  • I had a chance to attend a special Arcimoto event and check out some of their new models. Arcimoto isn't just electric, it's re-imagining what the vehicle of the future should look like. So what is their mission and vision, and what sorts of progress have they made? Let's get into on this special Sunday episode of Two Bit da Vinci!

    Funny, my wife and I were taking about these yesterday. Weather was ok (UK), but we were on a short 40 mile round trip and this would’ve been a blast. Dream of scooting off to the cold cold surf. We’re invested in Arcimoto, and are putting the pennies aside for when they arrive over here. Great concept. If they survive torrential driving rain, we won’t bother with the doors. It’ll compliment the Model 3.

      The windshield and roof keep most rain off as long as you're moving forward at least 10 MPH. I daily commuted through Portland, Oregon winter in 2019-2020, and I only got wet when stopped at stop lights, or with *VERY* strong sideways blowing wind. Most days, I would get more wet walking 50 feet from parking lot to building than I would driving half an hour to work. (Although mine has the original "half doors" that kept road spray off my legs - they have newer better half doors now, although no full doors yet.)

    I am a new Arcimoto FUV owner waiting for delivery. As a Florida retiree, I am moving from a two wheeled motorcycle to three wheels. I plan lots of exciting things with my FUV like: grocery shopping, the library, or the post office.
    What attracted me to the FUV is that I get the relative protection of a frame but still get the open air feel of a motorcycle. Contrast that to todays cars. They have become enclosed boxes with tinted windows. Drivers and passengers are isolated inside their own little shell. They don't even open the windows anymore.

    • @TecnamTwin
      @TecnamTwin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would I want to roll with windows down? Music sounds better without wind noise and conversations are more easily held with acoustic glass, sound deadening, and even active noise canceling.
      If I want open air, I’d have gotten a convertible.

      @@TecnamTwin Maybe it's a community/social thing or not. The FUV is a community vehicle which fits the around town role. What you describe is separation. If you wish to isolate yourself you do not need a car. Modern cars are designed for speedy distance travel on highways that are not communities. The FUV is an apple. The Tesla is an orange.

    The one gripe I have with the otherwise awesome Arcimotos, is the lack of rapid charging for road trips. A 3-wheeler does have more room than a motorcycle for the power electronics and liquid cooling of the battery, so it would be incredible to have the option...

    From what I heard Sandy Munro say, the new steering feature is called "vectored steering" and is all done in software. What it basically does is allow for the front steered wheels to turn at different rates when in a turn. Sandy was at the Arcimoto PIR event and I believe drove FUVs with and without the vectored steering. He said it was the difference between night and day. Think of the Arcimoto vectored steering like a differential. The good news is that in order to "install" vectored steering on a previously sold FUV it is a simple matter of a software upgrade. The bad news in my opinion is that Arcimoto does not do over-the-air software updates so you would have to take your FUV to an Arcimoto facility. I talked to Arcimoto about this issue and they are very concerned that any sort of over-the-air setup would expose them to "hacking issues"

    • @AnonymousFreakYT
      @AnonymousFreakYT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Arcimoto has the vehicles ready for over the air updates, but not the back-end infrastructure yet. I have one of the earliest FUV's off the line, and mine shipped with "not OTA ready" hardware. A couple months later, they swapped the hardware with OTA-capable. They haven't actually done any OTA updates yet, though.
      While I'm looking forward to vectored steering, I hope they *don't* push it out as an OTA update with no warning - the vectored steering version drove so differently that if someone just hopped in and ignored an on-screen notice, they could get themselves in trouble.

This vehicle would be useless in a rain storm, in cold and inclement weather of the northern portion of the USA. Removable and on the vehicle T-Tops is all so would need to give me enough summer fun, but ready to quickly be reinstalled when the thunderstorms appear on radar.
    Even with Torque Vectoring, power steering is still needed to overcome the friction of the tires turning in the direction being steered at parking lot speeds! This thing has to be heavy, due to the battery, therefore there will be a lot of pressure on the front tires to overcome by the steering gear.

      No, they've been following Tesla's model - released the high-end expensive model first, then as they ramp up production, they'll be able to decrease the price. The original "Evergreen Edition" were over $21,000. They now have them starting at $17,900. They are still targeting $12,000 as the entry-level version once high-volume production starts. (It took Tesla *HOW* long to actually come out with the $35,000 Model 3? That they never even sold in quantity, actively discouraging people from buying it.)

As an automotive engineer I think the biggest challenge facing us today isn't so much the vehicle, it's changing how people think about vehicles. We sell cars as a lifestyle and an extension of their personality. But they aren't, they are a tool for transporting people and goods from A to B. I'm optimistic that projects like this that offer both a recreational and a utilitarian purpose to EV's will be step towards convincing people they really don't need 2 tons and 150 cubic feet of cargo space to get to work.

      It has heated seats and handlebar grips available, which are sufficient even right at freezing. I just wear a thin jacket and gloves when riding mine in the Winter (Pacific Northwest, not as harsh as Northeast,) but anyone who rides a motorcycle in all weather will find the Arcimoto luxurious in comparison. It has a small window defroster that I imagine would be plenty powerful enough to heat the whole cabin once they have full enclosure.
      I drove mine about an hour each way to the "FUV & Friends" event, in the blazing heat and sun. Yeah, being exposed like that was.... Not as fun. I always wear a baseball cap when riding in the sun due to the clear roof, but the ride home was a bit brutal, I got sunburned on my arms and neck thanks to the sun coming in from the side. They are planning on full doors, which if they have UV/IR coatings on the windows should be good. I know one FUV owner who put a coating on his roof, and even made panels out of cardboard to completely block the sun from above.

    Please use and instruct others in proper microphone technique in locations with ambient noise. The hand microphone should be held straight up just under the chin so you speak across it. The closer the microphone is to the speaker’s mouth the better the signal-to-noise ratio. Don’t make the mistake of holding it in front of the mouth that looks bad and is susceptible to breath-popping and plosives. The higher the ambient noise level the narrower the pattern of the microphone should be used. “Shotgun“ microphones come in various lengths. The longer the mike, the narrower the pattern and its ability to reject unwanted sound. For good ID and to prevent unauthorized use of your recordings, make a couple of Two Bit da Vinci hand microphone clip-on logos to attach to “mic flags”. Maybe request a fan proficient in 3D printing to make them from your design. “Bad sound makes good video look bad.”
