      @@houssamalucad753 Yes, adding a mechanism adds complexity and weight, but active grille shutters/louvers may improve aerodynamics more than enough to offset the downsides. For example, search for the TH-cam video titled "Know Your Toyota - Active Grille Shutters".

      The surface area of the bottom half of the car doesn't offer enough sq cm to dissipate the heat. Plus they are trying to do this through a composite material which has a much lower thermal conduction coefficient than does a metal aluminum cooling fin. Aptera has its priorities in the wrong places. Aerodynamics should not be number 1, safety should. Plus who wants to be enclosed by the cooling system? Imagine if it sprung a leak of hot coolant. The air conditioning system would be trying to cool the heat that it's own condenser is making? They need a good thermodynamic engineer.

    • @akeyto86

      @SilverShadow2LWB I'm sorry spung a leak of hot coolant that the condenser is making I think you may have meant something different because a condensers whole purpose is to release heat.

    • @SilverShadow2LWB
      @SilverShadow2LWB 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@akeyto86 You are absolutely correct. In order to cool the hot coolant liquid, it needs to be connected to the input of the condenser. The output of the condenser should be cooler for it has dissipated the heat to the atmosphere. A leak at condenser input since could be bad news for anybody in the vehicle. Most vehicles that have an AC system have the condenser isolated to an area remote to the passenger cabin such as in front of the radiator. Vehicle heating and cooling is a science all to itself. What I am getting at, is that you don't want to heat the cabin of the vehicle with the condenser which is part of the same system trying to cool it the interior temperature down. Thanks.

    You are 110% spot on with your disappointment and frustration with Aptera in regards to the NBC coverage. Chris Anthony would know better than anyone at Aptera what Gamma was capable of and that the cooling system was not complete. All I hear when I mention the Aptera to friends is "Oh the car that can't make it up the hill that was on NBC. You like that thing?" I can explain the issue until I am blue in the face but the image of Chris A. and the reporter pulling over due to over heating then Chris saying it was the first time someone drove up a hill, just can't be removed from their head.
    Mistakes happen and lord knows that I have made my own. What I don't understand is why Aptera did not turn this around in 24/48 hours and upgrade Gamma. A gamma vehicle is NOT to just be a pretty looking vehicle but 80% complete. To not have a 42kWh battery and to not have the cooling system 100% hooked up is really a bad look for Aptera. Gamma is only slightly better than the alpha vehicles in some ways.
    When Aptera came out and said that the LE would not have DCFC nearly everyone was upset and is very short order Chris and Steve turned that around and made a very bad situation into a very good situation by reversing the decision and to include DCFC. Not only include it but point out that it will charge at nearly 500 miles per hour!
    It now has been a couple of weeks since NBC aired the segment and still no upgrade to Gamma. Some have said why bother when the delta vehicles will be made soon. Given Aptera's history of delivery, it will likely be the end of December 2023 before we see a delta vehicle and that is a huge amount of time to be known as the vehicle that can't make it up what looks like a small hill. Aptera will likely never get a chance to be on NBC again but they really need to complete Gamma and make some videos of it going slow and fast up the same hill and even much steeper hills with the 42kWh battery. (Slow because there is less air cooling and fast because there is more load on the whole system in general.) To add to it, they need to do it on a very hot day.
    As an investor in Aptera, I just can't believe they let this interview spin so far out of control. The rest of the interview was actually pretty good but does anyone actually remember what the rest of the interview was about? Most likely, No. The only thing you remember is them pulling over because it overheated. I have asked Aptera to make a bad situation into a good marketing tool but they just seem to ignore that. I truly hope they complete Gamma as a real gamma vehicle and not just a shell of a vehicle for marketing. It is very obvious that their incomplete vehicle just killed the positive marketing that was occurring. Would any of us invested in Aptera if we had not done so prior to the NBC article? Aptera, Please make this into a positive opportunity, ASAP.

    Remember they need to change the front suspension arms to the production version on Gama to do the final hook up as the lines are hidden inside them for aerodynamics. Its not simply adding hoses since the routing is no longer external. I would have delayed the NBC reveal until they had a chance to finish setting up Gama with thermal management and not presented it in the Dog Days or Summer without it. That they were able to drive it as far as they did this time of year without the thermal system hooked up is quite promising.
    Best!

      I have the same view. All their builds to date are test beds. None are completely production. Software may also have needed a tweak to “add” motor cooling to the system and may still be under development in another test bed with design changes ahead of the prototype they drove for NBC. I agree the look is bad, but the decision was made to go ahead with a drivable prototype as-is. I also agree that Steve and Chris should step up now, preferably on NBC as well as their own web site and explain what happened to quell speculation.

    Sam, I appreciate your concern. But I believe that this was a simple oversight. I saw and sat in the Gamma model at the Fully Charged show, and they had changed many things on the Gamma model including the new, finished (slightly larger) body, with different seat placement, console, display, steering yoke, side view camera displays, plus it was the first prototype using the working solar panels, and the final design for the full 45kWh battery pack, and belly cooling system. Most show models have bare minimal operation, but this Gamma model was a testbed for many of Aptera's innovative implementations of new technologies. And Gamma showed well at FC. But unfortunately American funding for EV startups had soured, and Aptera moved towards their next step in development. Which started in Italy, with the CPC Group, who makes low volume carbon fiber chassis and bodies for exotic cars. Right after the FC show, Gamma was shipped to CPC for evaluation and review for their engineering team, and producing pressed CF and SMC body panels. Because CPC will be building the production Aptera's body (starting in a few months from now). Plus Aptera used the Gamma to raise European investment, and it was driven there in cold weather and worked just fine. The Gamma model was then shipped back to California to start a state-wide tour of local EV related events and shows, to keep Aptera in the news. But I think that much of Aptera's real focus lately has been in preparation for volume production in 2024, using Aptera Accelerator investments, combined with CA grant payback (and recent tax exclusions). In addition, Aptera did have to cut their staff considerably to reduce their operating costs and overhead, so that they had fewer resources to quickly retrofit full functionality to Gamma, which had worked just fine over the last 6 months. But that was a mistake. Aptera's focus had moved onto the real testing to show the production Aptera EVs real world capabilities. Which will be done on the upcoming Delta models, with the new CF chassis, and SMC body, the re-engineered, custom Elaphe motors, and tuned inverter, the production-intent battery pack, full HVAC, software, control systems, and the final cooling system. This upcoming Aptera model is the one that counts. It will be the first Aptera subject to real world crash testing, efficiency, range, and performance testing. And Aptera has VERY high goals to hit on many fronts. This prototype cooling issue was a mistake, to be sure. But I consider it to be about the same as the wobbly wheel pants on the Jay Leno Alpha review video, or Aptera not including DC fast charging initially. At the moment, it was a key mistake to publicly show, but since then they fixed the problem moving forward, and it was soon forgotten. As this mistake will be, once Delta models have been fully, 3rd-party tested, and a fixed Aptera production date is announced. Stay strong Sam! I have always had great faith in you, and your work. Doing hard-hitting, deep dives, in-depth research into corruption and lies has got to take a toll. As well as dealing with trolls. And you are certainly not going to be getting giant corporate support with unbiased reporting. But 34K subscribers, and hundreds of Patreon supporters like me who believe in you, should reassure you that you are on the right track, and that it is vital to have those counterpoint voices out there, who question, and research, and tell the whole story. Like you do.

  • @n.brucenelson5920
    @n.brucenelson5920 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    Sam, the amazing thing is the performance of this prototype with none of the cooling hooked up! The gamma vehicle was not finished before it was shipped off to Europe, and it has given several months of demo rides and undergone other testing before it came back. This was a publicity mis-step, but there are no cooling issues in the basic design, which will be proven when delta is put through its validation tests. The wheels have circulating antifreeze for cooling, and the lines had never been hooked up. This has been corrected for later demos.

    Hang in there Sam, there are lots of us behind you who also fight this battle, and we only wish the best for you!
    As far as Gamma cooling is concerned, if it were only a matter of plumbing the wheel motors to the rest of the system, it would have been done I believe. I think Gamma is running with little to no cooling system for the wheel motors to connect to, and here are my reasons. Because cooling has been of little issue so far, (cooler weather season and light work loads) and because the skin cooling is difficult to prototype, I believe Aptera is waiting for the first die-cast belly pans from CPC. If this holds true, Gamma has no skin cooling. Air conditioning is also an integral part of the cooling system, and we have no evidence that Gamma has A/C installed either. If this holds true, Gamma has no stage two cooling, and therefore little to no cooling whatsoever, unless some prototype method has been implemented.... but we have no evidence for this as well. I agree that the NBC piece should never have been done without adequate cooling (temporary or otherwise) not only installed, but tested prior, so that a good impression could be made for an important first time in front of this large audience! Let's hope that this critical experience has left an indelible impression with the smart folks at Aptera as they move forward in their marketing!

You can bet that some people who were seriously interested in a purchase reconsidered after watching the NBC piece. Most of those people will probably not see this video. Even seeing this video I can say, I would hold back a purchase if I had been considering one.
    I owned a Nissan Leaf for 5 years. It was terrific - dependable. I got it because it had a well established history. I think Aptera is cool, but I would be cautious to buy one. What concerns me is this event demonstrated that the CEO was too impatient to get the car "out there" before every t was crossed and every i dotted. It leads me to believe they would release a (production) car to the public that still has bugs.

    I'm not too stressed by the NBC fiasco. For starters, Aptera gets way more views on the internet than on mainstream TV which nobody watches any more anyway. Secondly, there is no such thing as bad publicity. This whole thermal throttling thing is a good conversation starter. If everybody understands that the Gamma prototype is a work in progress, and that there is a reason why this incident happened, and that the problem will be fixed before production starts, it's all good. Don't forget, in spite of the Cybertruck window smashing fiasco, Cybertruck went on to get over a million orders, and now it's about to go into full production, presumably with a window which wont smash so easily. Tesla's engineers will have figured out why it happened and installed a fix to make sure it doesn't happen again. Same with Aptera. Overall, the NBC segment was very positive, and it's kind of good that it's seen that the mainstream media is not giving Aptera a free ride, because nobody wants to feel that they are having the wool pulled over their eyes with new technology. There is enough anti-EV sentiment out there, and conspiracy theorists who want to tell you everything that is bad about EV's without considering the good side. So overall, a balanced exposure on NBC is actually a good thing.

    They could just make their wheel converters bigger to handle electrical load heating. Motors getting cooling helps the whole system and ends up drawing less power then without a cooling system, because hot wires draw more power and motors because of the magnetic field does get hotter.

Realistically, you will get an average 5-10 miles of range per day in the California region. And other regions, e.g. Europe, would see this range almost cut in half.

    Then the new iteration of Aptera comes around in 2019 after the owners were able to get their IP back. Better plan, EV only, improved tech, I invested again (still won't break me) because I want to see an EV that goes all out for efficiency.

    Having built a couple of EV's, I think this is not that big a deal - and an easy mistake to make. The car, by reducing power showed that even without cooling, the backup thermal management does work. I did include motor & battery cooling in my EV, but I've only seen it kick in a couple of times in the last year. 90% of the time, it would be fine without any, other than the thermal throttling. I'd bet it was just unfortunate that on this drive, it fell into the 10% that does require cooling.
    I'd treat this demonstration as a positive - it shows that it has secondary thermal management and that it works.

    Elaphe, the manufacturer of the Aptera’s hub motor used to spec their motor’s power output with and without cooling. Their latest website only lists power output with liquid cooling. A possible explanation for the overheating event could have been because Aptera thought it would be OK to drive without cooling because Elaphe’s specs said, or at least implied that it was OK to operate without cooling, you just loose a little power.
    I think you might have narrowed in on a possible problematic area and that is skin cooling. When I first heard of this I thought why haven’t other manufacturers done this with their vehicles which are larger and have more surface area. Cooling a car is really hard. The A/C on a smallish sedan has to have as much capacity as an A/C used for a small house. Add to that heat produced by the motors, inverters and battery and the total heat generated might require as much as 4 tons of cooling (48,000 BTUs). I am concerned that the portion of the Bella pan used as a heat exchanger might not have enough surface area to operate without radiators.

    I’m a reservation holder, not a shareholder. My thoughts are as follows; this is a prototype and things are bound to go belly up at times. Putting myself in their shoes, I believe they decided to debut gamma since it’s closest to production and looks sharp. However they absolutely should have shipped the test rig as well for exactly this possibility. I do believe I understand why they chose not to though. These were all the results of being very cash frugal. They’re trying to be lean to an extreme because they want to see this happen. In their defense, I think gamma could have passed this hurdle just fine without the cooling system. Many brushless motor systems rely on purely passive or forced air cooling tech. The hub motors would’ve been fine if they started closer to 70f. Hell, I believe if they setup a couple of industrial fans in front of it 20 minutes to start it would’ve worked. They just happened to make the exact wrong cost cutting decisions here though. They definitely should have either prepped gamma better, or shipped (beta?) as well to swap to.
