  • Jinhao 51A fountain pens: I love these really cheap Chinese fountain pens - they get a big thumbs up from me!
    The versions that I have of the Jinhao 51A all have extra fine hooded nibs or extra fine bent nibs (the pens from "Bobby Pen") - Jinhao later released versions of the Jinhao 51A with standard nibs, but I haven't felt the need to buy these as I already have quite a collection of these pens!

    Probably the cheapest pen I know that is worth buying. I have three of them. Never had any problems. They are consistent writers with no hard starts or skipping, in my experience. Never tried eye-dropping the pen. I just use the supplied converter.

    One of the pens I've ordered this month, and should be getting soon. Glad to see your take on this, and I have high hopes for the one I'm getting (I went with the wine red, opaque plastic, and the seller only had the 0.38mm hooded nib. I wanted to see how an "extra fine" nib went with my handwriting, so...)

    Alas they are not one pound anymore. By the way, for the sticker stains that you cannot get off, you can use WD 40 and use some tissue to rub it off. It does not leave scratch marks. Don’t use Alcohol or nail polish remover because they can “melt plastics”. I destroyed my vertical mouse when I should really be using WD 40. Hope this helps.

    If you use a product called "Goo Gone", a little bit on a paper towel the sticky label will come off nice and clean. Don't know if it available in the UK, but readily available here in Canada

      @@FountainPenJourney regular olive oil will work great for removing the label. Just apply it with a cotton swab and rub it in with the swab and after a minute scratch it with your fingernail, rub it for another 30 seconds with the oil soaked swab and wipe it off with a tissue and it should be clean as a whistle.
      Also with the wood pens, if you can get some boiled linseed oil; put it on a tissue and rub it liberally on the wood. It'll protect the wood, absorb into it, and bring out the grain beautifully. With the extra oil take any wooden handled tools, lightly sand it to get off any lacquer then apply the boiled linseed oil and it'll make the tool handle feel softer in your hands, and reduse blisters in your hand. The beautiful thing about it is that it'll strengthen the wood.

    Thuya is pronounced 'Twee-ya', it is a softwood with very high resin content and is often taken from the root burls without harm to the tree and it looks and smells wonderful.

    jinhao is doing a great job of providing decent rather say good quality fountain pen to fountain pen lovers. yes they make knock offs but we cant afford a mont blanc. but why the general public be void of the pleasure of writing with a 149 designed pen. so bring it on. i am an indian. we have a small movement going on to boycott chinese product. but they r providing such nice products that its hard to boycott them.

      I’m currently at work and I have a Jinhao 51A with me right now. These are excellent fountain pens.
      As much as I dislike Chinese products, in this world it’s very difficult to avoid buying them, and when a manufacturer such as Jinhao produces such great, reliable products, boycotting them just doesn’t work.

    • @TheAmitkumar2010
      @TheAmitkumar2010 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FountainPenJourney boycotting is not the solution. our own countries should be potent enough to create better products at such competitative prices so that customer willingly changes his or her brand loyalty. forcing something just shows our own country's inability.

      update: i got tigerwood, rosewood, ebony & cherry. i friction fit tigerwood to drill using drillbit & tape (protip: ensure the friction fit is really tight, mine came off halfway through polishing & nearly pickup carpet lint if it fall to the floor). using lint free serviette paper i spread 2 drop of CA glue while drill is running. do it 3 layer 15 minutes apart. some brownish wood finish came off to the paper on first coat. not a problem. 15 hrs later i put 1 drop of ink to the wood, let it sit for 30 seconds before wiping it off. absolutely no ink stain on the body of the pen. i'm very happy with the result.

    Hi thanks for a very informative review. I am from India and wanted to know if one can get the extra fine EF 0.3mm nibs for Jinhao 51A? Do they sell only the nibs like in a set of 10?

    • @FountainPenJourney
      @FountainPenJourney  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi,
      I'm not sure what's available in your country. These 51A pens all originally launched with EF nibs, but there are non hooded versions now available, though I don't know what width those nibs are.

  • @Fernandohe111
    @Fernandohe111 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do you think it would flow well with a dry ink, such as Pelikan 4001? Pelikan pens with extra fine nib are too expensive for me now, but I really like pelikan 4001, I use it with my Jinhao x750 but after some days of it working really well, I began have starting insues in the middle of a paragraph... And now that I am learning spencerian, I really want a fine nib. (It could as well just be the paper, which are cheap stuff)

    • @FountainPenJourney
      @FountainPenJourney  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It should be fine. These pens are much better than the x750s which do have flow problems.

      Thank you, now I very much want to buy both Jinhao 51a, and Jinhao 100, as Jinhao 100 has a fine nib option in aliexpress now, and Jinhao 51a for when I wish to have ef. I wish I knew those things before, but its not like its expensive anyway.
