This may actually be the first time that I'm not outright *shocked* at a monitor costing 1200 bucks. Seriously, compare every other 1000-1500 dollar (gaming) monitor to this one in terms of specs and performance and it's not even fair.

    • @richardbroder

Same. Although my LG B9 55" TV was only $700 in 2020. And it has everything this does basically. I would've expected this QD-OLED to have 4K. And I would also have loved it being big enough to function as a main monitor, and a squared secondary monitor (16:9+9:9=25:9 / 40-45" / 4K). It will come someday if we're lucky I guess. But then again, I'd still not be willing to pay more than what I can get an LG OLED for when its a generation old.
EDIT: But i'm also cheap, and poor. Point still stands, this costing $1200 makes sense. I've never understood how the IPS panels were selling.

@@profesorz642 Your comment is nonsense if you don't provide any factual argument. Sure an LG TV is better for watching media obviously since it's larger and 16:9, but the display technology isn't better.

For everyone asking, there will not be any other sizes/shapes of QD OLED monitors for quite a while (up to a year or more).
Samsung Display is currently only making 34, 55, 65-inch QD OLED panels because that is what can be cut from the mother glass with minimal waste. Even if they announced they were starting to produce other sizes there would be a significant lead time as they adjust their manufacturing before anything would be available in a product to buy.
So for now, 34-inch ultrawide is the only available option. Sorry for anyone that wants a 4k, 27 inch, flatscreen, etc. And Samsung's version of this monitor uses the exact same QD OLED panel and thus is also 34-inch ultrawide.

    • @mrxcs

I've had this panel for ~2 weeks myself, and outside of extremely low fps / variable fps loading screens, I haven't seen any VRR flicker, much less the raised black look that I saw on the CX I used previously, even at ~50fps in dark scenes.
Clearly you managed to capture some in game, but I am curious if that was more of an issue in the 175hz mode vs 144 (I've been using 144 almost exclusively), and how it directly compares to LG sets for you, since I personally have been having a massively better experience, even at lower framerates vs the CX.

Even lowering the refresh rate all the way down to 60hz to see if it would cause the dithering to become obvious. It did not. I am thoroughly impressed with it and can now understand why Alienware and Nvidia were happy to give it Gsync Ultimate certification and go with only DP 1.4 instead of DP 2.0.

Bevore i got an old tech (non HDR) Asus PG348Q, alsl an 43" UWQHD and this was fine, but most of the time i have missed the vertical view. Because its more build on horizontal usage. Even 21:9 ratio.
But with the LG C2, i dont missing the more horizontal view (because its only fine in shoters, not in most other games). With an 16:9 i have more view in all directions and the size of 42" is big, but not a problem. Move it more far away on your desk and all its fine.
I dont have tested the Alienware, but the LG 42C2 is the perfect allround Monitor with modern and future based features!

Most of the games I play can't even reach around 100fps at 4k but 1440p is a good trade off. Hey Vincent, do you think this monitor will beat the LG C2 42" for PC gaming?
Even if it does I just can't get myself to get this when I also play on console. The PS5 still doesn't support native 1440p res so I still think the better choice for both of my devices will still be the LG C2 42" tv.

    • @goblinphreak2132

C2 42" doesn't offer BFI at 120hz.... its removed as per Vincent's early C2 unboxing video and menu walkthrough. so in essence, you have 120hz vs 175hz.... so for PC gaming the monitor will blow the C2 out of the water in both motion clarity and color accuracy....
for console, obviously buying a gaming monitor that doesn't support hdmi 2.1 would be an idiotic thing. but its also ultra-wide which consoles dont support. so for console gaming, the c2 (or even c1/cx) are your only options (and sony varients)

@@fleyua7176 where do you trash gamers come from. "it will not make you a better gamer" you don't seem to understand the point. everything in a computer system will add latency. in the sense of just counter strike for example. the raw fps you get is the beginning to your reaction time capability. someone playing at 150fps will have a native response time of 6ms, while someone with 300fps has a native response of 3ms. couple that together with other sources of lag like PING or monitor pixel response/refresh rate, and it can add up. as someone who has been pc gaming in fps titles since pc has ever existed, if you want to be the best, you need the best equipment. this idea that "it can't make you better" is bullshit.
even just going off "motion clarity" which is how our brains perceive an moving image. 120hz + bfi will look extremely smooth compared to 120hz without bfi.... so when it comes to the new LG C2, any "gamer" who is playing an FPS game even lightly competitively, could end up hindering gameplay. ESPECIALLY if they already own a C1 or CX and run 120hz + BFI..... when it comes to PC gaming, having 175hz raw will be BETTER than 120hz raw. however 120hz + bfi will look better than 175hz without BFI.... the great thing about black frame insertion is the ability for our minds to process that image. and at 120hz with bfi enabled, the minimum quality increase would be akin to a native 240hz display. which is a huge gain in motion clarity. so as you whip around 180 degrees to shoot someone behind you, without the bfi the image is a huge blur and you miss the an enemy coming up on you from the side. while with bfi enabled, you would have a clearer image, and you could choose to continue turning 180 to kill the guy behind you or prioritize the guy that was only 90 degrees to your left.
even in PC gaming, my friends and I were playing PubG back when it was popular. one friend had a dogshit slow 60hz display while we all had 144hz or better. he literally dies and says "i didn't see him" but we all did see the enemy, who was in the doorway. his monitor was SO SLOW that he literally didn't even see the enemy peek out of the doorway!!! so display quality does matter, and yes it can make you a better gamer. it may be a small gain, but small gains help overall.
not to mention "tracking" an enemy aka tracing them or following them with your cursor/crosshair. its a LOT easier when you have a smooth image in terms of motion clarity. if the image is blurry, its harder for your brain to process the image and follow the enemy properly. just because YOU dont play competitively doesn't mean everyone else isn't. but when YOU are trash at video games, i can see why you make such ignorant statements.

Excellent review as always, Vincent. I'm very curious to hear your thoughts on the dreaded Pentile subpixel layout. As a person who works with text pretty much all day, anything non-RGB is immediately obvious to my eyes, no matter the Cleartype settings and other tricks, and is very annoying. When I heard that these new panels would be true RGB I was very excited, but the Pentile subpixel structure seems to me to be worse with regards to fringing/artifacts than the RGBW one used by LG panels...

    • @mattinm

@@mattinm that's correct, I was under the mistaken impression that Samsung Display in their statement referred to it as Pentile but they in fact did not use this name. They just call it a 'proprietary structure'.
