE AVERAGE COST OF A NEW EV IS STILL OVER $60,000??? WTF, man?

Not only would the wide stable stance have to be narrowed, the tires would have to be rounded with far less contact with the road, still leaving us vulnerable to gravel or oil patches and much less traction in rain, the hazards of motorcycles. The flat tread car tires offer superior traction in all conditions.

    For me, the major drawback to this vehicle is safety.
    This would not protect the driver or passenger in the event of a tbone collision.
    Of the electric vehicles i have seen this is one of my favourites, but at the same time, i always end up thinking "what happens if this gets hit by a hummer".
    I certainly dont expect to get into an accident, ive only been in fender benders in my life, but i also think its reasonable to considser these " what if" scenarios.
    Also, it seems this vehicle would likely be "road only" based on the width of the front wheels. I dont necessarily want to use an EV as an ATV, but it would be nice if it could handle trails. Although i could always get a pedal assist bike as well for that, so its not a dealbreaker.
    The big drawback one for me is the hypothetical collision. Other than that, i dont see any downsides to it, honestly. I would already be willing to sacrifice maximum speed and range (its an EV, that is going to happen).

      Tilting would be an entirely diferent vehicle. The wheels have to be close together. And in the end you get a very small traction area with the rounded tires vs. the 14.5 inch total width of three car tires contacting the road which is vastly superior in all conditions. I know, I had 5 motorcycles before buying my FUV to be much safer on the road. The total package is what it needs to be for an autocycle.

Problem was we could not get a delivery date, just a demand for another $2500 without any meaningful commitment from the fiddler. So we figured this was very clear writing on the wall, theY needed money to survive. We took some options, PUTs for January 16, 2023 and predicted FUV would be in Chapter 11 by Christmas 2022. But along came more smoke and mirrors of 1 for 20 reverse split and we thought maybe they could earn their Christmas Bonus and last another 6 months? I rented an Arcimoto FUV for a few hours. Here are some things you forgot to mention:
    Cons:
    1. Steering. Very very heavy at low speeds. I have owned a motorcycle in the past and would prefer a steering wheel w/ rack and pinion setup for more leverage and better control for emergency maneuvers.
    2. Sunburn. I wore a cap, but no sunscreen. Mistake.
    3. Braking. There are 2 braking methods: regen (right-hand) and hydraulic (rear-foot to rear wheel). Regen braking is strong and progressive. Foot brake is very very weak. I would prefer an integrated single braking system.
    4. Transmission. Makes clunks when getting off of regen braking and accelerating. Disconcerting.
    5. Nitpicks. Seat height is not adjustable. Front legroom is slightly cramped for my 5'8" frame. Rear passenger has no hand holds -- must hold part of frame. Mirrors should be 20-50% larger and positioned higher. Ride is firm but not harsh. I would prefer a softer ride with more suspension travel.

    • @EVResource
      @EVResource  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with many points you make. The steering would benefit from a powered assist at low speeds. Braking would also be nice if it were one seem less process.
      I also noticed the “clunk”, but it didn’t bother me.
      Those being said, I’m surprised you mentioned sunburn. Considering that this is a motorcycle/autocycle, it’s to be expected that you’ll have exposure to the sun! Sounds like you figured out the solution though.
      Thanks for taking the time to view the video and comment!

    • @popeyegordon
      @popeyegordon ปีที่แล้ว

      1) there is a mechanical steering fix that will be in all new Arcimotos. 2) this is not a valid point to be making about an open autocycle. Who could not know they will get some sun and take measures in advance? 3) dual braking offers more versatilty. There is no regen braking at all with a fully charged battery that is cold. Ownerw like the dual braking and we know we have to stomp hard on the pedal if we need to stop fast. Power steering and brakes are a recent convenience that only came about during my lifetime. 4) I have had my FUV for 14 months now. There was only a regen clunk during the first couple weeks, I think one of the software upgrades eliminated that which was not a serious issue. 5) Seat hight and slant IS adjustable by the owner if you have a wrench to remove the bolts and make the adjustments and add spacers. Leg room is adequate for drivers up to 6'7". The frame is just fine for hand holds but you can add more holds from the extensive selection sold for Jeeps. Mirrors are fish eye and are just the right size - the blind spot is tiny and even non-existent if you don't have the trunk option. More suspension travel would mean more cost, more weight, higher COG and less range. It is just fine for a UTILITY VEHICLE.

      Well, if we had actual data of the coefficient of drag, it would be much easier to have some solid information. However, I can’t find anything officially published regarding the FUV.
      That being said, I can say with confidence based on my experiences and testing with aerodynamics (in general, not on the FUV) that it is not aerodynamically optimized and could benefit from many improvements.
      The doors would probably make a little difference, but I expect that actual owners probably don’t notice because there are many other variables that affect range and we don’t really know if anyone has tried to scientifically test this or not.
      I’m happy to put together an official test if I can get my hands on an FUV again and compare efficiency with and without the doors. Or maybe we could do that with yours. 👍👍

    • @popeyegordon
      @popeyegordon 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@EVResource First of all, most driving of the FUV is not at highway speed when drag actually matters. Secondly, this is not a long range vehicle so the sum total of any drag is not as impactful as it is with a car or bus going long distances. This is primarily a short hop city vehicle and that is specifically what it was designed for.
      Rentals at tourist destinations are a prime example of the practical use pattern.
      In 2 years and 2 months I have never gone more than 15 miles from home and I have never run my battery below 40% so I don't give a shit about some tiny barely measurable drag coefficient, nor do most owners.
      The behavior your focus on drag looks at is obsolete - long distance high speed travel in personal vehicles has been obsolete for a decade now. We are to use public transportation for long distances, take a train, or just don't go.
      The entire concept of the Aptera is to violate the new rule (which most Americans deny or ignore) about long distance travel in personal vehicles. It is not a solution for a valid problem, it is a way to bypass the issue which is of little help and over all it is no more valuable than the extremely wasteful overpowered Tesla status symbol vehicles.

      I wouldn’t say the FUV is a failed design, but they aren’t targeting a small market. If they want to be successful in building hundreds of thousands of these, they need to take into account the reasons people aren’t buying and see if they want to make changes.

      @@EVResource I have had just as many conversations with consumers. I am not retracting my stance about the summary vs. the content. YOU are personally saying the market is small. I say it is gigantic and growing every day. And I do mean every day. Are you an EV engineer? What degrees entitle you to pontificate so much? I don't see it. I see someone running ads in videos.

      The market opportunities are massive… but they have to keep in mind the needs and wants of that market. They aren’t trying to build a niche product, but at the current time it is viewed as such.
      Thanks for your comment, I appreciate the engagement even though we don’t see eye to eye about this one.

      @@EVResource Maybe what I didn't communicate well is that consumers are changing as more effects of climate change affect their daily lives. Smaller EVs are the right way to go and demand will continue to change towards understanding that. You can try to decide you know what they want but that is changing. Starting out small in a market that is going to rise to dominate is smart. It worked for me.

      That all sounds good to me! I'd love to see this country seek out smaller vehicles to take care of our daily needs. Personally, I love smaller efficient cars.

    Batteries need to be mounted under rear seat,and lower the front seat,better passenger view

    • @EVResource
      @EVResource  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm. That’s an interesting thought! I’ve never considered a change of seating position. When I was a rear seat passenger, my attention was so focused on everything I could see that I didn’t even realize the things I couldn’t see.

      The pasenger view is already deemed to be panoramic. Clear roof. Changing the battery config would be a totally new model but that is not justified. Low COG not over the single rear wheel is smarter.

    Frohnmayer destroyed the company and robbed all of us stockholders.

      I don't think the company is destroyed at all. And, I think it's important that credit for the creation of the vision and how far they've come so far should be given to Mark Frohnmayer. It's natural for a founder to take it as far as they can before handing off to someone new to run things. This is just the end of one phase, and the beginning of the next. (Hopefully)
