From what I've seen, Linus has a consistent record of not allowing sponsorships and investments to affect his opinion on a given piece of hardware. He's also been good about owning up to it when he makes a mistake.
He's pragmatic to know that whatever sponsorship money he'd be getting isn't worth the hit to his reputation for integrity. I don't understand how people don't comprehend that. Mathwise, it just makes more sense to have more subs and a loyal fanbase which equals more views, more sponsors and more merch sales. It simply wouldn't make sense for him to be a shill.

Honestly, I was expecting a price of something more like $2,000 USD. The fact it's only just a few hundred dollars more than an equivalent IPS monitor is actually the most impressive part of this product
Still out of reach for most people, for now. If someone really wants an OLED screen, i think LG made a 50" TV for like $700, but it's new tech so it'll be a bit before it falls in price.
@@NecroFlex Yep the LG A1, the cheapest one, is around 780e here in France, around half the price of a C1. It lacks some stuff like high refresh rate, etc, but hey, it's OLED, that's already something !

Props to Alienware and Samsung for charge accordingly to production cost, since their product is truly unique they could charge whatever they want and people would have to pay. it's really at the point now where burn-in is becoming a non-issue. Wulff Den did a test recently with the Switch OLED, and it took 3000h of nonstop use to get even the slightest hint of a ghost image.
The devil's in the detail on this, because what *they* consider "burn-in bad enough to deserve a refund" and what *you* do, may not be the same. They'll also probably replace with another refurb/returned unit too. Lastly, there might be some sort of caveats on usage - the monitor might be logging hours it's powered on and this might need to be below a certain value for them to allow a return. All that to say - looks good as a headline, but there'll be detail there to figure out.

I’m still surprised that Samsung didn’t make a new TV with this panel. This is a real game changer, at least until MicroLED becomes more affordable. I know Sony has a QD-OLED TV, but they only have 2 HDMI 2.1 ports.
All Samsung TV’s without the one connect box have only 1 HDMI 2.1 port. According to the rumors Samsung Electronics (buys the panel and makes the tv) and Samsung Display (makes the panel and sells it) couldn’t agree on prices for this given panel
I have this monitor and it is shockingly good. Like Linus said..."strobe like clarity". Maxes out at 175hz but feels like it's running at 500hz+ on an IPS. I have the latest 1440p 240hz ELMB Fast IPS gaming monitors and this thing destroys them. I can't believe the price it sells for. It's an absolute steal. Easily should be priced at 2-3x higher for what you get compared to the best gaming IPS panels. Inky jet blacks, infinite contrast ratio, zero black light bleed, zero IPS glow, zero matte screen Vaseline smear effect. The leap from the best IPS to this monitor feels truly evolutionary.
The only other thing I would have loved for Linus to talk about is the text quality. I want this for gaming and work and I am fine with my 27” 1440p monitor, but people who have them seem split on how windows and Mac render text with the non-traditional sub-pixel layout
I think it's kinda confirmed that subpixel layout isn't really rgb but more like pentile from samsung phones and cleartype isn't made for this layout yet so sadly text looks worse than lg oled which wasn't even that good at it
After using it for over a week, and I program and work at home, the text clarity is fine. When you get down to 8pt and lower font things start to look bad, but for programming where I'm at 14pt font things like more or less the same as my IPS and TN panels. Exponents, citations, things like that suffer, but nothing too awful.
Same here. I want one of these in 27” 1440p. That’s the optimum size for work, and for gaming it’s optimum for ‘just below’ SOTA graphics card capability.
12:25 $1299? That's not even that bad, I was honestly expecting north of $2000, given Alienware/Dell's pricing on their monitors and all the bells and whistles you get. Remember how much G-Sync monitors used to cost?
Stop expecting to pay more goddammit. This is how manufactures sell us overpriced products. Technology is supposed to be affordable because they continuously invest in efficient manufacturing techniques on large scale, to maximize profit and pump out as many units as possible. As more time goes by, oled should become more and more affordable. And there is no wonder oled is cheaper than minileds, simply because oleds are easier to manufacture and involve less complexity than minileds. If you ask me, oled is hugely overpriced than it should really be. Samsung has huge fabs and could make this panel a lot cheaper. But price is dictated by novelty and lack of competitive pricing.
After reading comments about the pixel refresher, I don't think we'll see a 16:10 QD-OLED for a while yet. 16:10 is a professional & office ratio that'll likely often display static content. These displays sound like they need to run the pixel refresher after a mere 4hrs of consecutive power on time. For Professional/Office, it needs to be able to do 10hrs.
The 3 year burn in coverage sold me. Dell is known for half assed coverage in the first place, but on a product this good, competitively priced, with that level of assurance, I can't wait to be in the market for a display like this when they come down in price and I'm more financially well off. Super exciting!

I've read that QD-OLED uses a triangle configuration for its subpixel so red and blue at the bottom and green on top so that you have first row red, blue, red, blue and the next row all green and next again red, blue, red. So at high contrast edges like window edges on your desktop or in-game HUD you have artifacts that look similar to chromatic aberration. Not many sites are talking about that but on the other hand not many sites that tested the monitor do extensive testing that goes beyond just looking at it or doing a calibration test.
You can see it at 12:05 in the video with the white lettering that sits on top of the Windows toolbar. The words "Rain Coming", take a look at the top edge of those white letters, and you will notice a green hue. Now look at the bottom edges of those very same letters, and you notice a purplish hue. So when the white area ends, the green subpixel is running along the upper edge, and its bright enough to notice. When the white area ends at the bottom, the red and blue subpixels, together, look like purpose and it forms a purple edge. So any bright, almost near-white, area that is besides a dark colors, near-black area, you're going to see this. This may actually be more noticeable when using the monitor for web browsing and office computing programs.
@@dumdum93 If this display tech takes off they will. They had to do the same thing when transitioning to LCDs, because it was tuned for CRTs. Those had different dot patterns too, and depending what monitor was detected, that would tell ClearType how to render text.
@@seyeryej Very good catch, they could in future models overcome some of these color accuracy issues that arise in certain contrast cases such as the ones you mentioned.

I could have waited for the DWF but honestly at this price it was too difficult to say no. I currently have an LG gl850-B wich is 1440p 144hz and it's a great monitor, I don't see 4k as a worthwhile improvement due to how much more power it takes to run so i could justify 3440x1440 and have a 3080 ti to run it. I don't game heavily and may have issues with desk space but if i really love this when i get it and the contrast and response time improvements are that much better than i will just buy a vesa mount. I got this monitor almost a week ago, upgrading from an AW3418DW. It's is quite nice. But there are a few nit picks. The pixel refresher is quite aggressive and runs whenever the monitor goes to sleep if it's been on for at least 4 hours consecutively. This screen is really impressive, but it has a major flaw IMO that you didn't mention. The sub pixel layout is kinda weird, in an unusual triangular shape, which causes "chromatic aberration" around high contrast elements (text, straight lines... It's particularly visible on white text over a black background). It's not really a problem while gaming, but for video editing, photography, design... I think it's important to mention. Because that's really the only thing that prevents me from buying it.
That's a complete deal breaker for me. I absolutely hate any form of chromatic aberration. I immediately turn it off in every game. It's like motion blur but worse since it effects everything on the screen including still objects. My eyes barf at the sight of it.

I know I can trust Linus’s take in a video whether it’s sponsored or not, because I’m sure that if he screws up there will be some kind of level-headed response to the pushback he gets. That reputation, along with the great content coming out of the massive, supportive business he’s created, always makes me come back for one video or another.
I've been waiting for a curved OLED monitor to replace my Acer Pred 34. This thing literally checks all the boxes, but i didn't think I'd ever own an Alienware piece of hardware.
Dell monitors are great and have awesome replacement warranties. Ex, few dead pixels on my 360hz from them. They Sent another (received the next day) before having me send the old one back. GL getting Samsung to do that.
I have Alienware 1440p 240hz monitor and before that had one a 1080p 240hz and I’ve never had a single problem with either of them. They’re absolutely beautiful and I have yet to see a better monitor with my own eyes. This old one is a beast of a monitor I wish I could afford to buy it!
dell monitors have a good reputation, and it's not like it'll be much different functionally from a samsung monitor, as the panel will be the same. I have a predator x35 and this QD OLED stuff is mighty tempting, especially with the fast pixel response
Still a good buy a year later after launch. Though Alienware did release the DWF with the ability to upgrade firmware. However there are more OLED monitors out now so you do have a broader choice. Strike a good deal on this one and you won't regret it.
okay so I love the displays like it's super cool and looks great, like I wasn't a fan of the edititing style (especially going into forza that transition) aside from that, great video keep going!
4k is shit tho and decreases performance and drops your fps, and it looks the same as non 4k 3440x1440. And oled in general looks better than 4k and then there's paring oled with raytracing. Dont bother with overrated 4k m8.
Can you enlighten us why other tech reviewers found the pixel structure, color fringing etc unbearable to a level they can’t even recommend it at all as the picture quality is horrible? Sponsored or not but it seems you either had a complete different monitor or simply didn’t care/didn’t see the problem which would be strange … though I admit crazy color edges wouldn’t be immediately visible in the games Linus tried…
Heise says the problem is caused by the basic design principles of the QD-OLED tech, so it can not be attributed to a single faulty unit and should be detectable on any model.
So happy OLED is making its way to the gaming monitor market! Hope to see more in the future and I am very happy that Alienware set the bar for what to expect pricing wise. Had a company like LG or ASUS made this, it would have been around 1k more and they would have sold there smaller models for around the price of this alienware. 100% itching to buy this…but my gtx1080 cannot handle it lol.
@@MoonPump it was $999, maybe inflation raised the price or they've raised the cost so that when holiday season comes around they can have a $100 "off" for the holidays lol. I got a 3070 now but i dont think it can handle ultrawide 1440p too too well still.
@@abrahamsanchez5509 I also have a 3070 and just ordered a Samsung neo g8. Its def over kill for our graphics cards but at least we have a monitor that can compliment our new 4xxx cards in the future ;]
I feel guilty - I ordered this using dell student advantage today for £900. The buyers remorse is unreal. The excitement is unreal. All I know for sure is I love tech and I don’t care!! Thanks for the great review Linus, hopefully it lives up to expectation. Only disappointed is the lack of HDMI 2.1 input for console gaming :(
Same, equality dissapointed that a leading in industry monitor doesn't support display port 2.0 when it clearly needs it. Hopefully dell will release a updated model of this later on
Finally got mine, just wanted to mention how I really was worried I was getting overhyped cause of reviews like these. Still haven't played RE Village, but saw some gold on my characters armor in AC Odyssey. Linus was not being hyperbolic about the gold looking like gold and not just yellow. The colors, and smoothness of this displays motion really has to be seen to be believed. I'm reinstalling lots of my gaming library of the last 7 years to test this monitor. Everything has been impressive, even Witcher 3 which I didnt think could look any better or smoother. I'm not very wealthy, I do ok for myself, so spending this much on a monitor isn't bank breaking, but it is still a considerable amount of money. And I am a very remorseful buyer, no matter what it is, tv, car, clothes. I can honestly say this is the most confident I've felt in a purchase in a long, long time. Upgrading from my Samsung G7 which kinda left me wary of Samsung products, I have scanlines over 120hz or when using VRR. But Dell has done their due diligence on their QA, so far, flawless. Thank you for the review, you and others have all basically said the same thing, and have restored my faith in online reviewers after the G7 issues I had.
I just ordered mine, and like you, I am a remorseful buyer. I've been just as excited for it to show up, as frustrated at myself for spending so much on a monitor. I'm happy to read that you don't find these videos to be overly exagerated. I was worried that I got too carried away and spent a lot of money on something that isn't that good. Like you, I do fine, but this is still a lot of money. In fact, I think this is the most expensive single item that I have bought that isn't a justifiable expense, like a car.
I have an odyssey g7 which I really really like and ive been through 3-4 good monitors now. I am eyeballing this badboy right now and I got an acceptable deal on it on it. Should I got for it?
@@TehF0cus Coming from the same monitor, yes. Huge upgrade for me. Though I also had scanline issues over 120hz on the G7, so i was admittedly more inclined to like the AW for just, working.
Would definitely trust Linus’s opinion on a monitor more if he was in a dark environment. Calibration is great but calibration assumes 10 nits of ambient brightness, not 4 windows with sun pouring in
@@jaliho5288 That wouldn't be much of a stress test though. I agree most gamers will play in the dark if they can, but people in different conditions still want a good experience. I think that's important.
Bought it for ~$700 on dell outlet with only 90 days warranty, but considering the price and the quality of the display, I can take the risk. For $1200 I would still probably buy it if I have no other choice. I did some reading about this monitor and seems like burn-in is not that big of a issue like with the early oled's. When I mounted this monitor next to my other (decent) IPS panels, you don't want to go back. However, I have to say that for productivity/work with text, this is not the best choice. Fonts are not sharp and high brightness may cause your eyes to hurt. Lowering the brightness is affecting the contrast. I found that switching to eco mode helps a bit.
Hey all, I know the video is a bit old but wanted to leave my experiences with this monitor and Dell's QC because my review was vetted from going on Dell's website! Basically I've had three monitors in as many months with all three being faulty. The first had black splotches in the anti-glare coating, the second had constant black flickering (a few times a minute it would flash to black), and the third had two columns of intermittently dead pixels. I would suggest going to a retail store where you can view the monitor before taking it home to ensure that you don't waste as much time as I have with these monitors. The first contact I had with Dell I was told I would get a reply within 1 business day and heard crickets for five whole weeks. This was until I called again threatening to take the company to consumer affairs of course... TLDR: The monitor is great but there is a good chance you'll receive a unit with issues. Support is poor until threatened with escalation.
Im gonna be honest, I thought this was like a $4000+ monitor, so looking it up and seeing it at "only" $1300, I was shocked. Still too expensive for me but nowhere near what I thought it was
I don't understand what are you talking about in many of your videos but I've watched them anyway because of your great camera performance and personality.
Great video! What about text clarity? I've seen some reviews saying that because the pixel arrangement there can be issues displaying text. This monitor is a beast at gaming, but what about productivity? Is this a real issue?
I just got mine yesterday and unfortunately text clarity is not great. If you plan on heavy productivity use beyond gaming, especially writing or programming, I would not recommend it. ClearType just isn't designed for this subpixel layout, and high contrast areas in general look oddly colorful and sometimes blurry. Not too noticable in a game but definitely noticeable otherwise. Hopefully better drivers and software will fix this soon but I guess it remains to be seen whether the problem is primarily hardware or software.
@@UncleJemima the problem is equally both - software on windows side and unusual (as in - only one with this layout) pixel layout on the hardware level. There's also the pwm issue - which isn't normally bad on an oled, but this one is matched exactly to the framerate for some reason.
Its great, I just got it. I would disagree though the 5% 1000 nits window is sufficient. I mean its a flaw I can live with for sure as the general contrast an PQ is amazing -- but I miss super bright scenes a little bit over my old x35. Sure looking at a white screen of 1000nits is hard to look at, but that doesnt happen often. On the x35, the sky in games is a soild 800nits which I think looks awesome. Its all trade offs though and this AW monitor still wins. I feel the pricing on this product is excellent also.
Still happy with my C1 49" OLED with 5000hrs, no burn-in signs as a dedicated desktop monitor, which has the WBE panel, unlocked to a G1 peak brightness.
If they could make a 32" 4k 120-144hz version using this same display tech, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Ultrawide doesn't work very well for my particular workloads.
I am using this monitor. It's so impressive and color is even better than my dell 2723qe(4k and hdr). Its price is quite reasonable for an anlinware product. They could have charged it higher
@@DankGank These have a RGB layout though and not Pentile, just like any other TV/Monitor panel. Nobody uses Pentile except in mobile screens, even LG Oled has W-RGB and no Pentile nonsense.
@@_--_--_ It's what you might call "technically RGB layout in the loosest sense." It looks like an evolution of RGBG PenTile meant to address the classic issues with PenTile. It looks like it does a good job of reducing those issues.
@@KarimTemple I think you dont know what you are talking about. Pentile is a physical layout of the subpixels. Monitor/TV Panels are NEVER Pentile, it doesnt make any sense there. Older non White pixel Oleds for TVs/Monitors are normal RGB layout just like the TFT variants, W-OLED are usually either WRGB or RGBW. QD-Oled panels are just like the first gen of Oleds normal RGB layout IDENTICAL to normal TFT panels.
hahaha! You will definitely be blown away even by an high-end VGA CRT (PC crt) and of course LG C1 and similar. If you have a phone with an OLED screen it is similar but instead of full brightness to see an impact you only need the default 60% to feel the same
Not sure if Linus and team will see this or not, but it would be great to see how this compares to Samsung's own 34in G85SB that was just released on their site (US anyways). Would love to see how they compare since they are likely the same panel just differences in the final product...
I'll say this: I have still an AW 13R1 with an OLED panel, played literally hundreds of hours of Overwatch and KSP on it, and no burn in. I also used it for work at the same time, and as a system for presentations, email, etc. No burn-in, never gave it a thought. That on a system with an OLED panel made in 2016.... I have an AW3418DW as my current monitor, I will be getting this as soon as I can confidently.
I love how you've come so far at the point that you can just put 'This isn't sponsored' in the title without any context and people still watch it. lol
You guys have to start filming these screen review vids in HDR. I'm watching Linus compare different parts of the HDR screen on my HDR screen and thinking "that looks really flat". Then I remember.
Indeed. It looks crap even on an SDR display. Since TH-cam allows for HDR content to be uploaded, it's beyond me why would pretty much *anyone* not tap into it if they at all can. And Linus shouldn't have a problem obtaining that fancy 12K Ursa camera just for that. He probably pays more than $5k for gas in a month anyway.
As a Logo and Brand-Identity designer, I can see myself getting it in the future. Perfect for my color accurate work and gaming needs. And also perfect out of the box so no need for calibration initially.. I think Allienware has a winner here.
Hey LMG when was the last time a "budget monitor" video? Maybe find the best monitors between the price range of 100$-300$? I'd be curious what the consensus is on that.
From what I've seen, Linus has a consistent record of not allowing sponsorships and investments to affect his opinion on a given piece of hardware. He's also been good about owning up to it when he makes a mistake.
I agree, he's my personal baseline for a trustworthy youtuber.
this is the first time in a real while I see someone spell/type "affect" instead of "effect" in the TH-cam comment section. Fr, thank you and kudos

The fact this was done in a very bright room..pretty impressive

Honestly, I was expecting a price of something more like $2,000 USD. The fact it's only just a few hundred dollars more than an equivalent IPS monitor is actually the most impressive part of this product

Still out of reach for most people, for now. If someone really wants an OLED screen, i think LG made a 50" TV for like $700, but it's new tech so it'll be a bit before it falls in price.

Props to Alienware and Samsung for charge accordingly to production cost, since their product is truly unique they could charge whatever they want and people would have to pay. If it was Apple's or Razer they would charge 5k claiming their all new super ultra max retina tech is better than everyone's.
At $300 cheaper, this thing is already better value and quality than Apple's studio monitor that they reviewed on Short Circuit.

I was always worried about OLED for gaming but after seeing a 3 year warranty that even covers burn in, makes me a bit less worried about it now.
it's really at the point now where burn-in is becoming a non-issue.

I agree, this monitor is a game changer for fps users and cheats for hit scan users I wish there was a comparison video with the xl2546k
HDTVTest has one and will be posting a VERY detailed review soon.
Nah this is a job for hdtvtester or however he is called. This monitor is targeted at gamers so text isn't a selling point
Would love to see a 16:9 or 16:10, 27" to 32" QD-OLED monitor
16:9 4K 120hz or more would be AMAZING
Same here. I don’t want/ need an ultrawide… hopefully, we will see more of these QD OLEDs soon!
After reading comments about the pixel refresher, I don't think we'll see a 16:10 QD-OLED for a while yet. 16:10 is a professional & office ratio that'll likely often display static content.
That's something they could take care of at the operating system level. ClearType assumes that the subpixels are rectanglular and in a row of RGB.
@@timramich Assuming Microsoft would bother pushing an update to support such a niche product like this...
@@dumdum93 If this display tech takes off they will. They had to do the same thing when transitioning to LCDs, because it was tuned for CRTs. Those had different dot patterns too, and depending what monitor was detected, that would tell ClearType how to render text.

I will have it tomorrow and i honestly can't wait, I wasn't sure about the curve or the glossier display but i've wanted this monitor since you released this video and i done more research into it. Afterwards the monitor turns off and you have to manually turn it back on. Also the application of the coating/top layer on the screen isn't perfect. Seems there are a few spots where there are a little air bubbles or something there. It's quite hard to see unless under the right circumstances but is something I noticed on mine.

4k is shit tho and decreases performance and drops your fps, and it looks the same as non 4k 3440x1440. And oled in general looks better than 4k and then there's paring oled with raytracing.
Dont bother with overrated 4k m8.
@@celphalonred1999 Someone’s never played on 4k before.
Please, just make 32" 4K version of this 🙏 Great video Linus, love this content
Preach! 16:9 (I'd also accept 16: 10) is the real deal. Gimmie one somewhere in the 32-38" size & I'll throw my money!
Please and a non curved one at that.
Samsung neo g8 . You're welcome
@@wowitsruss but that's VA & it's bent. We want 32" 4k QD-LED flat!
@@HOkayson I want 27 flat lol. But I don't think we will get many if any. The alienware is using samsung screens which samsung is eating some cost.
@@boxoffrogs-studio To be honest, there aren't "real" reviews yet. This is more of a first look, too.
100% itching to buy this…but my gtx1080 cannot handle it lol.
how much was this a year ago? its over $1100 right now haha
@@buddiechristlovesyou3667 Undersandable haha.
Ordered my DWF yesterday. Lets hope it was a good choice.
Me watching on my TN panel: "Oh wow that hdr is poppin what the heck"
Would definitely trust Linus’s opinion on a monitor more if he was in a dark environment. Calibration is great but calibration assumes 10 nits of ambient brightness, not 4 windows with sun pouring in
Gotta be realistic about the usage environment though. I think it's a fair test of viewing angles/brightness tbh.
@@wes.9353 a dark room would be the most realistic, seeing as gamers always sit in their dark caves
@@jaliho5288 That wouldn't be much of a stress test though. I agree most gamers will play in the dark if they can, but people in different conditions still want a good experience. I think that's important.
@@wes.9353 once you have a good monitor it's amazing how you don't have to be in the dark anymore, less eyestrain too.
Yeah honestly I'd rather have it in daylight because if it looks good during the day it will look good during dark with these high quality
Ya i saw alot of similar reviews of absolutely abysmal QA, know any retailers that have it?
Hey thanks for sharing, seems like a genuine story, so hopefully it helps someone
if we can see the difference, even after youtube compression and our own displays' quirks, you can imagine how much better it looks in person
Im gonna be honest, I thought this was like a $4000+ monitor, so looking it up and seeing it at "only" $1300, I was shocked. Still too expensive for me but nowhere near what I thought it was
Buy yourself an Apple Stand instead and save $300
@@crestraizn 😂🤣
This was a great review, Would be cool to see a review of this monitor from a daily use perspective for things like reading for extended periods.
I can't imagine a more boring and pointless review "hey guys I enjoyed reading on this monitor, take my money!!!
Still happy with my C1 49" OLED with 5000hrs, no burn-in signs as a dedicated desktop monitor, which has the WBE panel, unlocked to a G1 peak brightness.
Linus: "This isn't sponsored."
Also Linus: "This video is sponsored by Bit Defender" 😁
not sponsored by the manufacturer, but you knew that ...
@@jyvben1520 Or so they say. Once you do a shill video, you have to keep up the shill.
If they could make a 32" 4k 120-144hz version using this same display tech, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Ultrawide doesn't work very well for my particular workloads.
Alienware AW2721D is much better in every way. Gaming sized screen, 240hz, 1440p HDR, also on sale for 699 directly from Dells website

@@TJCook-jo8pg if a display isn't at least 240hz it doesn't matter what it is, it's worthless at least for gaming
I am using this monitor. It's so impressive and color is even better than my dell 2723qe(4k and hdr). Its price is quite reasonable for an anlinware product. They could have charged it higher
I'm really excited to see this tech make it's way into the VR world.
Unfortunately still suffers from the issues that made VR manufacturers drop OLED in the first place: the pentile display structure
@@_--_--_ but it's not identical lol. So. Try Google or something.
I just bought a G7 on sale and compared to what I was using its mind blowing, I can't even imagine how awesome this tech is.
Props to the Editor. He had me cracking up at times.
