This is a review of the Jinhao 51A
Here on the channel there is a new pen review every week. All the pens shown are from my personal collection, some used more than others. There is also an ink review every week, and the featured ink of the week is also the inks used in the pen review for the week. The writing samples are transcripts done from “Of Men and Numbers” by Jane Muir published by Dell Publishing Co, Ink and was first printed in April 1962. Last there is also a paper review done each week… at least until I run out of different papers.

It is important with this and all reviews to remember I am not an expert. I am just a nerd with a camera and an opinion. I expect my opinion to mostly be wrong as it is just my solitary opinion, make your own judgement and don’t follow group think. There always seems to be some variation of an ink, pen or paper. These are things out of my control and I can only give my opinion on what I have infront of me. If your opinions are different I encourage you to share them in the comments but please rememberI am an amateur just having fun…. Also, me and everyone else you interact with on line is a human on the other end of the computer, they might be having a bad day and your kind words might be the best thing that happens to them today.
All pictures for this video were taken by me, including the background picture which I made or transformed in photoshop and the video is edited on Adobe Premier Pro. Also, every element, except the music, for this video was made by me. The music is from the free TH-cam audio library. I am in shock if you have actually read this much of the description, if you have comment and let me know you found this.

I am not a fan of hooded nibs but i love my Parker 51 and that's why I just got this pen and i wasn't disappointed. For the price there is nothing you can complain about.

I don't mind writing with hooded nibs at all, but I think they do miss out on the ascetic of seeing the nib.

We call these 'magic be beans'.
In bulk they where just over $2.00 each.
Yup you bet, inked up in all kinds of inks with no worries.
Many have gone off as gifts.
Where where these 60 years ago?
    Thanks Chris

Their value is super high, and great to have a bunch inked up for others to use.

BTW, there is a variation of 51a, with longer barrel only in wood.

I have seen that, doubt I will get one though. Regardless, the wood ones look really nice.

I have Jinhao 51A rosewood fountain pen it's amazing to write with

    I love Jinhao's hooded nib.
It's smaller but have better ink flow than the non hooded F nib counterpart in the same model.
The only downside is it's hard to find the right writing angle

    • @AnInkGuy

It can be difficult to find the correct writing angle some times, and that can be a big issue

I have several of these pens inked with various Noodler's bulletproof inks. The nib is fine enough that they work well for any correspondence, and at this price point staining wouldn't matter. I use them unposted since my hands are smaller, so posting feels a little back-weighted. I've been surprised at how much I enjoy writing with them. I've taken to using them for my main notetaking for the one class I take. Thank you for this thoughtful review.

I think this is a missing link to help people come over to fountain pens from the ballpoint.

I got a couple of this pens to swap nibs with my 992's since at the time they were actually cheaper than buying spare jinhao stub nibs, and they do work very well. I do think that the jinhao 86 I have does feel a bit heftier and 'higher quality' on the hand.

It is beyond me how to get a nib out of these, with out destroying the unit.
Thanks I'll take a closer look. Chris

The quality of the cap alone on the 86 blows my mind.

@@christophergallagher531 only the extra fine comes with a hooded nib, other nib sizes use the same standard nib and feed of the 992

      I see.
I did find the 51s swap with Monteverde Monzas, easily.

Jinhao for me is a good brand to try something very new from. I think their quality is far higher than their price.

The 51a and the 911 are two of the best value-for-money pens Jinhao makes.

  • @ginopagnani7286

The 51a is far superior to the current version of the Parker 51 and at a fraction of the price.

I thought it may be worth it to find out if I like the Parker 51 prior to buying one... and I am considering a Parker 51 at the next pen show.
